Marie Kelly, Gwenan Davies half-centuries lead Sparks' win over Sunrisers

ECB Reporters Network10-Sep-2021Half-centuries for Marie Kelly and Gwenan Davies saw Central Sparks to a six-wicket win over Sunrisers in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.Kelly scored 58 and Davies 50, both at almost a run a ball as they made light work of chasing a victory target of 205 in a game reduced to 42 overs-a-side by early morning rain.Earlier Cordelia Griffith was the mainstay of Sunrisers’ tally of 204-7 with 69, Ria Fackrell taking 3-30 for the visitors.Related

Sunrisers’ openers Griffith and Grace Scrivens survived a testing powerplay, the former being given a life on 11 when Sparks’ wicketkeeper Chloe Hill failed to cling onto an outside edge off the fiery Izzy Wong. Scrivens too was reprieved on 18, Hill grassing a second chance when standing up to Clare Boycott. The second drop didn’t prove costly, Anisha Patel trapping Scrivens lbw for 26 with the score on 67.Griffith, however, made the most of her life, mixing powerful drives with deft touch to reach 50 in 76 balls and with Alice Macleod lending valuable support, the pair added 77 for the second wicket. At 144 for 1, Sunrisers looked set for a big score, but when Eve Jones removed Griffith, caught at cover, momentum shifted Sparks’ way.Fran Wilson and Naomi Dattani went cheaply, bowled by the impressive Fackrell who would later peg back Kelly Castle’s off-stump. And it needed Macleod’s run-a-ball 46 to get the hosts beyond 200.Chasing 205, Jones and Kelly were quickly into stride, the latter especially driving and pulling powerfully as 50 came up in the 10th over.Jones too looked in the groove and it was something of a surprise when on 31 she drove loosely at Scrivens and was caught at cover.Kelly though motored on to a run-a-ball 50 while debutant Davina Perrin, 15 just two days ago announced herself with a gorgeous straight drive for four.Sunrisers added to their struggles when dropping Kelly twice in successive overs, Castle and Kate Coppack the unlucky bowlers.Coppack bowled the opener soon afterwards when she missed an attempted scoop and a stunning catch at mid-off by Macleod ended Perrin’s promising innings on 20 with 70 still needed. However, Davies steadied any nerves with a mature and increasingly fluent knock, a six and seven fours carrying her to 50 in 57 balls. She holed out with one needed, but Sparks romped home with more than four overs to spare.

"I was ready to give up… I hated the game"

The death of a friend and team-mate made Surrey keeper Steven Davies wonder if he wanted to continue playing

Ed Kemp23-Apr-2013″After the death of Tom Maynard in June last year, Steven Davies suffered from depression. The daily demands of the county game meant there was no escape from the tragedy, and Davies sought help from a specialist, recommended to him by a friend. It helped a bit, but playing cricket no longer felt important, and certainly wasn’t fun. Although his glovework remained competent, Davies’ form with the bat completely disintegrated – having passed 1000 first-class runs in each of the previous three seasons, he managed just 438 in 2012, 104 of which came in one innings against Somerset in May.”The cricket environment was the last place that I wanted to be,” Davies said. “Every time I went to a cricket ground it would remind me of Tom and I didn’t want that. I was out in the middle not really wanting to be there. The county season is relentless and it just kept building up. There was an occasion when we played Notts away [in the Championship in July] where I rang my parents to tell them that I was going to quit, that I’d had enough of cricket. I was ready to give it all up, because I just didn’t see it coming to an end. I was in a bad place, I hated the game.”That call prompted his parents to visit him in Nottingham. Together they talked things through and agreed he would see it through to the end of the season, then take the winter off, and attempt to “find the love again”.”I just couldn’t wait for the last game of the season, just to get away from it,” he said. I’ve always loved playing cricket, so it was a strange feeling, to really hate the game that much. Looking back, I should have taken the break during the season. But I felt I had a responsibility to keep on going to try and look after the younger players that have come into the squad [although only 26, Davies sees himself as an experienced head in the Surrey dressing room]. In the end it didn’t benefit me and it didn’t benefit the team, really.”As well as seeing the specialist, Davies was also on medication, though it gave him headaches and he came off it as soon as he’d got through the county campaign. “I’m not seeing anyone anymore. It was the family time that I needed. I just spent three-and-a-half months with them, forgot about cricket for a while, and that was the best therapy for me. I’m really glad I decided to take the winter off, because there gay people, so it’s just to say that we’re normal people, exactly the same as you. Being in the closet for so long and being in pro sport, I was worried about coming out, and now I have and I’ve seen the impact it’s had on some people. The response I got was amazing. I feel this resource can really change people’s lives, and it could even save a life.”So what now? “Back in love” with cricket, since Christmas, Davies has worked hard to get himself in nick for the season – and an attempt to reaffirm his England credentials. Though he was on the Pakistan tour to the UAE in early 2012, he hasn’t played international cricket since being dropped from the ODI team just before the 2011 World Cup – and this year he’s targeting a return to the one-day set-up.”I just want to focus on getting back to where I was, on having a bloody good year and getting back into the England side. I’m really energised and excited for the year, and I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a good one.”No one would begrudge him. As a person, Davies has already had more to deal with than most cricketers his age. But as a player, the serious stuff could well be yet to come.

