Rabada, Nortje arrive in Mumbai, but will have to miss Capitals’ first gameKagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who picked up 52 wickets between them in IPL 2020, have reached the Delhi Capitals team hotel in Mumbai but will miss at least their team’s first match – on April 10 against the Chennai Super Kings – as they will have to first be in quarantine for one week, a franchise statement confirmed. The Capitals’ second game is on April 15, against the Rajasthan Royals, and the two quicks are expected to be ready for that. The two South African fast bowlers played big parts in helping the Capitals reach the final for the first time in the IPL last season, and were subsequently retained by the franchise. They were both part of the first two ODIs against Pakistan in the ongoing series at home, and left for India on Monday.Shahrukh Khan reminds Anil Kumble of Kieron Pollard
Watching Shahrukh Khan bat is a throwback to the Kieron Pollard experience at the Mumbai Indians for Anil Kumble, the Punjab Kings director of cricket operations. Kumble said that he used to bowl to Pollard with strict instructions not to hit the ball straight back; with Khan, Kumble hasn’t even been trying.”He reminds me, a bit like Pollard actually,” Kumble said in a video posted by the Punjab Kings on Twitter. “When I was with Mumbai Indians, Pollard in the nets was dangerous. I used to bowl a bit, so the first things that I would tell him was, ‘look, don’t hit straight’.”Here I am not even trying. I am a lot older now, and the body doesn’t take the bowling anymore. So I am not going to bowl at Shahrukh, for sure.”Khan, the uncapped Tamil Nadu batsman, went to the Punjab franchise for INR 5.25 crore (from a base price of INR 20 lakh), and while that took time to sink in for the 25-year-old, he has settled down quickly. He also wants to get cracking with his range-hitting sessions quickly: “Looking forward to lose some balls, get them out of the park.”

Playing under Dhoni ‘on every player’s wish list’, says Moeen
Moeen Ali, the Chennai Super Kings’ new recruit, talked up the franchise’s “structure” and “strong leadership”, saying that they “look a very calm franchise that doesn’t panic”.”It’s very important to have strong leadership and coaches who stay calm, who take the pressure off the players as much as they can and are consistent. We are very lucky we have that,” Ali told the franchise’s website on Wednesday. “At CSK I feel the reality is there for us to win the competition. I’m excited about playing with the players we have here.”The Super Kings are the second-most successful IPL side, behind the Mumbai Indians, and have the remarkable record of qualifying for the playoffs on ten out of their 11 seasons; 2020 was the first time they failed to do so. And MS Dhoni, their captain from the very first season, has often been credited as one of the chief reasons for the team’s great success.”I think what differentiates CSK from other teams is actually how they structure everything… from the squad they have to the way they do things. They look a very calm franchise that doesn’t panic,” Ali said. “I’ve spoken to players who have played under MS and they tell me how he improves their game. I believe a great captain does that.”I think it’s something on every player’s wish list to play under MS. I think it’s the confidence and the clarity he gives people. It’s exciting.”Amit Mishra puts in the hard yards… as a batsman
Legspinner Amit Mishra is trying to become a better batsman, preparing for “situations in matches when I will have to string partnerships of 25-30 runs” for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL.Mishra, 38, has played first-class cricket for over two decades, and while he even has a first-class double-century, has made a name squarely as a top-notch legspinner. In the list of most successful bowlers in the IPL, Mishra ranks second only to Lasith Malinga (170 wickets) with 160 wickets from 150 matches.”I am working on my batting,” he was quoted as saying by PTI. “The coaches have also told me to keep practicing my batting as there might be situations in matches when I will have to string partnerships of 25-30 runs.
“We need to be ready for everything. Basically, if I am batting with a recognised batsman, then I should focus on taking singles and giving the strike to my partner.”The Capitals are based in Mumbai, where they will play their first set of matches in IPL 2021, starting with their first fixture against the Chennai Super Kings on April 10, the second day of the tournament.

Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, who were all on national duty for the limited-overs leg of the series against England, have shifted from Pune to Mumbai and joined the Mumbai Indians squad ahead of IPL 2021. The tournament kicks off on April 9 with Mumbai, the defending champions, taking on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. While Yadav made his international debut during the England series, Krunal, who had only played T20Is, made his ODI debut last week. Both players made an instant impact. Yadav, who didn’t get picked for any of the three ODIs, scored a match-winning 31-ball 57 in his first innings in international cricket, the fourth T20I against England, and followed that up with a 17-ball 32 in the final fixture as India won the series 3-2.Krunal, meanwhile, played his first ODI after 18 T20I appearances, blasting a 31-ball 58 in a winning cause on debut. Ponting, Ashwin join Delhi Capitals bubble
Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting along with R Ashwin, Axar Patel Shimron Hetmeyer and Chris Woakes have joined the team bubble in Mumbai. While Ponting and Patel reached on Sunday, the other three players landed in Mumbai on Monday. All of them will now undergo a week-long quarantine before starting the training. The Capitals, who finished runners-up last season, are expected to started their preliminary training session from Wednesday. The initial training session will begin with a few players including Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Umesh Yadav, Prithivi Shaw, Avesh Khan along with assistant coach Pravin Amre. This group along with a few other uncapped players reached Mumbai last week and will be coming out of quarantine on Tuesday, subject to them clearing the mandatory Covid-19 testing.Meanwhile, the trio of Rishabh Pant, Sam Billings and Tom Curran will enter the Delhi Capitals bubble on Monday evening from Pune, where they wrapped up the India-England series. Players travelling to the IPL team bubbles from the England series do not need to undergo the mandatory quarantine and are free to start training.‘Dream come true’ to play under Dhoni – K Gowtham
K Gowtham, the offspinning-allrounder, said that playing under Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is a “dream come true” for him as he gears up to make his debut for the franchise in IPL 2021.”I don’t feel any pressure of expectations playing for a champion side like CSK. In fact, it’s a dream come true for me to be playing under Mahi (MS Dhoni),” said Gowtham, who was bought by the Super Kings at last month’s auction for INR 9.25 crore (US$ 1,273,000 approx) – the highest bid raked in by an uncapped Indian cricketer at any IPL auction.”Bowlers love playing under Mahi because he understands a bowler’s strengths and knows how to get the best out of him,” he added.Gowtham, who was released by the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) after just the one season, said the Super Kings management offers players a conducive environment to express themselves freely.”What differentiates Chennai Super Kings from most teams in the Indian Premier League is the clarity in their thought process and an organised approach,” he said. “The CSK management understands cricket owing to its long association with the game, which again reflects in its approach to players – the comforting words and confidence given when things aren’t going right.”It makes a big difference as it helps a player to express himself. They talk to the player if anything specific is needed or if he’s working on something. When these things are taken care of, it’s much easier for a player to go out and give his best.”The Super Kings will begin their campaign on April 10, with a game against the Delhi Capitals in Mumbai, where they will play their first five games and are currently training, having previously attended a camp in Chennai.

March 28

The Delhi Capitals will have two assistant coaches for IPL 2021, with Ajay Ratra, the former India wicketkeeper, joining Mohammad Kaif in a similar role. Their backroom contingent also consists of Ricky Ponting (head coach), Pravin Amre (batting consultant) and James Hopes (bowling coach).Ratra, a NCA-certified coach, coaches Assam in the domestic circuit. Prior to that, he was involved with Punjab as well as the Indian women’s team as a fielding and wicketkeeping consultant. This will be his first assignment with an IPL franchise.Ratra, who made his international debut in 2002, played six Tests and 12 ODIs for India. His maiden Test century against West Indies in Antigua – an unbeaten 115 – which made him the fifth-youngest Indian and the youngest wicketkeeper overall to score a Test hundred. He played 99 first-class matches, scoring 4029 runs at an average of 30.29, which included eight hundreds and a double-century. He also played in 89 List A games, scoring 1381 runs at 22.63.

