Update from "internal" source on rumoured Arsenal bid for Santiago Gimenez

da bwin: A fresh update has emerged from the camp of Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez after reports that Arsenal had bid for his services over the weekend.

Arsenal back on track against Wolves

da betano casino: After a pair of damaging results saw Arsenal lose control of the Premier League title race and drop out of Europe at the quarter-final stages, Mikel Arteta's side got back to winning ways courtesy of a 2-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

It is a result that lifts them back to the top of the Premier League as things stand, with Liverpool behind them on goal difference and Manchester City trailing by a point but with a game in hand on both clubs.

Arsenal could fetch a £173m fee by selling their "monster" talent

The Arsenal star is the joint-second highest valued player in England.

ByTom Lever Apr 21, 2024

The Gunners face Chelsea next at the Emirates Stadium before a trip across north London to take on Tottenham over the weekend, with the Gunners likely needing to take three points from both London derbies to still be in consideration for the title come the end of the weekend.

There are still areas of improvement needed though, with Arteta's side clearly still lacking a spark in central midfield and also a reliable goalscoring striker. As it stands, only Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard have reached double figures this season for goals, with no one breaching the 20 goal mark yet.

Despite being the highest scorers in the competition, there is a feeling that Arsenal need more, and they have been credited with an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexican has enjoyed a fine campaign to date, scoring 24 times and grabbing 7 assists in 40 outings for his side in all competitions. On Friday, it was reported that Arsenal were one of many sides pushing to sign the 23-year-old, and there were even rumours that Arsenal had made a bid for his services.

Gimenez to Arsenal update

Now, a fresh update has emerged on the status of Arsenal's interest in the £29k-a-week Gimenez, and it appears to be just that for now. As per Mexican outlet Azteca Deportes [Via Sport Witness], an "internal Feyenoord source" has relayed to them that no bid has been forthcoming from any party, with the Gunners part of a trio of sides keen on signing Gimenez.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also keeping a close eye, but again have not made an offer and there has been "no formal approach" for the striker from any of the three clubs in question.

It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal's interest firms up into something more serious in the coming weeks and months, but he would certainly solve a problem the Gunners seem to have in central areas, and is reportedly available at a bargain price of just £40m this summer, which would allow plenty of scope to rebuild the squad elsewhere too.

West Indies pace attack 'can challenge any team in the world' – Estwick

Assistant coach says West Indies’ fast-bowling stocks are at their highest since the 1980s

Alan Gardner15-Jun-2020England have felt the heat from West Indies’ resurgent battery of quicks on more than one occasion in recent years, most notably during heavy defeats in Barbados and Antigua 18 months ago. The fires stoked by Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder have drawn comparison with West Indies attacks of old, and the team’s assistant coach, Roddy Estwick agreed that Caribbean fast-bowling stocks were at their highest since the 1980s.Roach, notably, dismantled England with match figures of 8 for 82 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in 2019, having claimed 5 for 17 as the tourists were shot out for 77 the week before in Bridgetown, and has already indicated he is keen to “get stuck into them” again on this tour. While his regular new-ball partner Gabriel is currently working his way back from an ankle injury, young talents Alzarri Joseph and Chemar Holder – described by coach Phil Simmons as a potential “great of West Indies cricket” – are also in the squad to face England.Gabriel could still come into contention if he can prove his fitness, while alongside him in West Indies’ 11-man back-up group are the likes of Oshane Thomas, Anderson Phillip and Keon Harding. Even without Jofra Archer, who played for West Indies U19s but will line-up for England, such strength in depth suggests the Caribbean is once again “blessed” with pace options.ALSO READ: Simmons: WI will be ready and looking to defend our trophy”The fast bowling is very key to us,” Estwick said. “Shannon, Jason, Alzarri, Kemar. The four big fast bowlers, they’re here but what we’ve [also] got on this tour is a group of youngsters coming through: Chemar Holder, Oshane Thomas, Anderson Phillip. We’re beginning to get blessed with fast bowlers again in the West Indies, so that’s an exciting time for us. So we’re looking forward to this series and looking forward to seeing how the fast bowlers go.”Roach’s importance becomes clear when you look at the performances of West Indies’ quicks since he returned to the Test set-up in 2017, on their last tour of England. In that period, only a handful of fast bowlers have taken their wickets at a better strike rate than Roach’s 45.6. Not far behind are Holder (45.9) and Gabriel (47.6), while England’s most penetrative seamer over the same timeframe is 37-year-old James Anderson, who strikes every 53.4 balls.Estwick has worked regularly with Roach, Gabriel and Holder since he was first appointed bowling coach in 2016, and said that they now had the necessary combination of fitness and experience to challenge batting line-ups around the world.”So there’s six or seven around the age of 20, 22-23, so that’s really exciting. Once we can put programmes in place and get them up to a certain standard and get them fit, we should have that pyramid we’re looking for, and once Shannon and Roachy move on, we’ve got people to fill their boots.”West Indies have been training at Old Trafford since landing in England last week and Estwick suggested the bowlers were currently operating at around 80%, with players on both sides striving to get match fit after a long break due to Covid-19 lockdowns. Gabriel has not played at all since September but Estwick said he had regained some of his confidence after ankle surgery and would be trusted to tell the management if he felt he could make it through a Test match. After memorable encounters in 2017 and 2018-19, this series will mark the third time teams led by Holder and Joe Root have contested the Wisden Trophy. West Indies’ Headingley win three years ago was their first in Tests in England since 2000, and Estwick held out the hope they could go one further over the coming weeks.”We got beaten badly at Edgbaston and regrouped and had a famous win at Headingley. What that tells us is that we can compete,” he said. “If you look over the two series, for me you would say the series is three-all right now. England won two Test matches over here in 2017, and we won one; we won two in the Caribbean, and they won one. So the series for us is all square, so we need now to win this series just to get ahead. We won on home soil, they won on home soil, so it’s all up for grabs. We’ve got to make sure we find the extra motivation, and if we can we can spring a surprise.”

