Scenarios – What do Royals, RCB, CSK and KKR need to do to make the playoffs?

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals returned to winning ways with a spectacular performance against Kolkata Knight Riders after five defeats in their previous six games, but they have little room to relax. If they lose to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, the maximum points they can finish on is 14, which will leave them depending on several results going in their favour to qualify for the playoffs.Though they can still make it with 14 without the help of net run rates (NRR), it is also possible for five other teams to finish on 15 or more points, thus knocking out Royals. Royals have an excellent NRR of 0.633 though – second only to that of Gujarat Titans at present – so that could come in handy if things get tight on points.Related

  • CSK find their new Hussey in fan-favourite Conway

  • It's spin vs spin as KKR visit CSK's den to keep their campaign alive

On the other hand, if they win both games then Royals will almost certainly qualify. That is because their two games are against teams who also need to win all their matches to finish on 16. It is possible that Royals and Mumbai Indians might fight for the fourth spot if Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants finish on more than 16, but in that case Royals’ NRR will certainly trump Mumbai Indians’ (they are currently on -0.117).

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers are in a similar position as Royals in that they need to win all games to finish on 16, but there are a couple of crucial differences: they need to win three on the trot, not two; and their NRR is languishing at -0.345.If Royal Challengers lose on Sunday, they will almost certainly be out even if they win their last two and end up on 14 points. That’s because three teams – Titans, Super Kings, and at least one of Super Giants or Mumbai Indians – will finish on more than 14 points, and Royals’ NRR will ensure they are placed higher too.Even if Royal Challengers win all three, it could still come down to NRRs as six teams – Titans, Super Kings, Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers and Punjab Kings – could all finish on 16 or more points.

Chennai Super Kings

A win against Knight Riders will ensure that Chennai Super Kings enter the playoffs, but it won’t yet confirm a top-two finish, as Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants can get to 17 or more points.Even if they lose on Sunday, Super Kings will get another chance to get to 17 when they play their last game, against Delhi Capitals in Delhi on May 20. However, if they lose both these matches, then they will be at the mercy of other results as four teams can finish on 16 or more points.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Wins in their two remaining games will take Knight Riders to 14, which will still leave them relying on other results. Their best case would be for Titans to win their last two, Royal Challengers to beat Royals and then lose their last two, Super Giants and Royals to lose their last two, and Punjab Kings to lose to Delhi Capitals in their return game on Wednesday. Then Titans, Super Kings and Mumbai Indians will qualify, leaving Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to fight for the fourth spot on 14 points. There isn’t much to choose between their NRRs at the moment (-0.357 for KKR and -0.268 for Punjab Kings) which means Knight Riders will still have to win handsomely to lift their NRR.

Unwanted history brings David Warner, Will Pucovski into the frame for Australia

It’s been 32 years since Australia have been pinned down so expertly by tourists, and their captain wants clearer plans from his batsmen

Daniel Brettig29-Dec-2020Last time Australia stumbled through an entire home Test match without a single batsman passing 50, against the mighty West Indies at the MCG in 1988, the aftermath went down as a seminal moment in the minds of many members of what was then a developing team.Allan Border had led his men to the 1987 World Cup and a Test series win over New Zealand at home the following summer, but a defeat in Pakistan followed by three consecutive thumpings from Viv Richards’ Caribbean side caused plenty of hurt and no little frustration in the home dressing room.None of Australia’s batsmen could build on their starts•Getty ImagesNot unlike the top six harried repeatedly into error by India’s seamers in Adelaide and Melbourne 32 years later, Australia’s batsmen were playing without confidence or system, allowing the visitors to dictate terms. To see this pattern reach such a point at the MCG where no one was able to hang around long enough to pass 50, the then team manager Ian MacDonald chose his time to let Border’s team know exactly what he thought, something recounted some years ago by the late Dean Jones.”Macca came from an AFL background and he was filthy at our insipid, gutless performance. He then gave us a coach’s address of which the great Ron Dale Barassi would have been proud,” Jones wrote in in 2016. “Macca yelled out: ‘Enough is enough. We need to start to throw some punches against these blokes as they are killing you. They are making you look like a bunch of weak pricks. Listen to them next door, just bloody listen.Related

