Berta has prepared Arsenal bid for "dominant" attacking gem likened to Neymar

Arsenal have prepared an offer to sign a “dominant” attacking gem who’s drawn comparisons with Brazil legend Neymar, with sporting director Andrea Berta already having a fee in mind to put forward.

Arsenal targeting two wingers and a striker this summer

Berta, who’s set to work in tandem on the club’s recruitment with manager Mikel Arteta, arrives at N5 with a glowing reputation after 12 successful years at Atlético Madrid.

The 53-year-old was responsible for key transfer deals at the Wanda Metropolitano, including the signings of Jan Oblak, Marcos Llorente, Rodri, Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suárez, Yannick Carrasco and noteworthy names, with supporters now hoping he can replicate his excellent pieces of business in north London.

Arsenal’s board are set to back Berta with a significant transfer kitty this summer, which GiveMeSport estimates could be up to £300 million on as many as seven major signings before the beginning of 2025/2026.

Three items on their agenda include the potential acquisitions of a left-winger, right-winger and striker.

Arsenal have already held talks with the representatives of Nico Williams, who’s expected to leave Athletic Bilbao this summer, while it is also believed that they’re in ongoing communication with Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman’s agents as well.

Arsenal have also been told the price for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to Fabrizio Romano, with Berta sent a “clear” message in recent days/weeks that the Sweden international will cost around £60 million.

It is pretty evident that a new attacker or two will be coming to the Emirates Stadium, and it is now believed Berta has his eyes firmly on a rising star in Brazil.

Arsenal prepare bid for Atlético Mineiro starlet Gabriel Veneno

According to journalist Lucas Tanaka, that man is teenage forward Gabriel Veneno, who is earning quite the reputation in South America.

The 15-year-old right-winger has even drawn comparisons to Neymar due to his dribbling ability, with Future Ballers on X also branding Veneno a “dominant force” in one-v-one situations and an exceptional dribbler.

Tanaka believes Arsenal already have an offer prepared for Veneno, but he cannot reveal the exact nature of his bid for now.

“Here’s some exclusive information on Gabriel Veneno. The jewel of Atletico is considered a jewel by the people who follow the youth team,” said Tanaka on YouTube.

“Remember he’s in the under-16s, he’ll be 16 in July. He was called up to the Brazilian national team under-16s last year. If I’m not mistaken he’s an attacking midfielder who likes to play on the right wing, pulling inside.

“Gabriel Veneno is being watched and approached by a big European club, Arsenal.

“Arsenal in England is keeping an eye on Gabriel Veneno. I already have the value of the possible offer that they’re thinking of sending in the middle of the year, but I can’t give you the value yet.”

Country of £18k-p/w Celtic "beast" confirm injury in concern for Rodgers

A Celtic “beast” has reportedly suffered an injury blow, with his national team confirming as much at the beginning of the international break.

Celtic players off on international duty after Rangers defeat

The Hoops suffered the disappointing of losing to Rangers last Sunday, with Brendan Rodgers’ side enduring a 3-2 defeat at Parkhead. The hosts were never at their best, failing to build an even bigger leader at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

On the plus side, Celtic are still in complete command of the title race, sitting 13 points clear ahead of their rivals, so there is no need for an overreaction to the loss.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

While some supporters would like the Hoops to have another game as quickly as possible, they will now have to wait until March 29th for their next outing, with Rodgers’ men hosting Hearts in the league.

For a big chunk of Celtic’s squad, domestic commitments now make way for international duty, as they look to impress for their respective countries for the next week or so. It hasn’t been an ideal start to the break for the Scottish Premiership leaders, however, with worrying injury news emerging.

Celtic suffer injury blow to attacking "beast"

On Tuesday, the Japanese FA confirmed that Daizen Maeda suffered an injury in Celtic’s defeat to Rangers last weekend, meaning he could miss Japan’s clash with Bahrain on Thursday in what will be a concern for Rodgers.

“Daizen Maeda did not train with the main group after suffering from a bruised leg and undertook his own individual programme. He will be assessed before the game.”

Maeda is such a key man for Celtic, with his pace and direct nature making him a vital figure, so Rodgers will be sweating about his availability after the internationals.

Rodgers must finally axe Kuhn by unleashing Celtic star who's "on fire"

Given Nicolas Kühn’s recent dip in form, should Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers start his “on fire” winger instead after the international break?

The Japanese speedster has scored 13 goals in 23 league starts this season, also chipping in with four in the Champions League and an incredible six in just three appearances and five in two in the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup respectively. Meanwhile, former coach John Hutchinson has said of him:

“I have never seen a more physical player, in terms of speed and repeat sprinting, than Daizen. Daizen is a physical beast. You’d have no issues sending him anywhere in Europe because it won’t be a problem to him. He’s a machine.”

If anything, this injury may actually have been timed well, or at least Rodgers will hope so, in terms of the international action only just getting underway, giving the £18,000-a-week Celtic ace time to get back fully fit for the Hearts game.

Thankfully, the Hoops have a massive lead in the title race, not to mention having plenty of other options, but it is always better for them to have him available.

