da doce: Celtic welcome RB Leipzig to Parkhead in the Champions League this evening as they look to win for the first time since matchday one against Slovan.
da poker: The Hoops thumped the Slovakian side 5-1 in Glasgow on their opening night in the League Phase but their two matches since that have not been quite as comfortable.
Brendan Rodgers’ side followed up their win over Slovan with a devastating 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Germany, a game in which they were 5-1 down by half-time.
They then battled hard to secure a 0-0 draw away at Atalanta in their most recent outing in the Champions League, which means that they have four points in their three matches so far.
The Scottish giants had to dig in deep to land a draw in Bergamo, as the home side dominated the match – with 66% possession – and racked up 2.38 xG worth of chances without scoring.
Leipzig are currently second in the Bundesliga, with six wins and five goals conceded in nine games, and Celtic could face a similar test at Parkhead this evening, which means that they will have to contain the German side’s biggest threats.
RB Leipzig's biggest threats
They typically line up in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-2-2 system and this means that they often have two centre-forwards to occupy the defence and cause problems in the final third.
Those two strikers have, for the majority of this season, been Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko, who both offer different kinds of attributes at the top end of the pitch.
RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.
Openda is a fleet-footed, mobile, marksman who likes to make runs off the last line and has showcased his goalscoring quality this term, with five goals in eight Bundesliga starts, although he is yet to score in Europe.
Leipzig’s biggest threat in the Champions League so far, though, has been Sesko, who has scored three goals in three games in the competition – with two strikes against Juventus and one against Dortmund.

As you can see in the table above, the Slovenia international has scored six goals from just 4.82 xG across the Bundesliga and the Champions League this term.
The 6 foot 5 titan has also won the majority of his aerial battles, winning 2.3 per game on average, and scored two headers across both competitions, which illustrates how much of a challenge it will be to keep him quiet tonight.
Sesko is a centre-forward who offers quality in front of goal, as shown by his xG overperformance, as well as a physical presence for the centre-backs to deal with, which is why Rodgers must brutally ditch Auston Trusty from his starting XI.
Why Auston Trusty should be dropped
The USA international, who was signed from Sheffield United on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window, was selected to start alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers in the 6-0 win over Aberdeen in the League Cup at Hampden Park on Saturday.
His performance was rewarded with a player rating of 8/10 from The Scotsman, who wrote that the centre-back was rarely troubled by the Dons and kept things neat and tidy in possession.
Auston Trusty
Despite a strong showing, and a clean sheet, against Aberdeen, Rodgers must take the former Arsenal man out of the starting line-up as Sesko could take advantage of his struggles with aerial duels.
In the Premier League last term, Trusty barely won the majority of his battles in the air, winning 55% overall, as the Blades were relegated and conceded a staggering 104 times in 38 outings.

As you can see in the table above, the central defender has struggled badly in the air in the Champions League this season, losing a whopping 75% of his contests.
These statistics suggest that Sesko, given his aerial dominance, could take advantage of the summer signing in those situations to cause Celtic huge problems, which is why Rodgers must take Trusty out of the team to avoid that issue. T
The Celtic titan who should replace Auston Trusty
The Hoops head coach must unleash Liam Scales in his place in order to give the Scottish giants the best possible chance of silencing the former RB Salzburg sensation.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Unlike Trusty, the Republic of Ireland international is a towering central defender who has the presence and physicality to consistently dominate opposition forwards in the air, in the Premiership and in the Champions League.
In the 0-0 draw with Atalanta last time out in Europe, the former Aberdeen loanee won five of his seven aerial contests and made nine clearances to help his side keep a clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Trusty got away with losing five of his six aerial duels in that game because Mario Pasalic failed to score from any of his six headed attempts, which generated an xG of 1.0.
Sesko’s form for Leipzig this season, particularly aerially, suggests that he would not be as forgiving as the Atalanta midfielder was in front of goal, which is why the Hoops cannot afford to have a centre-back who is a liability in those situations tonight.