‘They are treating you guys like club cricketers. Now we better get together, stick tough and sort out our own issues or this team will be remembered as the worst and most gutless Australian team of all time! Now let’s stick together and start talking how bloody good we are and not how bloody good they are! Let’s draw a line in the sand here as enough is enough!'”Undoubtedly, the dressing room now occupied by Tim Paine’s XI will be feeling similarly low, having failed completely to counter the plans and spells of the Indians, marshalled so expertly by Ajinkya Rahane. They will now be looking eagerly towards the fitness of David Warner, and the recovery from concussion of Will Pucovski, who looms as a potential option either at the top of the order alongside Warner or in the middle.Either way, the opener Joe Burns looks to be on incredibly shaky ground, while the experiment with Matthew Wade has failed to produce the sorts of tempo-building innings that Australia have come to rely upon from Warner. Paine was clear that the hosts needed to find a better balance between attack and defence after India managed to cut down their scoring avenues for the second consecutive Test series.”That’s the game isn’t it, it’s risk/reward, it’s being clear – I think everyone’s going to do it differently,” Paine said. “Matthew Wade looks like he’s going to sweep, some other guys are going to use their feet. Cameron Green didn’t attack overly today but played really nicely.”Everyone’s got to have their own plan, be clear on it and then have the confidence to go out and execute it. We have if anything been slightly tentative in committing to exactly how we want to play the spin or the fast bowling when they’re attacking our stumps and setting really strong leg-side fields.”Paine denied that either Steven Smith or Marnus Labuschagne have been caught out by India’s planning over many long, Covid-19 affected months leading up to this series, even if few can remember seeing Smith’s rotation of the strike so cut back by the posting of two square legs when the pacemen attack the stumps. Instead, he argued that Smith simply needed to get himself established at the crease in one innings to find the metronomic rhythm that has served him so well in the past.

“We have been slightly tentative in committing to exactly how we want to play the spin or the fast bowling when they’re attacking our stumps and setting really strong leg-side fields”Australia captain Tim Paine

“India are bowling well, they’ve been extremely disciplined, we haven’t been able to get partnerships together, but from what I’ve seen watching say Marnus and Steve Smith in their Test career, this is not the first time teams have targeted their stumps. That happens every single Test match,” Paine said.”These guys are executing it better and someone like Steve in particular hasn’t been able to get in yet. Once he does he’ll find a way, as he always has, and the rest of us will follow suit and need to improve, there’s no doubt about that. But these aren’t plans that we’re encountering for the first time.”For Smith, the key is that he has not been able to play a single long innings for all of 2020, leading him to the worst two Test matches of his career in terms of runs scored, usurping Edgbaston and Trent Bridge in 2015 where his rapid dismissals set England on the course to regaining the Ashes. “At the moment I’m searching for time in the middle; that’s the most important thing for me,” Smith told SEN Radio before play.”When I look at this year, 64 balls [66, during the first ODI] is the longest I’ve spent in the middle during those one-day games. For me, that’s important. I find a lot of rhythm out in the middle. You can bat as much as you want in the nets, but there’s nothing that can replicate what a game can do, so that for me is what I’m searching for at the moment. That can be tough to do, particularly in a Test match when you’ve got some quality bowlers.”This of course will also be a challenge for Warner if he is deemed fit to return from a groin strain, while Pucovski will know that his recent concussion history is likely to see him facing plenty of short balls should he be included for a Test match debut in either of the two remaining matches.”David looks really good from what I’ve seen,” Paine said. “He’s been training this week in the nets and started running a bit between the wickets, so I think the early signs with him are very good for the third Test, which is awesome for us, and Will Pucovski a similar boat, I think he’s not far away.”There’s some return-to-play protocol that he has or needs to tick off, I’m not across it all, but my conversations with Will are that he’s pretty close to a return. My conversations with him are that he does feel okay and he’s excited to come back inside the bubble and prepare.”Either way, the Australians have the chance to redeem themselves over two more matches within this series. Border’s men 32 years ago had already lost the series, but went on to win the fourth Test and draw the fifth, an outcome that Paine undoubtedly would take right now.

Aston Villa ask Barcelona about young full-back but La Liga champions reluctant to let him go

Aston Villa are exploring a move for Barcelona prospect Hector Fort, though the Catalan giants are hesitant about letting him leave.

