Shubman Gill: Akash bowled with so much heart

India captain Shubman Gill has hailed the performance of his fast bowlers after India bounced back from the opening defeat at Headingley to level the series at Edgbaston. Akash Deep, who had replaced Jasprit Bumrah, led the way with his maiden ten-wicket haul in his eighth Test, including 6 for 99 in the final innings. Akash was ably backed up by Mohammed Siraj, who had picked up a six-for in England’s first innings, and Prasidh Krishna.”They [the bowlers] were magnificent,” Gill said at the post-match presentation. “I think the way we were able to get through the top order, that was very important for us. Both those bowlers bowled brilliantly. Even Prasidh, I felt, he didn’t get as many wickets as them, but he also bowled very brilliantly.”I think he [Akash Deep] bowled with so much heart and the areas and the lengths that he hit, he was just getting the ball to move both ways. On wickets like these, it’s very difficult to get the ball moving in both directions and he was able to do that. He was just magnificent for us.”Gill confirmed the return of bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the third Test, which begins at Lord’s on July 10. Bumrah was rested for the Edgbaston Test, meaning he will play two of the three remaining fixtures in the series.”Definitely (when asked about Bumrah). Very excited for that [playing at Lord’s],” Gill said. “Probably the most iconic cricket stadium in the world. And as a kid, everyone dreams about playing there. And I think no bigger honour than to be able to captain your country and lead the team there.”Gill delivered a glowing appraisal of India’s fast-bowling depth. “When two of your fast bowlers take 16-17 wickets, the captaincy becomes very easy,” Gill told the host broadcaster. “When two fast bowlers are in such good form… Bumrah was not playing in this match, but I think there is so much talent in India that the squad we have of 16-17 players, they have India’s best bowlers. And from them, any bowling attack can take 20 wickets in any situation or conditions.”Gill was pleased with his own form: he racked up scores of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston. His aggregate of 430 was the second highest in a Test match behind Graham Gooch’s 456 against India in 1990. Gill also became the second batter to make two 150-plus scores in a Test.”I’d say I’m feeling comfortable [with my batting],” Gill said. “I’m definitely feeling comfortable with my game and hopefully with my contribution, if we are able to win this series, that would be a great achievement for us.”

Rangers expected to sign new versatile defender in late deadline day deal

After yet another draw in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers are now expected to sign a defensive reinforcement in a last-gasp deadline day deal for Russell Martin.

Rangers set for busy deadline day

Without a win in their first four Scottish Premiership games under Russell Martin after their latest draw against Old Firm rivals Celtic, Rangers are in desperate need of last-minute additions.

Imagine him & Miovski: Rangers make last-gasp offer for "devastating" star

Rangers have reportedly made a last-gasp offer to sign a star who could shine alongside Bojan Miovski.

ByDan Emery Sep 1, 2025

The Gers have had a nightmare few weeks under the former Southampton boss, from crashing out of the Champions League to then losing star man Hamza Igamane, but could yet enjoy a turning point if they get deadline day right.

The manager himself, meanwhile, once again chose to remain optimistic after his side’s 0-0 draw against rivals Celtic in what was a poor game between two sides that haven’t been at their true best as of yet this season.

Martin is adamant that the 49ers still have faith in his project and that could once again be showcased in the transfer market. With the hours ticking away on deadline day, the American owners are still reportedly eyeing some last-minute deals.

The likes of Youssef Chermiti, for example, are still on Rangers’ radar whilst another deal for a much-needed defensive reinforcement is expected to reach completion.

Rangers expected to sign Cornelius

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are now expected to sign Derek Cornelius from Marseille in a last-minute loan deal. The central defender, who can also play as a left-back, should offer Martin some welcome cover in both areas and potentially the addition that finally helps his side back to winning ways.

As highlighted by the Rangers Journal, Cornelius is particularly one to watch in possession and that should suit Martin’s style of play far more than his current options.

The Marseille man particularly stands out for his progressive passing ability, which is something Rangers have arguably lacked. As much as he is a defensive addition, having a defender who is capable of ending an opposition’s press with one line-breaking pass can quickly turn defence into attack in rapid fashion.

Derek Cornelius

Meanwhile, at 27 years old, Cornelius is not an inexperienced option like Rangers have already signed this summer. He should be able to hit the ground running from the off at Ibrox.

