Broad dropped, Tendulkar caught

ESPNcricinfo presents the plays of the day from the opening day in Kolkata

George Dobell in Kolkata05-Dec-2012Omission of the day
England’s decision to prefer Steven Finn over Stuart Broad for this Test might mark a watershed moment in the careers of both men. Not only was it the first time that Finn, at 23 the coming force in England’s fast bowling, was preferred to Broad, but it was the first time that Broad had been dropped since 2008 when, under the captaincy of Kevin Pietersen, he was omitted for the Test in Chennai. For England’s Twenty20 captain and the vice-captain of this tour it marks an abrupt moment of clarity in a career that had, at one stage, seemed destined for greater things.Mix-up of the day
Batting had looked relatively comfortable in the morning session. India’s openers appeared to have seen off the new ball and were on the brink of a fifty partnership when Virender Sehwag clipped one off his toes. Having run a comfortable two, he embarked on a third run only to find that his partner, Gautam Gambhir, had remained rooted at the other end and was watching the ball. Sehwag, despite being around two thirds of the way down the pitch, was forced to turn in hope of regaining his ground but was well beaten by a strong throw. If India would rue the self-inflicted injury, England could also congratulate themselves on some committed fielding. Samit Patel, not renowned as one of the better athletes in the side, produced a long run and diving save to stop the ball going to the boundary, while Finn, backing him up, produced the hard, accurate throw to Matt Prior to complete the run-out.Milestone of the day
The shot may have been unobtrusive, merely a flick into the leg side for a single off Monty Panesar, but when Sachin Tendulkar scored his second run he became the first man to reach 34,000 runs in international cricket. Coming into this match with 15,562 runs in Test cricket, 18,426 in ODIs and a token 10 in T20Is, Tendulkar has now scored nearly 7,000 more runs than Ricky Ponting, who is second in the combined table of all international runs. Ponting scored 27,483. Tendulkar also later became just the second man, after Brian Lara, to pass 2,500 Test runs in Tests against two teams, in both cases Australia and England. Whatever his recent trials and tribulations, those statistics underlined Tendulkar’s immense achievements over more than 20 years. It is hard to believe anyone will ever overhaul such a record.Decision of the day
India had lost three wickets for 48 runs by the time that Yuvraj Singh came to the crease. At 136 for 4, England sensed blood and India were in danger of failing to make use of winning another important toss. Before he had scored, Yuvraj was trapped on the front pad by one that swung back into him from James Anderson. Umpire Rod Tucker turned down England’s appeal, perhaps believing that the batsman was hit outside the line, though replays suggested that Yuvraj could count himself fortunate to survive. He survived another huge leg before shout when he was on one, this time off Graeme Swann, just a few minutes later. Had either decision gone against India, they would have been five down with fewer than 140 on the board. As it was the fifth-wicket pair of Yuvraj and Tendulkar added 79 runs to lead India to safer ground.Key moment of the day
For much of Tendulkar’s innings, batting had been a real struggle. As he passed 50, however, he began to rediscover his fluency and produced one vintage drive through extra cover off Panesar that suggested he could build his side a strong position in the game. With India threatening to move into the ascendancy at 230 for 5, however, a new spell from Anderson brought the breakthrough. Tendulkar, half forward to one that held its own, could only edge the ball and was very well held by a diving Prior behind the stumps. The game was in the balance once more.

Forget Puerta: Clement can unleash Rangers’ "Rolls Royce" in a new role

da cassino online: Glasgow Rangers head into the final few days of the transfer window with pressure to bring in another player or two who could inject some quality into the team.

da apostaganha: Philippe Clement has failed to really move on any of the club’s big earners except for Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers, as several would rather see out their lucrative contracts at Ibrox rather than take a pay cut elsewhere.

It appears as though the manager doesn’t have many funds to work with until these players are moved on, having to potentially rely on loans and free transfers between now and the end of the window.

The Light Blues have been linked with their fair share of targets over the previous few weeks, but it looks like one player won't be making the move to Scotland…

Latest on Rangers move for Gustavo Puerta

A couple of weeks ago, Danish news outlet Tipbaldet claimed that the Gers were keen on signing midfielder Gustavo Puerta from Bayer Leverkusen.

Blackburn Rovers, Anderlecht, and Danish side Brondby were also keen on signing the Colombian this summer, with Anderlecht looking to secure a season-long loan deal with an option to buy for €6m (£5m).

