English club "concerned" Liverpool will take their manager to replace Klopp

Liverpool continue to search for Jurgen Klopp's successor as manager, and one club are thought to be "concerned" that the Reds could snatch their boss away.

Liverpool manager latest

Klopp's decision to stand down as Reds manager has rocked the football world in recent weeks, in a decision that few saw coming. The German has cited burnout for deciding to call it quits, meaning the Merseysiders now have to focus on nailing his replacement.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has emerged as the favourite to take over at Anfield, with the 42-year-old excelling at Bayer Leverkusen, guiding them to the top of the Bundesliga. On Friday, Klopp even talked him up as the outstanding young manager in world football:

“Xabi is doing an incredible job. If there would not be the rumours around, that’s completely independent. If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso I would have gone: ‘Oh my God.’ The dinosaurs if you want – Ancelotti, Mourinho, Guardiola, maybe me – we will not do it for the next 20 years. OK, maybe Mourinho will. The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is standout in that department."

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Away from Alonso, there are several other candidates who have been linked with the Liverpool job, however, including Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim and Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. Now, another name has been thrown into the mix, as the Reds continue to be linked with Klopp successors.

Ange Postecoglou to Liverpool update

According to Football Insider, Ange Postecoglou could be an option to replace Klopp at Liverpool, and club chiefs at Spurs are "absolutely concerned".

"Tottenham chiefs are worried that Ange Postecoglou could leave to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider. Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Insider Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the club are 'absolutely concerned Ange could go' to the Reds following Klopp’s departure at the end of the season."

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

The report goes on to add that Postecoglou's future at Spurs could hinge on whether his side qualify for next season's Champions League, also stating that there is no release clause in his current deal. It is easy to envisage the Australian being a candidate for the soon-to-be-vacant Liverpool job, not least because he was a boyhood Reds supporter who could jump at the opportunity to take on the role of a lifetime.

More importantly, Postecoglou has proven himself in the Premier League since arriving at Spurs last summer, making a blistering start and playing superb football, even with injuries to key players such as James Maddison hampering him – Pep Guardiola is an admirer, too, which says a lot about his ability.

His side still look well-placed for a top-four finish, though, and his high-pressing, possession-based style would go down well at Anfield. Not only that, but the 58-year-old carries himself with class and would be a good ambassador for Liverpool as a club and city.

FA Cup tie called off after alleged racial abuse sees players and managers walk out in protest

An FA Cup second qualifying round clash was called off over alleged racial abuse as players and managers of both clubs walked off the pitch in protest. The clash between Sporting Khalsa and Hereford was stopped in the 67th minute after Sporting Khalsa goalkeeper Ravan Constable was racially abused. The game paused for a bit before the referee calling it off.

Sporting Khalsa goalkeeper racially abused

According to , Constable was subject to racial abuse from the stands, and the Jamaican goalkeeper confronted the individual. The referee soon decided to call off the tie as managers of both clubs led their teams off the pitch. Reflecting on the unfortunate incident, an FA spokesperson said: "We are very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd during the Emirates FA Cup Second Round Qualifying fixture between Sporting Khalsa FC and Hereford FC. The match was subsequently abandoned, and the next steps for the tie will be confirmed in due course. Incidents of this nature will not be tolerated in our game, and we will work with the match officials, the clubs and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken."

The official statement from Sporting Khalsa read: "Racism and discrimination have no place in football. Sporting Khalsa are proud of our diversity, and the diversity in the community that we represent and are based in – we will not let hatred divide us, or our game."

Hereford stated: "As a club, we will not stand for any discriminatory behaviour. Any individual found responsible will be dealt with in the sternest possible manner, including police involvement as necessary."

Hereford boss Caddis called the incident 'a disgrace'

Hereford manager and former Scotland international Paul Caddis: "Absolute disgrace. Disgrace. Not welcome in society, not welcome at football clubs. If you want to act like that and use language like that, don't come back to this football club. We have worked tirelessly as a football club the last couple of years to make it the best experience possible for people. We're human beings, we're human beings first and foremost. Nowadays, I don't know what it is in society, people think they can pay what they want, come through the door, and all rules go out the window.

