The English boss swooped to sign the former Everton youth prospect from Norwich City last summer, upon the expiry of his contract at Carrow Road.

Dowell produced 12 goals and six assists in 75 appearances for the Canaries in all competitions across his three-year spell in Norfolk, having joined from the Toffees in the summer of 2020.

His first season with Norwich was disrupted by an ankle injury that kept him out for 14 Championship matches from September to December 2020.

He was then an unused substitute in eight of the next 18 league games, as the talented gem continued to recover from his injury, before an impressive end to the campaign with five goals and one assist in 12 matches as Norwich won promotion to the Premier League.

Dowell followed that up with one goal and one assist in just 19 Premier League outings throughout the 2021/22 campaign, as the Yellows were relegated back down to the second tier in England.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed whiz provided quality as a scorer and a creator in his limited starts for Norwich in the Championship.

Those limited starts, however, came as a result of him being absent from a whopping 19 matchday squads throughout the campaign as he struggled to remain fit for a consistent period of time.

Overall, Dowell started just 37 league matches across the Premier League and Championship combined in his three seasons with the Canaries, which should have served as a warning to Beale and Rangers.

The 26-year-old whiz has only made 12 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues since his move to Ibrox on a free transfer last summer.

Dowell has missed out on the matchday squad, through either selection or injury, on a staggering 35 occasions domestically and in Europe this season.

He is currently out with an injury that was sustained during the winter break in January as the midfielder got his studs stuck in the pitch, and Clement claimed that the Beale signing would be out for around two months. However, it remains to be seen exactly when he will make his return to first-team action.

Arguably, the most frustrating part about his situation is that the ex-Norwich star has shown glimpses of quality when he has been available for selection.

As you can see in the table above, Dowell caught the eye in his two league starts in December with his quality in and out of possession in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, his consistent injury issues have made him an unreliable option for Clement, as his ability on the pitch is irrelevant when he cannot be on the field, which is why Beale had a nightmare with the signing as those issues plagued his career at Norwich as well.

The warning signs were there for the Gers but they did not heed them, and they now have a rarely-available midfielder who earns more than one of the manager's key performers – Souttar.

Dowell is currently – per Salary Sport – on a wage of £16k-per-week, and that is more than Abdallah Sima (£8.5k-per-week), Ryan Jack (£8k-per-week), and the central defender Souttar, who is on £8.1k-per-week.

The Scotland international, who recorded a dismal 5.9 Sofascore rating for his country against the Netherlands in a 4-0 loss on Friday, has been a reliable performer for the Gers this season.

Souttar, who had his own injury problems last term with 46 games out due to an ankle issue, has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the club – almost three times as many as Dowell despite earning almost half as much in wages.

As you can see in the table above, the Rangers colossus has been a man mountain at the back for both Beale and Clement this season with his dominant defensive work.

Opposition players have rarely been able to get the better of him in physical contests, on the floor or in the air, which has contributed to the club having the best defensive record in the division – with at least seven fewer goals conceded than any other team.

He has formed a strong partnership with Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence for Clement and there is little to suggest that his position in the XI is in any danger any time soon.

This illustrates how much of a nightmare Rangers have had with Dowell as they are spending more money on his services, to rarely be available to play, than they are on an integral member of their starting XI in Souttar.

Hopefully, the attacking midfielder can overcome his injury problems and eventually emerge as a key player for the club. At this time, however, it looks to have been a howler of a signing by Beale.

Yet, even if they lift the Scottish Premiership in May, Rangers look set for several changes, with contracts running out and players set to depart. As of right now, the Gers are set to lose John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe as free agents this summer, whilst Ridvan Yilmaz's future is also in doubt, according to reports.

Those departures are set to leave gaping holes in Clement's squad, which will need to be filled with further incomings when the summer window swings open. And that's exactly what Rangers' recruitment team seemingly has in mind.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Rangers' recruitment team have highlighted the need for a new left-back, central midfielder and striker to Clement this summer as part of a major overhaul, with those five names expected to be replaced by three top signings.

