Bravo calls for 'smarts of the game' as KKR fight batting slump

Ahead of Thursday’s game against SRH, KKR’s mentor has reminded his batters that “cricketing shots are allowed in T20s as well”

Sreshth Shah02-Apr-2025Six 200-plus totals were made in the first five matches of IPL 2025. Four of them exceeded 230, with a highest of 286. But scoring rates have come down since, with no 200-plus scores in the next eight matches. Dwayne Bravo, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor and the IPL’s highest wicket-taker among seamers, said this was a result of batters putting less value on their wickets and bowlers getting smarter.”The batsmen are not having that value on the wicket anymore,” Bravo said on the eve of KKR’s home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). “They’re a bit reckless because they play on those flat pitches. Teams are batting longer with the Impact Player, so the value for batsmanship is no longer there. The Impact Player is there, a lot of teams have batted longer, so the value for batsmanship is no longer there.Related

“So that’s why you see the scores are now starting to drop a bit. Bowlers are getting smarter and they’re trying to use their strengths more.”Bravo’s side KKR, the defending champions, are among the teams who promised to raise run rates this season, but they’ve only made totals of 174 and 116 on the two occasions when they’ve batted first, with their middle order not yet finding form. Their opponents SRH have also promised breakneck run-rates but have lost steam since posting 286, one run short of their own IPL record total, on the first weekend of the season. Bravo said batting was about more than just hitting.”Yes, we are an aggressive batting line-up but that’s not cricket,” he said. “My message to the batsmen especially is that the basics of the game are still required. The smarts of the game are still required. These guys just need to apply themselves a bit more and I think they’re getting to understand that.”The games we lose, we have those learnings, so that when we speak cricket, they get to understand that the evidence is there on why we are failing as a batting group. As coaches, it is about telling them that cricketing shots are allowed in T20s as well.”[L to R] Chandrakant Pandit, Venkatesh Iyer, Dwayne Bravo and Ajinkya Rahane have a chat•NurPhoto via Getty Images

KKR’s upper and lower middle order (Nos. 4 to 8) has averaged 17.22 so far this season while at 113.63, with Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh failing to reproduce their performances from the last few seasons. But Bravo maintained that the tournament was still in its early days.”Batting is not our main concern,” Bravo said. “We are not the only team after three matches in this position. But we are working on being smarter. Once we get that right, we’ll be fine. We bat fairly deep and it’s an area we are letting ourselves down [in], but these guys are all quality players.”In a tournament where there are 14 games, you don’t judge a player who has had success over the years after just two games. You’re judging them based on two games, because one game none of them batted.”In the IPL you don’t expect any player to be consistent with 14 games. It’s important to keep encouraging them, remind them of how great they are. They already have success in IPL with KKR.”And Rinku will win two games by himself, Russell will win two by himself. Ramandeep will contribute, Venky will come into his own, and will also win two games by himself. There are so many match-winners there.”While KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit has called for teams to be allowed a greater say in the preparation of pitches on their home grounds, Bravo didn’t comment on the surfaces at Eden Gardens. Instead, he felt home advantage also came from players feeding off the energy of the crowds.”For me, you turn up, you play,” he said. “The team that plays the best will win – whether it’s slow, it’s turning, or not turning. For me, my language to the players will always be to make the necessary adjustments for the conditions.”And what helps us with home advantage is the fans. I think that is more important than how the pitch plays. I will not really comment much about pitches. Once the fans are there into the game and cheering us on, that makes a difference.”

Arsenal eyeing £85m Partey upgrade who’s "Santi Cazorla-esque"

da bet esporte: Arsenal enjoyed another unbelievable Premier League campaign this year, but just like last season, it ended trophyless.

da fazobetai: Mikel Arteta's squad have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years, but there is still a slight gap between them and Manchester City, which they have to address this summer.