As you can see in the table above, Scales has dominated players in the Premiership and in the Champions League in aerial contests this season.
The left-footed brute, who was lauded as “fantastic” for the team by Rodgers, has proven that he has the physical and defensive qualities that will be needed to keep a player of Sesko’s quality quiet this evening.
That is why the manager must bring him back into the starting XI to play on the left side of the defence, with Cameron Carter-Vickers on the right.

Sussex 220 and 39 for 1 trail Worcestershire 438 for 5 (Libby 215) lead by 179 runsOpener Jake Libby made a career-best 215 as Worcestershire put themselves in position to push for victory over Sussex and keep their promotion hopes alive in the LV= Insurance County Championship. Libby’s maiden double-century came in a total of 438 for 5 before Worcestershire declared with a lead of 218 on day three at the 1st Central County Ground, having banked maximum bonus points.Play didn’t start at Hove until 4.10pm because of rain and 84 overs have been lost in the match so far but Worcestershire quickly made up for lost time, Libby leading the charge as they thrashed 149 in 20 overs against some toothless bowling before the declaration.Sussex were left with ten overs to negotiate, and they lost skipper Tom Haines for 13 in the penultimate over when he played on to Joe Leach. They closed on 39 for 1, still 179 behind.Sussex had taken the new ball when play eventually began after heavy rain but it was soon being dispatched to all parts by Libby and Jack Haynes. Pakistan allrounder Faheem Ashraf came in for some harsh treatment, his three overs costing 30 runs including three successive boundaries by Libby which took him past his previous best score of 184.He added 96 in 22 overs with Haynes, who played on to Brad Currie for 31, but skipper Brett D’Oliveira kept up the momentum when he joined Libby. D’Oliveira offered a difficult chance off a top-edged pull but Ali Orr, running round the boundary, couldn’t quite hold on as he stepped over the rope. Otherwise, the pair scored at more than seven runs an over even though Sussex had seven fielders on the boundary.Libby brought up his 200 with a single off James Coles and offered his first chance on 204, but wicketkeeper Oli Carter spilled a straightforward opportunity moving to his right. Libby was eventually dismissed by Coles shaping to cut, having faced 294 balls, hit 25 fours and a six in a highly impressive innings spanning six hours, 38 minutes spread over three days.It was his team’s second double-hundred of this season following Azhar Ali’s 235 against Leicestershire in May and the highest score by a Worcestershire batter against Sussex, beating Graeme Hick’s 186 at Hove in 1991. The declaration came when Ashraf had D’Oliveira, whose 43 off 38 balls included two sixes, was caught behind for 43.
Former South Africa captain says CSA’s new T20 league will bring an investment that their game desperately needs

Test cricket could be played by only five or six countries with competitive teams in the future, according to former South Africa captain Graeme Smith. Speaking on on day three of the first Test between South Africa and England at Lord’s, Smith, who is now Cricket South Africa’s T20 league commissioner, said he didn’t think South Africa “have any intent to not play Test cricket,” but that the format appears destined to shrink overall.”With Test cricket, it’s just iconic nations or the big cricketing nations that are contributing to Test cricket at the moment,” Smith said. “I think it’s fantastic especially under Virat Kohli that India really took Test cricket seriously. They lead the way with that. But as long as we’ve got competitive teams, you’re not going to have 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 competitive teams. You might only be down to five or six nations that play Test cricket at this level.”Smith’s comments came on the back of the ICC’s new FTP, according to which South Africa play fewer Tests in the next cycle (2023-2027) than the current one (2019-2023) and no three-Test series in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship (WTC).CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki explained that their calendar was constrained by their new T20 league and the financial implications of hosting Test cricket but understood there would be disappointment with their sparse fixture list. The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) were among the first to voice their frustration.”We are disappointed with the lack of Test cricket. For youngsters, it’s the optimum test of your cricket ability,” Andrew Breetze, SACA CEO told ESPNcricinfo. “With fewer Tests being played and more two-Test series, Test cricket is being diluted. If you look at what FICA and SACA have been saying for the last five years, we said that the ICC should take ownership of this by looking at how we balance bilateral cricket with T20 events and if they don’t do that we are going to see Test cricket being diminished by the non-big three. We are there. And that’s disappointing.”Related

