What does cognitive psychology have to do with non-striker run outs?

The recent Harshal Patel example tells us why players need to train for these dismissals

Aditya Prakash12-Apr-2023It is not often that you see a run out at the non-striker’s end. It is even less often that you see a failed run out at the non-striker’s end. Perhaps it is yet more uncommon to be in a situation where five runs are needed off the last over and it is a challenging ask for the batting team in a match where only one other over has gone for fewer runs. We got two out of three of these unlikely possibilities in the last over of the game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants on Monday. At the core of it lies a trite sentiment expressed by understandably shocked spectators: how on earth could Harshal Patel have missed that run out? That surprise might obscure a more complex, embedded, question: given that Harshal had uncannily perfect execution in that over, how could the run out be the thing he messed up?Let us start by regarding this situation from a more empathetic perspective, borrowing from the study of task-switch costs in psychology.Related

Sidharth Monga: The spirit of cricket is not a substitute for the laws

In day-to-day life we often perform more than one activity at a time, such as watching a cricket match and tweeting about it. One can easily see how there is an impairment in the performance of either task that results from attempting to multitask. You may miss a magnificent six because you were too caught up in looking at your phone. It may take you several more minutes than usual to compose a tweet because you were distracted by a series of pressure-building dot balls in the match. In cognitive psychology, these different modes of activities are called task sets – representations of associations between information in the world and relevant responses to this information. As one swaps from one task set to another, there are initial impairments to performance – task-switch costs – while the existing task set is inhibited and the new task set is activated.Look back at the final over of the India vs Pakistan T20I World Cup game in 2022. One can think of Mohammed Nawaz’s unprecedented switch to medium pace from his previous three overs of left-arm fingerspin and his subsequent execution failures as a task-switch cost.Pressure can add to these switch-cost effects. In a losing situation – despite a rich history of a tactic or plan working successfully – a player or team might shortsightedly underestimate the effectiveness of existing plans and adopt alternative tactics that might seem relatively appealing under pressure. Moreover, research shows that time pressure itself (caused by a nervous bowler hurrying their rhythm, for instance) amplifies the effect of a switch cost. So pressure impairs performance by making alternative plans more attractive, forcing switch costs and amplifying these costs by causing bowlers to rush.A more fine-grained example of a task switch is the use of bowling variations, which often demand drastic changes in motor coordination. With disciplined practice, good bowlers can disguise variations and switch between deliveries with few flaws in their execution. Bowlers can train themselves to minimise or eliminate the effect of these switch costs between variations by bowling different types of deliveries a lot in net sessions. But in high-pressure situations, switching between different balls, which was so effortless in the nets, can suddenly prove challenging to execute. This is seen in the death overs of just about any T20 game when an intended yorker or flighted, wicket-seeking delivery becomes a full-toss.

Research shows that time pressure itself (caused by a nervous bowler hurrying their rhythm, for instance) amplifies the effect of a switch cost. Pressure impairs performance by making alternative plans look more attractive, forcing switch costs and amplifying these costs by causing bowlers to rush