The latest player touted for a move to the Emirates would be an upgrade on the talented Thomas Partey at the base of midfield, and interestingly, he has won comparisons to one of the Gunners' most beloved cult figures: Santi Cazorla.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Arsenal are one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing Benfica's star midfielder Joao Neves this summer.

Joao Neves

The article does not mention the other interested teams by name, but another report from Portugal has revealed Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United as the other English teams keen on the youngster.

In fact, the story reveals that United have already seen a €60m – £51m – offer rejected, as the Lisbon-based club are not prepared to entertain offers below €100m, which is around £85m.

It could be a challenging and expensive deal to complete for Edu Gaspar and Co, but with signs Neves could be better than Partey and comparisons to Cazorla, it's one worth pursuing.

How Neves compares to Partey and Cazorla

As the Benfica ace would likely be brought in to play either at the base of midfield or potentially as the left eight, let's first look at how he compares to the man he'd likely replace: Partey.

The Ghanaian international only played 882 minutes across all competitions this season, so to get a more fair comparison it would make sense to compare his underlying numbers from last season to the 19-year-old's from this season.

With that said, who comes out on top? Would the Portuguese prospect really be a better option already? In short, yes he would.

For example, while the former Atlético Madrid star comes out on top in metrics like clearances, tackles and progressive passes, he's second best in practically everything else, including tackles won, blocks, interceptions, successful take-ons, ball recoveries, aerial duels won, passing accuracy and many more, all per 90.

With it clear the 19-year-old would already be an upgrade on the Gunners' current midfield general, where have the comparisons to their former Spanish magician come from?

Well, it was data analyst Ben Mattinson who described the Tavira-born gem as "Santi Cazorla-esque", citing his dribbling ability, technical mastery and nature to "win the ball" and "then carry it past many opponents" as the main reasons why.

Moreover, Mattinson argues that he can "see the game better than others" and that while young, "he loves the battles" and "will become one of the best CMs" in world football.

Ultimately, while the fee will be enormous, and the pressure equally so, Neves already looks the superior player to Partey, and with some apparent similarities to Cazorla in his game and temperament, this is a transfer Arsenal cannot afford to miss out on.

Alister McDermott retires at 29 after string of injuries

Craig McDermott’s son had recently returned to the Queensland side after a three-year absence

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jul-2020Alister McDermott, the quick bowler who played for Queensland and Brisbane Heat, has announced his retirement at the age of 29. Despite returning to his state side after a three-year absence in 2019-20, McDermott, son of former Australia quick Craig McDermott, remained sidelined due to a string of injuries, including a broken wrist, and persistent back trouble, prompting him to end his career.”From a young age I gave my full commitment to fulfilling my dream, looking to improve my fitness, strength, and skill level,” McDermott wrote on his website. “Even though I did not have the extended career I had dreamed of as a kid due to injuries, form and self-confidence, I have had some amazing memories that I can be proud of, and was fortunate to play with some absolute legends of the game.”Though he struggled with injuries, McDermott, who was part of Queensland’s Sheffield Shield (2011-12) and ODI Cup (2012-13) winning teams, and also Heat’s Big Bash League title win in 2013, had impressive numbers across formats. He took 75 wickets at 24.77 in 20 first-class appearances, the last of which came in November 2014, before he was cut from the contract list the following season. He also played 27 list A games, taking 48 wickets, and 25 T20s for 29 wickets. He played his last T20 in January 2015 in the BBL. McDermott was also a member of Australia’s Under-19 World Cup winning team in 2010, that was led by Mitchell Marsh and included the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Kane Richardson.Following a good showing in a List A match for Australia A against Durham, McDermott earned an Australia call-up as an injury replacement for the ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE in 2012. He was retained in the squad for the T20I leg of the tour as well, but did not get a look in.

Farke could drop Gruev to unleash Leeds’ "defensive monster"

Leeds United have now reached the climax of the 2023/24 campaign as they prepare to take on Norwich City in the first leg of the play-offs this afternoon.