Gareth Southgate is the 'perfect' manager to replace Ruben Amorim as Man Utd told to appoint ex-England boss

Amidst increasing pressure surrounding Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils have been told by a former Premier League star that former England boss Gareth Southgate is the ideal man to take over at Old Trafford and bring a good feeling back to the club. Southgate had previously been linked with the role before Amorim took over, a decision which has not quite gone to plan thus far.

  • Southgate could be perfect man for United – Joe Cole

According to former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole, Southgate could be the “perfect” man to take over at Old Trafford if Amorim were to lose his job over the coming months. Cole cited building a new culture and understanding the club and its demands as key aspects in which the former England manager may have excelled more than Amorim.

This comes in a context where the Red Devils have yet to win consecutive Premier League games under Amorim, a disappointing defeat to struggling Brentford undoing the good work from a 2-1 win over Chelsea last time out.

Amidst speculation that Amorim may find himself and his job under pressure if things do not improve soon, Southgate has reportedly been added to a three-man shortlist to replace the Portuguese if the United job becomes available once again.

Could Southgate turn Man United's club culture for the better?

Southgate was not short of criticism during his time as England manager, arguably the only job in English football which comes under more scrutiny than that of the Manchester United boss. On one level, therefore, he should have little issue dealing with the pressure.

Southgate was also credited with bringing back a positive culture to the England dressing room, destroying the ‘cliques’ which had been present under previous managers and forming a fearless, young side which was capable not only of going far into tournaments, but of winning high-pressure penalty shoot-outs.

Arguably the biggest issue surrounding United in recent years has been the culture. Bad eggs within the dressing room, public fallouts between managers and players, multiple star names seeing their careers go off the rails and, most recently, Amorim’s infamous ‘bomb squad’. The likes of Cole believe that Southgate could be the right man to turn these problems around. Some United fans disagree, though, and have expressed their thoughts on social media.

  • Cole believes Southgate could succeed at Old Trafford

Cole said: “He [Amorim] was the bright young spark, people were talking about him like he was the messiah coming into Manchester United and would sort everything out. That’s how high his stock was when he left Lisbon.

“So, he’s clearly a good manager as well, but the mix and the blend of the whole situation, I think it needs a culture change. I thought Gareth Southgate was the perfect man for the job at the state it was in terms of building culture, understanding the club, understanding the league, understanding the players, working with Jim Ratcliffe and people like that, and they went with Amorim, and it doesn’t look like it’s working.”

Pressure on Amorim will increase unless results improve

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Man United board have clearly put a lot of faith in Amorim, even putting the Portuguese’s judgement first in allowing talented players such as Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to leave. Kobbie Mainoo could be next.

It would therefore be a major turn of events if Amorim were to lose his job soon. With his continued insistence on using a formation which does not suit his players, though, frustrations within the club could soon reach boiling point.

Should the Red Devils find themselves in the bottom half of the table as we approach the winter period, serious questions will need to be asked. Until then, we may be left continuing to wonder how long Amorim will play Bruno Fernandes in the midfield pivot before he realises the Portuguese is simply not suited to the deeper-lying role.

Southgate and Manchester United may appear an unlikely match but if things continue as they are, the opinion of Cole may become less of a controversial one. It will be intriguing to see which path Amorim’s Red Devils take next.

No T20 experience? No problem for MI's Vignesh Puthur, who stood out on his IPL debut

MI coach Paras Mhambrey on how Puthur, the left-arm wristpinner who bagged 3 for 32 against CSK, impressed the scouting team

Alagappan Muthu24-Mar-20251:26

‘A breath of fresh air’ – Varun Aaron on Vignesh Puthur

Left-arm wristspinners had all the fun in Chennai’s first game of IPL 2025. The younger but rather more well-known Noor Ahmad picked up 4 for 18 from four overs but he was almost matched by a complete unknown. Vignesh Puthur is a 24-year-old from Kerala who had never played a T20 game at senior level but he was able to knock off Ruturaj Gaikwad when he was well past fifty, Shivam Dube who smashes spin for fun and Deepak Hooda. For a short time, Mumbai Indians looked like they might be able to defend 155. But it wasn’t to be.Paras Mhambrey, MI’s bowling coach, explained what went behind the scenes that resulted in Puthur making his IPL debut and doing so well. “I think the idea at MI is always seeing the potential more than anything else,” he said. “And when we saw him for one of our trials, we saw the potential in him rather than looking into how much cricket he has played in the past.”He spins the ball pretty consistently. Lands the ball on pretty much what [where] we wanted. Is pretty accurate with it. I think those are the tick marks that we look into but not only that. But it’s just the fact that he is different. Spins the ball, has a googly. That kind of stuff. So you know he will be able to trouble quality batters with the skills that he has.”Related