Harshal has built his name on his death bowling, as was borne out by the fact that the match was not already won in the four balls preceding the failed run-out attempt. Like Dwayne Bravo, his success in this phase of the game rests on his signature dipping, slower yorker. Both these bowlers’ resounding success in the IPL (three purple caps between them) can be attributed not just to the difficulty batters have in hitting their signature deliveries but to how even the failed execution of this delivery – the dipping full toss – is difficult to hit. These players are not necessarily beasts under pressure; their success rests on even their “mistakes” having utility. In other words, just because Harshal can be effective at the death, that does not necessarily say he is invulnerable under pressure and to pressure-mediated switch costs. So, after concentrating his attention on the tasks of clinically bowling yorkers and short balls, Harshal readies himself for the final delivery of the game. Ravi Bishnoi had not been a non-striker to that point in the game, and there was no strong reason for Harshal to proactively keep an eye open for the possibility of Bishnoi leaving his crease early. Of course, Harshal will have had a non-specific awareness that this could occur, given how crucial it was that Lucknow Super Giants took the single. At this point perhaps Harshal simply plots another yorker in light of the relatively tighter field and the conditioning imposed by the previous delivery, which was short. As he gets into position for his run-up, he may well have got into “dipping yorker mode”, a rehearsed, finely tuned choreography – saunter, sprint, leap, release – that he has performed countless times in the nets and in match situations like this one with success. At some point during this sequence of actions, he catches a glimpse of intent from Bishnoi to run early, or perhaps he doesn’t see Bishnoi but quickly decides that there is no risk at this point in attempting a run out. Either way, given that he has already begun his bowling action, there is difficulty inhibiting dipping-yorker mode and therefore difficulty in efficiently adopting “non-striker-run-out mode”. As a result, an execution error occurs and the ball is declared dead. What if the run-out attempt was premeditated? The underlying switch-cost logic still holds. In this case, Harshal is aware that Bishnoi may leave his crease early in light of the game situation. In order to sufficiently fool Bishnoi into believing the ball will be bowled, Harshal launches into a general “bowling mode”, replicating most of the choreography mentioned above. In trying to realistically bait the non-striker, he devotes his attention to bowling mode. This makes the eventual inhibition of this mode difficult and subsequently leads to a failure in executing the secondary non-striker-run-out mode. The magnitude of this cost is perhaps amplified further by the implicit time pressure caused by rushing when nervous. In a sense, the razor-sharp focus on execution that preceded the run-out attempt amplified its error rate. The run-out action is not similar to anything else a bowler does routinely on the field, which is why it needs practice to effect smoothly•Patrick Hamilton/AFP/Getty ImagesWhat distinguishes the run-out attempt is that it is likely not something Harshal has practised to the extent he has practised actually bowling. More specifically, it is unlikely that coaches ever have had players practise disengaging from their run-up for a purpose beyond just stopping. As a result, most players likely do not have the required training required to switch without cost between the task of bowling and the task of running out the non-striker.Effecting a run out at the non-striker’s end is mechanistically among the most anomalous actions in a bowler’s repertoire. It is the least similar to any other action he routinely performs. This further amplifies the difficulty in switching from bowling mode to non-striker-run-out mode, relative to, say, switching from yorker mode to bouncer mode. Most (but not all) recent prominent examples of run outs at the non-striker’s end were effected by spinners, who have relatively modular and slower run-ups compared to fast bowlers. This provides them more time and opportunity to disengage from bowling mode and engage non-striker-run-out mode. In the heat of a game – especially for fast bowlers with quick, highly linear, stereotyped run-ups – run outs at the non-striker’s end are hard and should be practised like any other skill within the game.Unfortunately, this need is hindered by prominent coaches, captains, and other authority figures in the game not recognising non-striker run outs as a legitimate form of dismissal, to the point that it is suggested that should a player effect such a dismissal, the captain can opt to void the appeal. This confusion within the cricket community – which exists despite how clear the laws of the game are on the issue – may discourage players from training for a legitimate form of dismissal, leading to errors in execution during the moment of truth. Harshal’s own hesitation reflects the hesitation many in cricket have towards non-striker run outs generally. An event like this botched non-striker run out can indirectly serve as a reminder that teams need a full commitment to the laws of cricket, not to some nebulous “spirit of cricket”. This sentiment should not just be reflected in words and thoughts but also in training regimes and strategies, just like with any other element of cricket play.

Gardner picks up little cues and tips on oppositions in Hundred before ODI World Cup

The Australia allrounder talks about her fitness and diet regimes, gearing up for the ODI World Cup and her captaincy stint in the ongoing Hundred

        Valkerie Baynes20-Aug-20251:24

Gardner on using the Hundred to gauge the opposition

Every franchise tournament has its own unique flavour and quirks, none more so than the Hundred. But for all its overs turned “sets” and scoring graphics which confuse rusted-on cricket fans and newcomers alike, this year’s women’s competition offers a more conventional platform as an information-gathering exercise ahead of the 50-over World Cup.Ashleigh Gardner, the Australia allrounder and Trent Rockets captain, says it’s inevitable that players will be sizing each other up ahead of the global tournament in India and Sri Lanka in six weeks’ time.”From an opposition point of view, it’s probably trying to pick up things off your team-mates or people that you’re playing against, little cues that you can take back to your homeland and plan accordingly,” Gardner told ESPNcricinfo’s Powerplay podcast.Related

Amanda-Jade Wellington: 'Some strive to play for Australia, but that's not me'