The Whites travel to Norfolk to take on the Canaries at Carrow Road as they attempt to take an advantage back to Elland Road for the second leg next Thursday night.

They are both competing to secure a place in the final at Wembley later this month, where they will either face Southampton or West Bromwich Albion.

Daniel Farke's men come into this clash with Norwich off the back of a 2-1 defeat to the Saints on the final day of the regular Championship season at Elland Road.

Adam Armstrong and Will Smallbone scored the goals for the away side to secure all three points, and the German head coach could make some changes to the starting XI from that game to prepare for the Canaries.

Farke must be wary of the threat Gabriel Sara poses in the middle of the park for the home side and should unleash Archie Gray from the start to stop the talented Brazilian.

Who Archie Gray should replace

Leeds must ruthlessly drop Ilia Gruev to the bench for this clash in Norfolk to make space for the teenage sensation to return to the starting lineup.

In the 2-1 loss to Southampton, LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross handed Gruev a match rating of 4/10 for his performance, writing that the ex-Bundesliga maestro looked off the pace and rusty.

That came after the Bulgaria international had a dismal night at Loftus Road away at QPR in the previous match. Cross awarded the lightweight a horrendous match rating of just 2/10, citing his lack of presence in midfield as one of the key issues for the side on the night.

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

In those two games, Gruev lost nine of his ten ground duels as opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him in the middle of the park.

He only made two tackles and one interception in those two games and these statistics do not suggest that the former Werder Bremen star is in the right form to be tasked with stopping one of the best midfielders in the league.

Gruev's defensive work left a lot to be desired against QPR, in particular, as he failed to close down his man quickly enough for both of their first two goals on the night, to go along with his incredibly weak play out of possession across both of the last two fixtures.

Why Leeds must stop Gabriel Sara

The Brazilian magician, Sara, was Norwich's only inclusion in the Championship Team of the Season, which included Ethan Ampadu, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville, and has the quality to cause the Whites big problems.

No Leeds central midfielder scored more than one goal or registered more than three assists in the second tier throughout the regular season, whilst the Canaries star showcased his quality as both a scorer and a creator.

As you can see in the table above, Sara racked up a staggering 25 direct goal contributions in 46 appearances as a central midfielder for Norwich in the second division, playing alongside Kenny McLean – who was a reported target for the Whites last summer.

The left-footed star currently ranks within the top 4% of Championship midfielders for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.26), the top 5% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.96), and the top 6% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.29).

These statistics illustrate why it is so important that Leeds do everything in their power to keep him quiet at Carrow Road, and at Elland Road next week, as he has the quality to be a match-winner on his day.

This is why Farke must unleash Gray in the holding midfield position next to Kamara, with Gruev dropped to the bench, as he has the potential to stop the Brazilian sensation in his tracks.

Why Leeds should start Archie Gray

Firstly, the 18-year-old star should be unleashed as his recent form in physical duels suggests he is more likely to come out on top in a battle with Sara, whereas the Bulgarian lightweight has lost nine of his last ten on the deck.

Over his last three appearances for Leeds in the Championship, Gray has won nine of 12 duels in the middle of the park and this suggests that he has the physicality and positioning to dominate opposition players in physical contests.

He also ranks within the top 5% of midfielders in the division this season for dribblers tackled per 90 (1.48) and the top 6% for percentage of dribblers tackled (67%), which illustrates how effective Gray is at stopping players from driving forward with the ball at their feet.

Gray also ranks within the top 9% of his positional peers for tackles won in his team's defensive third per 90 (1.25), which speaks to how effective the young ace is at stopping opposition attacks near Illan Meslier's goal.

U23 scout Antonio Mango once hailed the England U21 international as a "defensive monster" whose superb engine and exceptional stamina allow him to press opponents to stop "dangerous" situations.

