Mandhana, Kemp and spinners sink van Niekerk-less Invincibles

Mandhana’s 46 helped Brave to 153 for 8, and Invincibles never got going in the chase

Oval Invincibles are defending champions in the Hundred and eased to a nine-wicket win on the opening night of the women’s competition on Wednesday. But three days later, their season is in turmoil after they made a shock call to omit captain Dane van Niekerk from their side, then slipped to a 12-run defeat against Southern Brave in a rematch of last year’s final in the south London sunshine.Marizanne Kapp was fit to return after missing the opening game through illness and her return demanded a tough call, with four top-class overseas players in the squad and only three permitted in the playing XI. Jonathan Batty, Invincibles’ head coach, was expected to leave out Suzie Bates, but her innings of 46 off 34 against Northern Superchargers saw her keep her place.Instead, van Niekerk made way, and Invincibles never got going in her absence. Smriti Mandhana hit the first two balls of the innings for four after Bates, deputising as captain, chose to bowl, and her innings of 46 led Brave to 153 for 8, the highest women’s Hundred total at The Oval. In the chase, Kapp, Bates and Lauren Winfield-Hill made bright starts, but failed to turn their cameos into innings of substance as Brave’s spinners closed out a comfortable win in front of a 14,525 crowd.Mandhana magic
Mandhana missed the final week of the Hundred last year, returning home to see her family before flying to Australia for India’s tour, and their batting wasn’t the same without her: in the final, they folded to 73 all out – which represented something of a recovery from 14 for 6. While there is no guarantee she would have kept out Kapp’s high-class opening spell on that day, this was a reminder of what Brave had missed. She was up and running immediately, creaming her first ball – from Kapp, no less – through the covers for four and hit six fours in her first 13 deliveries, punishing Kapp and Shabnim Ismail when they missed their lengths. When she slog-swept Mady Villiers for four at the start of the ninth, she was a hit away from a half-century after just 24 balls, but was beaten in the flight by her 25th and stumped by Winfield-Hill.”I was timing the ball well,” Mandhana told Sky Sports at the interval. “When you get a first-ball boundary, that gives you a lot of confidence. I was really disappointed to get out – I think it’s a crime to get out in the 40s after batting so well – and really disappointed that I couldn’t play at least until the 90th ball.”Sophia Smale had the wickets of Danni Wyatt and Tahlia McGrath to show•ECB/Getty Images

Brave keep coming
Invincibles took regular wickets through the middle phase, with 17-year-old left-arm spinner Sophia Smale keeping a lid on the scoring, but Charlotte Edwards has made a point of building a side with a long batting line-up and they continued to attack throughout the innings: Mandhana aside, no batter reached even 25 but their intent dragged them up to a defendable total.Freya Kemp and Georgia Adams’ partnership of 45 off 24 balls for the sixth wicket was particularly crucial, and highlighted the extent to which Brave’s lower-order firepower has emboldened their batters to attack: rather than a major setback, each dismissal resembles one batter handing the baton over to the next.Oval’s overseas dilemma
Batty’s decision to leave out his captain, and the MVP across the tournament’s first season, was a gamble that backfired. “She led them to the trophy last year,” Lydia Greenway said on Sky. “From a coach’s point of view, if you feel like you need to make a big call like that, you have to go for it. The challenge they will have is if they lose today, how will they manage that?”In her absence, Invincibles needed their overseas trio to step up and prove their worth; perhaps inevitably, they struggled to make any impact. Kapp and Ismail were uncharacteristically loose with the new ball and at the death, returning combined figures of 0 for 67 from 40 balls. With the bat, Bates hit 15 off 8 balls and Kapp crunched 19 off 9, but both fell without making a lasting impact. With Alice Capsey sidelined due to the ankle injury she picked up fielding in Invincibles’ opening game, their domestic players were left with too much to do. Ryana Macdonald-Gay’s late hitting put a dent in Amanda-Jade Wellington’s figures but by then, tight spells from part-time offspinners Adams (2 for 16 from 20) and Danni Wyatt (2 for 16 from 10) had seen the asking rate spiral out of control.

