Ajinkya Rahane in pain upon picking up an injury during the game against Sunrisers•BCCI

Ajinkya Rahane will play no further part in IPL 2022, a hamstring injury he picked up during Kolkata Knight Riders’ previous match, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, putting him out of action for the time being. The injury also puts him in doubt for the Ranji Trophy knockouts, starting June 4 in Bengaluru.Rahane had one of his brighter starts in the game against Sunrisers, scoring 28 in 24 balls with three sixes, but looked in discomfort while taking singles. He was seen clutching his hamstring and the team physio also went out to tend to him at the end of the powerplay overs. He continued to hobble, though, before being dismissed in the eighth over by Umran Malik.Related

Scenarios: It will be tough for KKR to make the playoffs

On the whole, it hasn’t been a particularly happy IPL 2022 for Rahane, who finished with 133 runs from seven innings at an average of 19.00 and strike rate of 103.90.His best innings came in Knight Riders’ first game, the tournament-opener against Chennai Super Kings, when he scored 44 in 34 balls in a six-wicket win for his team. He played the next four matches, but returns of 9, 12, 7 and 8 meant a month-long layoff, as Knight Riders shuffled through their opening options, before returning to the Rahane-Venkatesh Iyer combination against Mumbai Indians on May 9.Venkatesh (43) and Rahane (25) put together a 60-run first-wicket partnership to help Knight Riders win by 52 runs. The win over Sunrisers in the next match, the last Knight Riders have played so far, have kept them in the race for the playoffs, but only just.In Rahane’s absence, Knight Riders have options in Aaron Finch, B Indrajith, Sam Billings and Sunil Narine, all of whom opened during the period Rahane was dropped, to partner Venkatesh at the top.Knight Riders had earlier lost the services of Pat Cummins, who flew back home to Australia before their last game because of a hip injury. Around the start of the tournament, Alex Hales had opted out citing bubble fatigue, which led to Knight Riders roping in Finch as a replacement.Knight Riders’ next game, their last in the IPL 2022 league stage, will be against Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday at DY Patil Stadium.

Powell shows his destructive hitting abilities yet again

Three weeks ago, Rovman Powell found himself amid pickle he had nothing to do with. There were whispers of favouritism when the team management played him ahead of Odean Smith during the third T20I against England. As the whispers got louder, Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, and Ricky Skeritt, the CWI president, had to step in and issue statements.Smith had played the first two T20Is of the five-match series. He bowled one over in the first T20I and was not called on to bowl in the second. While batting, he wasn’t needed in the first T20I in a nine-wicket win and made 7 in the second T20I. In the third, West Indies strengthened their batting by replacing Smith with Powell, who went on to smash 107 off 53 balls in a high-scoring win.The win brought to the fore Powell’s destructive hitting abilities, yet again. Powell has been around in international cricket for five years, and while such instances have become quite common in the CPL, he hasn’t been able to replicate it at the highest level consistently. On Wednesday against India, Powell’s clean ball-striking on the face of a high asking rate, and his clear thinking in lining up bowlers brought West Indies within two blows of victory. With 23 needed off four balls, he launched two towering sixes to keep West Indies alive. From behind the stumps, Rishabh Pant, who will captain Powell at Delhi Capitals in the IPL, watched in awe. The second of those was a 102-metre straight hit. Powell was distraught when he couldn’t connect the third off a dipping slower one. He finished 68 not out off 36 balls in the end. That West Indies came as close was because of his century stand with Nicholas Pooran.”He (Powell) was phenomenal today, eh? I thought the partnership between him and Pooran almost got us over the line,” captain Kieron Pollard said later. “Sometimes that is what is absent from the guys: trying to bat and bat deep as possible. I’m pleased, pleased not with the result but with the guys, how they continued their consistency. Nicholas getting another half-century, Powell – two half-centuries in four games. So we’re a work in progress.”West Indies began slowly, managing just four fours in a powerplay score of 41 for 1. And when they finished, despite Powell’s blistering knock, there was a sense that they had left themselves with a little too much to do in the end, without being able to properly utilise Pollard, Smith, Roston Chase and Romario Shepherd’s batting abilities.”We could look at different ways at how we could’ve got the eight runs, but when you look at it, they have quality opening bowlers,” Pollard reasoned when asked about the slow start. “The ball is zipping around both sides. Even when we bowled, the ball was moving around. Sometimes you have to respect the bowlers where respect is due, and then try and take it from there. Forty-odd in the powerplay, nine wickets in the hunt, you try to go quicker in the middle. But we can look at many different ways how we could’ve got eight runs.”Powell, a man of few words, spoke of the disappointment of not carrying his team over the line. He touched upon the slow start, but backed himself to play his shots, both against pace and spin. Powell’s clean striking comes from having a stable base. No premeditation, no attempts to be cheeky. He sees the ball and swings it to the T. Like a golfer. He prefers hitting straight. This is a reason why at one stage Rohit Sharma had positioned long-off straighter. Yet, the sheer muscle in a flat-batted hit beat Venkatesh Iyer there.Powell knows he is unconventional but doesn’t back down from his methods that have brought him much success. So what if they didn’t have Andre Russell? Powell brought out similar strokes and intimidated the bowlers. At one point, India’s spinners were involved in a huge debate over field placements. As the final overs approached, India needed to speed up their over rate or run the risk of having just four fielders outside the ring to defend. Powell wasn’t thinking of any of this. He was thinking only sixes, like he showed in the final over against Harshal Patel. The disappointment of not finishing the job, he said, hurt.”I think it was a pretty decent innings, I did the hard yards in the early parts to get myself in,” Powell said. I tried to carry it over, but it won’t go down as a special innings because we didn’t win, it was important for us to be 1-1 going into Sunday. “The discussion between me and Pooran was very simple. We have to try our best to carry on till the end, we needed a partnership. We didn’t have plans to target any specific bowlers. All of them are good bowlers. We just had to back ourselves to take down any bowler. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t cross the line tonight.”