Gardner: India a 'huge threat' in World Cup

“There’s no denying that and there’s probably other countries around the world, if you’re playing with another international, try and get some things from them or talk to them about, not necessarily their game plan, but just having those off-the-cuff conversations and trying to wrap your head around that because that’s so important.”We play a lot of cricket with these people and against them, so it’s, how can I try and get the upper hand where I can? Sometimes that’s going to be harder to do, but just looking at the game holistically.”While the formats differ and there are no India players involved in the Hundred this year, removing the chance to go up against players from a side Gardner believes will be a “huge threat” at the World Cup, there are several Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England stars in action.Australia will play an ODI series in India immediately before the World Cup and Pakistan will host South Africa from mid-September but for other sides, warm-up games will be the only other chance to gauge the opposition ahead of the tournament.”I’ve got potentially a longer time to bat and more overs to bowl, but I don’t think it really changes for me, I’ve always got the same mindset,” Gardner said. “I want to take the game on and I want to expose the areas of the game that I can, so for me, it’s trying to do that for longer periods of time.”India looked a class above their hosts in a recent 2-1 ODI series win in England, only losing the rain-affected second match at Lord’s, and Australia smashed England across formats during the Women’s Ashes in January, where the Australians’ superior fitness and athleticism was at the fore once again.1:32

Gardner: ‘Body image is a big one around female athletes’

The fallout from that series for England, who had already had their fitness questioned after their early exit from the T20 World Cup last October, was significant with a change of captaincy and new head coach Charlotte Edwards revealing that players would be held to minimum fitness standards from next year.Gardner gave some insight into how the Australians prepared for the “rude shock” of 50-over matches after playing in the shortened format of the Hundred.”We’re going to be spending double the time on our feet, so I know for us Aussie players, we play a game of cricket, but then the next day or that day we need to then run again, we need to gym,” she said.”It might be mentally taxing at the time, knowing that you have to play a game of cricket, which you’re obviously trying to win and be successful in, but also having one eye on the World Cup and making sure that our bodies are getting in the right spot.

“Body image is a really big one around female athletes and making sure that we’re fuelling and we’re not under-eating and things like that because of what someone else perceives your body to be”

“It’s making sure that training days are really big and you’re getting a lot out of that and then you’re doing your cricket skills, of course. Then game days, you’re trying to tick those off as well, so they do become quite big days.”I love playing franchise cricket, but playing for Australia is always going to be that No. 1 option for me, so making sure that I’ve got my focus on that as well.”Gardner also acknowledged the sensitivities around talking about fitness in women’s sport because the discussion becomes inextricably linked to body image.”Speaking from a personal perspective, I view myself as an athlete, so it’s how do I best get my body into shape and to be the fittest that I can be,” she said. “Body image is a really big one around female athletes and making sure that we’re fuelling and we’re not under-eating and things like that because of what someone else perceives your body to be. It’s making sure that you’re fit enough and you’re strong enough to complete those activities and making sure that you’re in the right head space while doing that.”People naturally get caught up with eating and things like that, which is obviously the real negative side to it because people naturally are worried about what other people perceive them as. I’ve certainly gone through things where you count calories and you do all this stuff and it clouds your mind. It actually doesn’t make you any clearer.Ash Gardner is leading Trent Rockets this year in the Hundred•Warren Little/Getty Images”For me, it’s, what does my body need from me right now? And making sure that I’m fuelling properly, because that’s what’s not going to get me injured. It’s making sure that I push my body to the limits in terms of I want to get really fit and strong, but how do I do that in the most manageable way possible to then be a good cricketer as well.”Meg Lanning, the former Australia captain, revealed last year that she had retired from international cricket in 2023 amid a battle with over-exercising and under-eating. Now in the next phase of her cricket career, she is leading the Hundred run-scoring charts. The Hundred has also given Gardner the chance to develop her captaincy skills. Having led Gujarat Giants during this year’s WPL, she took over at Trent Rockets when Nat Sciver-Brunt, the new England captain, opted for a player-only role with the franchise as a way of managing her workload.Trent Rockets sit sixth on the eight-team table with just one win from five games. Gardner has scored 130 runs at 26 and a strike rate of 144.44 with a highest score of 61 and taken three wickets at an economy rate of 7.76 including 2 for 14 against London Spirit in her side’s only victory this year so far.And while her ambition to leave the competition with the trophy has taken a hit, Gardner can still take plenty away from her experience.”Being able to lead, working through how I react in different situations and figuring myself out a little bit, I feel like once I do that, it gives me a really good opportunity to keep improving in that space,” she said. “Hopefully bringing success individually on the field and then being able to have the biggest impact for my team.”