"It's a disgrace. An absolute disgrace. We stand by Sporting Khalsa and their goalkeeper. I was the first one to suggest that we make a stance. I don't think it's right. We've got black players in our team. I don't know who it is, what has gone through their mind? I think he has been ejected and identified. We don't want people like that at our football club. That is not a representation of our supporters. But sadly, today it is. Because he was there with a Hereford badge, he was representing our football club, and I hope the book gets thrown at him – I really do."

He added: "My point was, let's make a stance now. This is [happening] far too often, whether it's step four, step two, Premier League. Whatever it is, make a stance. It's 2025. I'm fed up with hiding behind social media accounts and all the rest. Someone has to do something. I think we should be proud as players, staff and the supporters that came along. The right decision was made, the right decision was made. We are fully behind Sporting Khalsa, we are fully behind their goalkeeper. I went and apologised on behalf of the football club."

When will Sporting Khalsa vs Hereford take place?

FA are yet to announce a revised date for the abandoned fixtures. At the time the match stopped, Khalsa were training by 2-1.

Late signing at West Ham could see Lucas Paqueta 2.0 arrive

da betsul: It's kitchen sink time in the January transfer window and it's no secret that West Ham United are looking to bolster their squad this week.

da aviator aposta: David Moyes welcomed Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan last week to add some mettle to the centre of the park and now the focus has shifted to the offensive ranks, with Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta all sidelined, the latter until March.

Offers have been knocked back for young Ghanaian whiz Ibrahim Osman and Sunderland's Jack Clarke, but now the Hammers appear to be closing in on a new winger before Thursday's deadline.

The latest on West Ham's chase to sign Jota

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported at the beginning of the week that West Ham had been pushing to sign Al-Ittihad's Portuguese winger Jota on loan following discussions on Monday.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

Said Benrahma is closing on a move to Lyon and this will be crucial to a move, and though Jota is the top target, a solution to his staggering £200k-per-week salary in Saudi Arabia is proving complicated.

Indeed, new reports on Tuesday afternoon indicate that a deal is now looking more unlikely. Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has the latest.

How Jota compares to Lucas Paqueta

West Ham won the Europa Conference League last season and have been in fine fettle this term, currently sixth in the Premier League and through to the knockout phase of the Europa League, but two league draws and an untimely FA Cup exit against Bristol City have made for an inauspicious start to 2024.

With Paqueta not slated for a return any time soon either, it's understandable that some additional firepower is needed at the London Stadium, and Jota has the qualities to make a marked impact in the Premier League, once praised for his “unlimited” talent by former coach Joao Tralhao.

Former Celtic winger Jota.

Signing for Al-Ittihad from Celtic in a £25m move last summer, the "exciting" Jota – as he was labelled by former Spurs man Alan Hutton – has been limited to just 11 appearances in all competitions due to Saudi Pro League restrictions precluding more than eight foreign players from being named in a squad; he has not started a league fixture.

Nonetheless, the 24-year-old was described as a "revelation" north of the border by ex-Scotland boss Alex McLeish and racked up 27 goal contributions from 43 matches under then-Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou last season, now leading Tottenham Hotspur from the dugout.

Speaking of Spurs, the Irons' London rivals have been linked with a move for Jota ever since Postecoglou's appointment but now appear set to miss out on his signature in a deal that could hand Rush Green its next version of Paqueta.

Indeed, in June 2022, French outlet L'Equipe – via the Evening Standard – reported that Tottenham were frontrunners for Paqueta's services, with the Brazilian playmaker looking for a move away from Lyon.

Well, two months later West Ham prevailed and completed the signing of the Brazilian star in a club-record £51m deal, and with the 26-year-old having now posted ten goals and 13 assists across 68 appearances – winning the Conference League and actually playing the defence-splitting pass for Bowen's last-gasp winner – he's been a huge success.