Gustavo Puerta

Journalist Alan Nixon (via the Daily Record) states that Leverkusen have reportedly received an offer worth around £3m for the midfielder, which could signal the end of the Light Blues' interest in him.

It is Brondby who has made the offer and there is little hope of Rangers matching it. The only chance Clement may be able to secure a deal this summer is if Xabi Alonso would prefer the player to go out on loan to gain much-needed game time.

Gustavo Puerta’s season in numbers

The Colombian starlet may have been part of the Leverkusen side which won the Bundesliga title unbeaten in 2023/24, but he made just seven appearances in the competition.

Although making brief cameos, Puerta did demonstrate why Leverkusen signed him in the first place. In the top flight, he finished with a 95% pass success rate, won 67% of his total duels and succeeded with 100% of his dribbles during his time on the pitch.

He was offered more chances in Europe, making three appearances in the Europa League for the German side.

When compared to his positional peers in the competition, Puerta ranked in the top 3% for attempted passes and pass success rate per 90, while also ranking in the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90, demonstrating his excellent passing range on the continent.

There is no doubt that Clement needs a number six to come into the starting XI and dominate possession during games, dictating the play, which could allow the likes of Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron the licence to push forward.

Puerta would be an ideal signing, but it looks like this one might just slip through the net. Could the Belgian have a player in his squad who perhaps fits the profile of the Colombian and might be able to replicate his skills as a number six?

Leon King has usually performed as a centre-back for the Ibrox side, but he tends to push into the midfield when representing Scotland U21s and this could be an indication that Clement must experiment with the 20-year-old.

Leon King’s Rangers statistics

The promising centre-back made his first team debut for the Gers during Steven Gerrard’s tenure, playing against Falkirk in the League Cup aged just 16 at the time.

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon King.

There was no doubting his potential, something which Gerrard was keen to develop, and he even made his Premiership debut in the penultimate match of the season against Livingston.

The following campaign saw King make six first appearances under Giovanni Van Bronckhorst as he was eased into the first-team setting and these would stand him in good stead ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Injuries to John Souttar and Ben Davies saw King called into the starting XI to partner Connor Goldson, both domestically and in the Champions League group stages.

It was a baptism of fire for the youngster, but given his inexperience at this level, he did acquit himself fairly well.

Across 15 league games, King achieved a pass success rate of 88%, along with being dribbled past just 0.3 occasions and winning 67% of his ground duels, solid statistics for someone who was thrown into the deep end.

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton hailed King in the summer of 2022, just before his breakthrough season, saying: “I think when I did watch him last season, he was like a big Rolls Royce, very elegant on the ball. He came out, kept possession and looked very comfortable for someone of such a young age.”

These traits could see him move slightly further forward into a midfield slot, one that he is comfortable doing for the national team.

During the U21s European Championship qualifying group, King played in the heart of the midfield four times, even grabbing an assist against Hungary in a 3-1 victory.

With these performances in mind, Clement could trial the youngster in a midfield slot across the next few week, especially if he isn’t able to sign another player for that position.

Rangers defender Leon King.

Loan moves are all fine and well, but they eventually return to their parent clubs at the end of the season. King has shown he can become a regular member of the first-team squad, as evidenced during the first half of 2022/23.

The Belgian manager seems intent on developing young talent and allowing them the opportunity to shine. While the pressure may be on for him to succeed this season, given the nature of his squad, it could well be a transitional campaign.

If the 20-year-old – who is yet to play in midfield at senior level for his club – gets a chance to showcase his true worth, he could be Clement’s own version of Puerta, without a shadow of a doubt.

Will the 6 foot titan get that opportunity, however? Only time will tell.

More exciting than Yoro: INEOS lining up "monster" Man Utd move

Manchester United supporters are no doubt riding high at present – and rightly so – having snapped up Serie A's Young Player of the Year, Joshua Zirkzee, from Bologna, while also prising Lille's Leny Yoro from out of Real Madrid's clutches.

Of course, the Red Devils have been here before, with a 'successful' summer not often translating to a successful season, yet who's to say that things can't be different this time around, with manager Erik ten Hag now boosted by the support of the INEOS regime.

As was shown in the £52m deal for Yoro – which was seemingly something of an obsession for new CEO, Omar Berrada – United don't appear afraid to step on a few toes to get what they want, with that likely to be true again amid reports of another potential statement move.