Cost £24.5m: Orta endured Leeds nightmare with flop who’s now a free agent

Leeds United dipped into the market during the recent summer transfer window to bolster their squad with a host of new additions for Daniel Farke.

Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Isaac Schmidt, Joe Rothwell, Joe Rodon, Jayden Bogle, Alex Cairns, and Ao Tanaka were all snapped up by the Whites.

The West Yorkshire side, who lost Georginio Rutter, Glen Kamara, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville, have made those moves in the hope that they will contribute to a promotion-winning season this term.

Leeds last won promotion from the Championship in the 2019/20 campaign and one of Victor Orta's signings that year – Jean-Kevin Augustin – turned out to be a significant flop.

Jean-Kevin Augustin's Leeds career

The Whites got to the January transfer window of that season and decided that they wanted to add more firepower to the group to ensure that they finished the job and secured a place in the Premier League.

Orta eventually finalised an expensive deal to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make it permanent for £18m in the summer if they were promoted.

The Championship side, who went on to win the title, also had to cover his wages during that loan spell, which were reportedly in excess of £75k-per-week.

Unfortunately, though, Augustin fell out of favour under Marcelo Bielsa fairly quickly and only made three league appearances, totalling 48 minutes of action.

Despite the team winning the division and earning promotion to the Premier League, Leeds pulled out of their £18m 'obligation' to sign him permanently.

Fifa, having been contacted by Leipzig, then ordered them to pay £24.5m for the striker, due to the £18m fee and his proposed five-year contract on £93k-per-week, which would make him the current top earner at Elland Road.

The Whites had attempted to appeal the decision but eventually opted to withdraw their protestations earlier this year, meaning that they had to spend £24.5m on a loan player they did not sign permanently.

Where Jean-Kevin Augustin is now

Augustin, who turned 27 this summer, is currently a free agent after being released by Swiss Super League giants Basel at the end of last season.

The French attacker played 11 times for Nantes after his nightmare spell in England before completing a move to Basel for the 2022/23 campaign.

He scored eight goals in 51 appearances for the Swiss outfit and missed a whopping 26 matches through injury across his two seasons in Switzerland, which may be why it has been a struggle for him to find a new club.

Augustin, who had scored 20 goals in 67 games for Leipzig before his loan move to Leeds, was a big nightmare for Orta and the Whites for a multitude of reasons.

Not only did they end up paying a lot of money for a player they did not sign permanently but he was also not good enough for Bielsa to utilise him regularly in the Championship.

Leeds messed up selling "unplayable" ace who's now worth more than Ramazani

The Whites even tried to re-sign the exciting attacker this summer.

This suggests that Orta did not pick the right player to sign to suit what the Argentine boss needed in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, and that ended up being an incredibly costly error by the Spanish sporting director.