Five Knight Riders get cracking with preparatory camp in Navi Mumbai
The Kolkata Knight Riders have hit the ground running in the lead-up to IPL 2021, with five of their players – Varun Chakaravarthy, Rahul Tripathi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Sandeep Warrier and Vaibhav Arora – attending a preparatory camp at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The five players reported to practice after having finished their mandatory seven-day quarantine at the team hotel and took part in light warm-up and batting, bowling, and fielding sessions under the supervision of assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. A number of other Knight Riders players are currently serving their quarantine period in the hotel, as per the BCCI’s guidelines, and will start training soon.Chakravarthy, whose last appearance in a competitive match was during IPL 2020 in November in the UAE, was recently picked for the T20I series in Australia and against England in Ahmedabad, but missed out owing to a shoulder injury and then below-par fitness levels, respectively. The Knight Riders, who are scheduled to kick off their campaign on April 11 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai, will play their league games across four cities also including Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. Nayar was confident that the diverse skill-sets of the players, including recent India debutant Prasidh Krishna, would ensure a good season for the franchise.”The likes of Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill and Prasidh Krishna have done it time and again in the past,” Nayar told . Prasidh, especially, who is now doing it at the international arena. I feel it was quite important for him to go on a big stage as this will give him a lot of confidence.”Nayar admitted that though the IPL’s return to India was likely to enthuse the players, no matches at home for any of the eight franchises this time was the “only con” in this edition of the IPL.”As a cricketer whenever you play in India, you grow a lot more. Coming and playing at Eden Gardens is something that we take pride in and we enjoy,” Nayar said. “To be honest, not playing at Eden Gardens despite playing India is going to be the only con, if I could say so.”Kumble confirms Shami ‘fit to go’ for Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings coach Anil Kumble says their pacer Mohammed Shami is back to full fitness after suffering a wrist injury during the Adelaide Test against Australia last December. “He is fine as far as I know,” Kumble told on Friday. He added that Shami might draft into the playing XI for the Kings’ first game itself against the Rajasthan Royals on April 12.”He is coming to the bio-bubble for the quarantine and he will be out in a few days,” Kumble said. “I know he hasn’t played any matches since his injury but he is good to go. We are really looking forward to him playing a few practice games and then getting ready for the first game.”After returning home following the injury, Shami had started light training at the NCA in Bengaluru last month. Shami had played all 14 games and picked up 20 wickets for the erstwhile Kings XI Punjab team during the last edition of the IPL in the UAE.Mumbai Indians unveil new jersey
The five-time champions will wear a new jersey for the upcoming season, created by designers Shantanu & Nikhil. According to a Mumbai Indians release, the jersey captures the composition of the 5 basic elements of the universe – earth, water, fire, air and sky, each signifying the essence of the team.”The jersey reflects how Mumbai Indians has been built over the years resonating Stability, Cohesion, Confidence, Compassion and Exploration,” the release said. The defending champions begin their 2021 campaign on April 9 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

IPL 2021 will see the Chennai Super Kings don a new jersey, with straps of camouflage added on the shoulders, bordered with gold bands, and three stars emblazoned above the franchise logo.A Super Kings release on Tuesday said the camouflage is a tribute to India’s armed forces, where their captain MS Dhoni holds the position of honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, having also trained with the Parachute Regiment in 2019.

The gold bands, meanwhile, signify the “high standards set by the team both in terms of consistency and fair play – CSK won the IPL fair play award six times in 11 seasons”. The three stars denote the three IPL titles won by the Super Kings in 2010, 2011 and 2018, with them having qualified for the playoffs in 10 seasons and the final eight times.”It has been on our mind for some time now to find ways to raise awareness about the significant and selfless role of the armed forces. The camouflage is an appreciation of their service… they are the true heroes,” Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said.

Damien Wright, the 45-year-old former fast bowler with the experience of coaching in Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh, has been signed up as the bowling coach of the Punjab Kings for the 2021 season of the IPL.Wright, who started his 123-game first-class career in 1997-98 for Worcestershire, played representative cricket till 2011, including for Australia A, and turned to coaching after quitting the game. In the T20 league circuit, he has worked with the Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Stars in the BBL in the past. The Punjab Kings, who have overhauled their side as well as their name – after being Kings XI Punjab for 13 seasons – had former South African pacer Charl Langeveldt as their designated bowling coach last season, with a list of support staffers that includes Anil Kumble, Andy Flower, Jonty Rhodes and Wasim Jaffer.

Man Utd now willing to make £61m bid for "tremendous" top midfield target

Manchester United are now determined to sign a “tremendous” midfielder, with it being revealed they are willing to make a £61m offer.

Man Utd want to sign new midfielder with Mainoo heading for exit

It has now emerged that Kobbie Mainoo could now be heading for the exit door, having failed to start a single Premier League game this season, with Napoli close to getting a deal over the line after a recent round of talks.

Ruben Amorim clearly isn’t fully convinced by Mainoo, having opted to give Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro the nod in the middle of the park for the most part, and doubts remain over Manuel Ugarte, who received heavy criticism after the EFL Cup defeat against Grimsby Town.

With that in mind, the Red Devils have set out to bring in a new midfielder, and Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton recently moved ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba on the list of targets.