According to , Villa have approached Barcelona about signing young full-back Fort. The move is driven by manager Unai Emery and sporting director Monchi, who both have a strong track record of targeting Spanish talent. Fort and Emery are also represented by the same agency, potentially making negotiations smoother.

Villa are are looking to reinforce at full-back with Andres Garcia likely to leave after struggling for minutes. However, financial restrictions following a UEFA fine mean any Fort deal would have to be low-cost, possibly a loan. Monchi’s summer spending has been limited to €37 million (£31m/$41m), splashing €30m (£26m/$33m) on striker Evann Guessand and €7m on Turkish centre-back Yasin Ozcan, who was immediately loaned to Anderlecht. Barcelona, meanwhile, value Fort highly and see him as part of their future plans, making them unwilling to sanction a permanent sale.

The 19-year-old has drawn interest from several clubs, including Paris FC and Mallorca, though the latter’s offer was not convincing. The Catalan giants would consider a loan or structured transfer keeping a high percentage of his rights and a buy-back clause, in line with their recent approach to youth talent. For Fort, guaranteed playing time will be key in deciding his next move.

Fort is expected to make a decision on his future next week, weighing offers from across Europe. If Villa push ahead, they will need to convince Barcelona of a deal that preserves the Catalan club’s long-term stake in the player.

India's stars descend upon Chennai as training begins for bumper Test season

Rohit and Kohli faced net bowlers on spin-friendly surfaces as India begin their run of ten Tests with two against Bangladesh next week

Takeaways: No Shami, Sarfaraz gets retained

India’s preparation for the long Test season ahead began on Friday with some new faces saying hello and some old ones saying, miss me? Virat Kohli is back on the red-ball grind for the first time in nearly nine months. Rishabh Pant looks ready to pick up where his Test career left off two years ago. And Gautam Gambhir was there overseeing it all as the team gears up to face Bangladesh (two Tests in September), New Zealand (three Tests in October) and Australia (five Tests in November-January).India’s Test squad arrived in Chennai on Thursday and took to training in batches. The captain Rohit Sharma addressed them in a huddle and was one of the first to get out there and take a hit. He was joined by Kohli as the two of them faced a series of net bowlers on specially prepared pitches at either end of the square in the MA Chidambaram Stadium.Related

One had a black-soil base, with so many footmarks around the full and good length area that it almost looked scorched. The other had a red-soil base and it bore marks of selective watering; the short and good length area was pristine but everything fuller than that was roughed up. The centre wicket, though, was cordoned off and it seemed to contain a fair bit of grass. In previous years, India have tried to simulate fast-bowler friendly conditions in home Test matches to prepare for significant away tours.Rohit and Kohli worked alongside their top-order team-mates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who will be coming into the new season with plenty of confidence after coming-of-age performances against England earlier this year. All four of them alternated between the two nets and were fed a diet rich in left-arm spin. Tamil Nadu’s Ajith Ram and M Siddharth kept wheeling away in an attempt to mirror threat that Shakib Al Hasan will pose in the coming weeks. Varun Chakravarthy was there too, and so was Himanshu Singh, a 21-year-old offspinner from Mumbai who seems to have borrowed R Ashwin’s bowling action.

Soon it was time for India’s bowlers to have their fun and Jasprit Bumrah, who last played for India in the T20 World Cup final in June, did not hold back. Even if it is his second skill, he was majestic charging out of the crease to loft balls straight down the ground. In the afternoon, he indulged in some light fitness work and then chatted up the bowling coach Morne Morkel. The rookie fast bowlers had to clear a sterner workload. Yash Dayal, who is being groomed with an eye towards the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later in the year, had a productive session under the eyes of both Morkel and Gambhir. Aside from his ability to provide a left-arm angle, his effort ball has a habit of hitting fairly high on the bat.Pant provided one of the more thrilling moments of Friday’s session when he took Dayal on, after being beaten, with a remarkably casual pick-up shot off his hips. When he was in a life-threatening car crash in December 2022, the wicketkeeper was one of India’s leading batters in Test cricket. Although he has already made his return to the limited-overs format, and was part of the side that won the T20 World Cup, it will be a big moment, next Thursday, when he is back out there playing red-ball cricket. The first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai on September 19 is one of five home games that India have in their run into the World Test Championship final in June 2025. They are No. 1 on the points table currently and will be looking for somewhere in the region of five more wins from the 10 remaining games they have on their calendar to make a third successive final appearance.