Everton wasted £28m on Ancelotti signing who hurt their PSR hopes

da bet esporte: Everton have made some questionable decisions with transfers over the last few years, which is one of the reasons the club have found themselves in hot water with the Premier League.

da 888casino: The Toffees have been hit with multiple points deductions this campaign, with Sean Dyche's side accumulating eight points for multiple breaches of PSR and FFP.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Signings of players such as Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Yerry Mina cost the club over £50m, with the duo both departing Goodison Park on free transfers upon the end of their contracts.

However, the club can add another player to their list of talents who have failed to replicate their best form at the club, after he departed the Toffees a couple of years ago after an unsuccessful stint at the club.

Allan's stats at Everton

After arriving at Goodison Park for £21m during the summer of 2020, Brazilian midfielder Allan had high expectations of succeeding after his impressive five-year stint at Napoli.

He made 24 appearances in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, starting all but one of Everton's first 13 matches of the campaign. However, a muscle issue would see him miss all of January and February before returning in March and enjoying another permanent place in the starting lineup.

Allan would keep his starting role throughout the following campaign, under the guidance of Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard. The Brazilian would be a mainstay under the Spaniard but would fall down the pecking order under the former Chelsea boss.

He only started nine games under the Chelsea legend, before not playing in four of the five remaining Premier League games during the 2021/22 season.

His lack of minutes would see him depart Goodison during the summer of 2022, with the club doing a brilliant job of offloading the midfielder given his hefty weekly wage of £70k-per-week – equating to roughly £7.2m in total across the two seasons, as per Capology.

Allan's wage in 2024

Allan – who cost Everton around £28m when combining his total salary and initial transfer fee – departed the club for a move to the United Arab Emirates side Al Wahda for an undisclosed fee to play regular football after a stop-start period under Lampard.

He's since managed to appear 50 times for the club in just over 18 months, with the 33-year-old finding form in front of goal, scoring three times and creating four assists in 18 matches this campaign.

The Brazilian still earns a whopping £86k-per-week as per Salary Sport, with Everton having needed to shift his huge weekly earnings to create some wriggle room in their battle to comply with PSR rules.

Despite his immediate impact on the first-team squad, the club did the right thing by offloading the ageing talent, with the one-time Napoli man notably dubbed an "imposter" due to his dismal displays away from Goodison – as per broadcaster David Downie.

Also branded as a figure who "can't run" by talkSPORT pundit Harry Redknapp – while once also completing just two passes in 73 minutes of a Merseyside derby – Allan was certainly an unwanted and unneeded drain for those on Merseyside.

The Toffees arguably now have much better options in the middle of the park, thankfully, with the likes of Amadou Onana and James Garner far more influential than the veteran midfielder ever was.

Everton may have to sell "magnificent" ace to avoid further PSR woes

The club could still yet receive a further punishment.