This suggests that he could have the legs to constantly press Sara when he gets the ball to give the Norwich star as little time as possible in possession.

As you can see in the table above, the 6 foot 2 stopper has won the majority of his duels in the Championship so far this season, which shows how strong he has been in battles against opposition players.

Overall, Gray has the defensive and physical abilities to offer a solid presence at the base of the midfield to put a stop to Sara's wizardry for the Canaries, which is why he should start in an attempt to limit the Brazilian star's influence on the game, and Gruev should be dropped to make way for him.

Freedman could strike gold by immediately axing £110k-p/w Newcastle trio

da cassino online: Newcastle United could be set for a new arrival at St James' Park this summer, but there won't be anyone joining the first-team or even the coaching staff under boss Eddie Howe.

da roleta: The Magpies are looking to replace their Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, with the 53-year-old currently on gardening leave amid interest from Manchester United, who are looking to overhaul their staff behind the scenes.

It was reported a couple of months ago that Ashworth confirmed his desire to join the Red Devils, but there is no deal in place for him to leave the club and join up with Erik ten Hag's side.

Dan Ashworth with his son.

Despite this, the Daily Mail confirmed that Crystal Palace man Dougie Freedman is on the Magpies' final shortlist to replace Ashworth – with United also interested in tempting the 49-year-old to Old Trafford.

The former Palace striker was present at Selhurst Park in midweek, as Newcastle fell to a 2-0 defeat against the Eagles, with members of the Magpies hierarchy, including co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi also in attendance.

Freedman has gained a fantastic reputation for his domestic dealings in the transfer market, recommending the likes of Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, with the trio set to make the club a lot of money after their successive stints at the club – the latter duo mooted to depart for £60m plus each.

There's no denying, that despite the investment from the Saudi PIF, the Magpies squad needs an overhaul, with the Palace chief fitting the bill, especially given his recent successes in the market.

That being said, here are three players who Freedman could send packing immediately, should he take over the Sporting Director role at St James' Park…

1 Callum Wilson

Striker Callum Wilson has often had to settle as Newcastle's second-choice option behind Alexander Isak, understandable given the Swede's record of 21 goals in all competitions so far this campaign.

The former Bournemouth forward has only featured 23 times this season and just three times in 2024, managing to score on eight occasions.

He made his return from injury off the bench in midweek, but he was unable to make any impact and turn the game into the Magpies' favour after Jean-Philippe Mateta's double.

Wilson has undoubtedly been a fantastic servant to the club since his £20m from Bournemouth back in 2020, scoring 46 times in 105 appearances for the club, but he's been unable to showcase his talents this season after his constant injury issues.

He's been sidelined by two different hamstring issues, whilst a calf injury saw him miss a further two months, before suffering a chest injury upon his return in the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest in February.

The striker, who earns a reported £46k-per-week, as per Capology, is now 32 years old and his constant setbacks this season have prevented the forward from putting consistent runs together in the first-team – with his longest run of games without injury being just a lowly six.

callum-wilson-unleash-newcastle-united-aston-villa-eddie-howe-tyrone-mings

He only has one year left on his current deal at the club, with Wilson turning 33 before the end of next season. That being said, Freedman should look to move him on this summer to avoid losing him for nothing, with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal previously linked with a move for the forward.

2 Miguel Almiron

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron.

After his sensational goalscoring run during last season, which saw the attacker score eight goals in just nine Premier League games, Miguel Almiron has failed to replicate any of his good form under Howe this campaign.

He's featured 29 times in the Premier League this campaign, scoring on just three occasions – and like Wilson, has struggled for fitness during key parts of the season.

The Paraguayan suffered a knee injury in the sensational comeback win against West Ham United and has failed to feature since, with the attacker missing the last four league outings.

Newcastle wingerMiguelAlmiron

With the club undoubtedly looking to strengthen this summer, Almiron may find himself a victim of the club's huge investment, losing his first-team spot, but potentially being sold altogether.

