Arsenal sit second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool – who also have a game in hand. However, Gunners captain Odegaard believes his team still have "another gear" and that he can improve his goal-scoring stats in what remains of this season.

He said, via : “For the team, we’re in a good position. But still I feel like we have another gear, another step that we can take and hopefully we can hit that top form now until the end of the season. It was the same last year. We really hit top form towards the end of the season. Hopefully we can do that again and finish with a good run.

“It’s (goals) been something that I haven’t been good enough with this season. I feel like I’ve been in enough situations and created a lot for others but I haven’t been clinical enough with the finishing. So that’s something that I really want to step up towards the end of the season.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Indeed, Odegaard scored 15 goals in 2022-23 and 11 last season, but has managed just two this term. If Arsenal are finally to end their long drought for a league title, everyone, including the Norwegian, need to raise their game.

Not just Gomes: Man Utd must activate buyback clause to re-sign amazing ace

There’s always a real sense of intrigue when a player chooses to fly the nest at Manchester United, with supporters no doubt torn between wishing the star well, while also hoping that his exit doesn’t come back to bite them.

In the case of Angel Gomes, for instance, the Red Devils will certainly be ruing letting him slip from their grasp back in 2020, with the Englishman leaving on a free after limited game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made just ten first-team appearances for the club in all competitions.

The youngest player to feature for the first team since Duncan Edwards after replacing Wayne Rooney at the age of just 16 and 263 days back in 2017, Gomes has since gone on to flourish in France, via a stint in Portugal, at Ligue 1 side Lille, culminating in a first senior England call-up last month.

Last season in the league, the 24-year-old created 15 ‘big chances’ and provided eight assists from his deep-lying midfield berth, with speculation rife that United are among the clubs who are eyeing a potential move for the diminutive playmaker next summer.

With less than 12 months to run on his existing deal, the 5 foot 6 sensation surely won’t be short of suitors, with the Red Devils plotting a potential Paul Pogba repeat in bringing back an asset they previously let go for nothing.

Paul-Pogba-Man-Utd-France

The one-time Boavista loanee may not be the only asset that INEOS could look to bring back to Old Trafford, however, with there another rising star who could be worthy of a second chance in the near future.

Man Utd have a chance to right a wrong

In cases like Pogba and Gomes, talented youngsters perhaps need to move on from the United bubble in order to flourish, allowing them the chance to gain regular game time away from the intense scrutiny that life in Manchester provides.

There is no harm in then plucking those talents once they have realised their potential elsewhere, however, with the club likely to be keeping a close watch on the likes of Willy Kambwala and Hannibal Mejbri in the coming years – two players who have buyback clauses in the deals that took them to Villarreal and Burnley, respectively.

The same could also be said of a certain Alvaro Fernandez, with the promising Spaniard having made the move to Benfica on an initial £5m deal over the summer after a six-month loan spell – a move that also includes a buyback (as well as a sell-on clause)

The 21-year-old departed after failing to make a first-team appearance for the club, with the towering left-back having arrived from Real Madrid as part of a trio of Spanish imports in the summer of 2020, alongside Marc Jurado (Barcelona) and Alejandro Garnacho (Atletico Madrid).

While Garnacho has since gone on to sparkle, both Jurado and Fernandez have fallen by the wayside, although after a bright start to life in Portugal, a return to United in the near future should be in store to help aid the club’s left-back woes.

Alvaro Fernandez's start at Benfica

Described as a “quality” player with an “amazing engine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time in United’s youth ranks – where he notably made 47 U21 appearances, providing 14 goals and assists – the youngster notably sparkled during the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Preston North End.

That stint at Deepdale saw Fernandez register six assists in 42 games in all competitions as an illustration of his attacking prowess, having been hailed as “immaculate” by then-boss Ryan Lowe.

With Tyrell Malacia subsequently missing the entirety of last season through injury, and with Luke Shaw enduring his own stints on the sidelines, the hope was that Fernandez would come into the first-team picture.