Paqueta has been lauded for his “mind-boggling” technical ability by erstwhile teammate Declan Rice and is undoubtedly one of the silkiest, most artful attacking midfielders in the Premier League, and Jota could be the second blow to hurt Tottenham and boost Moyes' own mission this week.

Wilson may not win back Newcastle place

Callum Wilson may not be a ‘main player’ at Newcastle United going forward, insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Wilson hasn’t featured for Newcastle in 2022, having sustained a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the end of December.

Prior to that, he’d started every game for which he was available in the early months of the campaign.

Despite his lengthy absence, Wilson remains the Magpies’ top scorer with six goals, and he also led the way last season with 12.

The Englishman said recently that he hoped to be back in action by the end of this month, or the beginning of May.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Jones says that Newcastle are keen to get Wilson back in the side, but raised doubts about his longevity at St James’ Park.

“They obviously want him back, but I don’t think Callum Wilson is going to be a main player in this team next season, to be honest,” he said.

The verdict

This comes as something of a surprise given Wilson’s goalscoring exploits.

Graeme Jones, who took charge of Newcastle in the brief period between Steve Bruce’s sacking and Eddie Howe’s arrival, has labelled the ‘fantastic’ no. 9 ‘the best matchday finisher’ he’s coached.

What’s more, his £25million replacement Chris Wood has struggled, scoring only one non-penalty goal across his first 14 appearances.

However, the Magpies seem to have their eyes on recruiting younger talent in the position.

They’ve been linked with 19-year-old Reims striker Hugo Ekitike and 22-year-old Benfica hitman Darwin Nunez, and these may be the kind of forwards they want to build around.

Vivell now persuading Amorim for Man Utd to sign £69m Gyokeres alternative

Manchester United head scout Christopher Vivell is now pushing for Ruben Amorim to sign a “phenomenal” Viktor Gyokeres alternative, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has revealed.

Man Utd set to miss out on Gyokeres

Man United had been given renewed hope of potentially winning the race for Gyokeres, with it being revealed they were closing in on an agreement over a transfer fee last week, but they are now set to miss out on the striker.

In fact, journalist Duncan Castles has played down reports that United even made a move for the Sweden international in the first place, stating: “I’m told by sources at Manchester United that that’s not true, and also by people close to Gyokeres that it’s absolutely not true, and even if it were true, Gyokeres would not go to Manchester United.

“He has chosen to go to Arsenal, and he will continue to force that move.”

With the Sweden international set to move to the Emirates Stadium, Amorim will now have to move on to alternative targets, and Vivell has now given his backing to a striker he knows well.

That is according to Bailey, in an interview with The Boot Room, who states Man Utd’s head scout is now pushing for Amorim to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. It is claimed that Amorim was previously sceptical about Sesko, however, Vivell has now eased those concerns.

Bailey said: “Despite Amorim’s uncertainty due to his age, Christopher Vivell – who knows Sesko from his Red Bull days – has given his backing internally. I am told that he firmly believes that he is actually very mature – not dissimilar in his mentality to Erling Haaland and this has really eased some concerns United might have had.

The transfer expert also reveals that talks have been held with Sesko’s entourage, saying: “His people, along with intermediaries, have been gauging the interest and talking to clubs to assess their situation, and clubs in England have been spoken to, including Manchester United.”

"Phenomenal" Sesko could be ideal Gyokeres alternative

Arsenal deliberated over whether to sign Sesko or Gyokeres for quite some time, indicating that little separates the two centre-forwards, and the Slovenian has proven he could be the ideal alternative option.

The Leipzig star has maintained a solid goal record across the past three seasons, impressing for RB Salzburg in the 2022-23 campaign before going on to establish himself at Bundesliga level.

Not only that, but scout Antonio Mango clearly holds the 22-year-old in very high regard, having lauded him as “phenomenal” in the past, while Fabrizio Romano praised his ability to carry on delivering despite Leipzig enduring a tough 2024-25 season.