A rare haul for India's fast bowlers

Stats highlights from the third day of the first Test between New Zealand and India in Auckland

Shiva Jayaraman08-Feb-2014

  • India’s fast bowlers dismissed New Zealand for 105 in the second innings- the hosts’ fourth-lowest total against India in Tests. New Zealand were bowled out for 94 in Hamilton in 2002, which is their lowest total against the visitors. Four of the five lowest scores for New Zealand against India have come at home, with two of them being in Auckland.
  • India had New Zealand tottering at 25 for 5 in their second innings. This was only the fifth time that India had their opposition five down for 25 or less in Tests. The last such instance was against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2005.
  • New Zealand’s total in their second innings was their sixth-lowest at Eden Park. Their lowest at this venue is 26, against England in 1955.
  • The third day’s play saw 17 wickets falling for 264 runs. Only once has more wickets fallen in a day at this venue in a Test- against Australia, when 18 wickets fell for 304 runs on the first day. There are only six instances of 18 or more wickets falling on a single day in Tests in New Zealand. Click here for a list of Tests in which 18 or more wickets have fallen on a single day.
  • The difference between New Zealand’s total in the first innings and the second innings was 398 runs, which is the second-highest difference between their scores in two innings of a Test, and the highest when they have scored more runs in the first innings. New Zealand’s highest deficit between two innings of a Test is 497, against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 1991. On that occasion though, New Zealand made up for their ordinary show in the first innings with huge score of 671 in their second. Click here for a list of the highest difference between a team’s first and second innings.
  • India’s fast bowlers took 17 wickets in the match – only the seventh instance of them taking 17 or more wickets in a Test. The last time India’s quicks notched so many wickets in a Test was against England at Trent Bridge in 2011.
  • New Zealand have set India a target of 407 runs. Only four targets of 400 or more have been chased successfully in Tests. The highest target that has been chased down successfully at the Eden Park is 345, which West Indies achieved against the hosts, way back in 1969.

"Strong" Celtic ace could return vs Aberdeen alongside McGregor and Kuhn

da dobrowin: In hope of getting one over on their surprise title rivals and advancing into the Scottish League Cup final, Celtic could now receive as many as three injury boosts against Aberdeen.

Celtic injury news

da blaze casino: The Bhoys were forced to square off against Dundee with a number of problems within their squad but eased to victory once again nonetheless, courtesy of goals just seven minutes apart from Arne Engels and Alistair Johnston from the bench. Sealing all three points, Celtic have now dropped just two points from their opening 10 Scottish Premiership games and sit nine points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers but level on points with the impressive Aberdeen.

Up next the Scottish champions once again do battle against their closest title rivals, this time squaring off in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, in which Celtic could welcome the returns of Callum McGregor, Nicolas Kuhn and another major boost in pursuit of the final.

As confirmed by Rodgers, Adam Idah could make his return vs Aberdeen alongside both McGregor and Kuhn this weekend after all three stars missed Celtic’s victory over Dundee in midweek.

European club may make new dream move for £12,000-p/w Celtic player in 2025

He’s currently out on loan.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 30, 2024

The Celtic boss told reporters as relayed by the Irish Examiner: “All three will be fine. Nicolas Kuhn had a sore hip after the game at the weekend. But he trained earlier, so that was good. Callum as well, and Adam also. We’ll see their reaction. Hopefully, it will be all right.

“I think he’s got away with one there, Adam. He’s still a bit sore, a bit swollen, but the medical team tell me he’s done a bit of work. So, hopefully no reaction to it.”

Rodgers heaps praise on "strong" Idah

Idah always looked unlikely to reach his full potential at Norwich City, despite breaking through the academy. And after a successful loan move in Scotland, a permanent move to Celtic instantly seemed on the cards. Since the switch, the Irishman has gradually shown signs of becoming the player many tipped him to become when he first emerged, scoring five goals in 13 games for the Bhoys.

