This was hardly the most ideal of ways to see out 2023. It was the year’s final day in the calendar when the Gunners headed across London to visit Fulham.
Having already drawn with the Cottagers at the Emirates Stadium just a few months before, Arteta will have rightfully been a tad nervous.
Perhaps that was shown in the performance as they ultimately lost 2-1. It all started swimmingly when Bukayo Saka found the net after just five minutes but the hosts came back fighting.
Raul Jimenez scored just before the half-hour mark and from that point onwards Arsenal failed to really get going, ultimately left to rue Bobby Reid’s winner in the 59th minute.
So, it would appear that Fulham are somewhat of a bogey team in recent years.

For the trip across town, the Gunners will definitely be without Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White who are both long-term absentees. White recently underwent surgery on a knee issue and isn’t due back in the squad until 2025.
The club are also sweating on the fitness of fellow defenders Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori. Both played against West Ham a week ago but sat out the 2-0 win over Manchester United through injury.
The positive news is that both players trained on Friday, although the bad news is that they weren’t with the full group.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta admitted that it could be a case of wait and see following Saturday’s training session.

That means Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior – two admirable performers from that win given a lack of game time – will drop out.
Beyond that, the only other change could see Leandro Trossard come back in for Gabriel Martinelli. It’s safe to say that the Belgian sees Craven Cottage as a happy hunting ground considering he actually registered three assists in the 3-0 win back in March 2023.
Martinelli has been hit and miss this term but Trossard does appear to be finding some form having scored against both Lisbon and West Ham in recent weeks.

The cost of renting generators for the five home games that each team will play can be as much as R2 million per stadium (US$ 117,000 approx.) and will come out of their hosting fees. Each stadium will be paid R850,000 (US$ 50,000 approx.) in hosting fees per match, plus an additional R220,000 (US$ 13,000 approx.) for other costs. For most grounds, this amount covers their logistical expenses, including electricity.The Wanderers in Johannesburg, because of its size, is an exception. While the ground has built-in generators and will only spend money on fuel, it costs them more than R1 million (US$ 58,000 approx.) to host a T20 match. The shortfall will be paid by the SA20 itself and ESPNcricinfo understands the stadium will only just break even over the course of the tournament. Smaller stadiums, such as Paarl’s Boland Park, will fare better as their operating costs are lower. The other four stadiums – SuperSport Park, Kingsmead, Newlands and St George’s Park – fall within the range between Johannesburg and Paarl, and are all expected to make a profit, even if small, from hosting the SA20.The financial benefit for the stadiums is different to what CSA, who are shareholders in the SA20, can expect to make overall. تحدث الحكم الدولي، محمود البنا، عن أسباب إعلان قرار اعتزاله مبكرًا، ليضع حدًا لمسيرته التحكيمية التي امتدت لأربعة وعشرين عامًا.
وكان محمود البنا، قد أكد في بيان رسمي نشره عبر صفحته الرسمية على موقع التواصل الاجتماعي “فيسبوك”، أن قرار اعتزاله جاء نتيجة ظروف غير عادلة، طالع التفاصيل
وقال محمود البنا، ضيف برنامج “الكورة مع فايق”، على قناة “إم بي سي مصر”، عن سبب الاعتزال المبكر: “قرار الاعتزال هو الأصعب لأي شخص يعمل في كرة القدم، خاصة للحكم الذي يتحمل الضغط وحده، سواء في التدريب أو العلاج أو مواجهة الجماهير والسوشيال ميديا”.
وتابع: “تحملت كل ذلك لأنني أحب التحكيم وأشعر بالتقدير، لكن حين شعرت بأني لم أعد مقدرًا رغم تاريخي المحلي والدولي، قررت الاعتزال”.
وبسؤاله هل الاعتزال بسبب عدم القدرة على العطاء؟، نفى ذلك تمامًا، مؤكدا أنه ما زال في قمة مستواه، وكان ضمن نخبة حكام “A” في كاف، ومعه محمد معروف وأمين عمر المرشحان لكأس العالم، مضيفًا أن وجوده في هذه النخبة أكبر دليل على جاهزيته.
وذكر أنه تم استبعاده من القائمة الدولية، وبالتالي استبعد تلقائيًا من بطولة أمم إفريقيا 2026، رغم أن أحد مسؤولي كاف أكد له أنه سيكون موجودًا في البطولة.
وكشف أنه عندما صدرت القائمة تفاجأ باختفاء اسمه، وهو ما أدى أيضًا إلى فقدان مصر مقعدًا من مقاعد الحكام في البطولة، بعد أن انخفض العدد من سبعة حكام العام الماضي إلى ستة هذا الموسم، رغم خبرته ومشاركته السابقة في بطولتين لأمم إفريقيا.
وعن أزمته مع أوسكار رويز، رئيس لجنة الحكام، أوضح أن مشكلته بدأت بعد تولي أوسكار رويز مسؤولية التحكيم؛ إذ شعر بأن استبعاده كان شخصيًا، وخلال الفترة التي عمل فيها معه أدار فقط أربع مباريات، وهو ما رآه غير منطقي مقارنة بتاريخه، إذ يعد أكثر حكام جيله إدارة للمباريات (188 مباراة)، وأدار أكبر عدد من لقاءات الأندية الجماهيرية والمباريات الكبرى محليا وإفريقيا.
وأشار إلى أنه عندما تواصل مع لجنة الحكام، أخبروه أن رويز يستبعده دون أسباب واضحة، فتحدث معه ليعرفه بتاريخه وخبرته الدولية، لكن رويز، بحسب حديث البنا، لم يتقبل الحوار، وتكرر الاستبعاد عند بداية الموسم الجديد.
البنا أكد أن استبعاده من القائمة الدولية كان “المسمار الأخير” في قراره، فالقائمة لم تعلن رغم أن كل دول إفريقيا أعلنت قوائمها، وهو يرى أن استبعاده بلا مبرر، خاصة أن معايير اختيار القائمة واضحة: اللياقة البدنية، اللياقة الطبية، المستوى الفني، وفيفا يطلب أفضل سبعة حكام في هذه المعايير، متسائلا: “كيف لا أكون من بين السبعة وأنا الذي أدرت أهم مباريات الموسم مثل السوبر؟”.
ورغم أن رويز أسند له السوبر المصري، يرى البنا أن ذلك لا ينفي استبعاده المتعمد، إذ إن القرار النهائي بيد الاتحاد، الذي، بحسب قوله، منح رويز كل الصلاحيات.
وعن “تجديد الدماء”، رفض البنا مبرر تجديد القائمة، لأن مصر لديها بالفعل حكمان مرشحان لكأس العالم (معروف وأمين عمر)، والقائمة ليست بها أزمة تستدعي الإطاحة بحكم صاحب خبرات ومشاركات كبرى، كما أن التحكيم المصري ممثل في بطولات الكاف بعدد جيد من الحكام.