He’s won the Premier League: West Ham could sign instant Rodriguez upgrade

One area West Ham have already bolstered ahead of Julen Lopetegui's first season in charge is the midfield department, bringing Guido Rodriguez in on a free transfer.

In Lopetegui's system, the need for comfortability on the ball is apparent, and West Ham have done their best to address that this window in the defensive line, and adding Rodriguez in midfield. Having midfielders that can affect the game both offensively and defensively is important, as they can join both first phase build up, and last phase attacks.

guido-rodriguez-real-betis

Rodriguez made 29 appearances in all competitions last season for Real Betis, scoring two goals, providing one assist, and contributing to eight clean sheets in his 2,241 minutes played.

West Ham to sign another midfielder?

According to Fabrizio Romano West Ham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of ex-Chelsea midfielder, N’Golo Kante, amid recent links. The Frenchman currently earns over £400k-per-week in Saudi Arabia, which West Ham wouldn't be able to replicate.

France midfielder N'Golo Kante

Atlético Madrid has also shown an interest in recent days, with Romano reporting that Al-Ittihad's stance remains the same, "not for sale".

Kante made 44 appearances for Al Ittihad last season in all competitions, scoring four goals, providing six assists, and contributing to 15 clean sheets in his 3,822 minutes played.

Kante vs Rodriguez comparison

The 33-year-old Kante and 29-year-old Rodriguez would both bring a wealth of experience to this West Ham side, having both captained their sides at one stage last season.

Of course, one thing Kante has over Rodriguez is Premier League experience, having played the majority of his career in the league, winning multiple league titles and individual honours throughout 227 outings.

Kante made his last Premier League appearance on the 5th June 2023, providing an assist in a 3-1 victory for Chelsea over Bournemouth. Despite only managing ten games in that season, some of Kante's per 90 numbers were still brilliant.

It's important to note, Kante's stats above are based on 772 minutes of football in the 2022/23 season. However, the stats do not seem to be skewed compared to his prior season at Chelsea, where he completed 2,546 minutes and achieved better per 90 metrics in many areas.

Once described as "Yaya Toure and Claude Makelele rolled into one" by Wayne Rooney, you can definitely see elements of both in this game and in the metrics. Averaging 3.86 progressive carries per 90, adding that thrust from midfield as Toure did.

But also, his 8.82 ball recoveries per 90, 2.50 tackles per 90, and 1.71 blocks, show his ability to consistently complete defensive actions, protecting his teams' backline and covering ground like no other.

As good as Rodriguez is, actually ranking fairly closely to Kante in some metrics (especially defensively). the France star would offer an unbelievable dynamic to the Hammers midfield, being able to progress the ball via his passing and carrying, but also protecting that defence and mopping things up in transition.

Shubham Arora, Rishi Dhawan power Himachal Pradesh to maiden Vijay Hazare title

Dinesh Karthik’s century took Tamil Nadu to 314, but HP never wavered in their chase