Real Madrid in advanced contract talks to fend off Man Utd approach for star

Real Madrid are now in advanced contract talks with a star player to try and fend off Manchester United’s recent approach, according to a new report.

Balancing incomings and outgoings the order of the day at Old Trafford

As of now, it has been a rather quiet start to the transfer window for the Red Devils, as they have just completed one bit of transfer business, and that was the signing of Matheus Cunha. More arrivals are expected however, with Bryan Mbeumo heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, and now United are said to be confident in beating Tottenham to his signature.

United are also being linked with players who can improve them in other aspects of the team. They are seriously interested in signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and have now added Marco Carnesecchi to their list of options to replace Andre Onana in goal. However, these purchases may have to be put on hold until the club moves some players out the door.

Alejandro Garnacho is one whose time at the club appears to be up, as United are now prepared to sell the Argentine. The Red Devils are looking to get at least £50 million for the attacker this summer. Chelsea were linked with a move for Garnacho back in January, and they are believed to be still interested in a deal now. Meanwhile, Aston Villa have also joined the race to sign Garnacho, as he may be seen as a replacement for Marcus Rashford, who has now returned to Old Trafford.

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho

Erik ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen have also been linked with a move for the United man, and while their interest is genuine, it is a deal that is unlikely given finances and the fact that Garnacho’s preference is to remain in the Premier League.

Man Utd make approach for Brahim Diaz

Given the Red Devils are willing to sell Garnacho, they have been on the lookout for replacements, and according to a report from Spain, Man United have made an approach to sign Brahim Diaz from Real Madrid.

However, Fabrizio Romano has since revealed Real Madrid are now in advanced contract talks with the forward to fend off the interest from United and others. Indeed, Arsenal also joined the Red Devils in making an enquiry, but it seems the playmaker has made his mind up and will stay put for the forseeable future.

Diaz, who has been dubbed an “astonishing” talent by journalist Mina Rzouki, has been at Real Madrid since January 2019, when he joined the club from United’s arch-rivals Manchester City. The Morocco international has had two separate spells on loan at AC Milan since moving to Spain, but in the last two seasons he has become an important member of the Real Madrid squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo even called Mourinho the best manager he has ever worked with back in 2015, saying: “I would put him at the top, I always say that. He’s a good coach, he did many good things and won many trophies for other clubs.”

During his career, the Portuguese tactician has entertained the footballing world with some brilliant quotes and touchline moments, and he has also struck gold on numerous players in the transfer market.

Jose Mourinho’s best signings in pictures

From defensive stars at Chelsea in Ashley Cole and Petr Cech to attacking icons in Samuel Eto’o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, there have been plenty of high-profile names Mourinho has persuaded to join him down the years.

However, one of the near-misses Mourinho had in the early days of his coaching career was with Thierry Henry, who would go on to become an Arsenal icon.

Now Arsenal’s record goalscorer after a memorable eight-year spell in north London, Henry was signed from Juventus in 1999.

He won two Premier League titles at Highbury and lifted the FA Cup on three occasions, going down as one of the best players the top flight has ever seen.

Juventus only had the French forward for a matter of months before selling him to the Gunners, and they signed him from AS Monaco.

It could have been so much different, though, with Mourinho revealing in 2014 that during his time as Barcelona assistant manager to Sir Bobby Robson, the Catalan giants were an “inch” away from signing Henry from Monaco.

Henry would come up against Mourinho on numerous occasions but never worked under the Portuguese boss, who called Henry “one of the all-time greats”.