Man Utd ready to raid Premier League rivals

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the Old Trafford outfit are "exploring a deal" for Arsenal's teenage sensation, Chido Obi-Martin, with initial talks having already been held regarding the 16-year-old's potential move to Manchester.

As per the respected insider, the Denmark youth international has seen his schoolboy terms expire in north London after turning down a contract offer from the Gunners, with a departure from the club now on the cards.

The highly-rated striker has already visited Carrington amid United's pursuit of a deal, albeit with there also likely to be significant rival interest in his services from clubs across Europe.

Why Man Utd are interested in Chido Obi-Martin

At a time when the club are still seeking a prolific number nine to bolster the first-team squad – with new man Zirkzee having netted just 12 times last season in Italy – the prospect of signing a figure for the future rather than the present may not be cause for much excitement among the United faithful.

That said, all the evidence points to the capture of Obi-Martin being something of a masterstroke, with the in-demand talent having notably hit the headlines last season after scoring ten – yes ten – times in a 14-3 win over Liverpool's U16s last season.

In total, the emerging superstar ended 2023/24 with 32 goals in just 21 outings for Arsenal's U18 side, with his towering frame at that age group making him a real "monster on the pitch", in the words of data analyst Ben Mattinson.

Tipped to "battle it out" with Rasmus Hojlund at international level in the years to come – as per Mattinson – it is clear just why there is such clamour over the teenager's signature, with INEOS needing to do all they can to get a deal over the line.

Of course, the club have only recently shown their muscle in the market by forking out for Yoro, yet there is an argument to be made that a move for Obi-Martin could represent an even more bold and exciting deal.

Like with any youngster, there must be a note of caution over getting too carried away, yet it would, no doubt, be extremely satisfying to poach the player from a direct rival in Arsenal, with such a deal likely to evoke memories of a certain Robin van Persie back in 2012 – the Dutch goal machine going on to fire United to a 20th league title with 26 Premier League goals in his debut season.

While such heroics may take time to come for Obi-Martin, his goalscoring exploits at youth level do point to future stardom, thus ensuring he could potentially make an even bigger impact than any defender – like Yoro – could at the Theatre of Dreams.

With the Red Devils arguably still waiting to find a suitable, long-term successor to Van Persie after a decade of short-term and costly centre-forward signings, where better to finally end that search than by plucking another 'superstar' from under the noses of the Gunners.

Hopefully, like 'RVP', the little boy inside of him is also "screaming for United"…

Phillips 80*, Mayers 81* seal stunning Barbados Royals win

St Lucia Kings qualify for play-offs despite defeat

An unbeaten 134-run third wicket partnership between Kyle Mayers and Glenn Phillips saw Barbados Royals close out a disappointing CPL campaign on a high, chasing down 190 and beating St Lucia Kings by eight wickets. Mayers smashed 81 off 62 balls while Phillips blitzed 80 off 39 as they cantered to what looked a stiff target with seven balls to spare. Despite the defeat, the Kings eventually qualified for the play-offs in fourth place, after other results on the day went in their favour. After being set 191, the Royals began shakily, shackled in the powerplay by Jeavor Royal, before a double-wicket maiden looked to have put them on the brink of defeat early. Johnson Charles holed out to cover-point the first ball of Roston Chase’s spell, while Shai Hope was run out at the non-striker’s end off the next one, dismissed without even getting the chance to get on strike. With Mayers struggling for fluency, it was Phillips who grabbed control of the game early on, setting the tone by smashing Chase for a six over cow corner in his next over. From that point onwards, the two continued to chip away at the runs, and as they began to draw closer, the asking rate always remained well under control.Even when Wahab Riaz bowled a tight 18th over to crank the pressure up slightly, Phillips released it emphatically in the penultimate one. Three of the next four balls went for six as Alzarri Joseph’s horror day (0-49) came to an appropriately miserable end, and the side that will prop up the table finished with their most impressive batting display of all.It looked like it might have been a different story when the Kings shrugged off the absence of Faf du Plessis. Rakheem Cornwall and Andre Fletcher blitzed through the Powerplay. Cornwall struck a breezy 26-ball 40 to set the tone before the irrepressible Chase top-scored with 56 as the Kings began to eye up a big finish. With no Mohammad Amir, the Royals lacked a bit of guile both at the top and tail of their bowling effort, and Raymon Reifer and Mayers came in for hefty punishment towards the death. At that stage, the Kings looked like they had seized control of their own destiny. Phillips, and the Royals, ensure they will have to wait for the night games instead.