Having avoided a serious injury concern, Idah will now be hoping to make his return in one of Celtic’s biggest games of the season so far before earning yet more praise from Rodgers.

The former Liverpool manager told STV after Idah scored the winning goal in the Scottish Cup final last season: “I knew what I was getting because I’d seen him in the Premier League at 18. He has all the attributes. He’s fast, dynamic, strong and I felt with better positioning he’d get goals.

“What he’s done since coming in is show that he’s a goalscorer. He gets different types of goals. He has great movement in the box and he deals with pressure moments.

“Today, he was like a real number nine sniffing in and around the box. He’s been absolutely immense for us and he’s clearly someone I’d like to do something with.”

Hope of new beginnings for Yorkshire as Harry Brook, Dominic Leech sign long-term deals

Commitment from two young players follows recent exodus of senior players

Yorkshire’s new regime have received the first show of faith they needed with Harry Brook and Dominic Leech both committing themselves to a long-term future with the club. After a testing week, in which both David Willey and Tom Kohler-Cadmore have chosen to go elsewhere, the decision by two Yorkshire-born players to keep faith with the county during a difficult transition will lift spirits. The news of the new contracts will be welcomed as a blessed relief – adding to the delight around Headingley over some of the best ticket sales in the ground’s history for a Test bedevilled by rail strikes and positive Covid tests. The county is negotiating its way through the most challenging phase in its history after allegations of institutional racism and an unhealthy dressing-room culture. It is inevitable that the Headingley Test will be the focus for more disruption – and four former chairmen, including the ex ECB chairman Colin Graves, have teamed up to publicly demand an independent enquiry into the ECB’s handling of racism allegations against Yorkshire.Brook, who is currently in the Test squad and making a strong case to play for England in all three formats, will gain most attention by signing a five-year extension that will keep him at Headingley until at least October 2027.Leech, a 21-year-old fast bowler, is less well known, but his promise is considerable. He made his debut in 2020 and will remain with Yorkshire until at least October 2024.Yorkshire’s coaching team of Darren Gough, the interim director of cricket, and Ottis Gibson, the head coach, have clear views about their priorities as they seek to build a positive environment, and successful side, in the wake of the global fallout from Azeem Rafiq’s racism allegations. Both will be thrilled by the first sign that they build a successful future.”We are absolutely delighted that they have both committed their futures to the club,” Gough said. “Harry is an incredible talent and the performances he has put in so far this year have been nothing short of incredible, rightfully earning him an England call-up.”It’s clear that he has a very bright future and it’s great for the club to be able to secure his services for a long period of time.”Dom is a highly regarded seamer and we are really excited to see what he can achieve over the next few years.”Like most young fast bowlers, he’s had to cope with a few injuries in the early stage of his career but we are confident he has all of the attributes to be a brilliant cricketer for Yorkshire.”Dominic Leech is a promising young seamer who has committed to Yorkshire until 2024•Getty Images

Brook has enjoyed a stellar rise to prominence. So far this season he has scored a remarkable 926 runs in 11 County Championship innings, alongside 282 Vitality Blast runs at an average of 47. His form was recognised with a call-up to the England Test squad for the New Zealand series, having made his T20I debut during the tour of the Caribbean in January. He also skippered Yorkshire in their latest Blast fixture against Derbyshire at Chesterfield on Saturday.Yorkshire’s mass sacking of their coaching and ancillary staff in December will be debated for decades. Cricket does not deal in such wholesale changes in the same way as football does. But they will hope that a pattern may now be set. Most uplifting for Yorkshire was that the comments from both players appear to suggest a willingness to put recent political disruption behind them, perhaps even accepting it as the lot of a professional in team sport.Brook said: “I’m delighted to extend my contract with Yorkshire and hope I can contribute to a lot of wins in the coming years. Yorkshire is my home club and I’d love nothing more than to help bring some silverware to Headingley.”Leech said: “I’m really pleased to have signed a contract extension with Yorkshire and committed my future to the club. I’ve had a great taste of first-team cricket over the last few years and want to push for a permanent spot in all squads.”I’ve enjoyed working with our new coaching staff and look forward to continuing to develop my relationships with them. It’s great that the club have recognised my performances and rewarded me with this contract. Hopefully I can play my part in the side winning some trophies.”