Worcestershire secured their second successive win in the Vitality County Championship to bolster their hopes of retaining Division One status as they overcame bottom-placed Kent by eight wickets at Visit Worcestershire New Road.Tom Taylor and Joe Leach picked up the final two Kent wickets this morning to leave Worcestershire, who were promoted last summer, with a modest victory target of 101.Although Worcestershire openers Gareth Roderick and Jake Libby fell cheaply, Kashif Ali (52 not out) and Rob Jones (23 not out) saw their side over the finishing line with an unbroken stand of 69.Worcestershire’s 23-point haul followed on from victory in their previous game against Durham at the Seat Unique Riverside, albeit nearly seven weeks ago. They were in the ascendancy for the bulk of the game once Kent had lost 10 wickets for 98 runs in their first innings after being 73 for 0 at one stage. It was two of their players returning from lengthy spells out through injury who made significant contributions.Joe Leach, who is retiring at the end of the season, rolled back the years with a six-wicket haul in Kent’s first innings his first appearance for three months after a recurrence of a knee problem.Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira has been troubled by a shoulder injury for a year but he returned after having extensive rehab during the past month to score 97 from 90 balls and change the momentum of the game in Worcestershire’s favour.Gareth Roderick, with a half century and seven catches behind the stumps, Rob Jones and Ethan Brookes also produced key roles with the bat while Tom Taylor bowled well throughout and deserved a more tangible reward than his five wickets in the game.Kent are now facing an uphill battle to maintain their top flight status after suffering their sixth defeat in 10 games. The big plus point for them was the stunning form with the bat of Tawanda Muyeye who hit a half century and a career best 211.Kent resumed on 353 for 8 – an overall lead of 76 after the last over dismissal of Muyeye yesterday evening.Akeem Jordan, who had picked up five first-innings wickets on his Championship debut, cover drove Taylor for four.Taylor continued his impressive form with the ball demonstrated throughout the game and went past the outside edge on several occasions. He claimed his fourth wicket when Jordan’s off stump was sent cartwheeling out of the ground after he attempted a drive.Leach wrapped up the winnings when George Garrett (6) pushed forward and Gareth Roderick held onto a low chance away to his left.It was Roderick’s fourth catch of the innings and seventh of a game where he has gone past 100 dismissals for Worcestershire.Jordan struck an early blow for Kent when Worcestershire set off in pursuit of their modest target in holding onto a return catch from Roderick.Jake Libby then shouldered arms and was bowled by Garrett at 33 for 2 and rain caused a 40 minute delay after lunch and the loss of 10 overs. But Kashif was soon into his stride with a succession of boundaries to banish any fears of a late twist in the outcome of the match. He twice cut on loan Alfie Ogborne for four and turned the same bowler off his legs to the ropes.A slash to third man off Ogborne brought Kashif his 50 from 67 balls with 10 fours and clinched the victory.

History beckons for Anderson as England eye future

Big picture: Anderson enters the end-game

It’s been an emotional week already for the grand old men of British sport. At Wimbledon on Thursday, Andy Murray unleashed the waterworks as he bade farewell to Centre Court, with a final acceptance that his flesh was now too weak to sustain his indomitable spirit.By contrast, that same afternoon at Saint Vulbas, and then at Silverstone three days after that, Mark Cavendish and Lewis Hamilton proved what a champion’s mindset can still achieve when the fates finally decree that you have suffered purgatory for long enough.Related

  • Strauss: Next Ashes 'too far' for Anderson (but he should receive a knighthood)

  • Stokes: England must build a team that can win in Australia

  • Stokes' brave calls and bowling return herald start of England's evolution

  • From haircuts to sledging – Anderson's other 'highlights'

And now, we roll through to Lord’s on Wednesday, where another immoveable constant of the British sporting summer will begin his own five-day farewell. As with each of the three men mentioned above, James Anderson has never known when to quit, and were it not for the march of time, he’d have no reason to do so. “I’ve not really got a choice, have I?” he demurred, when asked if he was at peace with the decision to pension him off after this, his 188th Test – even after last week’s stellar haul of 7 for 35 for Lancashire at Southport. But, as Anderson himself might remember from the circumstances of his own England debut – on this very ground 21 years and a handful of weeks ago – international sport has, at some point, to return to being a young man’s game. Back then, it was Andrew Caddick who never played for his country again, even after claiming ten wickets in England’s previous Test at Sydney in January 2003. If opportunity doesn’t knock at some point for a new generation, then stagnation and frustration become the only true measures of progress. That’s not quite where England find themselves after a torrid winter tour of India. But, in the wake of their 2-2 Ashes draw and a careless share of the spoils in New Zealand in February, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum find themselves in unusually urgent need of a series win – a strange state of affairs for a team whose initial success was largely down to their disregard for the end-game.James Anderson and Ben Stokes in their Test whites•PA Photos/Getty Images