Hemant Brar26-Dec-2021Wicketkeeper-opener Shubham Arora’s unbeaten 136 off 131 balls paved the way for Himachal Pradesh’s maiden Vijay Hazare title as they beat Tamil Nadu by 11 runs via the VJD method at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Chasing 315, Himachal needed 16 from 15 balls with six wickets in hand when bad light stopped play.Left-hander Arora was brisk right from the start. While Tamil Nadu’s spinners struck back with three wickets after a rapid start, Arora found an ally in Amit Kumar. The two put together 148 off 150 balls for the fourth wicket, ensuring the asking rate never went out of hand. When B Aparajith dismissed Amit for a 79-ball 74, Himachal needed 71 from 8.5 overs. That brought captain Rishi Dhawan to the crease, with the stage set for his strokeplay. His quickfire 42 not out off 23 balls meant Tamil Nadu didn’t have an opening. Arora, who struck 13 fours and a six in his maiden List A hundred, was named Player of the Match.Earlier, Dinesh Karthik’s 116 off 103 balls, studded with eight fours and seven sixes, had lifted Tamil Nadu to 314 but in the end, it didn’t prove to be enough. After winning the toss, Dhawan cited moisture in the surface as a reason behind bowling first. On a gloomy morning, he expected the fresh pitch to help his seamers early on.Vinay Galetiya proved his captain right when he breached Aparajith’s defence with the one that kept coming in with the angle. Shortly afterwards, Dhawan himself dealt Tamil Nadu a blow and N Jagadeesan caught behind with his first ball of the day. With the sun not yet out and the ball hooping around, Tamil Nadu promoted lower-order batters R Sai Kishore and M Ashwin to No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. The two added 17 for the third wicket in almost six overs, adding 17 before Kishore edged Pankaj Jaswal to first slip.Ashwin fell soon after, becoming Dhawan’s second victim. That left Tamil Nadu 40 for 4 in the 15th over but by now the sun had come out and they had two main batters, Karthik and B Indrajith, in the middle.Tamil Nadu knew they needed to up the scoring rate and the first signs of that came from Karthik. In the 21st over, he stepped out against Galetiya and hit him over long-on. Two balls later, he slog-swept him over deep square leg for his second six before repeating the shot in the bowler’s next over for the same result. It was yet another sweep – this time off left-arm spinner Akash Vasisht for four – that brought up Karthik’s half-century, off 67 balls. Himachal could have sent him back when he was on 53 but Arora put down the chance off Jaswal.Indrajith, who was playing second fiddle until then, also opened up. With a flurry of boundaries, he reached his half-century off just 57 balls despite being on 27 off 44 balls at one stage. At the other end, Karthik struck 6, 4, 6 off consecutive Jaswal deliveries and moved closer to his hundred. On 96, he offered Himachal another chance when he ended up top-edging a lap sweep off left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar, but short third man grassed the opportunity.Karthik brought up his century off 96 balls but Indrajith fell for 80 off 71. But their 202-run partnership off just 164 balls, followed by Shahrukh Khan’s 42 off 21, gave Tamil Nadu a formidable total even though they were all out in 49.4 overs.Himachal started their chase in a positive manner, with Prashant Chopra and Arora adding 60 in just 8.5 overs. Seeing his seamers going for runs, Vijay Shankar turned to spin, and Kishore didn’t take long to strike, castling Chopra for 21. In the next over, Washington Sundar bowled Digvijay Rangi for nought to make it 61 for 2.Arora, meanwhile, brought up his half-century, while Nikhil Gangta hit a couple of sixes to keep the scorecard ticking. However, their stand was cut short by Ashwin, who had Gangta holing out for a 23-ball 18.Arora and Amit kept Himachal afloat and took the side to 150 in the 26th over. When the boundaries dried up, the duo ran hard between the wickets. As a result, without taking any real risks, they brought down the equation to 142 required from the last 20 overs with seven wickets in hand.Amit reached his fifty off 57 balls; two overs later, Arora brought up his hundred off 95 balls. After reaching the landmark, Arora hit Aparajith for a straight hit to bring the target under 100.Tamil Nadu had a chance to break the stand in the 38th over when both batters found themselves near the striker’s end after a mix-up. Vijay, though, failed to collect the ball, allowing Arora to trace back his steps. Arora was batting on 112 at that time.Aparajith finally broke through with Amit’s wicket, trapping him lbw when the batter tried to swipe one fine, but Dhawan slogged the bowler over deep midwicket on the second ball he faced to ease off the pressure. Then with an array of cut shots, he found successive boundaries against both Ashwin and Kishore. An over later, the required rate had plunged to almost run a ball.Arora gave Tamil Nadu another chance in the 47th over but the mid-off fielder put down the catch, and when play was stopped, Himachal were comfortably ahead of the VJD target.

Leicester table fresh £21m bid for "fantastic" ace they’re pushing to sign

Hoping to land their biggest deal of the summer transfer window so far, Leicester City have reportedly tabled a fresh £21m bid to sign a Serie A star for Steve Cooper.

Leicester City transfer news

The Foxes have created some much-needed positive headlines in recent weeks following a disastrous start to the summer, which saw manager Enzo Maresca and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall complete moves to Chelsea. Since then, Steve Cooper has arrived alongside four fresh faces, with those at the King Power hoping to build a squad capable of avoiding Premier League relegation in their first season back in the top flight.

Imagine him next to Ndidi: Leicester plot move for "fabulous" PL midfielder

Steve Cooper would love to have this new signing at his disposal next season at Leicester City.