Almiron, who earns £60k-per-week at St James' Park as per Spotrac, was linked with a £30m move to join Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia back in January. Talk surrounding the 30-year-old's potential move to the Middle East came around after Newcastle's current chief executive Darren Eales suggested that the club must sell players before making any major signings due to the constraints of FFP.

The forward – who has also been mooted for an exit this summer – remains under contract at St James' Park until 2026, but Freedman may choose to sell him during the summer after his disappointing campaign, allowing the potential new Sporting Director to work his magic in the window.

3 Yankuba Minteh

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

Despite only arriving at Newcastle last summer, winger Yankuba Minteh could be set for a move away from Tyneside despite not making a single appearance for the club, as per The Telegraph.

The 19-year-old Gambian has scored nine times and produced five assists in his 25 appearances on loan at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, as he looks to gain valuable first-team experience.

The youngster has scored more goals than Almiron this season, but he could also suffer the same fate as the Paraguayan this summer, with the forward potentially allowing the club to make a quick profit and invest in other areas of the squad.

Minteh, who only earns a reported £4.2k-per-week, as per Capology, has been previously linked with Italian side Napoli ahead of the summer window, but any deal could depend on Freedman's arrival on Tyneside this summer.

He certainly possesses a lot of quality as demonstrated during his stint away from Newcastle this season, but given Freedman's success in identifying brilliant young talents, the Gambian may have to make way to allow the 49-year-old to work his magic at St James' Park.

With £110k-per-week worth of talent there for the Magpies to move on, such funds could be valuable as the club seek to strengthen moving forward.

Newcastle could land dream Gordon partner this summer in £60m "magician"

The club are looking for reinforcements in forward areas this summer.

Virat Kohli: Mayank Agarwal's character on the Australia tour stood out for me

He also mentioned how Hanuma Vihari took up opening despite being a middle-order batsman

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2020Virat Kohli has highlighted the “character” of Mayank Agarwal as a factor that “stood out” for him during India’s tour of Australia in 2018-19, where Agarwal made his Test debut. In Part 2 of a chat with Agarwal on , Kohli explained what impressed him the most about the opener. The visitors had dropped Shikhar Dhawan for the Test series and then lost Prithvi Shaw to injury in a warm-up match, leaving them with only Murali Vijay and KL Rahul as experienced names in the line-up.But after both openers failed to deliver in the Adelaide as well the Perth Tests, India switched to a completely new opening pair for the third Test in Melbourne. Despite the series being tied at 1-1, Kohli believed Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari – who started his career batting at No. 6 and had never opened before – were up for the challenge of facing the new ball in Australia. On getting someone new and inexperienced into the side midway into a series – like Kohli did with Agarwal in Australia then – he stressed that one’s approach to the game mattered the most. “I had seen you play for RCB [in the IPL]. I knew even then you played international bowlers with absolute conviction and would take them on. You were performing well in first-class for a while and in a dominating way [as well],” Kohli said.He stated that Agarwal being positive and going about things in the right manner also worked in his favour, especially “when there was a requirement”. “That is something that always stood out with you and when you had scored so many runs, it was a no-brainer for you to come in when there was a requirement. But it was your character that stood out the most for me than the number of runs you had scored because I knew you’d be fearless and play without a baggage and thinking what might happen,” Kohli mentioned.ALSO READ: Virat Kohli credits Sachin Tendulkar for turnaround after dismal 2014 England tourOn Vihari, Kohli was quick to point out how he immediately took up the opener’s slot despite starting out in the middle-order.”We had seen the way Vihari played – he would come towards the ball, he was brave and he was sure of himself – and in the first opportunity that we presented to him to open the innings, he said, ‘I’m going to do it’. That is what matters to me the most. A guy who wants to get into the tough situations will come out either holding his head high or learning.”Eventually, India won the Melbourne Test by 137 runs to take a 2-1 lead and following a draw in the next match in Sydney, became the first Asian side to win a Test series in Australia. On being asked by Agarwal as to what routine he followed before getting ready to face every ball, Kohli responded that that he tried analysing “everything about the bowler”. “If he bowled a certain delivery, then was there a difference in his body language? Did he do something different in his run up and his wrists? Was the arm speed different or was he holding the ball [in] a different way?”He described it as an “amazing feeling” when he hit the bowler after perfectly judging his methods. “[If] I’ve seen the ball position and I know where the ball is going to come, that’s the most amazing feeling as the bowler actually bowls there [where you want him to] – then you just smash it and it’s an unbelievable feeling. But for that, you need to be ready and at peace with yourself so that the fear [of getting out] goes away.”