Hence their changing of the guard, with Bazball’s original pin-up, Jonny Bairstow, being forced to bow to the reality of his fading returns, and Ben Foakes dispatched for his inability to hit the top-notes of aggression that the team ethos demands. Stuart Broad has also sauntered off the stage, 12 months yet only one home Test ago, meaning that the future will be upon this England team almost before it has had time to take stock. What can West Indies do to knock that future off its stride? Potentially, more than many other teams might muster. For if England’s approach, in essence, has been about an overdose of good vibes, then they are coming up against a team with a proven ability to raise their own game against these particular opponents. As the current holders of the Richards-Botham Trophy, West Indies have not lost a home series to England in two decades and counting, and if the challenge that awaits them in inclement English weather is likely to be somewhat tougher, then they come armed with a core of significant senior campaigners, not least among them the returning former captain Jason Holder, and a fast-bowling contingent that would be the envy of many of their Test opponents.Either way, West Indies are not letting the sentiment of the occasion deflect them from their mission, with more than one player expressing their intention to “ruin” Anderson’s farewell. Hopefully the weather doesn’t get there first in the course of an unsettled forecast for the week ahead. There’ll be enough moisture doing the rounds at Lord’s by the time he’s bowled his last.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In the spotlight: Gus Atkinson and Shamar Joseph

Yeah, yeah, so there’s really only one fast bowler on anyone’s lips right now, but seeing as Anderson loathes the spotlight, it makes sense to pass it over to two of the newest kids on the Test block.Gus Atkinson has been England’s coming man for the best part of a year already, but after drinks-carrying roles on two senior tours of India – before Christmas for that dismal World Cup campaign and after Christmas for a marginally less dispiriting 4-1 Test defeat – Lord’s will serve as the grand unveiling of a quick who has got a lot of informed onlookers very excited indeed. Over and above his smooth attributes as a 90mph fast bowler, Atkinson’s appetite for the big stage would appear to mark him out. His best displays to date have come when there’s been the most to prove, not least a high-octane duel with Jos Buttler in last year’s Hundred. Dillon Pennington and Matthew Potts are waiting in the wings for when Anderson has bowled his last, but Atkinson has been handed first dibs of the new era.Shamar Joseph prepares to bowl in the nets•Getty Images

If Atkinson can make half the impact that Shamar Joseph managed in his maiden Test series, then England will have been extraordinarily well served. After five wickets on debut in a spirited personal display in Adelaide, no performance of recent vintage came close to matching the raw, rapid raucousness with which Joseph followed up in Brisbane, as Australia were scattered to the four corners of their former fortress at the Gabba. His figures of 7 for 68 in 11.5 brutally direct overs were capped by the flattening of Josh Hazlewood’s off stump and a victory gallop for the ages. It’ll be a different level of expectation now, of course – and a wicketless one-off appearance for Lucknow in this year’s IPL was early evidence that his spells won’t all be as straightforwardly joyous. Nevertheless, he arrives as a serious prong in a serious pace attack, and England will be forewarned.

Team news: England ring the changes

No Bairstow, no Foakes, no Tom Hartley, no Mark Wood. Only two of those names are likely to feature again for England as Bazball 2.0 prepares to be unleashed. Instead, re-enter Harry Brook at No. 5, back in situ after missing the India tour due to the death of his grandmother, and welcome aboard the Surrey pairing of Atkinson and Jamie Smith, whose credentials have been bigged up ever since Rob Key witnessed his astonishingly rapid hundred for England Lions in Sri Lanka two winters ago. He does not keep wicket for his county – awkwardly, the man he has replaced has that honour. But then, neither does Shoaib Bashir command a first-team place at Somerset. England are more excited about the ceiling of such players’ potentials, rather than the facts of their current professional status. Mind you, the opposite holds true for the returning Chris Woakes, the reigning Compton-Miller medallist after his heroics in last summer’s Ashes. He’s no more a long-term pick than Anderson, but he does command an average of 11.33 in five previous Tests at Lord’s. Seeing as England haven’t won a full series since 2022, getting that W on the board is still a priority.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Gus Atkinson, 10 Shoaib Bashir, 11 James AndersonThe sad absence of Kemar Roach, who sustained a knee injury on county duty with Surrey, hasn’t dented the quiet self-belief of a West Indies team that may prove to be overly reliant on Kraigg Brathwaite’s obduracy at the top, but certainly possess more than enough bowling tools to give Stokes’ batters a serious run for their money. The challenge, as so often in recent encounters, comes in the batting. With Mikyle Louis confirmed for a debut at the top of the order – the first player from St Kitts to win a Test cap for West Indies – four of the top six will have played nine Tests between them. Gudakesh Motie has edged out Kevin Sinclair for the solitary spinner’s berth, with Motie’s recent success against England’s batters in white-ball cricket potentially the clincher.Kraigg Brathwaite looks on during West Indies practice•Getty Images