It remains to be seen just who those recruits will be, but as loan deals for the likes of Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes come to an end, it will be interesting to see if the champions-elect look to make permanent moves for their loanees in the coming months. If they help the Gers on their way to the league title, then they'd have certainly earned summer switches.

Rangers should look inwards for permanent deals

Whilst new targets will undoubtedly emerge this summer, Rangers would be best-served by turning towards those who have already made an impact at Ibrox in players like Cortes and Silva. Both players have particularly impressed, with the former unfortunate to suffer a recent injury to interrupt part of his loan spell.

Reports have already suggested that Rangers want to sign Cortes on a permanent basis this summer, whilst they already have an obligation to buy Mohamed Diomande after his loan spell. The midfielder is a ready-made replacement for Jack, who is on course to depart as a free agent come the end of the season.

If they end the current campaign as champions, then logic suggests that Rangers will be in a far stronger position to attract further reinforcements this summer, in what should only result in an improved side and potential title defence next season.

Clement's already transformed the Gers in his first five moments and could make an even greater impact in his first full season in charge. Gearing up for a busy summer, change is afoot once more at Ibrox under the guidance of the Belgian.

The 26-year-old forward also lost possession 12 times from 39 touches. This suggests that the winger was sloppy on the ball, particularly when you consider that he did not create a single chance for his teammates, as he lost it every 3.25 touches on average despite having little impact on the game outside of his goal.

A lack of quality in the final third has been an issue for the Japanese wide man throughout the 2023/24 Premiership season, as he has struggled to consistently deliver goals and assists.

The right-footed whiz produced eight goals and five assists in 25 league starts under Ange Postecoglou last term, which was a return of one goal or assist every 1.92 starts on average.

He has not been successful in replicating that form for Rodgers since the ex-Leicester City boss replaced the Australian tactician last summer.

Maeda has started 19 matches, and made two appearances off the bench, in the Premiership so far this season, and contributed with four goals and two assists.

This means that his average starts per goal contribution has fallen to every 3.17 starts, with six in 19 starts for the Scottish giants in the top-flight.

He has registered four goals in 19 starts but could have had more had it not been for wasteful finishing. No player in the Celtic squad has underperformed their Expected Goals by more than Maeda (minus 2.74).

His teammates have provided him with 6.74 xG worth of chances in the final third but he has only scored four, which shows how poor his finishing has been this term.

The Japan international has also struggled to create for his fellow attackers. He currently ranks 22nd in the squad for key passes per game (0.5), and is below the likes of Liam Scales and Tomoki Iwata, who play in defensive positions.

These statistics illustrate Maeda's struggles at the top end of the pitch as he has been inconsistent as a finisher and rarely provided his teammates with quality as a creator.

The stats that show why Luis Palma should replace Maeda

The Japanese winger must now be brutally ditched from the starting XI on the left flank as Luis Palma has the ability to offer more in attack for the Hoops.

Signed from Greek side Aris on a permanent deal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, the Honduras international has provided a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals throughout the Premiership season.

The 5 foot 10 whiz, who was hailed as "tremendous" by Chris Sutton earlier this term, has been more consistent in front of goal than Maeda, with a slight underperformance of six goals from 6.9 xG.

This suggests that Palma is more likely to tuck away a chance than the former Yokohoma F. Marinos star, given that the Japan international has two fewer goals from 0.16 less xG.

The 24-year-old magician also has far more quality when it comes to creating chances in the final third for his teammates, based on their respective statistics in the Premiership this season.

As you can see in the table above, the ex-Aris dynamo has provided far more chances, and more high-quality chances, for his fellow attackers than Maeda.

In fact, no player in the Premiership has registered more assists, and only two players – Danny Armstrong and James Tavernier – have created more big chances than Palma this season.

This shows that the Celtic maestro has been one of the outstanding creative talents in the top-flight since his move to the club last summer.
