Writing on X, Joseph claimed that Birmingham have now agreed a deal with Ajax to sign striker Chuba Akpom on a season-long loan deal.

However, since this update, it has emerged that Championship rivals Middlesbrough are looking to hijack the Blues’ move for the forward, with Akpom previously starring at the Riverside.

Akpom could be a brilliant signing for Birmingham, giving Davies the extra attacking quality that is needed to be promotion contenders in 2025/26.

The 29-year-old is now an experienced striker who has played at a high level, appearing in both the Champions League and the Europa League last season, as well as being praised by Michael Carrick during their time together at Middlesbrough, having reached 20 league goals in a season.

“It’s a terrific achievement. It’s not easy to score that many goals. He’s scored all different type of goals for us since I’ve been here. I thought his performance was fantastic. “He gets credit for his goals but his performance all round was terrific.”

Akpom is also a former Golden Boot winner in the Championship, highlighting his pedigree further, so he could prove to be a real coup for Birmingham if they can get a deal over the line in the coming days.

According to a report from BBC Sport journalist Alex Howell earlier this week, Palace have maintained their interest in and are now "tracking" Norwich City's Brazilian star, Gabriel Sara.

The Canaries ace has been linked to the South Londoners several times this year, but these reports confirm that interest is still there following the Championship side's painful play-off semi-final defeat.

Howell does not mention how much the Eagles could pay to sign the 24-year-old, but a report earlier this year from Football Insider claimed that the Norfolk side would demand £30m for their starman.

It remains to be seen whether the fact they'll still be playing in the second tier next season affects this price, but even if it doesn't, it would make sense for Palace to repeat what they did with Olise and bring Sara to Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace could repeat their Olise trick

If Steve Parish and Co are feeling reticent about spending such a sizable fee on a player after an impressive season in the Championship, then he only needs to think back to the club's acquisition of Olise from Reading in 2021. After all, he had a haul of seven goals and 12 assists to his name in 46 Championship games the season prior, and he's turned out rather well for Palace.

In fact, in the Frenchman's 90 first-team appearances for the Eagles since his arrival, he has scored 16 goals and provided 25 assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement every 2.1 games despite his numerous injury setbacks.

So, with how well the 22-year-old has taken to life in South London, the club should feel confident that the "superb" Sara, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, will do the same. Especially as his output for Norwich this season has been better than the Palace star's was in his final year in the second tier, racking up 14 goals and 13 assists in 53 games.

Manchester United picked up just their second Premier League win since March on Wednesday, defeating European challenger Newcastle United 3-2.

Erik ten Hag fielded a side without a true number nine, and the overall team performance was slightly better than what the fans have witnessed recently.

That said, the same issues continue to appear, particularly at the back, with the Red Devils facing 21 shots and the visitors missing five big chances.

However, there was one player at the other end of the field who struggled to have any real influence on the game, and it’s time for the star to be given a well-earned test.

Alejandro Garnacho’s 23/24 campaign

It can’t be denied that Alejandro Garnacho has been one of the most consistent performers for Man United this season, with his 35 league appearances proving he’s often relied on by the boss.

In the Premier League alone, the Argentine star has netted seven times and provided four assists, but it’s the constant threat he offers that makes him such a huge talent.

According to DataMB, Garnacho ranks among Bukayo Saka and Michael Olise for dribbles, carries, and expected goal involvements, while he’s also by far the best talent under the age of 20.

Unsurprisingly, starting his 36th consecutive game is clearly taking its toll on the young winger, who’s given his all for the side each time he’s on the grass, but his performance against the Magpies signified that he deserves a rest, just like Rasmus Hojlund.

As you can see, the winger was often a passenger during the game, with his overall involvement quite low, especially when his touches and passes are compared to his positional peer on the away side, Anthony Gordon, and goalkeeper Andre Onana, who also had superior touches and passes, 52 and 25.

Yet, even when he was on the ball, other than his two key passes, he was largely wasteful, boasting a pass accuracy of 72% and losing possession eight times.

But, considering this is his first full campaign as a professional, the demand on him to inspire the team and perform every single week is way too high, so a cameo like yesterday’s is completely expected.

If Ten Hag wants the best version of Garnacho ready and firing on all cylinders against Manchester City in the FA Cup final, the best decision may be to drop him to the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

This means that his long starting streak will come to an end, but it’ll most definitely be worth it if he’s holding the FA Cup trophy in just over a week’s time.

Crystal Palace and their supporters may have to enjoy the remaining matches of this season before they possibly lose some of their top performers in the summer.

