Leeds now hold talks over exit for £90k-a-week player not wanted by Farke

Leeds United have held opening talks over an exit for a £90,000-a-week player to leave this summer, as he’s not set to be in Daniel Farke’s plans.

Leeds racing for Championship promotion with Sheffield United and Burnley

Some may have thought that automatic promotion from the Championship was all but guaranteed for Leeds after late wins over Sunderland and Sheffield United last month.

However, a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom last time out, coupled with both the Blades and Burnley picking up wins at QPR and Cardiff, has seen Leeds’ lead at the top cut.

Both promotion rivals play before Leeds’ trip to Portsmouth on Sunday as well, meaning Farke’s side could be level on points with Sheffield United and just two ahead of the Clarets, should they both secure wins.

£30m star failed big time at Leeds, now he's outscoring Summerville

Leeds United have been the home to numerous stars, including one player who’s now outscoring Crysencio Summerville.

Despite this, those behind the scenes at Elland Road already have one eye on the summer and have agreed a first senior exit for defender Ramus Kristensen, currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Denmark international is now set to join the Bundesliga side on a permanent transfer, with Leeds accepting an offer from Frankfurt worth an initial £5m which could rise to £6.5m with add-ons.

Another player who departed the club on loan following Leeds’ relegation was Jack Harrison. The winger has spent over 18 months on loan at Everton, where he is on £90,000-a-week.

The Toffees look unlikely to make a move permanent, though, leaving Leeds with a question of what to do with Harrison in the summer.

Talks held for £90k-p/w Leeds player to leave with Kristensen

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, there is a chance that Harrison could leave Leeds and return to the MLS, after a spell with New York City FC when he was a youngster. It is claimed that ‘exploratory conversations with club representatives in the United States are understood to have taken place’, however, no official approaches have been made.

Jack Harrison for Everton

Harrison, who is now 28, is under contract with Leeds until 2028 after signing new terms when the Whites were in the Premier League back in 2023.

The YEP also claim that Harrison is unlikely to be in Farke’s Leeds plans ahead of the 2025/26 season, where they are hoping to be playing Premier League football.

As can be seen, Harrison has not produced much at Goodison Park, contributing just seven goals in more than 60 appearances. He hasn’t registered a goal or an assist in the Premier League during the current campaign, so it’s no surprise that Everton look likely to pass up on their chance to sign the Englishman permanently.

Leeds also have four exciting wingers on their books currently in Dan James, Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani and Wilfried Gnonto, although Solomon is currently on loan from Tottenham.

Selling Harrison and signing Solomon on a full-time deal could be a wise move from the 49ers, with the Israel international having experience in the Premier League and impressing under Farke this season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Roberto Tomas is currently enjoying his third season at La Masia and is considered a huge prospect for the future. During his Infantil A days, he played both as a No.9 and an attacking midfielder, scoring 21 goals in the process.

His performances prompted the coaching staff to promote him directly to Cadet A rather than Cadet B. Although younger than many of his teammates and opponents, he adapted well and was deployed both as a false No.9 and in an attacking midfield role. This season, he has been pulling double duty, playing for Juvenil B as well as stepping in for Cadet A when needed, scoring 10 goals for the former and 12 for the latter.

Luis Enrique, Antonio Conte and the top 10 managerial jobs of the 2024-25 European season – ranked

This has been a year for both the elite tactical masterminds and man-managers, but who achieved the most relative to the resources at their disposal?

So there we have it! The five champions of Europe's major leagues have all been confirmed: Liverpool, Barcelona, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Arne Slot, Hansi Flick, Antonio Conte, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique all made a piece of history at those respective clubs, and each of them now holds a special place in the hearts of supporters as a result.

However, those five men were by no means the only coaches in Europe to impress over the last 12 months. Oliver Glasner, Eddie Howe, Vincenzo Italiano and Sebastian Hoeness ended agonisingly long trophy droughts for Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Bologna and Stuttgart, respectively, as the so-called lesser clubs got one over on the elite for a change in the domestic cups.