Rahul Dravid: Biosecure environment 'may not be easy to create' for domestic cricket

The head of NCA believes that come October, the Covid-19 impact will hit Indian cricket more

Shashank Kishore31-Jul-2020Rahul Dravid, the former India captain, has all but ruled out the possibility of a full 2020-21 domestic season in India due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He stressed on the need for the BCCI to prioritise the tournaments they want to conduct in the limited time frame that could be available from after October-November.For context, a total of 2036 games, across various age groups in the men’s and women’s category, were played during the 2019-20 season. Under normal circumstances, July would have marked the start of the domestic season in India. Many associations, like TNCA and KSCA, have earlier used the window to conduct highly-competitive first-class matches in preparation for the domestic season. With India’s metro cities still under some sort of restrictions post the Covid-19 lockdown, associations have either indefinitely postponed or cancelled their tournaments, leaving hundreds of domestic cricketers uncertain. The National Cricket Academy, which Dravid heads, hasn’t resumed operations, and it’s unclear yet as to when a formal SOP will be released for the resumption of domestic cricket in the country.”Hopefully if we’re able to find a level of cure or vaccine even towards the end of the year, we’ll be in a position to be able to complete, even if not the whole domestic season, but large parts of it,” Dravid said in a webinar hosted by . “Obviously prioritising what that would be is important so that young boys and girls don’t miss out on cricket for a year. We’ve been lucky so far [that the pandemic started in March towards the end of BCCI’s domestic season], but come October, things might start getting stressful.”A few international tournaments have been cancelled and repositioned, and people can always find time and place for that, but once October comes around, that’s when I think it’ll start hitting us more. The next domestic season, for a lot of our young domestic players – juniors, Under-16s, Under-19s and women cricketers – start in October. If we aren’t able to get back to a level of normalcy from then – it could take longer – we’ll see the real impact on our domestic cricket and grassroots cricket. This year is probably more important for someone in his final year of Under-19s, than say for someone who is 23-24.”ALSO READ: England tour cancelled, T20 Challenge in doubt, no selection panel: What’s next for India women?Dravid welcomed the resumption of international cricket with the England-West Indies series last month, but emphasised it may not be easy to create similar biosecure bubbles in domestic or junior cricket. The senior men’s domestic calendar, for example, has 38 teams criss-crossing the length and breadth of the country for matches. In some cases, teams from the North East host matches at neutral venues citing infrastructural challenges. Such conditions will leave BCCI with several logistical challenges in hosting domestic tournaments.”It was nice to watch some live cricket with the England-West Indies series. They did a great job of ensuring the kind of environment they created,” he said. “I heard Jason Holder say much later that it was tough being in that [biosecure] environment for more than two months. But it was important that we got something going, and great that it got going without a hitch. But my worry is that in domestic or junior cricket, it [biobubbles] may not be easy to create.”Dravid also went to great lengths to explain the importance of IPL taking place for the well-being of the cricket ecosystem in India. He was specifically asked about the “BCCI’s desperation to host IPL” at a time when many world events, like the Tokyo Olympics, have been postponed.”I’m sure leagues like the IPL will be able to put in the kind of biosecure environments required, like what EPL, Bundesliga or what ECB did with the England-West Indies series,” he said. “I’m sure every effort will be made to do that. Let’s be honest. There is a lot of revenue that rides with tournaments like the IPL. I know if you’re cynical about it, you can only look at the money that the big players make or maybe the franchises or BCCI make, but where does that money go? It goes down to state associations, in conducting Under-19 and Under-16 tournaments, so a lot of the revenue associated with the game.”The fact of the matter is, none of the domestic sport actually generates any revenue. In fact, it costs a lot of money to hold. So if you want to give young boys and girls the opportunity to play, if you want to give them opportunities to express their talent, money has got to come from somewhere. The reality is, to conduct tournaments and develop high-class athletes, it costs money; there’s a financial element involved.”It’s easy to say we’re conducting [the IPL] it only because of the huge finances riding on it. I would like to think, without compromising on safety and ensuring all the SOPs are in place to conduct a safe and secure tournament, the money generated from the IPL filters all through our sport and helps fund junior and domestic cricket. That is why sporting organisations are keen to conduct these tournaments. They understand if we don’t have that revenue, not only will that tournament suffer but the ripple effect will be felt all the way down.”