A deal for Sesko will not be cheap, with it being claimed a deal could amount to €80m (£69m), but there are clear signs he could go on to be a top striker.

Lionel Messi explains how he deals with opponents 'b*thcing at you' for Inter Miami as Argentine legend reveals he 'gets hot' during MLS action

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has explained how he deals with opposition players "b*tching and fighting" with him during Major League Soccer games.

Messi been a revelation for Inter MiamiOpposition players try to wind him upArgentine explains how he deals with thatWHAT HAPPENED?

Since Messi joined Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, there has been a target on the Argentinian legend's back. Opponents want to be the player that got under the 36-year-old's skin or got the better of him on the pitch. That has led to some confrontations but the former Barcelona star has now spoken about how he tries to keep calm in the heat of battle.

Advertisement(C)GettyImagesWHAT LIONEL MESSI SAID

The Argentine said, via InfoBae: "There are moments when you obviously get hot and react in the way you can. There are moments that you don't control. The heart rate is so high. We all want to win and we try to do our best for that, so you react as best you can But being hotter or less hot has no influence on the game. I think it doesn't change what I do. But hey, I always say that everything that happens on the field stays there. Anything can happen, b*tching at you, fighting with you, it has to stop there and end and it can happen."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi has been outstanding for Inter Miami, but also the MLS as well. He led the Herons to their first-ever trophy with the Leagues Cup triumph and now they sit top of the Eastern Conference, whereas a year ago they were languishing at the bottom of the table. Attendances, revenues, and eyeballs are up in MLS off the back of his arrival and it seems he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Messi has now joined up with the Argentina squad ahead of Copa America. The legendary forward will be looking to lead his side to continental glory, though he will be missing a string of MLS fixtures over the coming weeks.

Danielle Wyatt half-century sets up 42-run win for England over West Indies

An excellent knock by Danielle Wyatt propelled England to a convincing 42-run victory in the second T20I against West Indies at Northampton. The victory gives the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series after the opening match, also in Northampton, was washed out on Tuesday and marks their 14th win in a row across all formats.England, who were scarcely challenged in sweeping their three-match ODI series against West Indies, didn’t have things all their own way in this match, however. A defiant 43 off 34 balls by Stacy-Ann King, combined with a glittering cameo from Chedean Nation, who scored 32 off 20, put the England bowlers under some pressure for a while. But they responded well to claim key wickets at the right time, assisted by some sharp fielding and, in particular, typically excellent glove work by wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor. The same could not be said for West Indies’ fielding. Described after the first ODI by captain Stafanie Taylor as “atrocious”, the fielding which had improved somewhat in the two matches that followed, reverted in this match with a rash of errors resulting in missed opportunities. But it was Wyatt’s brilliant 81 off 55 balls that set England on their way to 180 for 6, their highest T20I score against West Indies. Opening alongside Amy Jones while Tammy Beuamont dropped to No. 3, Wyatt’s 10 fours were beautifully struck. She dug in as Jones fell for 37 – which included four fours and a big six – when Chinelle Henry made up for dropping Wyatt at extra cover by enticing Jones to drag on.Beaumont was out for just two when Afy Fletcher came into the attack with immediate effect, her fuller ball tempting Beaumont to try pushing it down the ground only to send it back to the bowler, who took a sharp catch low to her left on her follow-through.Nat Sciver contributed 31 off 18 deliveries before she was bowled by Hayley Matthews, who also accounted for Wyatt eventually. Wyatt, who had just lofted Shamilia Connell through long-on for four, edged the next ball from Connell to Matthews at backward point.”Rob [England coach Mark Robinson] said, ‘go out and express yourself,’ and I did,” Wyatt told Sky Sports. “That’s my job to go out and try and get the team off to a good total. Amy Jones has done really well, Tammy Beaumont, so there’s competition for places at the minute, so everyone’s got to perform.”Katherine Brunt came in up the order but didn’t last long and Heather Knight reached 22 off 11 before she was run out by some tidy work from Karishma Ramharack. The England captain felt some pain in her hamstring following her innings which prevented her from fielding and meant Anya Shrubsole took on the skipper’s duties. The move was later described as precautionary while the extent of the problem was being assessed.West Indies began their chase poorly, stumbling to 19 for 2. They were 58 for 3 when Stafanie Taylor, who had survived an earlier run out chance, tried to run on an overthrow and was caught out of her ground as Brunt threw in to Sarah Taylor.King stood firm, however, assisted by Nation, who hit Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone for sixes, the former travelling some 75 metres down the ground. King was dropped on 41 by Jones but only added two more runs before she skied Linsey Smith to deep square leg, where Wyatt was loitering just inside the boundary to swallow the catch. When Nation was run out by Fran Wilson gathering well at mid-wicket and sending the ball back to Smith at the bowler’s end, West Indies looked in trouble again and a sharp stumping by Sarah Taylor to remove Henry all but put the result beyond doubt. Smith and Brunt claimed two wickets each. The final match will be played in Derby on Tuesday.