No control, no problem: Crafty Dimuth Karunaratne conjures his own luck

Despite a relatively low control percentage among elite top-order batters, he has made 2021 his own with limited resources

Andrew Fidel Fernando24-Nov-2021The first ball he faced in the second innings, Dimuth Karunaratne makes a mistake. He doesn’t quite account for the turn Rahkeem Cornwall would get from his offbreak and edges it. But the ball falls short of gully.Luck? Maybe. This guy’s always lucky. What’s he got on his side? A rabbit’s foot? Witchcraft? In Cornwall’s next over, the first ball, he makes another error. He tries to hit Cornwall inside out, but is through the shot early, and just chips it over short cover. It begins to seem like another one of those Karunaratne innings, in which he isn’t batting so well, because not long after that, he’s hit on the pad by a straighter Cornwall delivery, and because he has played no shot, West Indies review the not out decision. The ball’s going on with the arm, but it’s not turning in, and as such, not hitting the stumps. Karunaratne survives again.Related

          • Karunaratne isn't perfect but he's the best Sri Lanka have got

A few overs after that, Cornwall beats Karunaratne’s outside edge with a ball that leaps off the surface. And then, Karunaratne misses a sweep, is hit in line with the stumps, and although West Indies appeal, they don’t review. This time, they should have. Wait. This is uncanny. Was this guy a Mandela-level human rights champion in a former life? Did he save orphans from a burning building in his teenage years? Why does the universe have such a hard-on for him?But take a step back, and you begin to see that this is the pattern that so many Karunaratne innings take. In the first innings, he was dropped at slip on 14 and scratched around desperately – particularly against Cornwall – in the first session. Even on day two, when he was already batting on more than a hundred, he seemed a supremely uncomfortable starter. On day four, he made a worse start than Oshada Fernando and Angelo Mathews – the only other Sri Lanka batters to last more than 30 deliveries. But then, he outscored both of them (Mathews was not out). There’s been a lot of that lately. In 2021, Karunaratne has now hit 854 runs, which puts him at No. 3 on the year’s run-chart, behind Joe Root and Rohit Sharma. What is special about his record this year, however, is his average of 77.63; no one else with more than 400 runs is close (Root’s average – the closest – is 66.13). And yet, if you look at the control percentages, Karunaratne doesn’t fare especially well. Root has been in control of 86.9% of the balls he has faced this year. Mominul Haque, the only other batter to have hit more than 400 runs and averaged over 60 in 2021, has been in control of 86.6% of his strokes. Karunaratne, meanwhile, has a control percentage of 82.1. This doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but among elite top-order batters, 4.5% in control is substantial. And yet, there are the runs. All those runs. His last five Test innings are basically a fantasy. A 75 when Sri Lanka were trying to draw a match in Antigua. A 244 in a drawn Test on a flat Pallekele track, followed by 118 and 66 in a Test that Sri Lanka won. And then, here, 147 off 300 in the first innings, and now, 83 off 104 in the second. Note the difference in those strike rates (49 in the first innings, 80 in the second).

“When he started off, he was a good player, but now he’s turned into a great player”Angleo Mathews on Dimuth Karunaratne