Noor Ahmad's wristspin is art in fast forward

Puthur came in as Impact Player in the second innings and began his spell outside the powerplay. By then, Chennai Super Kings had got more than one-third of the runs they needed on the night and Ruturaj was the source of almost all their acceleration. Puthur tossed one up. Ruturaj took up the challenge. He tried to clear the straight boundary but couldn’t. Dube and Hooda also tried to hit Puthur out of the park in his next two overs but they weren’t able to pull it off either. All of those balls were there to be hit but perhaps a lack of pace prevented the batters from getting the timing they were looking for. Puthar has been doing the same thing against Mumbai’s own batters as well.”I think when Rohit [Sharma] and Surya[kumar Yadav] and Tilak [Varma], all these guys batted against him, they felt it wasn’t that easy,” Mhambrey said. “So [that was] one of the reasons we felt we had the confidence of pushing him in this game.Vignesh Puthur is mobbed by his team-mates•AFP/Getty Images”Never easy, first game against CSK, it’s a big game. But purely the way he responded, hats off to him. I think he was able to hold his nerves and handle pressure superbly. I think really got us in the game. Very happy about his performance.”Puthur attended trials for MI ahead of the IPL auction in November. They bought him for INR 30 lakh. He was then taken to South Africa where he worked as a net bowler for MI Cape Town and that helped fast-track his development because he was around quality players and he did everything he could to learn off them.”The need of the hour [for Puthur’s growth as a player], it’s more about the conversations,” Mhambrey said. “Not purely on the skill work so much really. I think that he is pretty much sorted out there I felt. But more about the conversations that he had. An opportunity with MJ [Mahela Jayawardene] or [Kieron] Pollard. Or the batters especially. Surya or Rohit.”You never get an opportunity to have that conversation. So I think it’s more about him having a chat with everyone. And as I said, he’s a sweet kid. Great team man, good person to have in the team. He’s like a sponge, he’s just listening. He has got [nervous] sometimes because you have heroes, you see them playing on the TV, and all of a sudden, you’re sharing that dressing room with them, sitting next to someone like Rohit, it’s a dream come true for a lot of these guys, right?”But purely for the fact that the way he responded [in the game against CSK] never looked like he was under pressure from the very first ball. And that was good to see, I think. It’s just the way he handled pressure.”

'We take tremendous pride' – Nashville and Austin both enter the U.S. Open Cup final eager to claim first trophy, make history

Both U.S. Open Cup finalists are relatively recent MLS additions, and both have a chance to claim their first trophy

If you'd watched 118 minutes of Austin FC's U.S. Open Cup semifinal clash with Minnesota United, you wouldn't have thought that the latter team would be playing in the final. Austin weren't battered, but they were never quite in it. The home side, despite taking the lead in the first half were pegged back, minute by minute.

Every logical indicator of the way soccer works suggested that there wouldn't be an Austin winner here. So much for that.

Sometimes this sport churns up surprises. And that's what Austin provided – in emphatic style. CJ Fodrey made it happen: a loose ball, a sliced volley, Dayne St. Clair, among the favorites for MLS goalie of the year, watching from the turf as it rolled in. It wasn't a smash and grab. But it did turn what seemed to be a penalty shootout here, not a late Austin winner.

But Fodrey scored all the same. And Austin will play for the cup at home on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Q2 Stadium. Nashville, meanwhile, were a little more comfortable. They leaned on their main man, Sam Surridge, and defended at the right moments. Philadelphia had more of the ball in their semifinal, but Nashville always seemed set to win this thing.

And so we have a finely poised U.S. Open Cup final. And whichever club wins will claim the first title in franchise history. These are two cities that love their sports, recently added to MLS, with a chance to claim a trophy and kick off a sense of league legitimacy in full.