CSA forfeits Australia ODIs to secure 'long-term sustainability of the game' in South Africa
Despite that, SACA and its members (South African domestic and international players) will throw their weight behind the new T20 league as they recognise the pivotal role it will play in keeping South African cricket sustainable. “We support the league. The league is critical for the survival of cricket in South Africa,” Breetzke said. “We’ve got three sources of revenue for cricket in South Africa – broadcast revenue, sponsorship and ICC revenue. Two of those are reducing, and because of that, we’ve got to find a source of revenue and that is the T20 league.”Broadcast revenue and sponsorships are the two streams that are shrinking, partly because of the state of the global game and economy and partly because of CSA’s recent administrative meltdown. “If you are not playing India enough, your broadcast revenue is down,” Breetzke said. “Sponsorship revenue is two-fold because we’re not playing as much and because of the last five years at CSA. No-one wants to get involved in our cricket and that’s the sad reality. There is a lot of work for CSA – and to give them credit they are doing it – to enhance the work of CSA and to get sponsors. That’s more critical than ever. The market has changed post Covid. You are not getting those 18-million-rand-a-year Standard Bank sponsorships. The market is more about short-term sponsorship deals, smaller sponsorship and more specific sponsorship. That’s where CSA have to up their game.”Graeme Smith: ‘I don’t think world cricket can afford South Africa or any one of the top nations to start fading away’•BCCI
The six teams in CSA’s new league have all been bought by IPL owners, a development that will inject unprecedented amounts of money into the country’s game. “It’s certainly going to be an investment into our game that South African cricket desperately needed,” Smith said. “The pressures on nations like New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa to stay financially sustainable to keep up with England, India, and the world game to stay competitive is hugely important. I don’t think world cricket can afford South Africa or any one of the top nations to start fading away.”Asked whether he thought there were any dangers to private ownership, Smith said he did not see any drawbacks. “Cricket South Africa is still the major shareholder in this league. The investment into the South African game is still going to happen. It’s not people coming in and taking cricket away from the federation. A big part of this private ownership is that these owners had to look at the grassroots programmes, development programmes and how they would impact that. Hopefully we’ll see a talent pool would really get stronger and stronger and benefit cricket across the board. We needed partners that were sustainable. They’re not looking to make a dollar early on, they were prepared to invest in South Africa and grow this opportunity with us. And I think the key difference for us is that the money will still flow back into the game.”Given all the promises of the new league, CSA has been willing to move other commitments aside, including future Test engagements and forfeiting World Cup Super League matches in Australia next January. Smith said it was a necessary sacrifice, which was actually a lot smaller than it may seem. “For four weeks of an entire year, the priority will be the league. I feel that if we hadn’t done this South African cricket could have probably lost eight to ten players to this UAE league,” he said. “People also look at those three ODIs wrong. Yes, South Africa hasn’t handled ODI cricket as well and it should never be in this position. But for South Africa to be in Australia out of their key part of the summer financially is a huge stress for them. It’s like asking England not to play during your summer. The commitment that South African cricket made to go for the three Test matches is good for the game. It’s something that won’t happen often.”South Africa will not travel to Australia for Tests at all in the next FTP, and overall they also play fewer ODIs than any of the other Full Members, and the third-lowest number of bilateral matches in total after Ireland and Zimbabwe. That number may increase after ongoing discussions with other members.Moseki said CSA were looking at ways to organise more ODIs before the 2027 World Cup but SACA hoped additional fixtures can also be secured before then. “It’s placed CSA in a position where they have to go out and negotiate additional white-ball matches,” Breetzke said. “If you look at that FTP and you look at areas there, there’s a negotiation for additional matches. Relationships are going to be critically important as to can we enhance that FTP with white-ball cricket.”

da stake casino: During the 2022/23 January transfer window, Chelsea spent a whopping £273m on seven new faces, while João Félix arrived on a six-month loan deal, costing around £9.1m.

The 23-year-old has since gone on to make 71 appearances for the Blues so far, scoring seven goals, providing six assists, and totalling 5,624 minutes.

Perhaps considered the biggest bargain of these deals, was the acquisition of Malo Gusto from Lyon, who has gone on to make 45 appearances for the club already – often in the place of the injury-prone Reece James – providing ten assists.
Alongside Gusto, Noni Madueke has begun to have a huge impact for Chelsea in the past few months, making his fee look a real bargain too. The 22-year-old has made 55 appearances for the Blues, netting 14 times, setting up teammates three times, and playing 2,891 minutes of football.
But Madueke could be in for some extra competition, as Chelsea are assessing some more forward options ahead of the January transfer window, including one exciting “difference-maker” as labelled by notable scout Jacek Kulig.
Chelsea looking at signing new winger
According to reports from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are among the interested clubs in Dortmund sensation, Jamie Gittens, who is also of interest to London rivals, Tottenham.
The report states he could cost as much as €100million (£83m) after his excellent start to this campaign.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
The 20-year-old English winger has made 11 appearances for the German side so far this season, scoring five goals already (including three in the Champions League), and providing three assists in just 559 minutes played.
He starred for the German giants on the continental stage most of all, including scoring against Real Madrid to send BVB 2-0 up before the inevitable happened, a victory for the Spanish out on Tuesday evening.
If Gittens was to join Chelsea, he would be up against the likes of Madueke, Pedro Neto, Mykahailo Mudryk, and Jadon Sancho, as the wide man can play on both the left and right wing.
How Gittens compares to Madueke
The English winger has made all 11 of his appearances from the left-wing this season, so his direct competition for the Blues would be the likes of Sancho and Mudryk.
However, we have seen Enzo Maresca playing Neto on the left too, and he clearly is willing to play his wide men on either side, if they are capable, something that Gittens is.
So, how does he compare to some of the club’s best assets? Well, in a host of areas – chiefly goals and assists per 90 – the Dortmund sensation comes out on top.

Madueke and Gittens do have similar play styles, though, being on the more direct side, looking to have a higher shot volume, generating xG by attacking the box, and getting themselves on the scoresheet. Sancho, on the other hand, is a creator, excelling in passing metrics, and creating for others, averaging 0.79 assists per 90, and 4.12 shot-creating actions per 90.
Despite Gittens and Madueke playing on opposite sides, it would be likely that Maresca only plays one of the two, depending on the fixture, as they will both offer similar traits to the side. This could see the potential 2025 signing on the left, with Neto on the right, who can bring the creativity from out wide that is lost when Sancho isn’t playing.
Having Gittens and Neto, plus Sancho and Madueke as your two winger pairings would be elite squad depth. The main question would then become, what happens to Mudryk, and that would be at the forefront of the directors’ minds when making a decision on whether to sign the Dortmund superstar for such a big fee.

Nicholas Pooran’s team was 53 for 1 in a chase of 161, but went on to lose seven wickets for 26 runs

Takeaways: Is batting first the way to go at the T20 World Cup?
Two-time T20 World Cup champions West Indies were stunned by Scotland in their opening match of Group B in Hobart. With the bat, opener George Munsey scored 66 off 53 to hold Scotland’s innings together to help them post 160. With the ball, Scotland relied on their slower bowlers to rock West Indies to 118 all out and consign them to a 42-run defeat. It is the second time in two days that a Full-Member side has gone down to an Associate nation, with Namibia beating Sri Lanka on opening day.West Indies started their chase strongly and were 53 for 1 in 5.4 overs, but then lost their next seven wickets for 26 runs, with left-arm spinner Mark Watt producing a penetrative and economical spell to finish with 3 for 12 in his four overs. Offspinner Michael Leask also put in a stranglehold with the wickets of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell, while right-arm seamer Brad Wheal got crucial breakthroughs at the top and then in his return spell. The loss puts West Indies under pressure with matches against Ireland and Zimbabwe next on their docket. Scotland, meanwhile, will be looking to build on this comprehensive win and will eye a second consecutive Super 12 spot at the T20 World Cup.Watt, Leask open West Indies’ woundsThe pitch wasn’t particularly difficult to bat on, and many of West Indies’ key batters fell looking to play their shots in a chase of 161. Kyle Mayers was the first to go, caught at deep midwicket going for a big hit even though he had just slammed a four and a six. Evin Lewis and Brandon King stayed positive through the rest of the powerplay, but Lewis perished after his pull found the only fielder on the leg side boundary.By now the skies were turning grey. Watt, who opened the bowling, came back after the powerplay. But a sizeable part of his focus – and the captain Richie Berrington’s – was on the DLS sheet. At that point, Scotland were marginally behind, but the tables turned when King was bowled trying to cut Watt off the back foot. With Scotland now slightly ahead of the DLS, it was West Indies who were trying to force the play, and in the process hurt their own game since rain never arrived in the second innings.Leask, from around the stumps, had Pooran bowled for 5 after he missed a pull shot. Powell soon followed, holing to long-on. And Shamarh Brooks was caught trying to heave a back-of-a-length delivery to the only boundary rider on the leg side to leave West Indies reeling at 77 for 6 after 12 overs.Brad Wheal had Shamarh Brooks caught•ICC via Getty Images
Akeal Hosein was then run out after a mix-up. Watt induced a nick from Alzarri Joseph for a first-ball duck to bring West Indies down to 79 for 8, and from there on, the result appeared to be a formality.Jason Holder at No. 7 did save some face for West Indies with his 33-ball 38 to take the team’s total past 100. He was the last man to depart in the 19th over, caught at long-off by Chris Greaves, prompting a sedate and composed celebration from the victorious Scotland side.Munsey holds Scotland’s fortScotland were asked to bat by Pooran at the toss. The West Indies captain said he wanted first use of the moisture on a fresh surface only to then toss the new ball to medium-pacer Mayers and left-arm spinner Hosein.Munsey and his opening partner Michael Jones took full toll, racing away to a wicketless 52 runs in 5.3 overs before rain stopped play for 45 minutes. Munsey, in particular, took on Mayers and Joseph in the early salvo, using his wrists to pepper the leg side with fours or leaning in to drive through the covers. However, a combination of a revamped bowling strategy, along with a sluggish post-rain outfield, slowed Scotland down. Holder got the first wicket just after the powerplay and made it two in his next over with Matthew Cross’ scalp. From the other end, Hosein and Joseph recovered from their opening spells with the latter removing Riche Berrington for 16.The set batter Munsey was struggling to find the boundaries with the field spread out, and Scotland appeared to be losing their momentum, but Calum MacLeod injected some pizzazz with four fours in his 14-ball cameo of 23. At the other end, Munsey slow-burned his way to fifty in 43 balls in the 17th over.At that time, Scotland looked set for a sub-150 score, a sharp decline from the position they were in after the powerplay. But they got a timely boost, with two big overs right at the end. The 18th over from Obed McCoy went for 12 runs and the 20th from Odean Smith cost 15 allowing them to post what turned out to be a more than match-winning total. Munsey contributed three of the five fours Scotland hit in those 12 balls, making what was comfortably the highest score of the match and even picking up an award for it.