Ultimately, however, he was sent on loan to Granada for the first half of the campaign, before joining his current side on an initial temporary deal in the winter window – even with Sergio Reguilon’s own loan having been cut short in January.

Yet again, United have been forced to start the new campaign without a recognised left-back, while the Spaniard has flourished again in Lisbon, notably averaging 1.8 key passes per game from his six outings in Liga Portugal in 2024/25. Only Amad Diallo (2.4) has bettered that return among those back at United in the Premier League.

He also impressed during his first Champions League start against FK Crvena zvezda last week, providing three key passes from his defensive berth in that 2-1 win, while also completing three of his five crosses.

The Spain U21 international remains rather raw, but at a time when Erik ten Hag’s side are so lacking in that left-sided department – with Harry Amass still also just 17 – he could well have been a worthy part of the Red Devils squad this season.

Thankfully, while the club have let him slip from their grasp, the inclusion of that buyback clause ensures that they could have first dibs over re-signing the 6 foot 1 ace in future, allowing Ten Hag and co the chance to rectify their mistake.

As bad as Romero: Spurs must drop 5/10 ace who was anonymous in the NLD

There is no getting away from it: Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the Premier League season has been nothing short of a disaster.

In four games, Ange Postecoglou’s side have picked up just four points thanks to a draw away to newly promoted Leicester City and a win at home to bottom-of-the-table Everton.

Worse yet, the Australian oversaw his second home defeat in a row to fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday, despite the Gunners missing two of their best players in Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

There were several poor performers on the day for the Lilywhites, and while Cristian Romero has received plenty of warranted flak for his part in the Gunners’ goal, ushered away from proceedings by Gabriel and leaving the Brazilian unmarked, there’s another key starter who looked anonymous for 95 minutes.

Son Heung-min's game vs Arsenal

Yes, while Son Heung-min wasn’t directly at fault for the only goal in the game like the Argentine defender was, he was partly to blame for his side’s blunt attacking display.

Now, the club captain didn’t make any glaring errors in the game, but he didn’t produce any moments of magic or even many genuine chances for his teammates either, which resulted in a rather tepid performance in what should be one of the most exciting games of the season.

This is a sentiment shared by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, who gave the South Korean superstar – and Romero for that matter – a 5/10 on the day, writing that while he ‘teed up Kulusevski for an early chance’ he ultimately ‘struggled to make an impact.’

While potentially harsh, Gold’s assessment of the 32-year-old’s game is corroborated by his statistics, as in his 95 minutes on the pitch, he amassed an expected assists figure of 0.13 and an expected goals figure of 0.02, failed in 50% of his dribbles, played a single key pass, lost the ball ten times and was offside once.

So, while he wasn’t at fault for the goals, he offered practically nothing going forward, so for that reason, and because his minutes should be managed more this season, he should be dropped to the bench for Wednesday’s League Cup game against Coventry City.

Why Wilson Odobert should replace Son

So, Spurs have several wingers at their disposal who could come in for Son off the left, but Ange should look to give Wilson Odobert his third start of the season on Wednesday night.

Now, like most of his teammates, the young Frenchman has been somewhat underwhelming in attack this season and has failed to score or assist a goal, but he should be given time to adjust to the system, and even though he couldn’t make it count on Sunday, he injected some much-needed energy into his side.

Moreover, thanks to his time with Burnley last year, we know what he can do when given a run of games.

For example, despite still being just 18 years old at the start of the 23/24 campaign, the Meaux-born gem was able to score four goals and provide three assists in 33 appearances, which is undeniably impressive considering the Clarets’ form and suggests that in a top side, he might be capable of so much more.

Lastly, if the North Londoners are serious about going far in every competition this year, they will need to manage their first team stars and make use of their squad. So, even though Coventry are a talented team, the former Burnley ace and his fellow prospects like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall should have it in them to get a result against a Championship side.

Ultimately, Romero and his fellow defenders might have been at fault for the goal on Sunday, but Son offered very little going forward, so he should be dropped to allow Odobert the chance to open his Spurs account on Wednesday.