Pitch and conditions: Cold and damp is the order of the day

The weather promises to be cold, intermittently showery and distinctly underwhelming. All of which augurs pretty well for the quick bowlers on display, given the old cliché of Lord’s being a venue where you look up, not down. Even by the old ground’s flat-decked reputation, however, this season has been taking the Michael – as Glamorgan’s Sam Northeast can attest after overhauling Graham Gooch’s legendary 333 in April, the previous highest score ever made in NW8. Jayden Seales had a similarly brutal run-out for Sussex against Middlesex at Lord’s in May, when a total of 18 wickets fell in four days.

Stats and trivia: Anderson eyeing his final place in history

  • Anderson, currently on 700 Test wickets, needs nine in the match to overhaul Shane Warne’s mark of 708, and move into second place on the all-time Test wicket-taker’s list, behind Muthiah Muralidaran (800).
  • Stokes, who is expected to be back to full bowling fitness after undergoing knee surgery in November, needs two more wickets to reach 200 in Tests, after spending 17 Tests and nigh on two years in the 190s.
  • Joshua da Silva, West Indies’ keeper, needs eight more runs to reach 1000 in Tests.
  • Despite being the current holders of the Richards-Botham Trophy, West Indies have lost each of their last seven Test series in England, dating back to 2000, and have not won a series in the country since 1988.
  • In the past decade, however, the rivalry has been especially intense at home and away. Since 2015, both teams have won six and lost six out of 15 matches, with a win apiece on their last two visits to England in 2017 and 2020.

Quotes

“This week will all be about Jimmy, and rightly so. But I can tell you that his main focus is about going out there, taking wickets and trying to win this game for England. I’m sure when we’re done here this week, that’s when everything else will take over. But he’s desperate to go out there and put in a winning performance for England.”
Ben Stokes on Anderson’s swansong“It’s a young group, especially the batsmen, they have a lot of time to learn because obviously playing Test cricket it takes a while to really understand. You’re always learning on the job, but it’s a very decent team, for sure.”

Better signing than Vardy: Leeds make move for "extraordinary" £13m CF

It seems like Leeds United will look to sign a new striker this summer, their first back in the Premier League after a two-season absence. There have already been strong links to two English top-flight stalwarts.

One of those is Callum Wilson, the Newcastle United striker who will leave on a free at the end of the season. The other is legendary Leicester City star Jamie Vardy, who will also depart the King Power Stadium at the end of the campaign when his contract expires.

Part of Leeds’ transfer policy at this stage of the summer, just days out from the transfer window opening, is clear: sign a striker. Well, perhaps their best option is actually a man whom they would have to buy, rather than sign on a free transfer.

The latest on Leeds’ hunt for a striker

Leeds clearly want to sign a new centre-forward in the coming weeks, and if a player on a free transfer is not the answer, perhaps Kasper Dolberg is the man they will look to bring in from Belgian side Anderlecht.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a reports – via website Voetbalkrant, the Whites hold a strong interest in signing Dolberg this summer. They are believed to have ‘reported to Brussels for Dolberg’, suggesting they have made an ‘approach’ for the Denmark international.

It is thought that Leeds ‘see the Dane as the ideal reinforcement for the attack’, and they seem like they will really push to sign him this summer.

Kasper Dolberg for Denmark.

However, the Yorkshire outfit ‘be able to meet Anderlecht’s demands’, which was reportedly a fee of £13m by Florian Plettenberg back in November 2024.