ImagnThe Austin FC perspective

Nico Estevez admitted it "meant a lot." He praised his team for "playing through the ups and downs."

And he is right. Austin FC are comfortable in MLS. This is Estevez's first season in the job, and he has moved the franchise from playoff outsiders into a bonafide postseason team. They're in sixth in the Western Conference despite losing Brandon Vazquez – one of the best No. 9s in MLS – to an ACL injury.

It's admittedly hard to ask more of the coach.

More broadly, this is a good year for Austin, the soccer city. Austin hosted MLS's All Star Game in wonderful fashion. This is a city that loves its University of Texas teams, but there is a burgeoning soccer culture – and the ASG helped bring it to the fore (iShowSpeed decided to show up for the skills challenge, which tells you a lot).

The Open Cup, then, would be a tidy accumulation of everything. Here is a good side who have overcome adversity in the right way, a team building towards something. A win would be the first professional sports championship in city history. There's a lot on the line here.

"It means a lot to the not only to the club, not the fan base, the players, the staff, everyone around the team, everyone in the community, everyone that follows the team," Estevez said. "And I know in this particular case, the city of Austin is behind the team. It will mean a lot. It will be something great that we can achieve and something that we are going to work really hard to give to everyone."

AdvertisementGettyThe Nashville perspective

For Nashville, the point of view is a little different. This is a side that has quality throughout, but leans on their stars. Surridge is scoring goals for fun in MLS – and would be top of the Golden Boot race if not for a certain Argentine that plays in Miami.

Here is a ruthlessly efficient No. 9 who goes about it all in a wonderfully carefree way. His stats in the semifinal win over Philadelphia sum it all up: 16 touches, four passes completed, three goals. He told GOAL in July that he had no real clue where Nashville was before he signed for the club in 2023.

He is joined by Hany Mukhtar, that rare breed of creative attacking player that thrive in MLS. Nashville's pitch to Mukhtar was simple: they were starting a franchise, and they wanted him to be their star. Mukhtar said yes. He is now comfortably one of the best talents in the league. On those two alone, you'd probably pick Nashville as favorites.

But they do lack a bit of depth, and are a little cautious in their play. The defense has been leaky of late. They will likely have to take the game to Austin – who have no problem sitting back.

"We've been preparing all season for it. We've had a lot of different situations that have occurred throughout the year, up a goal, down a goal. Being able to draw on all of those experiences will help us," Nashville coach B.J. Callaghan said

Getty Images SportA win for the USOC?

More broadly, this would seem to be a win for the Open Cup, which has been under pressure in recent years. This competition is nearly 125 years old. It remains open to amateur sides – a few of which have gone on to knock off USL clubs in recent iterations of the competition, known as "Cupsets." The club with the most titles is Bethlehem Steel F.C., which folded in 1930.

That history hasn't quite been held up of late.

MLS and U.S. soccer clashed over the involvement of teams, when America's top flight league announced that reserve teams could be sent to the competition. A number of MLS Next Pro clubs joined. LAFC, which won the competition in 2024, didn't elect to defend their crown after qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Fans, especially of long-time MLS clubs and USL sides, have urged their senior sides to continue to participate.

It seems something of a win, then, that both of these clubs are playing in the final. Austin FC played their inaugural season in 2021. Nashville stepped on the field for the first time in 2020. Both have MLS Next Pro teams.

It would be easy, in abstract, for both to send their reserves. Instead, here are their senior sides, playing for a trophy for the first time. There's a certain romanticism to that.

Getty Images SportThe staying power

And perhaps that's the point. If you subscribe to the notion that soccer is, in many ways, about the people who pay to watch it – and those who take it in from home – then this is a real win. Expansion franchises are expensive and don't always have instant  authenticity.

But all clubs have to start from somewhere. History cannot be built on good vibes, big signings, and chipper news conferences alone.

Indeed, pedigree is what matters. And what better way to fully legitimize a side that has never won anything than by bringing in a trophy with tangible value? This competition has been slashed, changed and manipulated. MLS has scheduled the Campeones Cup – a clash between the winners of Liga MX and MLS – on the same night. The Open Cup has retained authenticity, with plenty of history to back it up.