Man Utd academy graduate: 3 realistic free agent signings for Birmingham

Birmingham City have already shown that money is no issue this summer, but with the free agent market still open after the transfer window closed, Football FanCast have looked into three possible free signings to further boost their squad after an impressive start to the campaign.

Birmingham see massive overhaul

Chris Davies and Birmingham are not messing around as they look to ensure instant promotion back to the Championship this season. After breaking the League One transfer record twice, they obliterated it on transfer deadline day to sign Jay Stansfield from Fulham in a deal worth £10m plus bonuses.

He was the last of 17 new faces at St Andrews over the summer, but that upheaval hasn't had a knock-on effect on their performances, with the Blues currently sitting third after four games with three wins and a draw, level on points with the two sides above them.

But despite their lavish spending, there are still a couple of holes in the squad that could do with plugging as they look to sustain their form across a gruelling 46 game season, and we have identified three potential cheap additions that could well make the difference.

Jack Cork

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork.

Birmingham already boast several midfielders in their squad, but the majority have much of their careers ahead of them, while there is a lack of experience in Davies' engine room.

That is an issue that Jack Cork would easily fix, with the now 35-year-old a free agent after being released by Burnley. Unlikely to be able to play twice a week all season given his age, the midfield man would bring plenty of experience at the top level, having represented the Clarets in both the Premier League and the Championship, totting up over 250 appearances for them in the process.

He drew high praise from Sean Dyche back during his time at Burnley, who revealed he thought Cork was a "very good player".

“I looked at him and thought, ‘Well if they don’t want him I certainly think he’s a very, very good player’. Corky wasn’t form related. I’ve always thought he was a very good player down many, many years", the now Everton boss explained.

Available for nothing, he could help guide Davies' young stars back into England's second tier.

Sheyi Ojo

Still just 27-years-old, Sheyi Ojo has not yet delivered on the talent promised during his time at Liverpool, and now finds himself without a club.

The right-winger was released by Cardiff City over the summer, but could be useful squad player for the Blues, with Scott Wright their only recognised right-winger as things stand.

Ojo has made almost 150 Championship appearances during his career to date, alongside spells in Belgium and France, while he also spent a season playing Europa League football. Still in his prime, he could be a savvy pickup for a side in League One.

Brandon Williams

Former Norwich loanee Brandon Williams.

Perhaps something of a longshot, a move to sign former Manchester United academy star Brandon Williams would certainly be in line with Birmingham's recent audacious transfer policy, and could be a low-risk move with plenty of upside.

Comfortable playing at either left-back or right-back, the 24-year-old was released by the Red Devils this summer after failing to impress at either Ipswich Town or Norwich during loan spells.

During his time at Manchester United, he was highlighted for praise by manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, who dubbed him "brave as a lion".

"For me, Brandon was man of the match. He's been fantastic the few games he's played. The boy has no fear, he is as brave as a lion and he got us the win", he explained.

Now a free agent, a move to League One Birmingham could be the perfect place from which to relaunch his stalling career, though having played no lower than the Championship during his career to date it may be a difficult deal to complete.

Spurs could take Maddison to new heights with late move for £50m PL star

After an opening game that didn't go to plan last Monday, Tottenham Hotspur made amends by blowing Everton away at home on Saturday to pick up their first win of the Premier League season.

Ange Postecoglou's side looked incredible going forward and reasonably solid at the back in a performance that should leave fans feeling encouraged about their prospects over the next ten months.

Alongside club captain Son Heung-min, who scored twice, last summer's £40m man, James Maddison, looked excellent in the middle of the park, picking up an assist and reminding people just how good he can be.

However, with the right players around him, he could reach another level and avoid the collapse in form he suffered last season. Interestingly, the club were linked to a player who'd help unlock the Englishman earlier this summer.

James Maddison's season of two halves

Maddison's arrival in North London last summer was greeted by a massive amount of excitement from the fans, and considering he had just produced 19 goal involvements in 32 games for a relegated Leicester City, it was entirely justified.