When Sri Lanka were trying to get a foothold in the game, Karunaratne was watchful and conscientious. When they needed to race to a big lead in the second dig after losing much of day three to rain, he was proactive. You expect a captain to always do what is right for the side, but in 2021, he has also been good at doing what is right. Besides this recent run of scores, Karunaratne had also hit a January hundred in the second innings in Johannesburg, when Sri Lanka were trying to save a Test.Mathews, who has played with him since Karunaratne earned a cricket scholarship for the same Colombo school, after having excelled for a smaller school, put it this way: “I’ve been with him since he started playing for college as well. We go back a long way. He’s improved tremendously. When he started off, he was a good player, but now he’s turned into a great player. He’ll definitely end up in the top three or four run-scorers for Sri Lanka. He’s found his rhythm, and he’s not been complacent. He’s hungry for runs. The way he applies himself on a wicket like this is amazing.”Karunaratne is perhaps not the kind of batter whose innings you’d ever call “masterful”. Those adjectives are reserved for the Kane Williamsons of the world, or the Virat Kohlis, Joe Roots, Babar Azams, and Steve Smiths. No one is suggesting he has that kind of talent. No one is saying his name should be taken in the same breath. But despite what the control percentages say, regardless of the nerviness of his starts, although he frequently looks like he doesn’t belong, in 2021, you can’t argue with those numbers. Karunaratne has had the kind of year in which he has put his arms around a modest top order, lifted them onto his back, and carried them to competence, when they have so often seemed clueless without him, such as in that terrible home series against England. Is he lucky, or does he make his own? Does he squeeze every run out of a limited technique, and by international batting standards, pretty average hand-eye coordination. He was a caretaker captain in ODI cricket for a while, and Sri Lanka kind of did alright. They are not a world-beating Test side, but in the series he’s been in charge, they’ve suggested they aren’t terrible either. Getting the most out of limited resources kind of seems like his thing.

Have you heard of Gus Atkinson yet? You soon will

Surrey quick’s stock is rising fast, and England are already watching his progress closely

Cameron Ponsonby06-Jul-2023Gus Atkinson’s stock is rising. Fast. He started the season outside the Surrey team, but three outstanding County Championship performances were all that was needed to propel him to being a whisker away from the Ireland Test squad, and only a handful of slips on the golf course from an Ashes debut.Atkinson’s rise is testament to England’s new mantra that how does, in fact, matter as much as how many. At 25 years old, Atkinson has played just 13 first-class matches and only recently become first-choice for his county, but in a running theme, people don’t need to see much of him to decide they’re a fan.A smooth run-up, a quick action and an even quicker short ball combine to make a player who is fast enough as it is and yet is legally obliged to be introduced by any commentator on radio or television as: “Gus Atkinson, right-arm-seamer, who’s just that bit faster than you think.” Comparisons to Jofra Archer, made at first by friends in jest, are now said with a straight face by those who actually know what they’re talking about: “Quite a few people have said that to me,” Atkinson smiles when asked. “A lot, actually.”His list of admirers extends from the revered old school of Michael Atherton, to the new-age number crunchers including England’s recently appointed white-ball analyst Freddie Wilde, who signed him twice in the last year, first for Oval Invincibles and then for Desert Vipers in the ILT20, before he joined the ECB. Over the winter, Atkinson also got deals to play in the Abu Dhabi T10 and was signed by Islamabad United in the PSL. And now he’s spearheading Surrey’s push for a place in the Vitality Blast Finals Day. With friends like these, who needs an IPL deal?It would be wrong, however, to say that Atkinson has come from nowhere. Surrey have been excited about the player ever since he returned to training as a slender 14-year-old and started hitting the coach’s mitt in bowling warm-ups far harder than the biology of his slight frame should have allowed.

I watched a video of myself bowling in 2020 or 2021 and I couldn’t believe it. I was like, oh my god, is that me? I was running in really slowly, it almost looked like I wasn’t trying.