Kumble: When you leave it to the last couple of balls, it becomes a lottery

Punjab Kings head coach says their batters should have finished the chase in 19 overs

Shashank Kishore21-Sep-20214:52

Steyn: The better team lost tonight

Anil Kumble, the Punjab Kings coach, was at a loss of words to explain yet another loss from a winning position. Kings failed to score the eight runs they needed off the last two overs to lose to Rajasthan Royals by just two runs. It made their qualifying chances that much harder. A sixth loss in nine games now means Kings will have to win every single game to control their own fate.

“It’s sort of become a pattern for us especially when we get to Dubai, it seems,” Kumble said. “The approach was clear, we needed to finish it in 19 overs. That was the approach, to not let it go till the end. But unfortunately, when you leave it to the last couple of balls, it becomes a lottery. Credit to [Kartik] Tyagi for the way he bowled.”The loss followed a somewhat similar pattern to their game against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi last year. Back then, they lost despite needing just 22 off 18 balls with nine wickets in hand. On that occasion, they turned a cruise into complete wreckage by throwing their bats around and then being bested by Sunil Narine. Here, they couldn’t quite get bat to ball.Kumble was particularly irked by his batters not being able to read Tyagi’s plans towards the end.”It was pretty clear he was going to bowl wide outside off, and somehow our batters didn’t take the right options,” he said. “We need to discuss this and sort it out. We have five more games to go, we don’t want to get bogged down by this defeat but it’s certainly a bitter pill to swallow.”Related

Asked if he thought Royals left them with too much to chase, Kumble felt the bowlers had done everything that was asked of them on a “good wicket.” And it was simply a case of the batters failing to see off the chase. Arshdeep Singh picked up his maiden T20 five-for, while Mohammed Shami’s late strikes meant Royals finished well short of the 200-plus they looked to get. In fact, they lost 6 for 19.”I think it was a very good wicket, and we really came back in the last four overs where we gave away just 20 runs and picked up six wickets or so. Arshdeep bowled brilliantly, as did Shami. [Harpreet] Brar bowled really well on a tough pitch. On a ground where one side of the boundary is short, at one stage Royals looked good to score 200-210. So to really squeeze them in the last four, I thought the bowling effort was really good.”With the bat also, we showed it till the 17th over. We were cruising but we were pulled back in the 18th and 19th overs after [Aiden] Markram’s six. As batters, they know what their scoring shots are. All it needed was a bit of hitting. Even if someone got out first ball, the next batter had five balls to get the runs. When it goes to the last couple of balls, it becomes hard. The messaging was clear. We had to finish it in 19 overs, unfortunately that didn’t happen today.”

Christian, bowlers help Australia pull one back

In a small chase, they stumbled to 65 for 6 before Agar’s calm helped seal the deal