Some of the standout managers didn't even lift any silverware, they simply made fans believe again. Nuno Espirito Santo falls into that bracket after bringing Nottingham Forest back into Europe, and so too do Claudio Ranieri and Nico Kovac, who were both tasked with daunting mid-season salvage jobs and ended up exceeding all expectations.

The question is: who should go down as the best manager of the 2024-25 European season? GOAL ranks the top 10 contenders below…

Imago Images10Niko Kovac (Borussia Dortmund)

When Kovac was appointed Borussia Dortmund boss on January 29, the team had slipped to 11th in the Bundesliga table with just seven wins from 19 games, and sat 22 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Bayern Munich. His predecessor, Nuri Sahin, had overseen progress into the Champions League knockout rounds, but the first half of the season was unquestionably a disaster for a club the size of BVB.

The tide did not immediately turn under Kovac, either, as the new manager lost four of his first six league matches in the dugout and a top-four finish faded into the distance. But, crucially, the Croatian then ditched Sahin's 4-2-3-1 formation for a 3-4-3, which made Dortmund far more cohesive as a defensive unit, and results subsequently began to improve.

Changing Dortmund's setup also sparked the forward line into life, with Serhou Guirassy, in particular, going goal crazy. Dortmund won seven and drew one of their final eight Bundesliga fixtures, scoring 26 goals, and clinched fourth place ahead of Freiburg on the final day of the season.

Kovac didn't just pull the club out of a crisis, he turned Dortmund into one of the most effective transition sides in Europe, as we also saw during their run to the Champions League quarter-finals that they can still mix it with Europe's elite. Suddenly, the future looks bright again for the Yellow and Blacks, and, as resurgent BVB forward Karim Adeyemi so eloquently put it, that's all because of the "kick in the ass" Kovac provided.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport9Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest)

What a job Nuno has done at Nottingham Forest! He didn't get enough plaudits for keeping the club in the Premier League after walking into a dire situation midway through the 2023-24 campaign, and most outsiders expected another relegation battle this time around.

But Nuno had a plan for rapid growth and has executed it flawlessly. After strengthening with the summer additions of Nikola Milenkovic, Elliot Anderson and Morato, Forest quickly rose into top-four contention playing an effective brand of counter-attacking football that allowed Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Morgan Gibbs-White to flourish in the final third.

Forest's Champions League bid ran out of steam down the finishing stretch, but a Conference League berth for 2025-26 should not be sniffed at. The City Ground faithful hasn't seen any continental action in 30 years, and Nuno has cemented a place in Forest's Hall of Fame for bringing the team to this point so quickly – even if he ends up leaving amid reports of a breakdown in relations with controversial owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Getty Images Sport8Claudio Ranieri (Roma)

Former Leicester City manager Ranieri's reputation as a miracle-worker precedes him wherever he goes – that's what happens when you guide 1000-1 underdogs to a Premier League title. The Italian also performed the great escape with Cagliari in 2023-24 to end his career on a high, only for him to reverse his retirement decision six months later.

That's because Ranieri's beloved Roma were in dire straits, and he couldn't just sit back and do nothing. He returned to Stadio Olimpico for a third spell in charge in November, at which point the Giallorossi were down in 12th in Serie A, with both Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric paying the ultimate price for club's worst start to a season since 1979.

Bringing Ranieri back felt like an act of desperation at the time, and three losses in his first four games only fuelled that narrative. But he soon started to get the best out of Roma's biggest stars, most notably Mats Hummels, Leandro Paredes, Gianluca Mancini, and Matias Soule, and the team embarked on a thrilling 19-game unbeaten run in Serie A that ran from December 15 to May 12.