What the people present in the meeting had to say about what took place

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2013After the working-committee meeting of the BCCI, N Srinivasan stepped aside while the commission probes the charges of betting and spot-fixing in the IPL. Jagmohan Dalmiya was charged with day-to-day activities of the board. Here is what the people present in the meeting had to say about what took place. On the outcome of the meeting
“I have taken an extraordinarily fair step of not discharging my duties till the probe is completed. What have I done wrong? There is no charge laid against me. Nothing.”
“It seemed like a pre-planned drama. I said it was a sham that will not satisfy the public.”
“I am not only unhappy. I am extremely sad. I am at the same time extremely concerned about the future. We need a more credible explanation rather than just putting old wine in new bottles.”
“What hurt me during the meeting is we should have discussed the system and not just individuals. How to cleanse the system. And what wrong things have entered the game of cricket.”
“Under this arrangement, you must have a board with some credibility. Since the board has taken this decision, I am sure it must be given a chance.”
“It was the most uncharitable and unreasonable comment you have made.”
On how the arrangement with Jagmohan Dalmiya will work
“Mr Dalmiya will look after the responsibilities. He will get decisions ratified by the board. The entire administration will be done by the working committee of the board. Whatever Mr Dalmiya decides will have to be ratified by the board.”
“This is an internal matter on how the board arranges itself. Mr Dalmiya is very experienced. Within the framework of the rules of the board, it can be managed.”
“I have no problem with Mr Dalmiya coming in. He is an experienced administrator, but I don’t like the way he has been brought in.”
“I cannot see how this kind of arrangement work.”
On who all asked Srinivasan to resign unconditionally
“Nobody except Mr Bindra and myself and a couple of others questioned this arrangement. At the end of the day, this has been carried through.”
“At the meeting, Mr Bindra didn’t ask me to resign. The meeting was very smooth. There was no acrimony. The members appreciated what were the tasks ahead of the BCCI. This announcement I made after all members had expressed their views. This was well received. Then Mr Dalmiya was appointed.”
“I have the minutes and the notes of the meeting. I categorically asked for his resignation. I said this sham will not satisfy the public. I said he should resign and come back if exonerated.”
“Nobody had asked for his resignation. I can say nobody came forward. It was unnecessary, like going after a punching bag.”

On what happens to the resignations of Shirke and Jagdale
“All of us requested Mr Jagdale and Mr Shirke to continue so that there is continuity. Ajay Shirke is my best friend. He said he will come back tomorrow. Even Sanjay Jagdale will get back to us tomorrow.”

“They were unanimous in asking us to take back the resignation, but I feel bad that I cannot respond in a positive manner.”
“No question of me taking back the resignation unless there is a creditable route ahead of us.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rogers was 17 when he joined City from West Brom in 2019 but did not make it to the senior team as he was loaned out before joining Middlesbrough in 2023, and then ending up at Villa at the start of this year. After his impressive display on Saturday, Guardiola defended the club's decision to let him leave as he admitted there was no place for him in a team that went on to win the Champions League.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

“It was a team that won the treble. Sometimes it’s the right time to give the [player] a chance," he told reporters. "Of course, everyone knows how good is Morgan. In that age, at the moment, we have the players we have that allowed us to create the most successful eight years in football history. In our club, comparing in this 35 or 40 days it’s not good. Sometimes when they arrive they are three years younger, in that moment there are players in their prime, David Silvas, Bernardos and Riyads [Mahrez] and Raheems [Sterling]. Sometimes it’s difficult and that’s the only reason why. That situation right now, of course these types of players would be with us but it’s always about the right moment. I’m happy for him as he’s a lovely guy, he exploded last season and this season. He’s an exceptional player."