Jason Gillespie in limbo as Covid-19 travel bans leave county coaches grounded

Michael di Venuto and Dave Houghton are also out of the UK and awaiting developments

Matt Roller22-Apr-2020

Jason Gillespie is used to long-haul flights thanks to a long playing career and holding down coaching roles in two different countries, but his March travel itinerary would make even the most seasoned traveller wince.Soon after he flew from Adelaide to Cape Town via Dubai for Sussex’s pre-season camp, it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic meant it was unwise for the county’s squad to be overseas, meaning that after a week in South Africa he was on the move again, flying back to the UK. And 48 hours after landing, amid constant conversations with the club’s hierarchy, he was in the air heading back to Australia, when it became clear the county season would be postponed for some time.”It was a bit of whirlwind, that’s for sure,” Gillespie said. “The situation changed quite quickly, and quite considerably in a matter of days. The plan was to try and get everyone back safely to the UK. I was in my flat in Hove and had a couple of conversations with our CEO [Rob Andrew].”The club said: look, you’re probably best to be at home with your family. I had to self-isolate for two weeks. I’m fortunate that my mum lives in a little house just round the corner from where we are, so I stayed at hers. I had the kids coming down with my groceries and leaving them on the back porch.”ALSO READ: The Hundred’s future uncertain as ECB board prepares for postponementSelf-isolation complete, Gillespie is back with his family and feels safe: there has not been a new confirmed case of Covid-19 in South Australia for three days, and there are signs that an end to lockdown may not be too far away. But there is a complication. Australian citizens are currently banned from travelling abroad indefinitely, and while there is naturally little clarity on the likely duration of restrictions, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has repeatedly suggested a six-month time frame is likely. That means that if the delayed English season is able to get underway – and the ECB board will meet on Thursday to discuss contingency planning – there is no guarantee that Gillespie will be able to get back to fulfil his role.”We just have to wait and see,” he said. “There’s so many logistical things to consider. If the season does get up and running, I’d probably have to self-isolate in the UK before I can link up with the squad – if I can even leave Australia.”I haven’t been thinking about it too much, because we simply don’t know. We’re all in the same boat, where health and safety are the priorities. We’ll have to wait and see: I know [Surrey coach] Michael di Venuto is in that boat too, and a good mate of mine who lives here in South Australia Mark Cosgrove plays at Leicestershire. What does he do?”Like Gillespie, Surrey coach Michael di Venuto is in Australia with his family•Getty Images

Derbyshire coach Dave Houghton is in the same position as di Venuto and Gillespie: he is currently in Zimbabwe with his family, with no clarity over when he will be able to return to the UK. Other non-British coaches – Adi Birrell (Hampshire), Stuart Law (Middlesex) and James Franklin (Durham) – are currently in England.Similarly, while several counties have cancelled or deferred the contracts of their overseas signings – Gillespie hopes that Travis Head will be able to join Sussex in 2021 if he is unable to play for the club this year – there are question marks hanging over several cricketers who count as ‘local’ players via EU passports or the Kolpak loophole, but are not currently in the UK. While Dane Vilas and Simon Harmer, for example, are in England, Stiaan van Zyl, David Wiese and Vernon Philander are among various players in South Africa with no clarity over the prospects of leaving.ALSO READ: Little appetite for upheaval as ECB begin review into Watmore appointmentThere is some hope that Thursday’s ECB board meeting might provide some kind of clarity about the likelihood that a season will be possible, but it seems probable that those overseas will be left in limbo until government advice is updated and an end to the UK’s lockdown comes into sight. For the time being, then, there is little that Gillespie can do to change things. Instead, he has been reaching out to his squad to keep in touch – “the mental side of all this is really important” – and is enjoying an unusually long period at home with his family.”That’s the one good thing – I don’t think we’ve ever spent this much time together as a family ever, with my job and the nature of cricket. I’m doing my running to keep busy, and one of my sons has challenged me to slam dunk a full-sized basketball, so I’ve been doing all kinds of jumping training, skipping, lots of plyometrics.”On my birthday [Monday] I did a jumping session with the kids, and slam-dunked a size three, so my son said: ‘dad, why don’t you try and dunk the bigger one?’ With my last jump I reckon I ripped my quad, because I’ve been struggling to move for the last few days.” Needless to say, struggling to move may prove to be a theme of the next few months.

Ten Hag must now drop Man Utd star after his 5/10 Liverpool display

da leao: Manchester United came into their clash with Liverpool with the chance to upset all three of their fierce rivals.

da winzada777: Having secured a 2-2 draw in a frantic match at Old Trafford it certainly upset Jurgen Klopp's side who spurned the chance to reclaim top spot in the Premier League.

For Manchester City and Arsenal, it was a hugely positive result, one which grouped the title challengers to within a point.

For United, they have now only won once in their last six league matches and a draw, albeit a surprising one on this occasion, only means they have more work to do in their bid for Champions League football next term.

There have been positives; notably that of Kobbie Mainoo whose remarkable rise to stardom only continued on Sunday, scoring what he thought was the winner.