Moreover, it didn't take long for the former Foxes ace to show just how talented he was, as in his first ten league games for Postecoglou's new-look Spurs side, he scored three goals and provided five assists and looked as if he'd end the season as a nailed on starter for England and as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, in the club's shocking 4-1 loss at home to Chelsea in early November, the Coventry-born dynamo suffered an ankle injury that would see him sidelined until the end of January, and while there was an expectation that he'd pick up where he left off for the Lilywhites, that didn't happen.

In his final 17 league games, the 27-year-old could only muster one goal and four assists, which was a far cry from the form he showed before his injury.

However, in his defence, following that defeat to Chelsea, the team seemed to morph from a lean mean winning machine to one incapable of keeping a clean sheet and one prone to throwing away points, which continued when he came back from injury, making his job far harder than it needed to be.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

So, a new tenacious and hardworking midfield partner could be the perfect signing to make before the window closes to help Maddison maintain his impressive start to the season, and the club don't even have to look that hard to find the perfect candidate, as they were linked with him earlier this month: Joao Gomes.

How Joao Gomes could unlock Maddison

Yes, the midfield signing that could help Maddison play to his best ability this season is Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Gomes, who, according to a report earlier this month, was supposedly 'in the sights' of the club.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes vs Arsenal

That report claimed that if Levy and Co wanted to pursue the Brazilian, they would have to stump up around £50m to secure the 23-year-old's signature, and while that's a lot of money, it would be well spent.

For example, one of Gomes' biggest strengths is that while at his best he is an "all action eight", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, he can also play in the six role if needed, meaning that he would be more than capable of helping out with the defensive work in the middle of the park, thus freeing up the Englishman to focus on happenings at the sharp end of the pitch.

In fact, Mattinson goes on to describe the eight-capped international as a "dog of a ball winner", which makes him sound like the ideal sort of player to ensure Postecoglou's side aren't overrun in midfield, and his underlying numbers only further solidify his defensive attributes.

For example, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, the Rio de Janeiro-born ace sits in the top 1% of midfielders for tackles, the top 2% for tackles won, the top 3% for tackles plus interceptions, and the top 7% for blocks, all per 90.

Lastly, the 5 foot 9 international has been playing in the Premier League for a season and a half now and, as such, is far more experienced than some of the alternative options the club could potentially be looking at, so he should come in and hit the ground running.

Ultimately, Spurs cannot afford for Maddison to have another season in which he falls away in the second half, and one way to ensure that does not happen is to sign a tenacious, hard-working, Premier League-proven eight to play alongside him who can do all the dirty work and in turn, help the club maintain an element of control in matches, and Gomes fits the bill perfectly.

Pedro Neto and Joao Gomes

Therefore, while it would be an expensive transfer to get over the line, Levy and Co should do what they can to bring the Brazilian to N17 before the window slams shut on Friday night.

Watch out Son: Spurs have discussed signing £34m forward before Friday

The experienced international would be an incredible signing.

Sunrisers’ openers Griffith and Grace Scrivens survived a testing powerplay, the former being given a life on 11 when Sparks’ wicketkeeper Chloe Hill failed to cling onto an outside edge off the fiery Izzy Wong. Scrivens too was reprieved on 18, Hill grassing a second chance when standing up to Clare Boycott. The second drop didn’t prove costly, Anisha Patel trapping Scrivens lbw for 26 with the score on 67.Griffith, however, made the most of her life, mixing powerful drives with deft touch to reach 50 in 76 balls and with Alice Macleod lending valuable support, the pair added 77 for the second wicket. At 144 for 1, Sunrisers looked set for a big score, but when Eve Jones removed Griffith, caught at cover, momentum shifted Sparks’ way.Fran Wilson and Naomi Dattani went cheaply, bowled by the impressive Fackrell who would later peg back Kelly Castle’s off-stump. And it needed Macleod’s run-a-ball 46 to get the hosts beyond 200.Chasing 205, Jones and Kelly were quickly into stride, the latter especially driving and pulling powerfully as 50 came up in the 10th over.Jones too looked in the groove and it was something of a surprise when on 31 she drove loosely at Scrivens and was caught at cover.Kelly though motored on to a run-a-ball 50 while debutant Davina Perrin, 15 just two days ago announced herself with a gorgeous straight drive for four.Sunrisers added to their struggles when dropping Kelly twice in successive overs, Castle and Kate Coppack the unlucky bowlers.Coppack bowled the opener soon afterwards when she missed an attempted scoop and a stunning catch at mid-off by Macleod ended Perrin’s promising innings on 20 with 70 still needed. However, Davies steadied any nerves with a mature and increasingly fluent knock, a six and seven fours carrying her to 50 in 57 balls. She holed out with one needed, but Sparks romped home with more than four overs to spare.