ByKelan Sarson Jul 19, 2024

More arrivals could yet be on their way. Reports have linked the likes of Alexis Saelemaekers and Richard Rios with moves to Leicester in recent days, with the Foxes looking to use the next month to add further additions. The Championship winners do have to be careful on that front given that they've already run into trouble with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules once and face potential sanctions.

Nonetheless, those potential sanctions are seemingly not set to stand in the way of one big-money move this summer. According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Leicester have tabled a fresh £21m bid to sign Matias Soule from Juventus and are pushing to agree a deal for the young winger next week.

The Foxes' interest in the Serie A star is an open secret these days, and their £21m move would be their most expensive yet this summer, not to mention a statement of intent ahead of their Premier League return. That said, even if it is their biggest move, it remains to be seen whether Juventus will deem their £21m bid enough to show Soule the door next week.

Still just 21 years old, the Argentinian would undoubtedly be an impressive coup.

"Fantastic" Soule can replace Dewsbury-Hall spark

Following Dewsbury-Hall's exit, welcoming a player who can replicate the Englishman's impressive output and creative spark should be at the top of Leicester's priority list this summer – and that should align with their ambitions to sign Soule.

The Juventus gem enjoyed an excellent season out on loan at Frosinone last term, providing the bright spark in a campaign to otherwise forget for the relegated Serie A side. Following a "fantastic start", as described by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Soule only got better, ending the season with 11 goals and 3 assists in all competitions.

A player who still has plenty more to offer, Soule would quickly become a vital part of Cooper's side if he completes a summer switch to Leicester. For just £21m, he may even be looked at as one of the bargains of the window if he hits the ground running in the Premier League.

Southampton could land their next Walcott in move for “explosive” gem

da leao: Southampton have a number of young gems at their disposal next season that could star in the Premier League, based off pre-season showings so far from the Saints.

da bwin: New centre-back recruit Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough United shone when Russell Martin's men took on tough Ligue 1 opponents Montpellier recently, as the highly regarded defender picked out Tyler Dibling with a superb long-range pass to fire home on the day.

Martin might not be done there when it comes to bedding in some more top talents for the future into his new-look squad for the Premier League though, with this dangerous attacker – who has also been tipped for great things – rumoured to be relocating to St. Mary's on loan.

Southampton interested in deal for young Premier League ace

A report by the Daily Mail suggests that Liverpool will allow young hotshot Ben Doak to move to a loan club this summer, with Southampton's ears reportedly perking up at the prospect of a deal.

It will be up to the raw Scotsman whether he fancies a switch to the South Coast or whoever shows a keen interest in his services, however, as he weighs up his first-team chances at Anfield this coming campaign under new boss Arne Slot.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

Minutes have come his way this pre-season, but it would be unrealistic for the promising 18-year-old to expect first-team action week in week out for the Reds, especially in the competitive nature of the Premier League near the very top.

Therefore, this move could suit all parties, but Leicester City are also interested as a fellow newly promoted club.

Seriously impressing those on Merseyside at youth level, Doak's moment to shine in the men's game could come this season at St. Mary's, with the potential for him to explode into life like Theo Walcott managed for the Saints once upon a time.

How Doak could become Southampton's next Walcott

Just watching the clip above again, Doak's electric burst of pace is very reminiscent of when Walcott used to rampage forward during the early stages of his fledging career, before losing steam as his career went on.

Still, before he became a household name for the likes of Arsenal, Walcott was a wide-eyed youngster trying to make the cut on the South Coast and was gifted his debut when he was just 16 years of age by then Southampton boss Harry Redknapp in 2005.

Walcott would never look back after being given his big break, netting four goals from 21 league games during his first season in the senior mix, and Doak will look to take the first-team by storm in a similar manner if he joins Martin's group, based off his promising numbers above in and around the youth structure at the Reds.

Doak has been gifted ten first-team chances already at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp taking a particular shine to the "explosive" gem, as he has been described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Ben Doak

One showing against Toulouse last season during Liverpool's Europa League journey saw Doak show spurts of his raw quality, completing three successful dribbles despite only being on the pitch for one half, alongside winning five duels as a tenacious and energetic presence.

With the Saints also lacking down the right wing in terms of squad depth currently, the addition of the Liverpool youngster on loan would be a smart bit of business.

Former Southampton winger Theo Walcott.

Southampton could even look back on this buy as the South Coast club having a key part to play in Doak's early footballing education, like Walcott before him, before he was then catapulted into stardom down the line.