Why Dolberg would be a good signing

At 27 years of age, Dolberg is about to enter his prime, having been something of a journeyman, playing across Europe for the likes of Ajax and Sevilla. Now settled at Anderlecht, the Denmark international has had a strong season.

Kasper Dolberg

In 44 games across all competitions, the Ajax academy graduate has managed to find the back of the net 24 times and grab two assists, too. His season has been hampered somewhat by a couple of injury issues, too.

In the Jupiler Pro League, the top flight in Belgium, it has been a very successful individual campaign for the striker. He has 14 goals and an assist in 22 games, having played 1685 minutes. That gives him an average of 112 minutes per goal and assist. The highlight of that was surely a hat-trick against Cercle Brugge.

It will be interesting to see who Leeds decide to try and sign, if it comes down to Dolberg or the hugely experienced Vardy. The Whites’ reported target has now famously made 500 appearances for Leicester and reached 200 goals for the club at the weekend, his final home game.

It has been a strong season for Vardy in a Leicester shirt, despite what was a poor year for the Foxes. He managed nine goals and four assists in 35 Premier League games, impressive given his side’s form and the fact he is banging the goals in at 38 years of age.

Yet, it has been a season where Dolberg’s numbers in front of goal are actually better than Vardy’s, suggesting Leeds should in fact look to bring him in this summer. This is a signing the Yorkshire outfit need to get right, not least as he is an “extraordinary talent”, as hailed by John Steen Olsen.

Well, judging by some of the underlying numbers on FBref, perhaps the Dane should be the man Leeds go for. For example, he averages 0.75 goals and 0.38 goals per shot on target per 90 minutes compared to Vardy’s 0.29 goals per game and 0.35 goals per shot on target.

Whatever Leeds decide to do will be fascinating, but for just £13m, perhaps Dolberg is the man they should sign. He has had a better season than Vardy, and the underlying numbers reinforce that. As Jurgen Klopp once said, he is a “fantastic” striker.

With age on his side too, it seems a signing that makes sense for Leeds. He could well be a striker who can find the back of the net enough to keep them in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest now "ready" to make move for "talented" £17m Milan star

da brwin: Nottingham Forest are “ready” to make their move for an England international in the summer transfer window, according to a new transfer claim.

Damaging draw for Nottingham Forest as Marinakis takes centre stage

da blaze casino: Nuno Espirito Santo’s side suffered a poor afternoon at the office on Sunday, drawing 2-2 at home to already-relegated Leicester City in the Premier League, affecting their Champions League qualification hopes badly.

Amid the disappointment, Forest continue to be linked with potential additions in the summer window, but the quality of their signings is likely to be affected by which European competition they qualify for next season, something owner Evangelos Marinakis is all too aware of.

Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah has been linked with a move to the City Ground at the end of the season, with the 22-year-old struggling for regular playing time this season, and unlikely to oust Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate any time soon. He could be an exciting young option with a bright future in the game.

Forest are also believed to be considering a move for Manchester City attacking midfielder James McAtee, with the Englishman in a similar situation to Quansah, in terms of not being a key starter for one of the biggest teams in the country.

Nottingham Forest "ready" to sign Loftus-Cheek

According to MilanLive [via Sport Witness], Nottingham Forest are “ready” to move for AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer, and could pay just £17m for his services.

The 29-year-old could leave the Serie A giants at the end of the season, following an injury-plagued campaign, though Fulham and West Ham are also mentioned as possible destinations. Meanwhile, Roma’s “excellent” relationship with Milan could give them the edge in the race to snap him up.

Loftus-Cheek could be an interesting option for Forest this summer, with the former Chelsea man a 10-cap England international who appeared for the Three Lions at the 2018 World Cup, playing four times. He is one of the best dribblers in his position in Europe, ranking in the 92nd percentile for progressive carries by central midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues.

The midfielder has now racked up 66 appearances in a Milan shirt, scoring 10 goals – it would be more if it weren’t for injury problems – and Owen Hargreaves has spoken of his admiration for him.

The Tricky Trees could land an exciting target.

Loftus-Cheek only has two years remaining on his current Milan deal, so they seem happy to cash in this summer, and he would be a shrewd addition for Forest, adding experience and physicality in the middle of the park, and not at an extortionate price.