"I was ready to give up… I hated the game"

The death of a friend and team-mate made Surrey keeper Steven Davies wonder if he wanted to continue playing

Ed Kemp23-Apr-2013″After the death of Tom Maynard in June last year, Steven Davies suffered from depression. The daily demands of the county game meant there was no escape from the tragedy, and Davies sought help from a specialist, recommended to him by a friend. It helped a bit, but playing cricket no longer felt important, and certainly wasn’t fun. Although his glovework remained competent, Davies’ form with the bat completely disintegrated – having passed 1000 first-class runs in each of the previous three seasons, he managed just 438 in 2012, 104 of which came in one innings against Somerset in May.”The cricket environment was the last place that I wanted to be,” Davies said. “Every time I went to a cricket ground it would remind me of Tom and I didn’t want that. I was out in the middle not really wanting to be there. The county season is relentless and it just kept building up. There was an occasion when we played Notts away [in the Championship in July] where I rang my parents to tell them that I was going to quit, that I’d had enough of cricket. I was ready to give it all up, because I just didn’t see it coming to an end. I was in a bad place, I hated the game.”That call prompted his parents to visit him in Nottingham. Together they talked things through and agreed he would see it through to the end of the season, then take the winter off, and attempt to “find the love again”.”I just couldn’t wait for the last game of the season, just to get away from it,” he said. I’ve always loved playing cricket, so it was a strange feeling, to really hate the game that much. Looking back, I should have taken the break during the season. But I felt I had a responsibility to keep on going to try and look after the younger players that have come into the squad [although only 26, Davies sees himself as an experienced head in the Surrey dressing room]. In the end it didn’t benefit me and it didn’t benefit the team, really.”As well as seeing the specialist, Davies was also on medication, though it gave him headaches and he came off it as soon as he’d got through the county campaign. “I’m not seeing anyone anymore. It was the family time that I needed. I just spent three-and-a-half months with them, forgot about cricket for a while, and that was the best therapy for me. I’m really glad I decided to take the winter off, because there gay people, so it’s just to say that we’re normal people, exactly the same as you. Being in the closet for so long and being in pro sport, I was worried about coming out, and now I have and I’ve seen the impact it’s had on some people. The response I got was amazing. I feel this resource can really change people’s lives, and it could even save a life.”So what now? “Back in love” with cricket, since Christmas, Davies has worked hard to get himself in nick for the season – and an attempt to reaffirm his England credentials. Though he was on the Pakistan tour to the UAE in early 2012, he hasn’t played international cricket since being dropped from the ODI team just before the 2011 World Cup – and this year he’s targeting a return to the one-day set-up.”I just want to focus on getting back to where I was, on having a bloody good year and getting back into the England side. I’m really energised and excited for the year, and I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a good one.”No one would begrudge him. As a person, Davies has already had more to deal with than most cricketers his age. But as a player, the serious stuff could well be yet to come.

Speculation regarding a return to Apple TV+ for AFC Richmond has been raging for some time. Warner Bros executives are among those to have hinted at production starting early in 2025. It has now been confirmed that script writing should start “next year”.

Leading members of the cast and crew have been quick to air their excitement at news of Ted Lasso and Co coming back, with the likes of Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift said to have seen options taken up on their respective contracts.