Four golden ducks in an innings

Also, how many times has a wicket fallen off the first ball of a Test?

Steven Lynch15-Aug-2017How many people have hit their maiden first-class century in a Test, as Hardik Pandya did in Pallekele? asked Chandrakant Sarwate from India

Hardik Pandya, whose previous highest score was 90, was the 41st batsman – the 14th in the current century – to score his maiden first-class hundred in a Test match. The first instance was in the very first Test match of all, by Charles Bannerman for Australia against England in Melbourne in 1876-77. Bannerman’s famous 165 retired hurt in that game was actually his only century in a career of 44 first-class matches. The list includes four other Indians: Vijay Manjrekar (1952), Kapil Dev (1978-79), Ajay Ratra (2001-02) and Harbhajan Singh (2010-11, in his 88th Test). How many wicketkeepers have been out for 99 in a Test, as Jonny Bairstow was? asked Michael Ward from England

Jonny Bairstow’s important 99 at Old Trafford was only the third such score by a wicketkeeper in a Test. The first to fall for 99 was Brendon McCullum, for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in Napier in 2004-05. He was followed by MS Dhoni, for India against England in Nagpur in 2012-13. Bairstow was the unlucky 13th batsman to be out for 99 in a Test for England, but the first since Kevin Pietersen against Bangladesh in 2009-10. Mike Atherton and MJK Smith were both dismissed for 99 twice, while Geoff Boycott – who was out for 99 against West Indies in Port-of-Spain in 1973-74 – was also stranded on 99 not out against Australia in Perth in 1979-80. Alex Tudor, against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 1999, is the only other man to make 99 not out in a Test innings for England.Who was the first man to play 100 ODIs? asked Wayne Johnstone from Australia

The first man to reach the milestone of 100 one-day international appearances was Australia’s Allan Border, in January 1985. The record he overhauled shortly before was held by another Australian, Rod Marsh, with 92. Border was also the first to play 200 ODIs, reaching the mark in February 1990, at which point Viv Richards had played 177 and Desmond Haynes 171. First to 300 was Mohammad Azharuddin, in September 1998; he had gone past Border’s final tally of 273 earlier that year. And the first of the four men so far to reach 400 was Sanath Jayasuriya, in October 2007. At that time Sachin Tendulkar had played 397 ODIs; he went past Jayasuriya in February 2011, and finished with 463 one-day caps.Hands up if you think he’s out for a golden duck•Getty ImagesThere were four first-ball ducks in South Africa’s second innings at The Oval – was this a record? asked George Symons from South Africa

South Africa’s disappointing second innings in the third Test at The Oval was indeed the first in Tests to contain four golden ducks – Faf du Plessis, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel all perished first ball. With the proviso that there are several matches for which we don’t have complete ball-by-ball records, there appear to have been 12 previous instances of an innings containing three golden ducks, most recently by India (Abhinav Mukund, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar) against England at Trent Bridge in 2011. The first such instance was in an Ashes Test at Edgbaston in 1902, when the Australian trio of Warwick Armstrong, Ernie Jones and Bill Howell were all out first ball. In Melbourne in 2003-04, Sachin Tendulkar, Parthiv Patel and Ajit Agarkar were all out first ball, while Zaheer Khan also faced just one ball, but finished with 0 not out.I know that the first delivery of a Test match was hit for six only once, but how many times has the first ball of a Test match resulted in a wicket, and which team has done it most often? asked Allan Alexander from the United States

There have now been 30 instances of a batsman being dismissed by the first ball of a Test, most recently when Mitchell Starc dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne in the second Test in Galle in August 2016. West Indies have done it most often – eight times, helped by the fact that Pedro Collins three times dismissed Bangladesh’s Hannan Sarkar with the opening delivery of a match. Australia have started five different Tests with a first-ball wicket, England four, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa three, and Bangladesh one.Just in case anyone doesn’t know about the first-ball six you mention, it was struck by Chris Gayle off Bangladesh’s Sohag Gazi in Mirpur in 2012-13. It was actually Gazi’s first ball in Test cricket!Leave your questions in the comments section

Man City to splash the cash: Huge transfer spree planned as Pep Guardiola bids to rebuild at Etihad Stadium after losing Premier League title to Liverpool

Man City struggled in the season after slow summerAl-Mubarak announces plans to splash the cashPlanning to make signings quickly before Club World CupFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City suffered their first trophyless season since the 2016-17 campaign, which was Pep Guardiola's first season in charge at Etihad Stadium. The disappointing 2024-25 season came on the back of their rather inactive summer transfer window in 2024, which saw them only make two moves: re-signing Ilkay Gundogan and signing Savinho from their sister club, Troyes.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Al-Mubarak has now claimed that the club made a mistake by not being aggressive last summer, as he blamed the lack of squad rejuvenation for the failures of the 2024-25 season. The City chairman also warned other Premier League clubs that his side are ready to splash the cash this summer as they look to help Guardiola fight to get their Premier League title back from Liverpool.

AFPWHAT AL-MUBARAK SAID

Speaking in an address to the City fans, Al-Mubarak said: "We will be back and the aim is to build something even better. History is great — but then there’s a new page to write. The future is about what we can do together. How can we keep winning? We’ve been working and preparing for next season since January. We’ll take all the good things and the not-so-good things from this season, learn from it, improve and get better.”