Incredibly, Roma went into the last day of the season knowing a top-four finish would be theirs if they beat Torino and Juventus failed to secure a win at Venezia. Ranieri's men did their job, but, in the end, so did Juve to leave the Olimpico faithful deflated. Make no mistake, though, Ranieri is still going back into retirement as a hero; at 73 years old, he defied all the odds again and reminded the entire world of his unparalleled skills as a man motivator.

AFP7Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace)

Glasner made an instant impact at Palace after replacing Roy Hodgson in February of last year, winning seven of his first 13 Premier League games to steer the team to an unlikely 10th-place finish. But then the German saw the core of his team ripped out as Michael Olise, Jordan Ayew, and Joachim Andersen all departed in the summer transfer window.

Palace were able to bring in Eddie Nketiah, Maxence Lacroix, and Ismaila Sarr to fill those positions in time for the new season, but they still plummeted to the bottom of the table after eight matches, and Glasner faced uncomfortable questions over his future. CEO Steve Parish and the rest of the Eagles board resisted the urge to pull the trigger, though, and were soon rewarded for their patience.

After the turn of the year, Palace picked up eight Premier League wins, a total matched only by champions Liverpool, to pull well clear of danger. In fact, Glasner's side weren't too far away from the European spots, which was amazing considering they also put in a herculean effort to reach the FA Cup final, despatching Fulham and Aston Villa along the way.

The Eagles then pulled off one of the competition's greatest-ever upsets in the Wembley showpiece as they downed Manchester City courtesy of a wonderful breakaway goal from Eberechi Eze. Glasner became an instant immortal for delivering Palace's first-ever major trophy, and it could be the start of something very special if he stays for their 2025-26 Europa League campaign, because his team are now a high-octane powerhouse capable of going toe-to-toe with the very best.

Dhaka Division stun defending champions Rangpur; Khulna crush Rajshahi by 400 runs

Dhaka Division stunned defending champions Rangpur Division by beating them by 23 runs in the opening round of this season’s National Cricket League. In a low-scoring tier-1 game at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Anamul Haque’s four-wicket haul on the third afternoon tilted the game Dhaka’s way, as they bowl Rangpur out for 128 runs in their chase of 152.Dhaka managed only 166 in the first innings after being sent in by Rangpur, even as Rony Talukdar hit an unbeaten 102, his 11th first-class century. Apart from Talukdar, only two other Dhaka batters reached double figures. For Rangpur, Nobin Islam picked up his maiden five-wicket haul.In reply, Rangpur scored 238 and took a 72-run lead. Wicketkeeper-batter Mim Mosaddeak top scored with 71, while captain Ariful Haque scored an unbeaten 58. Left-arm quick Salauddin Sakil took four wickets for Dhaka. In their second innings, Taibur Rahman’s 66 kept Dhaka in the game, but Asadullah Galib’s 5 for 68 for Rangpur restricted Dhaka’s lead to 151, which wasn’t too threatening with so much time remaining. However, Rangpur slipped to 44 for 7 in the chase, before Nihaduzzaman’s fighting 56 from No. 8 kept them afloat. He added 75 for the eighth wicket with Sanjit Saha, before Sakil removed Nihaduzzaman and Galib in the space of three deliveries. Rangpur were shortly bowled out for 128.Naeem Islam marked his Dhaka Metropolis debut by reaching his 10,000th first-class run in the course of an 88-run win against Sylhet Division. Naeem moved to Metropolis after having played more than 150 matches for his northern native sides Rangpur and Rajshahi. He top-scored with 65 in the first innings after Sylhet opted to bowl, but Metropolis were bowled out for 243. Abu Jayed, Khaled Ahmed, Sahanur Rahman and Nabil Samad took two wickets each for Sylhet, and then their captain Zakir Hasan’s 15th first-class century gave them an eight-run lead. Left-arm seamer Abu Hider took three wickets for Metropolis.Metropolis managed only 212 while batting again, with medium-pace bowler Rejaur Rahman Raja taking a hat-trick to wrap up the innings. Raja became the second bowler from Sylhet to take a first-class hat-trick, following Enamul Haque Jr in the 2018-19 season. But it was all upended by left-arm spinner Arif Ahmed, whose five-wicket haul cleaned up Sylhet for 116 during their chase of 205. Hider took three more wickets to finish as Player of the Match, having also contributed 34 with the bat in the first innings.Chattogram Division kicked off their NCL tier-2 campaign with an 87-run win over Barisal Division. Having been sent in by Barishal at their home venue, Chattogram banked on 96 from Pinak Ghosh and 94 from Mominul Haque to reach 238. Offspinner Sohag Gazi took 5 for 54 for Barishal.Moin Khan’s 71 from the lower order kept Barishal ticking, but they ended three short in their reply. Chattogram built on that meagre advantage with fifties from Yasir Ali, Shamim Hossain and Nayeem Hasan and reached 308, leaving Barishal 312 to chase. Seamer Kamrul Islam Rabbi took 5 for 64 for Barisal. But Hasan Murad’s four-wicket haul skittled out Barishal for 224 despite Gazi’s 97.In the other tier-2 match, Khulna Division crushed Rajshahi Division by 400 runs at the latter’s home ground. Khulna, who had opted to bat, got 288 in the first innings with fifties from Mohammad Mithun and Afif Hossain. But Rajshahi were then blown away for 81, their fourth-lowest first-class total of all time, as Al-Amin Hossain and Soumya Sarkar took four wickets each for Khulna, thus securing a massive 207-run lead.Khulna chose to bat again rather than enforcing the follow-on, and Mithun struck his 15th first-class century as Khulna declared on 334 for 5. Mithun made an unbeaten 125 off just 149 balls, which included 12 fours and four sixes. Sarkar and Anamul Haque struck fifties, too.Set a mammoth 542 to win, Rajshahi were then bowled out for 141 to end up with their lowes-ever match aggregate of 222. Al-Amin, Ziaur Rahman and Nahidul Islam took two wickets each for Khulna.