When the upcoming transfer window opens for business, a number of Eagles stars appear set to be targets for clubs across England and Europe.

Marc Guehi has been linked with Newcastle United, Arsenal have been credited with an interest in Michael Olise, while Manchester City have reportedly targeted Eberechi Eze.

This means that there is a danger that several key performers for Oliver Glasner may depart before the start of the 2024/25 campaign due to the mounting interest in the likes of Olise and Eze.

There is one first-team star, however, who is now set to stay, and it is one that should please the manager, as he has been a top player for the Austrian boss so far.

Crystal Palace star set to extend deal

According to The Palace Way, central midfielder Will Hughes is set to have his contract at Selhurst Park extended by a further 12 months this summer.

The former Derby County star's current deal is due to expire at the end of this season, but the club have decided to trigger the option they have to extend it to the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

It states that the club are gearing up for a summer rebuild, possibly including the sales of the aforementioned linked-away stars, but an exit for Hughes, who was due to depart on a free transfer, is not on the agenda with this news.

The report goes on to state that Glasner has been very happy with the English midfielder's performances for Palace since his arrival, which speaks to his love of the experienced battler.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the club will look to negotiate a longer contract for the 29-year-old ace, who would become a free agent in the summer of 2025 with this extension.

Will Hughes' Premier League form this season

The left-footed maestro has been a reliable performer for Palace and has struck up a strong partnership with January signing Adam Wharton, adding experience to the 20-year-old's youthful dynamism.

In the recent 2-0 win over Newcastle United earlier this week, Hughes made three blocks, three interceptions, won six duels and created two chances – one of which resulted in an assist – whilst the youngster won 60% (6/10) of his duels next to him as they dominated the Magpies.

An "outstanding" Liverpool player is "in contention" to make a return from injury this week, according to an encouraging update from journalist David Lynch.

The Reds picked up yet another priceless victory in the Premier League title race on Sunday afternoon, coming from behind to win 2-1 at home to Brighton. That result, coupled with Manchester City's 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Etihad, means that Jurgen Klopp's side take a two-point lead with them at the top of the table into the next round of fixtures.

It is threatening to be an incredible season at Liverpool and the fact that they are leading the way with so many injury problems throughout the campaign is a testament to the brilliance of Klopp as a manager.

Against Brighton, the Reds once again had a starting lineup that included Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah – three players who few would have seen as important figures last summer – with Alisson and Trent Alexander-Arnold among those who are unavailable currently.

Curtis Jones has also been missing for an extended period of time in the midfield, while Diogo Jota has also been a huge loss in attack. Then there are long-term absentees such as Joel Matip, Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak.

Thankfully, Liverpool have been boosted by one key piece of injury news, as their fitness woes slowly continue to ease.

As mentioned, Jones may have to bide his time when it comes to getting back into the XI, but he is going to be a massive player between now and the end of the season.

When the Brazilian signed for United in the summer of 2022, question marks were understandably raised.

Although the Red Devils were bringing one of the most decorated midfielders in the game to the Premier League, he was now in his 30s and reaching the latter stages of his career.

Signing an ageing player is not always a bad thing; they bring experience, know-how and quality. Yet, they have no resale value and when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong.

This has been the case for Casemiro, notably in his second campaign with United where he has cut a rather forlorn figure in the middle of the pitch, constantly at fault and criticised for his lack of athleticism which has been found out in England's top-flight.

After another disappointing display against Liverpool this weekend, commentator Ian Darke remarked "Casemiro can’t really run anymore." Those are apt words indeed.

That has been a regular criticism towards the former Real Madrid hero who no doubt suffers from a lack of organisation in United's midfield, but has largely suffered as a result of his overall performance levels which simply haven't been good enough.

What rather summed up Casemiro's campaign was a moment in the second half when he went to press goalscorer Luis Diaz. The 32-year-old headed towards the Liverpool winger, only to be skipped past as though he wasn't even there.

That was one of two times Casemiro was dribbled past throughout an ineffective display that Man United personality Mark Goldbridge claimed was an "absolute stinker".

Further criticism came from Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst who gave the £350k-per-week earner a 5/10 match writing, writing: 'Squandered a good headed-chance by trying to pick out a teammate and irked the crowd by kicking the ball out. More prudent on the ball in the second.'

Somehow lasting the full 90 minutes, the midfielder ended the match with the worst pass completion rate of any player to start the game (67%), having ceded possession on 16 occasions. Only two players in United red managed more; Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.