Whichever team wins can point to that fact.

"From the beginning, we said we're gonna take the Open Cup seriously," Callaghan said. "It's something that we believe in here at the club. It's the oldest trophy that you can compete for in the United States. It's a great trophy, meaning that anybody can put together a team and enter this tournament. It's a true national tournament that's open for everybody, and to win it and to be that representative for a year, I think we take tremendous pride in that."

'They saved my career' – Sangha repays South Australia's faith with Shield final heroics

Fans swarmed Karen Rolton Oval to celebrate, in scenes similar to 1996, when South Australia last won the Sheffield Shield

An emotional Jason Sangha said South Australia saved his career after delivering a match-winning unbeaten century to help the state break a 29-year Sheffield Shield drought.Sangha, 25, joined South Australia during the off-season last year having been discarded by New South Wales after six seasons and 37 Shield matches, including one as captain in 2022.The former Australia Under-19 captain had been promoted to Shield cricket very early but struggled for consistency, averaging just 26.63 with three centuries in 64 innings for New South Wales before being dropped in November 2023.Related

But South Australia gave him a lifeline and he has repaid them in stunning fashion. He will go down as a South Australian hero after scoring an unbeaten 126 to help his side chase 270, the highest ever fourth innings run chase in a Shield final. When he hit the winning runs he was mobbed by thousands of fans that ran onto the ground and they chanted his name at the trophy presentation when he received his winners medal.”I thought my career was over,” Sangha said. “South Australia gave me a second chance. I owe them everything, really. They have saved my career.”Sangha finished the season with 704 runs at 78.22 from just six games including three centuries, one in his first game of the season where South Australia beat Tasmania in the equal closest game in Shield history, and one in the last to deliver the title. He performed his heroics in the final alongside Australia Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey who made a sensational 105 in a partnership of 202 after the pair came together at 28 for 3.Carey and Jake Lehmann were the only two players in South Australia’s XI that had played in the state’s last two Shield finals in 2016 and 2017 when they lost twice to Victoria at home and in Alice Springs. He was proud to have finally delivered a title to South Australia.”It has been too long – and the history is what it is,” Carey said. “I didn’t think time was running out but I was just super keen to do everything I can to help us this year.”The scenes in the aftermath of South Australia’s four-wicket win were extraordinary. A crowd in excess of 4000 had turned up at Karen Rolton Oval to watch the fourth day chase. There would not have been a crowd of that size at any Shield game in Australia in recent memory. When Sangha clipped the winning runs through midwicket, the vast majority of the crowd swarmed the field as Sangha and his batting partner Ben Manenti hugged in the middle. The pair got separated as they were each mobbed by fans as they tried to make their way off the ground to celebrate with their team-mates. The scenes were very similar to 1996 when South Australia last won the Shield in Adelaide, as fans swarmed Peter McIntyre and Shane George as they ran from the ground after the pair had held on for a draw. The view from the Karen Rolton Oval grandstand when the Shield trophy was presented•Getty Images

Every Shield final presentation in recent times has taken place on the ground with very few people around. With thousands on the ground in front of the only grandstand at Karen Rolton Oval, which doubles as the pavilion, Cricket Australia and South Australian Cricket Association officials created an impromptu stage in the seats at the front of the first tier.South Australia premier Peter Malinauskas stood in the throng of fans on the ground with his daughter on his shoulders as the crowd looked up to see the Shield presented to skipper Nathan McSweeney. One of the loudest cheers came for Brendan Doggett when he was announced as player of the match. The 31-year-old had already won two Shield titles with Queensland but delivered his finest performance as a Shield cricketer for South Australia taking 11 for 140 for the match, the best ever figures in a final.”I was probably a little bit naive with my first two,” Doggett said. “Just being young and being in a really strong side, I probably didn’t realise how hard they were to win until arriving here.”McSweeney, another former Queenslander, said the drought had weighed heavily on them.”When it has been a long time and you feel a little bit of external pressure as well, it makes it a little bit nicer,” McSweeney said.Coach Ryan Harris, who has delivered both the Shield and the One-Day Cup to South Australia in his first season as coach, said he was hoping the victory was just the beginning.”We’re going to try and win a few now,” Harris said. “We will definitely enjoy this one but I have already started thinking about next year.”