It may not rank particularly high in Australia’s sporting achievements today as the Olympics draws to a finish, but the cricketers avoided a series whitewash against Bangladesh with a three-wicket win in a low-scoring scrap on a devilishly tricky surface. The home side made them sweat for it, too, and when the chase subsided to 65 for 6 – with 30 of those runs having come when Dan Christian took Shakib Al Hasan for five sixes in an over – it looked like they could pull off an extraordinary victory. However, Ashton Agar produced a calm and clever innings to take Australia to the brink of the target alongside Ashton Turner. This entire series has been hard work for batters, and this match took it to another level. Bangladesh were set back by the excellent Josh Hazlewood, stumbled against the recalled Mitchell Swepson and only crossed three figures in the final over when Mahedi Hasan struck an enterprising 23 off 16 balls.Christian’s promotionWhen Matthew Wade fell in the first over the chase, missing an arm-ball from Mahedi that went between bat and pad, Australia signalled a change of intent. Christian walked in at No. 3 and it was clear from ball one that he was going to play his strokes. He thumped his second ball for four and then the fourth over against Shakib, he unleashed with five sixes in the arc from long-on to deep midwicket. Only the fourth ball of the over did not go over the rope when Shakib manage to toss one wider that spun to beat the bat. At 45 for 1 after four overs the chase was almost half done, but things had changed before the Powerplay was over with Ben McDermott lbw to Nasum Ahmed and then Christian carving Mustafizur Rahman to point as the left-arm started with a wicket maiden.Surely not, AustraliaThe tension started to grow, Bangladesh sensed Australia were vulnerable and it felt like Australia knew it themselves. Except for a thumping inside-out drive by Mitchell Marsh, he and Moises Henriques were cautious. There was no rush, of course, given the required rate but it did not feel convincing. Then a moment of fortune for Bangladesh when Marsh’s firm drive clipped Shakib’s fingers and went onto the stumps with Henriques short of his crease. Alex Carey was kept quiet by Mahedi and then pinned lbw by another superb cutter from Mustafizur. Five balls later, Marsh played inside one from Mahedi and Bangladesh were favourites before Turner and Agar combined. The tension was broken somewhat when Agar slog-swept Nasum with just enough power to clear deep midwicket in what became a little gem of an innings under pressure.Shakib’s tough nightAside from the finger-tip run out, it was not a night that Shakib will remember too fondly but it can happen to the best of them. Like most batters he could not get going, labouring to 15 off 26 balls after Bangladesh had made a relatively and deceptively brisk start. He was kept quiet by Agar, Turner and Andrew Tye before eventually falling when he tried to cut Hazlewood. With the ball, he responded well from going for 30 in one over but figures of 4-0-50-0 in a low-scoring match certainly stood out.Swepson grabs his chanceThis was just Swepson’s second outing of the twin tours to West Indies and Bangladesh but he took his chance to make a mark with his best figures of a short T20I career. He trapped Mahmudullah lbw sweeping then pinned Nurul Hasan first ball with a googly although couldn’t join Nathan Ellis with a hat-trick. But he did claim a third when Mohammad Naim, who top scored with 28 off 36 balls, top-edged a slog sweep. If a third frontline spinner is needed for the World Cup he should be locked in.

Greatest Tests: Adams' St John's heist vs the latest Edgbaston epic

Jimmy Adams upstaging Wasim Akram in St John’s or Pat Cummins’ Australia beating Bazball? Pick between two classics

Deivarayan Muthu08-May-2025Update: This poll has ended. The ENG-AUS 2023 Birmingham Test moves to the round of 16.West Indies’ one-wicket jailbreak vs Pakistan – St John’s, 2000After more twists and turns than a whodunnit, Jimmy Adams upstaged Wasim Akram to complete a one-wicket heist with a healthy helping of luck. West Indies benefited from two umpiring errors and Saqlain Mushtaq fluffing two run-out chances, including one when Adams and No. 11 Courtney Walsh were both stranded at the striker’s end. When West Indies were 202 for 9, still 14 runs away from victory, Saqlain panicked under pressure and failed to gather the throw cleanly at the bowler’s end. Adams and Walsh eventually scrambled a leg-bye, leaving Pakistan wondering what might have been. Walsh held on limpet-like for 72 minutes with his captain Adams, who remained unbeaten on 48 off 212 balls, as West Indies clinched one of their most memorable and dramatic wins in Test cricket at the turn of the century in St John’s.Despite the lapses in the field, Akram had kept Pakistan in it by taking out four of West Indies’ top six – he came away with a match haul of 11 wickets – but Adams had the final say when he squeezed a single to point off Akram.Australia beat Bazball – Birmingham 2023″Boring, boring, Aussies” was the chant from the Hollies Stand at Edgbaston on the fourth afternoon when Usman Khawaja was digging in and slowly building for Australia in their pursuit of 281. By the fifth evening, the crowd was stunned into silence as Australia aced the old-school long game to beat England’s new-age fast play. When Khawaja fell for 65, with Ben Stokes ending his near-five-and-a-half-hour vigil, Australia had slipped to 209 for 7. Then, when Alex Carey’s wicket left Australia at 227 for 8, it certainly felt like England’s Bazballers were on their way to another famous win. Australia captain Pat Cummins, though, flipped the mood and result with an unbeaten 44 off 73 balls, with No. 10 Nathan Lyon hanging on in an unbroken 55-run partnership for the ninth wicket. After having come under fire with his defensive fields on the opening day, Cummins played the decisive hand on the final day, absorbing good balls from Stokes and Ollie Robinson and lining up Joe Root’s part-time offspin for a brace of sixes. After sealing the deal, Cummins let out a big roar, threw his bat and punched his fist in a rare show of emotion that summed up how much this win meant to him and Australia.