Over the past few years, Crystal Palace have arguably been one of the most successful Premier League clubs in the transfer market.

Their recruitment strategy has seemingly kept them in the league for a sustained period, but they will hope their latest acquisition, Oliver Glasner, can take them one step further.

Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, and Joachim Andersen are all examples of absolute bargains, but the Eagles also have had some misses among the hits.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at one player who’s costing the club millions via his wage, even earning more than Guehi.

Marc Guehi’s Salary

The summer of 2021 saw a young, promising centre-half leave Chelsea to join Palace in a deal worth £18m, which looks like an absolute steal today.

Since moving to Selhurst Park, the 23-year-old has developed into one of the most reliable defenders in the division, with his performances earning him the captain’s armband and an international call-up for England.

Marc Guehi challenges Jarrod Bowen against West Ham United.

Unfortunately, the number six is out injured at the moment after being forced off early against Brighton & Hove Albion last month, but he’s still started 22 matches in the league this campaign.

Nonetheless, considering he’s such a vital player for Palace, his wage being at just £50k-per-week seems like an astute piece of business, especially when you consider the impact of one individual who’s earning more.

One of Roy Hodgson's worst signings is burning a wage at Crystal Palace

One of the signings which Roy Hodgson made has been burning a wage since joining Crystal Palace.

ByZak Anderton Mar 3, 2024 Jairo Riedewald’s wage at Palace

In 2017, 20-year-old Jairo Riedewald moved to Palace for a fee of £7.9m, which saw him play under his former boss Frank de Boer in England.

However, it wasn’t exactly the perfect start to life in England for the Netherlands ace, who started just 11 Premier League games over his first three seasons at the club.

That said, the former Ajax prospect did feature far more heavily in the 2020/21 campaign, where he played 33 top-flight matches at the heart of the Eagles midfield.

Fast forward to this season, and he’s started just twice, which is his best run of starts in three years, with his total tally in the Premier League being just three starts in the last three seasons.

But the biggest concern surrounding Riedewald is his wage, which sees him earn £55k per week, which is higher than Guehi, equating to £2.9m per season.

Olise, Henderson, Eze

£100k

Edouard

£90k

Clyne, Andersen

£80k

Lerma, Doucoure

£70k

Riedewald, Richards

£55k

As can be seen in the table above, this puts him not far off the top earners in the Palace squad, and considering his lack of minutes, it’s fair to say that he’s simply rinsing the club.

Having said that, with the number 44’s contract set to expire in June this year, it seems that Riedewald will be on his way out of the club for good, with Glasner expected to let him walk for free.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that the signing of the versatile Dutch player has been nothing short of a disaster, with him failing to impress under any manager since 2017.