In the same age-group as Ollie Pope, Sam Curran, Ryan Patel, Amar Virdi and Will Jacks, Atkinson for a while threatened to be the black sheep of this mystical, magical cohort. From signing as a professional in 2017, he watched on as all of his contemporaries debuted for Surrey by the end of 2018 – and in the case of Curran and Pope, for England – all while he sat on the sidelines nursing the unwanted fast-bowler threepeat of suffering a stress fracture in each of 2017, 2018 and 2019. It wasn’t until 2020, almost three years after putting pen to paper, that he would finally make his professional debut, but in 2022 the intangible qualities that Surrey had long seen in him started to turn into tangible results.”I wouldn’t say it was hard,” Atkinson reflects about watching his contemporaries move ahead of him. “Because they earned that and performed well. But I was always sort of thinking, ‘ach’, I was not where I wanted to be and I just felt like my career’s not flourishing. And obviously, you’re still young, but you do think that your career doesn’t last forever.”Fears over contract renewals were natural, but from Surrey’s end, the risk of letting Atkinson go far outweighed the cost of keeping him. There was a serious player in there, with the likes of Vikram Solanki, at the time the 2nd XI coach, being a vocal supporter and the instigator of a net that changed the trajectory of his career.”Two or three years ago, I had a bowl at LSE [London School of Economics] New Malden. Just me and Jordan Clark went down with Vikram Solanki and Vik was like, ‘run in and bowl as quick as you can’ and something just sort of clicked.”My run-up didn’t feel as good and we just sort of lengthened it out a bit and when I did that, it was like, pfff, it’s coming out well…let’s go for it.”Atkinson’s first-class career has taken a while to take off, but he’s getting noticed now•Getty ImagesCut to 2022 and the private school Bieber mop was gone, and in came a skin-fade, a beard and a pair of biceps. The result was a summer where Atkinson no doubt turned as many heads in Cafe Sol as he did in the ECB offices. He may have only played four Championship games and six Vitality Blast matches, but it was enough.”I watched a video of myself bowling in 2020 or 2021 and I couldn’t believe it. I was like, oh my god, is that me? I was running in really slowly, it almost looked like I wasn’t trying. And that obviously wasn’t the case, but I think I was holding myself back because of maybe a fear of injury or a fear of not performing.”In my head, before, I wasn’t not trying, I just didn’t really know how much I could.”At this point it is probably best to admit a personal bias here. Hailing from the same club and two years apart in age, Atkinson and I have known each other for roughly a decade. Near enough the last match we played together was when a 19-year-old me tricked a 17-year-old Gus into playing for the 3rd XI by not revealing the team in question until after he’d got the green light from his mum, Caroline, that he was available. Opening the batting, Gus scored zero runs. And opening the bowling, he took zero wickets. The match was later abandoned after one of our fielders hit his head on the ground whilst dropping a catch and an ambulance had to be called. Gus did not play for us again.Around that same time, I was coaching at the Stewart Cricket Centre, an academy run by Alec Stewart’s brother, Neil, where you-name-him-and-he’s-been-there has passed through. I asked Neil who the one player was, who he’d been sure would make it as a professional, but hadn’t, and his answer was Atkinson. Not because at that point Surrey were planning to release him, but simply because they never saw him. With his mum in London and dad overseas, summers were spent between the two, with cricket not necessarily left behind, but harder to be front and centre.”It’s the same for me!” Atkinson laughs when trying to make sense of the black hole in his cricket timeline that occurred from 16 to 19 years old.Related

“I played [at Surrey] since Under-11s but I was never one of the main guys because there were other lads who were better than me.”I always wanted to do cricket, but I don’t reckon I actually believed I could until after school and I went to Adelaide and did well.”The story goes that after duffing his A-Levels – “To be honest, I was never… school,” Atkinson grimaces in an incomplete sentence that millions would relate to – it was his mum who kept the Surrey wheels turning.”I think she sort of did that behind my back,” Atkinsons says. “Mum would email… just trying to keep me in the loop as much as possible, because I wasn’t ever really on the Academy. Like I would play Academy games and I would train every now and again, but I was never signed.”Through Caroline, Surrey stayed in contact and it was pre-season 2017 when Alec Stewart had a look and liked what he saw – “So I stuck around, played, and got a contract that summer.”Caroline would see Gus make his long-awaited debut for Surrey three years later, when he dismissed former England captain Alastair Cook, but was tragically killed in a car crash later that same year.”It’s obviously difficult,” Gus explains. “My sister started a Master’s a few weeks after it happened and she did that. My brother’s also started at university. We’ve just sort of, just carried on our lives really, there’s not really too much you can do apart from that.”I went into training three, four days after because I needed to get out of the house. I just needed to get away and escape.”As a player, Atkinson has a huge amount of goodwill surrounding him. And as a person, so does Gus. Introductions to people with the reference that “I know Gus Atkinson a bit” bring a smile, and depending on the company, a follow-up comment that “he’s a serious bowler.””You know,” Gus ponders on the England talk now following him. “Probably if you asked me six months ago, I would have said my goal is to just play cricket for England. And now, I probably go, ‘I would like to play for England in the next year’.”So, yeah,” he finishes with a smile. “I guess it is a big change.”