After seeing his contract at Manchester United torn up in acrimonious circumstances, CR7 took the decision to step out of his comfort zone and leave European football. A record-breaking contract was signed at Al-Nassr, with that deal set to expire in the summer of 2025.

There has been talk of Ronaldo taking on another new challenge, as he prepares to turn 40, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has often spoken of his happiness in Riyadh. He committed to a long-term project in Saudi Arabia and intends to see that through.

WHAT RONALDO SAID

Ronaldo has told the , having been joined in that division by a number of other household names: "For me, it is an honour that the league is growing and many star players are coming to make the league even better and more competitive. To be the first one – let’s say a star – to come here is an honour, but what I’m looking forward to is the next five to 10 years of the league still improving, not only the first teams but also the academies.

"Not just for the future of the Saudi [players] and the league, but for the country and to compete with other leagues – this is my dream. And this is what I will try to help the country and league reach and be there at that level."

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Ronaldo has no plans to walk away from his contract at Al-Nassr, with more silverware in his sights. He has savoured just one trophy triumph in the Middle East and said when asked to pick out his favourite memory: "Probably when we won the first title [the 2023 King Salman Arab Clubs Cup, in which he scored both goals in the 2-1 victory against Al Hilal that captured the crown]. The final against Al-Hilal was probably the most intense one that we lived.

"You know, when you win titles, things come easier, and to have the privilege to win in my first year here my first trophy was amazing. But I want more. I will continue to push and help my team Al-Nassr to win titles. I believe that this year will be a good year for Al-Nassr."

Arsenal must swoop for £325k-p/w star who’s better than Martinelli

da bet7k: Arsenal recorded their second 2-0 victory of the Premier League season, with Mikel Arteta's men beating Unai Emery's Aston Villa side, to take six points from their opening two fixtures.

da aposte e ganhe: One player who stood out, with a goal from the bench, was Leandro Trossard, replacing Gabriel Martinelli who struggled to put his print on the game. Trossard entered the game in the 65th minute, scoring two minutes later to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead.

Trossard made 46 appearances for Arsenal last season in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing two assists, whilst alternative left-wing option Gabriel Martinelli made 44 appearances for the Gunners, scoring eight goals and providing five assists.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from HITC, Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling, after he was told he was 'out of the project' last week.

The player is currently assessing options both in England and abroad, but the 29-year-old is said to prefer a move to an English club, and ideally to stay in London.

Sterling made 43 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last season, scoring 10 goals, providing eight assists, and totaling 2,771 minutes played.

Sterling vs Martinelli comparison

Sterling, once described as "brilliant" by Jacek Kulig, has struggled since joining the Blues to find his best form, which saw him score 131 goals in 339 appearances for Manchester City.

On FBref's 'similar players' feature, Sterling and Martinelli are actually compared, their stats ranking fairly similarly, with a similar number of minutes and games played.

The £325k p/w star ranks between Martinelli and Trossard in most metrics, giving you a good indication that whilst each of the Arsenal wingers provides different assets, Sterling could perhaps offer a combination of the two.

Trossard was in hot goal-scoring from last season, backed up by his 0.67 goals per 90 metric, and he started the new campaign as he means to go on, scoring the opener against Villa yesterday.

Martinelli, on the other hand, has been slightly more creative, producing 5.68 progressive carries per 90, averaging 0.25 xAG (expected assists) per 90, and producing 3.92 shot-creating actions per 90.

Sterling outscored Martinelli, with 0.33 goals per 90 (to Martinelli's 0.27), whilst also outperforming Trossard in progressive carries, shot-creating actions, and xAG, further proving that Sterling could add a combination of the goalscoring and creativity output of the current Arsenal duo.

Raheem Sterling

And this is just if Arsenal get this current version of Sterling. If a change of environment could revitalise the English winger, you could see increased numbers in the final third, as he showed in his time at Man City, and this would provide Arteta with a better option than Martinelli on the flank.