Personal terms agreed: Chelsea close in on £40m Olise partner

da lvbet: Chelsea have flattered to deceive over the past few years but with Enzo Maresca now installed to the dugout, there is a growing belief that Stamford Bridge can enjoy a resurgence.

da stake casino: In fairness, Mauricio Pochettino engineered an impressive second-half-of-season advancement that salvaged Europa Conference League football, but the Argentine's departure was mutually agreed at the end of the term, with Maresca's purposeful ball-centric brand of football viewed as the ideal fit for the project.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

Bolstering effectively this summer will be paramount to gaining an edge over rivals, and while Tosin Adarabioyo has already been welcomed to the defence, Chelsea are set on strengthening up front, with a deal believed to be nearing completion.

Chelsea agree exciting deal

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are now in advanced discussions with Aston Villa for the transfer of forward Jhon Duran, with the move possibly completed in the next week after having reached an 'agreement in principle' regarding personal terms.

Fabrizio Romano has since corroborated the claim, and while the 20-year-old is desperate to complete the switch, the Blues are yet to make their final decision.

Duran has enjoyed an impressive breakout campaign at Villa Park, and though a £40m deal has been agreed, it is stressed there are still several obstacles to overcome.

Why Maresca wants Jhon Duran

The tumult and upheaval that have buffeted Stamford Bridge in recent years were never going to be conducive to a successful period on the pitch, but this forgettable epoch is now expected to have been placed in the past, with Maresca crafting a young and aspiring team capable of rising to a position of power among the heaviest hitters in the Premier League.

Duran is not the finished article by any stretch but he proved himself to be a formidable force at a young and unrefined stage of his career, scoring eight goals in all competitions last season, including five in the Premier League despite starting only three matches.

Given that Duran only averaged 22 minutes of match action per top-flight fixture, not even taking a shot per game (0.9), it's evident that he's got the mark of a natural-born goalscorer, though, in truth, his skill set offers so much more.

As per FBref, the Colombia international ranks among the top 14% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for aerial duels won and tackles, the top 7% for blocks and the top 1% for clearances per 90. He is not, indeed, merely a goalscorer.

Duran has actually been described as a "nightmare for defenders" by his Villa captain John McGinn and he would bring a cauldron of chaos to west London's finest frontline.

But that frontline is going to be chopped and changed over the next few months. Duran is at the top of the shopping list at centre-forward, but he's certainly not the only Premier League star coveted by Todd Boehly and Co.

How Chelsea's attack could look in 24/25

Chelsea are pushing to land a new striker but so too are they eyeing up one of English football's most destructive wide forwards. As per Romano, Chelsea are pushing to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old, born in England but aspiring for the French national team, endured an injury-hit season but still managed to score ten goals and supply a further six assists from just 19 Premier League matches – including only 14 starts.

He won 5.7 duels and averaged 2.1 dribbles per game to boot and clearly possesses one of the most combative, creative and, in summary, complete styles of any talent forward in Europe, and Chelsea would only rise to another level with him in the team.

Let's just, for one moment, imagine Olise on the right. Shuttling forward with panache and purpose and whipping in those balls that leave commentators with a kind of giddied wonder. Or, alternatively, he could cut inside, stepping across like a cheetah changing pace, before finding space and rifling a shot into the corner.

Ah, but how could we forget Cole Palmer? Chelsea's star man enjoyed quite the campaign after freeing himself from the shackles of bloated sparkle at Manchester City and cementing himself as London's finest during an almighty emergence season, scoring 25 goals and adding 15 assists from 45 matches for Chelsea.

The England international has all the tools in his locker. Olise and Palmer would form a deadly and dynamic partnership that could be perfect for Duran's chances of success, the young striker using his pace and power to skim through the lines and latch onto the creative wizardry of his peers.

It is, no doubt, a tentatively exciting time to be a Chelsea fan. The seeds of success have been placed within firm soil, and while there is much to do to ensure Maresca's arrival is not a false dawn, with such players dotted across the frontline it is hard to imagine that the Blues will not rise above the malaise of recent times.

And all that's without even considering Nicolas Jackson, who has faced his detractors since signing for Chelsea from Villarreal for a fee in excess of £30m last season but scored 17 goals in total and has the all-round game to forge a prosperous career under Maresca.

But Duran would offer assistance, both as a foil and a rival to push and promote growth for both. Chelsea need to get it right this summer to ensure that the canyon dividing them from the top three is narrowed. Duran has demonstrated his talent at Villa Park and now he could take the next step in his promising career by moving to the capital.