“He’s a calm guy, very intelligent player, and sometimes you can get maybe a bit misled by judging him from his personality, because he is a hard defender and he is a guy who is not shy to have hard tackles and win challenges and step up in games,” said the German.
“He is very strong, very reliable and he has not reached his limits because at his age there is still room to improve. He can be a top defender for us in the next years and hopefully he will be because he comes from the academy.”
Should Newcastle want to land the Dane, however, they face competition from Manchester United, who are understood to have already put in an early £12.5 million offer for the 28-year-old.

Rooney thumped home a stunning strike against Arsenal to score his first Premier League goal at 16, whilst Owen quickly became the main man at Liverpool and even won the Ballon d’Or at just 22 years old.
It’s when both players meet in the middle at 18 that the debate gets interesting, however, and Rooney has now finally settled things with a swift 12-word response.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney settled the Owen debate with a simple 12-word answer after taking a look at the numbers all these years later.
Owen also responded to the debate back in September, saying on X: “At 17 I scored 18 PL goals (winning the Golden Boot), Wazza scored 6. At 18 I again scored 18 goals (again winning the Golden Boot and coming 4th in The Ballon d’Or), Wazza scored 9. In our opening 7 seasons, Wazza didn’t outscore me once (117 goals v 80).”
It seems as though Rooney agrees with his former rival, who certainly built his own convincing case last month, but there’s no denying that it is the former United star who enjoyed the better career in the end.
As Owen struggled with injuries, Rooney broke records, won Premier League titles and has his rightful place amongst the best players that English football has ever seen.