SA20 2024 starts on January 10, will clash with Test series in NZ

Top South African players will play the league, meaning Test squad will be without several key players

Firdose Moonda15-Aug-2023The second edition of the SA20 will run from January 10 to February 10, 2024 and will clash with South Africa’s two-Test series in New Zealand which starts with a warm-up match on January 29.Since the SA20 is owned in the majority by Cricket South Africa, players are obliged to fulfil their SA20 franchise contracts ahead of national duty. Therefore, players who are participating in the tournament will not be available for the New Zealand tour. That means South Africa will be without Test captain Temba Bavuma, opening batter Aiden Markram, middle-order players Ryan Rickelton, Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen, allrounder Wiaan Mulder, and their entire frontline attack: Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. All those players have SA20 deals and more could follow after the auction on September 27, leaving South Africa to choose a weakened Test team for the World Test Championship fixtures in New Zealand.Related

SA20 teams given R39.1 million salary purse to build their squads

“Protea players in the SA20 will not be going to New Zealand and that is a directive from CSA,” Pholetsi Moseki, the CSA CEO, told ESPNcricinfo. “But our plans are on track. The auction will be the next milestone and Shukri [Conrad, the Test coach] will then determine player availability for the tour.”Contacted for comment, Conrad said he will “have to put my thinking cap on” as he selects the Test squad while Moseki saw it as “an opportunity to see if the pipeline is pumping.” SA league commissioner Graeme Smith described the clash as “not ideal”, but said the league had been “very clear from the start, in terms of how things were created and structured” and is “focused on making sure we deliver the best four weeks of competition”.To that end, the SA20 follows a more balanced schedule than last season, when it had to vacate Newlands, Boland Park and St George’s Park after two weeks for the Women’s T20 World Cup and then take a 10-day break for an ODI series against England. This season, which begins when defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape taking on Joburg Super Kings in Gqeberha, every franchise will host a home match in the first week. The six franchises each play each other home and away before the knockouts. As ESPNcricinfo had reported earlier, the tournament moves from away from semi-finals in 2024, to three playoffs (an eliminator and two qualifiers) in a knockout structure that mirrors the IPL.The uncluttered fixture list also means that weekday matches will be played as standalone matches and double-headers will take place on Saturdays only. Sunday matches will start at 3pm local time, in order for fans to enjoy a late afternoon’s entertainment before the work week. The SA20 will start three days after India’s all-format tour of South Africa, which ends with the New Year’s Test, and will be played in the prime summer January window for the foreseeable future. It was initially planned that there would be no international fixture clashes with the SA20 but the last edition had to make room for a Covid-19 postponed World Cup Super League series against England. This time around, CSA approached New Zealand about moving the Tests, which were announced in the most recent Future Tours Programme, but have been told there is no room for negotiation.