According to a report from Spain, however, a different midfielder has now emerged as Man United’s top target, with it being revealed they are willing to make a €70m (£61m) offer for Athletic Club star Oihan Sancet.

United are determined to get a deal for Sancet done, as they believe he fits their desired profile perfectly, and scouts have been sent to watch the Spaniard in action on a number of occasions.

Man Utd preparing bid for £43m Gabriel & Saliba "hybrid" demanded by Amorim

The Red Devils are now readying a big offer for a January signing, with Ruben Amorim personally very keen.

1 ByDominic Lund Oct 22, 2025

The attacking midfielder hasn’t ruled out an exit, but his current employers are working on a new contract, in an effort to stave off interest from elsewhere.

Sancet enjoyed "tremendous" 2024-25 campaign

Many of the Red Devils’ other midfield targets, such as Baleba, Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, play in slightly deeper midfield roles, but the Athletic Club star has an attacking mindset, enjoying a fantastic 2024-25 campaign.

Indeed, the 25-year-old was a constant threat on the front foot in La Liga, amassing 20 goals and assists in all competitions, which impressed Athletic Club sporting director Rafa Alkorta, who described him as “tremendous”.

Sancet clearly has the ability to succeed at Old Trafford, but given his attacking mindset, the Pamplona-born star wouldn’t be a like-for-like replacement for Mainoo, who appears to be heading for the exit door.

Anderson, on the other hand, is accustomed to playing in a deeper midfield role, and the Nottingham Forest star recently displayed his ability to control matches, in what was a remarkable performance for England against Latvia.

Kotian leads India A's fightback after Hermann brothers hit fifties

South Africa A finished the day on 299 for 9 despite a 100-run partnership between Hamza and Jordan Hermann

Shashank Kishore30-Oct-2025Rishabh Pant spent an entire day on the field, seemingly untroubled by his foot, as he returned to action after more than two months in rehab for a foot injury sustained while batting during the fourth Test in Manchester.N Jagadeesan wasn’t as lucky, after B Sai Sudharsan’s spikes got stuck into his right hand during a training session on match eve. The selectors were forced to summon Ishan Kishan as cover. Jagadeesan’s injury meant an opportunity at the top of the order for Ayush Mhatre, the Mumbai opener, who was originally set to play only the second four-day fixture. All eyes were on Pant when he arrived early and began the day with warm-ups, timed sprints and a batting hit prior to the toss, which he won to put South Africa A in to bat. On a green surface at the Centre of Excellence, which offered plenty of seam movement and swing, the decision seemed justifiable. But gritty efforts from Jordan Hermann and Zubayr Hamza drove South Africa A to 299 for 9 at stumps. Nonetheless, they will be disappointed with the total, because there was the promise of a lot more earlier in the day.India A’s efforts in the field were led by Tanush Kotian, the offspinning allrounder, who picked up four wickets. He wheeled away for much of the second and third session, and was complemented by Manav Suthar, who was unlucky to have only two wickets next to his name at the end of a day where he got the odd ball to turn sharply, and jump up at the batters, whenever they seemed indecisive.Jordan Hermann used sweeps to great effect•PTI

Among the fast bowlers, Gurnoor Brar was potent but had just one wicket to show after 15 overs of toil himself. But the wicket he prised out – of Hamza for 66 – exhibited the virtues he’s been picked for. Gurnoor can hit hard lengths, hustle batters for pace, and have them hopping. This was exactly how Hamza fell, when he tried to evade a well-directed short ball to break a 130-run second-wicket stand. But Hamza had several moments he will look back on fondly from his innings. His manner of tackling spin against Tanush Kotian and Manav Suthar will stand him in good stead, if he gets an opportunity to feature in the two Tests that follow later this month. He didn’t let Kotian settle down, and used his feet superbly to hit him over mid-off repeatedly in his first two overs. Then, Hamza drove Kotian against the turn through extra cover, with Pant keen on leaving cover open to try and trap him into a false stroke. Against Suthar’s left-arm spin, he used his feet well to step out and cover the line to flick him against the turn through midwicket. One such stroke brought up his half-century.Hermann was more sedate after a fiery start. He began with square drive off Khaleel Ahmed, and was quick to pounce on anything short. Once Hamza took charge, however, Jordan slipped back into a more tempered pace, playing himself into the innings. Along the way, he was challenged by Brar’s pace and late movement.India A attacked with close-in fielders before stumps•PTI