On this season's disappointments: “The beauty of football is that there’s always a new season. And today we get to turn this page. The season that just passed is behind us. The records are there. What we achieved and what we haven’t. And it’s basically black and white. Many circumstances just didn’t work our way.

“Last summer, we probably should have been more aggressive in some changes we needed to do. We didn’t do that and it ended up costing us. We already started that team rebuild in January."

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

The eight-time Premier League champions will be keen on showing the world that they are down but not out as of yet, as they plan to make signings before the start of the Club World Cup in June. Al-Mubarak added: “We’ve identified who the targets are, in what positions, and have clear No. 1 and No. 2 options. We’ll go about our business, and it will be very clear, very swift. Our objective is to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.”

Quetta Gladiators rope in Shaun Tait as bowling coach

Tait’s time with Pakistan earlier means he has worked with most of the bowlers he will now take charge of

Danyal Rasool17-Dec-2023Days after appointing former Australian allrounder Shane Watson as head coach, Quetta Gladiators have announced Shaun Tait as bowling coach. Tait, who was Pakistan’s fast bowling coach until earlier this year, will take up the role ahead of the ninth season of the PSL.”I’d like to thank Nadeem Omar (Quetta Gladiators owner) who trusted me with the bowling group,” Tait said in an official statement, “including Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, and Mohammad Amir. Some great talent there to work with alongside the great Shane Watson.”Tait’s time with Pakistan means he has worked with most of the bowlers he will now take charge of. During his stint, he was vocal in his criticism of any attempts to get Pakistan’s express pace bowlers to maintain high workloads. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, he had said there was “no way – no way – express pace bowlers can currently play all three formats consistently.”In the same interview, he was effusive in his praise for Hasnain – currently recuperating from an ankle injury – who falls under his wing once more. “Hasnain has got the ability to bowl proper rapid, but there’s no doubt [there’s an air of vulnerability to him],” he said at the time. “My input with Hasnain is purely about just using his athleticism. Getting that grunt as a fast bowler and being angry. Just running in fast and feeling good.”The announcement marks Gladiators’ push towards an overhaul of the coaching staff as they look to break out of a rut that has seen them miss the playoffs for four successive seasons. Gladiators were the most consistent franchise of the PSL during its first four editions, when they reached the final three times, and also won the title in 2019.Tait was appointed Pakistan coach in February 2022 on a one-year contract. While there was uncertainty on whether it was a rolling contract, and he was understood to be keen on an extension, the contract was not renewed. The PSL starts on February 8, and runs till March 24.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma earn maiden call up to India T20I squad

Hardik Pandya captains the side which will play five games against West Indies in August, with Suryakumar Yadav named his deputy

Alagappan Muthu05-Jul-2023Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma’s stellar performances in the IPL have paved a way to the Indian T20I squad with the two quick-scoring left-handers chosen as part of a 15-member squad to play against West Indies from August 3. It is their first call-up to the senior side in the shortest format.Hardik Pandya captains the team which will play five games in the Caribbean and the USA, with Suryakumar Yadav named his deputy. Some of the other heavy hitters are missing though. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t represented India in T20Is since their semi-final exit at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja, the hero of the 2023 IPL final, was absent as well. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has not been picked either.ESPNcricinfo LtdThis is the first squad chosen by the newly installed men’s senior selection panel and they appear to have bought into the idea of needing batters who can go big from ball one, starting with the two rookies. Jaiswal has already developed a reputation as a powerplay smasher, with a particular emphasis on taking apart the first over of the innings. Varma, who had a fan in Mahela Jayawardene even before he faced a ball of IPL cricket, has only grown in stature since then. The middle-order batter averages almost 40 from 47 T20s, without compromising on his strike rate, which is a healthy 142.54.Shubman Gill and Hardik might act as failsafes if things go wrong but Ajit Agarkar, the new chief of selectors, and his panel have put their trust in a line-up that hits boundaries first and asks questions later. Rinku Singh, who became a revelation by playing that very same brand of cricket in this year’s IPL, remains on the outside. This despite the squad looking light on finishers with Hardik being the only recognised option.India last played T20Is in February 2023, against New Zealand, and seven members of that squad have been sidelined. They are Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar and Jitesh Sharma, who has been left out without getting a go in the XI.Related

Axar Patel ticks the fingerspin requirement. The seam attack looks a bit inexperienced but it does contain variety with Arshdeep Singh providing swing and seam from a left-arm angle and Umran Malik providing raw pace. Mukesh Kumar retains his place in the T20I team as well having earlier secured his first-ever Test call-up. Avesh Khan, who played the last of his 15 T20Is in August 2022, has been given another shot. IPL winner Deepak Chahar, who returned from injury to play the latter half of the campaign for Chennai Super Kings, wasn’t picked.Sanju Samson, who is part of the ODI squad on tour, and Ishan Kishan are the wicketkeeping options.India’s tour of West Indies begins with the first of two Tests in Dominica on July 12.