WHAT PHIL DUNSTER SAID

Phil Dunster, who plays enigmatic striker Jamie Tartt, is yet to discover whether he will be involved in Season 4. He has, however, informed fans that more Lasso escapades are on the way, telling the podcast: “It’s been green-lit to write another series. It’s been announced that series 4 is going to be a thing. There’s been a commission to write the fourth series, whether that ends up being a show, I don't know. I don't know any of that stuff. I don't know if I'll be in it. There are certain members of the cast who have been re-upped, as it were. But yeah, I mean it's pretty good news I think in that it looks like it will happen. Season 4 is going be a thing. They start writing next year, I think. But yeah, other than that I don't really know anything.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Dunster added on the uncertainty surrounding his role: “Well, I'm doing a comedy with Bill Lawrence, who was one of the creators of Ted. So I'm doing that next. That's my next thing over on HBO. So I’m not one of those people who’s been re-upped. But also I say that with total love and acceptance that shows move on and things happen. I think that there was some belief at this time that it's because I had booked something else, that was [the reason] that I wasn't doing it. That wasn't the case.

“I would always pick up that phone and I would always say ‘How high?’ if Jason said ‘jump’. But yeah, so I don't know. Who knows? I think that there is a world where something like that happens. I don't know which direction they're taking the show in, but there's lots of favourites of the characters who will still be in it. ‘We move’, as the kids say these days.”

Imagine him & Rothwell: Leeds must avoid howler selling Farke’s "iron" star

da bet sport: Leeds United completed their second outfield signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week as they confirmed the arrival of Joe Rothwell.

da betano casino: The central midfielder has joined the club on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth, and follows Joe Rodon in signing ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Rothwell was part of the Southampton team that earned promotion out of the Championship, beating Leeds in the play-off final, during a loan spell at St. Mary's during the second half of last term.

The 29-year-old maestro produced four goals in 16 league appearances for the Saints and may look to bring an attacking spark to the squad from midfield.

Leeds must now avoid a big howler during the summer transfer window by ensuring that they do not cash in on Glen Kamara, who could be a dream partner for Rothwell.

Transfer interest in Glen Kamara

Football Insider recently reported that Ligue 1 side Rennes have submitted a contract proposal to the Finland international after talks with his representatives.

The outlet claimed that a transfer to the French team has been gathering 'momentum' after those negotiations between the club and the players.

It also revealed that Leeds are willing to cash in on the former Arsenal youth prospect, but only for a 'significant' fee. It remains to be seen exactly how much they would deem to be a significant amount of money.

The Whites, who reportedly paid Rangers £5m for Kamara last summer, must now fight to keep hold of the Finnish star, as he could thrive alongside Rothwell.

Why Glen Kamara and Joe Rothwell are made for each other

They could be perfect for each other as Daniel Farke's midfield tank has the athleticism and defensive attributes to make up for the Cherries loanee's struggles in those departments.

Meanwhile, Rothwell has the potential to make attacking contributions from a midfield position in a way that Kamara has so far been unable to do in West Yorkshire.

As you can see in the table above, the Englishman lost the majority of his battles on the deck and in the air with Southampton, whilst the Finnish maestro, who ex-boss Neil McCann claimed is "made of iron", won the majority of his duels.

However, Rothwell did score an eye-catching four goals in just 16 games from midfield, starting just four of those matches, whilst Kamara failed to score a single goal.

In the 2021/22 campaign for Blackburn Rovers, the new Leeds signing assisted ten goals, created ten 'big chances', and averaged 1.7 key passes per game in 36 Championship starts, which shows that the potential is also there for him to offer quality as a creator.

These statistics show that the pair could combine to form a fantastic pairing due to Rothwell's ability to make attacking contributions and Kamara's athletic, physical, defensive play, whilst they both retain possession at an exceptional rate with their 92% and 93% pass accuracy respectively.

Therefore, it would be a big howler to cash in on him this summer as the club would be allowing a player with the quality to help their latest signing thrive to depart.