A £70m star in the making: Spurs hit gold with "incredible" Ange signing

Ange Postecoglou has been in the Tottenham Hotspur hot seat for about a year and a half.

Since taking the job, he’s made the team one of the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League, but while he enjoyed an incredible run at the start of last season, it’s not been so easy since.

For example, he has overseen more losses than wins in the league this year, although now that some of his stars are returning to the team, the results are also starting to improve.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

Moreover, while not every signing has been a hit, many have been, including one player who’s been in fine form this term and has won comparisons to a star worth an enormous sum of money.

Postecoglou's most impactful Spurs signings

While not every addition made by Postecoglou has been a hit at Spurs, he has made more than his fair share of brilliant signings since the summer of 2023, and one of the very best has undoubtedly been Micky van de Ven.

The Dutch international joined the North Londoners from VfL Wolfsburg for around £43m in August 2023, and while he has had several injury problems since, he’s been a revelation when fit.

In all, he’s made 41 appearances for the club, in which he’s scored three goals, provided two assists, set the Premier League sprint record – 37.38km/h – and completed a clean sweep of the Lilywhites’ Player of the Season awards last term.

Another star addition from the same summer has been James Maddison, as while he’s certainly someone who can blow hot and cold at times, he’s managed to rack up a rather impressive haul of 14 goals and 16 assists in 63 games since his £40m move from Leicester City, and thanks to his recent uptick in form, there are now talks about his potential return to the national team squad.

Lastly, while there are other names, one of the stand-out recruits from the summer just gone has been Dominic Solanke, who, in just 29 appearances this season, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

With all that said, there’s another signing made under the Australian’s tenure who is having the season of his life and has since won comparisons to an incredibly valuable player.

The Spurs gem who's a £70m star in the making

While Solanke was doing brilliantly prior to his injury and climbing up the club’s top scorer list for this season, he was still behind one of Postecoglou’s other signings: Brennan Johnson.

In fact, the Welshman, who joined the club for around £47.5m from Nottingham Forest in September 2023, has only further extended his lead atop the club’s goalscoring chart recently.

His brace against Ipswich Town on the weekend takes him to 14 goals in 34 appearances, totalling 2211 minutes, across all competitions this season.

When you add his three assists to that tally, it comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every other game or every 130.05 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, such a great return so far has seen the former Forest ace win comparisons to some of the most exciting players around, including Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

The comparison primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Colombian is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spurs star.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty goals plus assists, shots, passes and crosses into the penalty area, passes blocked, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

While being likened to a winger who’s part of a team that looks set to win the Premier League is already great in and of itself, this comparison also bodes well for the 23-year-old’s future price tag.

For example, Football Transfers value the Liverpool star at up to €86.4m, which comes to about £72m, and if Johnson is so statistically similar to the Colombian, who is to say that he too won’t be worth that much should he keep up his current scoring form?

Ultimately, not everything has worked out for Postecoglou since he joined the club, but one thing the Australian has done is bring in more talented players, with the former Nottingham Forest gem chief among them.