Is Suresh Raina's 5000 runs in the IPL the most for any T20 tournament?

Also: what’s the highest Test score to include a duck, and the lowest without one?

Steven Lynch26-Mar-2019I saw that Suresh Raina became the first to score 5000 runs in the IPL. Is this the most for any T20 competition worldwide? asked Ashok Mithunali from India
Suresh Raina nipped past the 5000 mark in Chennai Super Kings’ first match of the new IPL season when he reached 15 of his eventual 19 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on Saturday. Barring accidents, Virat Kohli will be next to the landmark: after that Chennai match, he was just 46 short of 5000. Next come Rohit Sharma (4498) and Gautam Gambhir (4217). The leading non-Indian, in seventh place with 4099 as I write, is David Warner.Helped by the fact that the IPL teams play so many matches, Raina’s haul is the most for any senior T20 tournament. Next comes the English Twenty20 Cup, in its various guises: Kent’s Joe Denly leads the way here with 3927 runs since his debut in 2004; he is ahead of Luke Wright (3699), Riki Wessels (3495) and Samit Patel (3465). The top scorer in the Caribbean Premier League is Chris Gayle, with 2111, while Michael Klinger tops the charts in the Australian Big Bash with 1947 runs, two more than Chris Lynn. The leader in the Bangladesh Premier League is Tamim Iqbal, with 1825.Was Isuru Udana’s score the other day the highest by a No. 8 in a T20I? asked Savo Ceprnich from South Africa
Isuru Udana’s blistering unbeaten 84 – from 54 balls – for Sri Lanka against South Africa in Centurion last week was easily the highest by a No. 8 in a T20 international. There had been only two previous half-centuries: Simi Singh made 57 not out for Ireland against Netherlands in Rotterdam last June, while Kenya’s Rageb Aga hit 52 not out against Scotland in Dubai in November 2013.I noticed that Ireland’s team for their second Test showed five changes from their maiden one. Was this a record? asked David O’Connor from Ireland
Ireland’s side for their second Test match – against Afghanistan in Dehradun earlier this month – did indeed show five changes from the team for their inaugural Test, against Pakistan at Malahide last May. Part of the reason for this was that Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien have retired, but the other changes were largely tactical. The only other team to make five changes between their first and second Tests were India, in matches against England at Lord’s in 1932 and in Mumbai in 1933-34. England, in Australia in 1876-77, are the only team to go into their second Test with exactly the same team as in the first.England’s total of 903 at The Oval in 1938 included Len Hutton’s 364, but also Eddie Paynter’s four-ball duck and Denis Compton’s 1•Getty ImagesWhat’s the highest Test total that included at least one duck in an innings? And conversely what’s the lowest score without one? asked Sukrit Jaiswal from Singapore
The highest Test score that included a duck is England’s 903 for 7 declared against Australia at The Oval in 1938. Len Hutton grabbed the headlines with 364 – but Eddie Paynter bagged a four-ball duck, and Denis Compton didn’t do much better, being out for 1. England’s total remained the Test record until 1997, when Sri Lanka piled up 952 for 6 against India in Colombo in 1997.The lowest total without a duck is Australia’s 75 against South Africa in Durban in 1949-50. No one was out for 0, but six men made 2 (including a not out) and Colin McCool managed only a single. Remarkably, Australia won that match despite a first-innings deficit of 236, reaching their target with five wickets to spare, thanks mainly to a magnificent unbeaten 151 from Neil Harvey. Is Ramnaresh Sarwan the only batsman to have made unbeaten scores of 99 and 98 in ODIs? asked Davo Kissoondari from Guyana
The short answer is yes, Guyana’s Ramnaresh Sarwan is the only player to have suffered this particular fate in one-day internationals. He made 99 not out for West Indies against India in Ahmedabad in 2002-03, and an unbeaten 98, also against India, in Kingston in May 2006. If we include dismissals, the leader in the oh-so-close stakes is Sachin Tendulkar, who was out for 99 three times and 98 once. Sanath Jayasuriya made two 99s and a 98. Michael Clarke (99 not out and 98), Adam Gilchrist (99 and 98), Matthew Hayden (99 and 98), Dean Jones (99 not out and 98), Mushfiqur Rahim (99 and 98) and Marlon Samuels (two 98s) all had two near-misses.Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions
