Sussex 220 and 39 for 1 trail Worcestershire 438 for 5 (Libby 215) lead by 179 runsOpener Jake Libby made a career-best 215 as Worcestershire put themselves in position to push for victory over Sussex and keep their promotion hopes alive in the LV= Insurance County Championship. Libby’s maiden double-century came in a total of 438 for 5 before Worcestershire declared with a lead of 218 on day three at the 1st Central County Ground, having banked maximum bonus points.Play didn’t start at Hove until 4.10pm because of rain and 84 overs have been lost in the match so far but Worcestershire quickly made up for lost time, Libby leading the charge as they thrashed 149 in 20 overs against some toothless bowling before the declaration.Sussex were left with ten overs to negotiate, and they lost skipper Tom Haines for 13 in the penultimate over when he played on to Joe Leach. They closed on 39 for 1, still 179 behind.Sussex had taken the new ball when play eventually began after heavy rain but it was soon being dispatched to all parts by Libby and Jack Haynes. Pakistan allrounder Faheem Ashraf came in for some harsh treatment, his three overs costing 30 runs including three successive boundaries by Libby which took him past his previous best score of 184.He added 96 in 22 overs with Haynes, who played on to Brad Currie for 31, but skipper Brett D’Oliveira kept up the momentum when he joined Libby. D’Oliveira offered a difficult chance off a top-edged pull but Ali Orr, running round the boundary, couldn’t quite hold on as he stepped over the rope. Otherwise, the pair scored at more than seven runs an over even though Sussex had seven fielders on the boundary.Libby brought up his 200 with a single off James Coles and offered his first chance on 204, but wicketkeeper Oli Carter spilled a straightforward opportunity moving to his right. Libby was eventually dismissed by Coles shaping to cut, having faced 294 balls, hit 25 fours and a six in a highly impressive innings spanning six hours, 38 minutes spread over three days.It was his team’s second double-hundred of this season following Azhar Ali’s 235 against Leicestershire in May and the highest score by a Worcestershire batter against Sussex, beating Graeme Hick’s 186 at Hove in 1991. The declaration came when Ashraf had D’Oliveira, whose 43 off 38 balls included two sixes, was caught behind for 43.

Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner propel Australia to series victory

India put up a fight thanks to some big hitting from Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh, but a chase of 189 proved just beyond them

If her swashbuckling 47-ball 75 on Wednesday wasn’t proof enough that she is well and truly back, Ellyse Perry kicked it up a notch with a classy 72 not out as Australia beat India by seven runs and took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match T20I series being played in Mumbai. This, despite a late flourish from Richa Ghosh, who caused a few flutters in the Australia camp in the end. After losing Alyssa Healy to a calf injury and Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath falling cheaply, Australia seemed to be losing their way in the first half of their innings, managing only 73 in their first 11 overs. However, Perry, supported in equal measure by Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Harris, changed all that and Australia went to the break 188 for 3, their last nine overs yielding an incredible 115 runs.Related

India then lost wickets at regular intervals to slip in the chase. However, Harmanpreet Kaur and later Richa provided the hosts with a semblance of chance. Needing 38 to win off the last two overs, Richa smashed two sixes and a four to get the equation down to 20 off six. Deepti Sharma hit a couple more fours, but 189 was too steep a mountain to climb. An injury and two strikes
The final total notwithstanding, Australia seemed to be in a spot of bother mid-way through their innings. While Healy started in fifth gear, Mooney struggled with her timing. She only managed a mere 2 off 8 balls before mis-hitting Deepti to mid-on. Healy though remained unfussed. She struck six fours in her 21-ball 30, and just when it seemed to be her night, she sprained her calf muscle and had to retire hurt at the end of the sixth over. McGrath fell soon after and despite Perry smashing the first ball she faced for a six, the India bowlers seemed to be all over the visitors. Australia only managed three boundaries between the seventh and the 11th over, and faced 29 dot balls in the first 11 overs with the run rate less than seven.Perry, Gardner and Harris run riot
Soon enough, Australia realised they needed a bit of impetus, and they got it through a Renuka Singh over. Tied down by spin, a change to pace brought about a change in the scoring rate. Perry and Gardner smashed Renuka for three fours in the 12th over, and there was no turning back. Australia collected a boundary at least once every over thereon, with only the 17th going for less than 10 runs.Perry and Gardner added 94 runs off 59 balls for the third wicket. Gardner fell for a 27-ball 42 and her departure summoned even more power in the middle. Harris continued her stellar form smashing four fours and a six in her 12-ball 27 not out. Perry was equally adept in finding the ropes, her innings laced with seven fours and four sixes. Australia tonked 66 runs in the last five overs to reach a more-than-par total.Gardner weaves her magic; Richa makes Australia sweat
If India had any shot of overhauling the target, they needed Smriti Mandhana to get going. She started the chase with a four first ball and hit two more in her next five balls as India raced to 21 in the first two overs. McGrath, standing in as captain for the injured Healy, then turned to who else but Gardner. And, the offspinner did not disappoint. She got one to dip and turn on Mandhana outside off, who could only edge it behind to Mooney. Later, she returned to get rid of set Devika Vaidya to finish with excellent figures of 2 for 20.Australia picked up wickets regularly all through. Shafali Verma fell for 20, while Jemimah Rodrigues came and went. Harmanpreet did smoke a few lusty blows during her 30-ball 46, adding 72 runs with Vaidya for the fourth wicket, but once she fell, the target seemed a fair distance away. Richa did manage to make it interesting, though. The 19-year-old walking in with the asking rate in excess of 11, smashed her first two balls for fours. She had a slice of luck when McGrath dropped her on 17, and went about finding the ropes for fun. However, her unbeaten 19-ball 40 proved insufficient on the day.

O goleiro afirmou que está focado em seu trabalho e que busca ganhar títulos pelo Tricolor paulista. Para ele, resultados positivos são essenciais para reverter este quadro de desconfiança dos torcedores.

– Venho trabalhando, me dedicando para entregar o melhor.

Todas as derrotas doem.

'More about enjoyment than anything else' – Usman Khawaja savours Karachi homecoming

“This is where the Khawajas are from. This is my home”, he said after a century in the country of his birth

Andrew McGlashan12-Mar-2022He wasn’t going to miss out this time. With a nudge into the leg side, Usman Khawaja ran through for his 100th run. Another Test hundred, but not just any Test hundred.Having fallen three runs short of the milestone in Rawalpindi – near the city of his birth Islamabad – a few days ago, the celebrations could come in the city that his family hails from. He had four relatives in the stands in Karachi after all.”This is where the Khawajas are from. This is my home,” he told the host broadcaster. “Would have been nice to get a hundred both [ in Rawalpindi] and here, but I’ll take this one.”Related

Ashraf gives Pakistan an opening, but floodgates stay shut

Not for the first time in the series, cries of “Khawaja, Khawaja” rang around the stadium. “The fans have been great, they’ve been so supportive, I couldn’t ask for more,” he said. “I love it because you can tell they want Pakistan to win…but you can also tell they are very supportive of me.”This has been an extraordinary comeback to Test cricket which has now brought three centuries in six innings along with a 97. If ever there was a sliding-doors moment, it was Travis Head’s positive Covid-19 result before the Sydney Test which created the spot for Khawaja’s return.”It does feel right now like things are going pretty nicely, but I know the game can change pretty quickly,” he said. “I’m just enjoying the journey. I’m at a point in my career where it’s more about enjoyment than anything else. Nothing lasts forever; I understand that.”This was another supremely crafted century. It began at a reasonably high tempo as he and David Warner played aggressively against the new ball. Khawaja was on 34 off 44 balls at the first drinks break and brought up his fifty from 69 deliveries, but then reined things in with the double loss of Warner and Marnus Labuschagne. The next fifty runs would take 124 deliveries as the ball softened and Babar Azam became increasingly defensive with his tactics. When Warner was dismissed, Australia were 82 for 1 off 18 overs with the remaining 72 overs bringing 169 runs and just another 79 in a 36-over final session. However, Khawaja said they were determined not to give Pakistan anything as they tried to stop the scoreboard, having had batters fall to the leg-stump line in Rawalpindi.A batter would hope to fill their boots in conditions that have been presented across the first six days of this series – Labuschagne’s face after being run out for a duck showed the feeling of missing out – but after none of Australia’s top order could convert in the opening Test, it was important the first player with an opportunity to do so here took advantage.Unbeaten on 127 at the close, Khawaja will be eying a huge score after the loss of Steven Smith late on the first day – his wait for a century goes on after Faheem Ashraf’s spectacular slip catch – meaning Pakistan do have an opening at a middle order that remains inexperienced in these conditions. There were a few hints that this pitch may break up as the game progresses, and Khawaja expected that it would. Nauman Ali got one to spin sharply past Smith’s edge to bring a nod of approval, and Sajid Khan, during a largely disappointing display, made one grip which took a leading edge from Khawaja but landed safely. As predicted before the game, it also appeared reverse swing would be more of a factor in this contest. The most compelling passage of the opening day was when Shaheen Shah Afridi, in a spell of 4-4-0-0, and Ashraf got the ball to move before tea. And neither of them bowled again until the second new ball was taken.”It was reversing pretty big in that middle session, and just got really hard to score,” Khawaja said. “We just had to grind. Me and Smithy knew that. If we saw an opportunity to score we were looking for it, but we weren’t presented with many. They bowled well in the middle session, and then [in] that last session, the spinners went a little bit negative to the leg side.”Australia will want to go very big in this first innings – Khawaja spoke of 500 – not least because it will help debutant legspinner Mitchell Swepson to operate without too much concern of runs conceded. Khawaja’s day had started with a heartfelt speech as he presented Swepson, who he captains for Queensland, with his baggy green. He recalled being in the Australia dressing room on Swepson’s first tour in 2017 and thinking it would not be long before he played a Test only for it to eventually take five years. For Khawaja though, the opportunity to play in the country of his birth has been a much longer wait and for some time appeared may never happen. Instead, the homecoming is complete.

Indian Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has opted out of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy squad for “personal reasons”. A Cricket Association of Bengal official confirmed this development to ESPNcricinfo but did not elaborate on what the exact reason might be.It could not be verified whether the Indian selectors or team management have had a word with Saha recently about his future and whether that prompted the 37-year old to skip the league phase of Ranji. With Rishabh Pant firmly in place as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper, Saha has been the back-up in India’s Test squads. However, given his age, and KS Bharat exhibiting excellent glove-work when he came on as a substitute during India’s home Test series against New Zealand in November-December 2021, the selectors have two keepers in their 20s to call on. Bharat, who is 28, has been a regular with India A for the past few years.Related

Liverpool chiefs determined to sign "superb" £167k-p/w star if Salah leaves

da bwin: Whilst Arne Slot’s reign has got off to a fine start, concerns over Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future has reportedly seen the Reds turn towards one of the most exciting wingers in European football.

Liverpool transfer news

da bwin: The Reds have barely skipped a beat under their new manager, but that’s not to say it was an easy summer in the build-up to Slot’s first campaign in charge. Those at Anfield left their business late and failed to sign a defensive midfielder for the second consecutive summer after Martin Zubimendi reportedly turned down the chance to complete a move in favour of staying loyal to boyhood club Real Sociedad.

Worth as much as Alisson: Liverpool star's value has risen 261% since exit

He’s been the cause of defeat for the Reds since leaving…

1 ByAngus Sinclair Sep 27, 2024

Whilst Ryan Gravenberch has since emerged to take that role with both hands and arguably make a claim to be Liverpool’s player of the season so far, other problems are beginning to mount on Merseyside. As things stand, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Despite all three players’ contracts coming to an end and none of the trio suggesting that they would like to leave, fresh offers are yet to be confirmed, as Salah revealed when speaking about his situation after the Reds beat Manchester United earlier this season.

However, in the event of the Egyptian’s exit, it seems as though those at Anfield have a plan in place. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool chiefs are now determined to sign Nico Williams if Salah does leave next summer.

The Athletic Bilbao winger, who has also reportedly attracted the attention of Manchester United and Barcelona, is one of the best wingers in European football, as highlighted by his recent role in Span’s Euro 2024 triumph.

"Superb" Williams one of few who could replace Salah

Replacing Salah is a near-impossible job, that much is clear. The Anfield legend may even go down as the greatest winger that the Premier League has ever seen, having picked up three Golden Boots and won everything there is to win in English football during his time at Liverpool. So when he does leave, be that next summer or in years to come, Liverpool have the toughest of tasks on their hands. But that’s when Williams could come in.

nico-williams-athletic-bilbao

A player yet to reach his peak, the £167,000-a-week star is already proving himself on the biggest stage, having scored the opening goal against England as Spain set course for Euro 2024 victory a few months ago. Praised for his “superb” performance against Barcelona earlier this year by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, Willams is arguably one of the few who are talented enough to fill Liverpool’s eventual Salah void.

After scoring eight goals and recording a staggering 19 assists last season, it is clear that Williams is destined for the top, which could yet feature a move to Anfield to replace Salah.