Once spin came on, Jordan eased himself against Suthar by playing the lap sweeps and paddles, one of which had him fall over in a manner reminiscent of Pant’s red-ball pyrotechnics. He also played the shot of the afternoon – a sumptuous flick through midwicket, off Khaleel, in the first over after lunch. But he was eventually dismissed on 71, lbw while stuck on the crease to play Kotian against the turn.Shortly prior to his wicket, captain Marques Ackermann perished to Kotian when he tried to step out and flick, unable to get to the pitch and chipping one straight to Suthar. This dismissal briefly brought together Jordan and his older brother, Rubin Hermann, to the crease. The latter did a fine job, after it looked at one point as if India A would run through the lower middle-order, when Rivaldo Moonsamy fell just after tea to leave them 197 for 5. Ruben drove through the line fearlessly as Khaleel went searching for some reverse in the final session, and had a slice of luck when Sai Sudharsan put him down at deep backward square leg on 38.But it didn’t cost India A much as he was out soon after. He was bowled by Kotian for 54, to a delivery that kept low after he was too early into a pull shot. Shortly after, Kotian scalped up a classic offspinner’s dismissal, when he bowled Prenelan Subrayen through the gate, to claim his fourth towards the end of the day’s play.As stumps approached, Pant employed as many as six fielders around the bat, with South Africa A’s lower order at the crease. The tactic worked when Tiaan van Vuren’s top-edge off a slog sweep was lapped up by Devdutt Padikkal. India A then enjoyed the perfect finish to the day, when Khaleel trapped Lutho Sipamla lbw, to help them take the honours on the opening day.

Highest paid players in the world

Palmer's salary numbers almost appear child-like when compared to the highest paid players in the world. The list is majorly dominated by former stars of Europe who have flocked to the Saudi Premier League.

One of the greatest forwards to ever grace the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo sits at the top of the list as the top-earner across the world, playing for SPL side Al Nassr.

Following him on the list is his former Real Madrid compatriot in Karim Benzema who plays for Al Ittihad.

Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez comes in at third, followed by Senegalese internationals Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly at fourth and fifth spot.

Abdur Razzak has been a national selector since 2021•Saif Hasnat

Former left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has resigned as a Bangladesh national selector after deciding to contest in the upcoming BCB elections. Razzak, 43, collected his nomination papers to stand as a director candidate from the Khulna division on October 6.Razzak played 13 Tests, 153 ODIs and 34 T20Is for Bangladesh, and remains the third-highest wicket-taker for his country in ODIs. He is one of 61 nominations for the 23 directors’ position that will be contested in the upcoming BCB elections. The general members body, known as the councillors, will elect 23 of the 25 board directors, and the BCB president will be elected from that pool of 25 to serve a four-year term. The most prominent candidates are the incumbent BCB chief Aminul Islam and Tamim Iqbal, who have both announced that they will contest for the board president.”I had the honour of playing for the national team for 14 years and the privilege of serving as a national selector for over four years,” Razzak, who has been a selector for the Bangladesh men’s team since 2021, said in a statement. “I believe the time has come for me to step down from this position to explore the possibilities of contributing to the game that has given me so much, on a larger scale if the opportunity presents itself. I feel this is the right thing to do.”Following Hannan Sarkar’s resignation in February last year, Razzak was one of two members in the selection panel alongside chief Gazi Ashraf Hossain.Reflecting on Razzak’s tenure as a selector, Ashraf praised his colleague. “He was an invaluable member of the panel and brought his undoubted experience and vision to the selection process,” Ashraf said. “We thank him for his contribution and wish him the very best for the future, which we hope will remain closely connected with Bangladesh cricket.”

David Beckham and Gary Neville pull off astonishing transfer coup as Salford City land ex-Liverpool star on shock free transfer

David Beckham and Gary Neville have stunned English football by completing the signing of former Liverpool and Sunderland forward Fabio Borini for Salford City. The 34-year-old Italian, who was a free agent after leaving Sampdoria in the summer, has penned a short-term deal until January with the League Two club, marking a remarkable return to English football.

  • Salford sign ex-PL star

Salford City, co-owned by football icons Beckham and Neville, have completed a surprise move for ex-Premier League striker Borini. The Italian has joined the League Two side on a deal until January after training with the team over the past month. His arrival provides vital experience for Karl Robinson’s side, who are currently dealing with a long-term injury to striker Jay Bird.