The England international gathered the ball in his stride before placing a gorgeous effort into the top corner. His incredible performances have come just at the right time, with the teenager now outshining £70m signing and multiple Champions League winner Casemiro.

Casemiro's performance vs Liverpool in numbers

When the Brazilian signed for United in the summer of 2022, question marks were understandably raised.

Although the Red Devils were bringing one of the most decorated midfielders in the game to the Premier League, he was now in his 30s and reaching the latter stages of his career.

Signing an ageing player is not always a bad thing; they bring experience, know-how and quality. Yet, they have no resale value and when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong.

This has been the case for Casemiro, notably in his second campaign with United where he has cut a rather forlorn figure in the middle of the pitch, constantly at fault and criticised for his lack of athleticism which has been found out in England's top-flight.

After another disappointing display against Liverpool this weekend, commentator Ian Darke remarked "Casemiro can’t really run anymore." Those are apt words indeed.

Casemiro

That has been a regular criticism towards the former Real Madrid hero who no doubt suffers from a lack of organisation in United's midfield, but has largely suffered as a result of his overall performance levels which simply haven't been good enough.

What rather summed up Casemiro's campaign was a moment in the second half when he went to press goalscorer Luis Diaz. The 32-year-old headed towards the Liverpool winger, only to be skipped past as though he wasn't even there.

That was one of two times Casemiro was dribbled past throughout an ineffective display that Man United personality Mark Goldbridge claimed was an "absolute stinker".

Further criticism came from Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst who gave the £350k-per-week earner a 5/10 match writing, writing: 'Squandered a good headed-chance by trying to pick out a teammate and irked the crowd by kicking the ball out. More prudent on the ball in the second.'

Somehow lasting the full 90 minutes, the midfielder ended the match with the worst pass completion rate of any player to start the game (67%), having ceded possession on 16 occasions. Only two players in United red managed more; Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

This was another off day for Casemiro and next time around he must be dropped. With Mason Mount now returning to the fray, even scoring against Brentford, perhaps he deserves a run-out next to Mainoo? It can't get any worse, surely?

Sophie Devine and Tim Southee honoured by peers

Devine joins Kane Williamson as only players to win the top honour three years in a row

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-20202:16

‘Means a lot to be voted by peers and mates’ – Southee

Sophie Devine and Tim Southee were honoured by their peers for their performances in the 2019-20 season in an online ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Zealand women’s skipper receiving the Cricket Players’ Association Players’ Award and the men’s fast bowler getting the Players’ Cap.While this is the second time Southee has won the honour (after 2013), for Devine it’s an incredible three-in-a-row, helping her match Kane Williamson, who had won it from 2015 to 2017.Devine has been in fantastic form in the period under consideration, especially with the bat. At the recent women’s T20 World Cup, she finished seventh in the list of top run-getters with 132 runs from four innings. And prior to the World Cup, she was in stunning form at home against South Africa, scoring an incredible 54*, 61, 77 and 105 in the T20I series, while also picking up four wickets.”It’s certainly not about the individual, it’s about the team,” Devine said afterwards in a video chat. “It does really mean a lot to be recognised over the past 12 months by your team-mates, especially because we haven’t played a lot of cricket apart from the last month or two, but yeah, really special to be able to win this award.”It’s been a pretty busy couple of months. We didn’t have too much (cricket) last year, so we were working hard in Lincoln and we had a really good series against South Africa and obviously went pretty deep in the T20 World Cup last month. The quality of the side we’ve got, we’re obviously really disappointed with the way we didn’t manage to get out of the group stage at the T20 World Cup. As you saw, the two teams we lost to were the two finalists, and we lost by four or five runs [three runs to India and four to Australia] to both of them.”She called the results at the World Cup “really positive signs”, and hoped that once cricket resumes, the team can get together and build towards the 50-over World Cup, to be played at home in New Zealand next year.Southee, meanwhile, became the third to win the Cap more than once, joining Williamson and Ross Taylor, who had won it last year.It was a big season for Southee, too, especially in Test cricket, where he picked up 33 wickets in six games.”I was a little surprised. I think there’s a number of guys who would’ve been worthy runners-up of the award,” Southee said. “I think it just shows you that the type of cricket and the brand of cricket we have played over the last 12 months, a number of different guys have stepped up at different times.”Speaking about the season itself, especially beating England and India in Test series at home on either side of a poor tour of Australia, Southee said, “To finish the summer strongly after a disappointing tour of Australia was pleasing for the guys to be able to bounce back. The T20s, I guess, were a bit of a mixed bag [they lost 5-0 to India] but that can be the format at times. And the way we were able to beat a very good Indian side three-nil in the one-day series and finish the summer was very pleasing.”