Tim Murtagh six-for delivers Middlesex's first win of the season

Veteran paceman Tim Murtagh steered Middlesex to their first Specsavers County Championship victory of the campaign, a 127-run success against Worcestershire, with a six-wicket haul at Blackfinch New Road.Murtagh, who is 38 in August, struck twice before lunch, produced another triple breakthrough after the resumption and he went on to finish with figures of 6 for 51 and a match analysis of 35-16-76-8. Worcestershire, who had been set a 353 target after Middlesex declared overnight, were bowled out for 225 in 73.3 overs. It was the perfect return to county action for Murtagh after his recent international commitments with Ireland and the 33rd five-wicket haul of his career.Middlesex fully deserved their 20-point haul and fit again captain Dawid Malan produced the game’s outstanding batting performance with scores of 45 and 124 on a wicket where the ball nipped around over all four days. For Worcestershire, opener Daryl Mitchell made a return to form for the home side with a defiant 129-ball half-century and Ross Whiteley also produced strong resistance with a late order fifty. But for the home side it was a second successive setback following the defeat at Lancashire and they were second best with bat and ball for the majority of the game.Middlesex declared at their overnight total of 287 for 6 with John Simpson unbeaten on 30 and Toby Roland-Jones 11 not out.Murtagh took the new ball and struck in successive overs. Tom Fell was undone by a ball which bounced on him and nicked to Sam Robson at first slip with 5 on the board. Then George Rhodes departed lbw for a duck to a Murtagh delivery which nipped back sharply.Mitchell and Callum Ferguson tried to rebuild the innings and the latter needed 21 balls to get off the mark before reeling off a succession of boundaries. They steered Worcestershire to 91 for 2 at lunch but Murtagh came back into the attack after the resumption to re-assert a position of authority for Middlesex.Ferguson went for a drive to his first delivery of the afternoon from Murtagh and was pouched by Steve Eskinazi who held onto a head high catch at second slip. Two balls later Riki Wessels pushed forward and only succeeded in finding Malan in the gully region.Mitchell went to his half-century – containing nine fours – with a single off Murtagh but in his next over dragged a delivery on to his stumps.Murtagh had Whiteley dropped on 11 at third slip and the left hander profited from his let-off, mixing defence with some trademark attacking strokes. The wickets continued to tumble at the other end with Ben Cox and Ed Barnard both caught behind off Tom Helm and Toby Roland-Jones respectively. Victim number six for Murtagh came when he defeated the defensive push of Worcestershire skipper Joe Leach who was bowled.Whiteley’s half-century came up from 90 deliveries with seven fours. But the end came quickly as Josh Tongue was taken at second slip off Helm and finally Whiteley, whose 112-ball knock contained nine fours, edged James Harris to first slip with 22.3 overs remaining.