Borini, who has represented Chelsea, Liverpool, and Sunderland during his career, returns to England more than six years after his last spell in the country. The 34-year-old forward left Serie B club Sampdoria in the summer and has since been keeping fit by joining training sessions with Salford’s first team. The deal, finalised this week, is seen as a major coup for the League Two outfit as they aim to push higher up the table this season.

    Borini ready for new 'challenge'

“It’s been great, I came in to train to keep myself fit in this transition between contracts and Salford, the Gaffer, Alex Bruce, were kind enough to allow me to use the facilities and train here,” Borini said after the announcement. “Experience is one thing that I can bring, but it’s not just about the experience that I have on the pitch, it’s outside of the pitch so leading by example in training, outside training, how to manage a game. I’ve never played League Two football so I need to learn as well from my team mates the main characteristics of this league, but I will bring myself as an open book for my team mates to use me, learn from me or help me, so I’m very open to this challenge.”

He added: “It’s a challenge that I’m embracing and I chose to embrace because I needed the real football, something that warms my heart for football, not for anything else.” The Italian’s comments underline his passion for the game and his excitement at taking on a new test in the latter stages of his career. Borini’s leadership and top-flight pedigree could prove crucial as Salford look to strengthen both on and off the pitch.

  • Borini's nomadic career

Borini’s career has spanned more than a decade at the highest levels of European football. After coming through Bologna and Chelsea’s youth systems, Borini made his name with Roma before moving to Liverpool, where he scored in the Premier League and netted in the 2014 League Cup final. Spells with Sunderland, AC Milan, and Verona followed, alongside a brief adventure in Turkey with Karagumruk, reflecting a career filled with top-tier experience across multiple countries.

His signing not only boosts Salford’s forward options but also adds an experienced figure to the dressing room — something manager Robinson has openly valued since his appointment. Salford sit ninth in the League Two standings with six wins in their opening 12 matches.

Borini’s arrival at Salford continues a pattern of ambitious moves by Beckham and Neville’s ownership group, who remain determined to elevate the club beyond League Two. Since completing a fresh takeover earlier this year, the pair have reportedly committed significant financial backing to strengthen the team’s infrastructure and playing staff. Their goal is to establish Salford as a competitive force capable of challenging for promotion and eventually securing a stable position in the Championship.

    What comes next?

Borini is expected to make his debut for Salford City later this month, pending match fitness with registration already cleared by the EFL and the FA. The club’s next fixtures could provide the perfect opportunity for him to ease into League Two football while mentoring younger players around him. For Beckham and Neville, this move signals their continued ambition to blend experience with youth in pursuit of steady, long-term progress at the Peninsula Stadium.

Salford’s management have already made clear that Borini’s short-term deal could be extended if he adapts well and makes a meaningful impact. Given his experience, the Italian could become an integral part of Robinson’s system as the club aims for a late playoff push.

Aston Villa struck gold on £12m ace who’s now worth the same as Grealish

Aston Villa are officially a Champions League club, an absolutely fantastic achievement that would have seemed impossible this time last year.

The driving force behind this success has without doubt been the excellent recruitment, with a large chunk of that being funded by Villa icon Jack Grealish.

bryan-gil-jack-grealish-tottenham-opinion

The now-Champions League winner left Villa Park in 2021 for an astronomical £100m fee, joining the dominant Manchester City.

Today, Grealish isn’t worth anywhere near the sun that City spent, and he’s now valued the same as one of Unai Emery’s most reliable performers.

What Villa paid for Ezri Konsa

After achieving promotion back to the Premier League in the 2018/19 season, Dean Smith had one clear aim in the transfer window: to reinforce the defence.

Matt Target, Tyrone Mings, and Kortney Hause all joined the newly promoted side that summer, as well as a 21-year-old Ezri Konsa.

ezri-konsa-aston-villa

Prior to his move, the defender had impressed at Brentford during his first campaign in the Championship, starting 42 matches and keeping 11 clean sheets.

The Bees defender cost Villa just £12m back then, with the “high potential defender,” as dubbed by Smith, now becoming a valuable asset in the squad.

Konsa's market value in 2024

Since arriving at the club, Konsa has been a constant figure in the first XI, making at least 24 starts every season since 2019, while also playing every game last term.

However, the number 4 has developed immensely under the Spanish coach, to the point where he’s now showcasing his ability on a European stage and potentially for his nation, England, this summer.

Regardless of whether he’s been deployed as a centre half or as a right back, Konsa has proven that he’s an “impressive” star, as dubbed by StatmanDave, over his 34 league starts.

The fact that he’s shown his versatility this season is one of the main reasons why his value has skyrocketed in the past 12 months, to the point where he’s now worth the same as Grealish.

3. Ben White

£51m

4. Levi Colwill

5. Konsa, Branthwaite, Stones

Via CIES' Football Observatory

As you can see from the table above, Konsa is now estimated to be worth £34m by CIES’ Football Observatory, which makes him the joint-fifth-highest valued English defender in the Premier League.

On top of that, he’s the sixth-most-valued player in the Villa squad, worth the same as Boubacar Kamara, while also ranking first amongst defenders in Emery’s team.

Ezri Konsa

What makes Konsa have such a fantastic profile is his ability to be just as dominant on the ball as he is off it, which separates him from plenty of his positional peers in England.

In evidence of that, the 26-year-old boasts an impressive 93% pass accuracy, 70.5 touches, and a dribbled past of 0.1 per game this season in the Premier League.

Overall, it’s crystal clear that Villa truly hit the jackpot by signing Konsa for just £12m, and if he continues to perform to a similar standard that he has this season, then his £34 valuation will only continue to rise, potentially to the point where he surpasses Grealish entirely.

Southampton have had nightmare with flop who’s now worth less than Manning

Southampton will be pleased that they're entering into the luck-of-the-draw of the playoffs off the back of a victory at Elland Road, getting the better of a nervous Leeds United side 2-1 to stop their poor run of form from getting out of hand.

Before this victory in West Yorkshire, Russell Martin's Saints had lost their last three second-tier games on the spin which included a humbling 5-0 loss to Championship title-winners Leicester City on the road.

Kyle Walker-Peters stood out in the contest against Daniel Farke's Whites by assisting Will Smallbone's winner, a crucial player for Martin throughout the season as a whole too who even has had admirers from the Premier League watching on.

Casting an eye over the left-back position away from Walker-Peters' trusty right-hand flank, the Saints aren't quite as secure with this costly dud really struggling to ever make an impact in this position since joining in 2022.

Juan Larios' transfer to Southampton

Joining for a bumper £6m two years ago, which would have undoubtedly raised a few eyebrows with zero senior appearances under his belt anywhere, Juan Larios was expected to be a similar star like Gavin Bazunu when entering the South Coasts ranks from the Manchester City academy.

However, the big move to the Saints for the Spaniard has, arguably, been too much too soon, as he is now a forgotten background figure at St. Mary's after suffering wretched luck with injuries.

Videoed back in training this March on social media, Larios has been out of action for the Saints since pulling up with an injury at home to Newcastle United in October of 2022 and will want to make up for lost time when fully back up to fitness.

In total, the unlucky left-back has only made five appearances across two full seasons with Southampton cursing their luck now that they dropped £6m without even flinching to get him into the building from the Etihad in the first place.

Larios' worth has fallen off a cliff as a result of his constant presence in the St. Mary's treatment room, with the promising youngster now worth less than Ryan Manning who has struggled at points this season as a first-teamer under Martin.

Larios' transfer value in 2024

Formerly on the books at Barcelona as an up-and-coming starlet before moving to England, Larios will be disappointed that his valuation, according to Football Transfers, now stands at a lesser £1.1m.

Manning's worth is superior to the injury-prone Spaniard's now, coming in at a hefty £4.2m after joining Martin's men on a free transfer just last year after he let his contract at Swansea City run down.

Larios' transfer value over the years

May 2024

£1.1m

October 2023

£1.8m

December 2022

£3.4m

September 2022

£6m

Sourced by Football Transfers

Still, even with the Saints number three's worth being high compared to Larios' falling value, Martin will want to upgrade on Manning if his team leap back up to the top flight at the end of the playoffs owing to his shaky displays throughout the campaign.

The Irishman, away in the 5-0 defeat to the Foxes, had a shocker from a 30-minute cameo off the bench with Enzo Maresca's men scoring four of their five goals on the night after the poor 27-year-old was introduced.

It will be intriguing to see if Martin does bolster this spot if Southampton clinch promotion at Wembley at the end of the month, knowing that he cannot rely on Larios to be adequate backup to Manning whilst the ex-Man City youngster remains troubled by injuries.