Speculation regarding a return to Apple TV+ for AFC Richmond has been raging for some time. Warner Bros executives are among those to have hinted at production starting early in 2025. It has now been confirmed that script writing should start “next year”.

Leading members of the cast and crew have been quick to air their excitement at news of Ted Lasso and Co coming back, with the likes of Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift said to have seen options taken up on their respective contracts.

WHAT PHIL DUNSTER SAID

Phil Dunster, who plays enigmatic striker Jamie Tartt, is yet to discover whether he will be involved in Season 4. He has, however, informed fans that more Lasso escapades are on the way, telling the podcast: “It’s been green-lit to write another series. It’s been announced that series 4 is going to be a thing. There’s been a commission to write the fourth series, whether that ends up being a show, I don't know. I don't know any of that stuff. I don't know if I'll be in it. There are certain members of the cast who have been re-upped, as it were. But yeah, I mean it's pretty good news I think in that it looks like it will happen. Season 4 is going be a thing. They start writing next year, I think. But yeah, other than that I don't really know anything.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Dunster added on the uncertainty surrounding his role: “Well, I'm doing a comedy with Bill Lawrence, who was one of the creators of Ted. So I'm doing that next. That's my next thing over on HBO. So I’m not one of those people who’s been re-upped. But also I say that with total love and acceptance that shows move on and things happen. I think that there was some belief at this time that it's because I had booked something else, that was [the reason] that I wasn't doing it. That wasn't the case.

“I would always pick up that phone and I would always say ‘How high?’ if Jason said ‘jump’. But yeah, so I don't know. Who knows? I think that there is a world where something like that happens. I don't know which direction they're taking the show in, but there's lots of favourites of the characters who will still be in it. ‘We move’, as the kids say these days.”

Imagine him & Rothwell: Leeds must avoid howler selling Farke’s "iron" star

da bet sport: Leeds United completed their second outfield signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week as they confirmed the arrival of Joe Rothwell.

da betano casino: The central midfielder has joined the club on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth, and follows Joe Rodon in signing ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Rothwell was part of the Southampton team that earned promotion out of the Championship, beating Leeds in the play-off final, during a loan spell at St. Mary's during the second half of last term.

The 29-year-old maestro produced four goals in 16 league appearances for the Saints and may look to bring an attacking spark to the squad from midfield.

Leeds must now avoid a big howler during the summer transfer window by ensuring that they do not cash in on Glen Kamara, who could be a dream partner for Rothwell.

Transfer interest in Glen Kamara

Football Insider recently reported that Ligue 1 side Rennes have submitted a contract proposal to the Finland international after talks with his representatives.

The outlet claimed that a transfer to the French team has been gathering 'momentum' after those negotiations between the club and the players.

It also revealed that Leeds are willing to cash in on the former Arsenal youth prospect, but only for a 'significant' fee. It remains to be seen exactly how much they would deem to be a significant amount of money.

The Whites, who reportedly paid Rangers £5m for Kamara last summer, must now fight to keep hold of the Finnish star, as he could thrive alongside Rothwell.

Why Glen Kamara and Joe Rothwell are made for each other

They could be perfect for each other as Daniel Farke's midfield tank has the athleticism and defensive attributes to make up for the Cherries loanee's struggles in those departments.

Meanwhile, Rothwell has the potential to make attacking contributions from a midfield position in a way that Kamara has so far been unable to do in West Yorkshire.

As you can see in the table above, the Englishman lost the majority of his battles on the deck and in the air with Southampton, whilst the Finnish maestro, who ex-boss Neil McCann claimed is "made of iron", won the majority of his duels.

However, Rothwell did score an eye-catching four goals in just 16 games from midfield, starting just four of those matches, whilst Kamara failed to score a single goal.

In the 2021/22 campaign for Blackburn Rovers, the new Leeds signing assisted ten goals, created ten 'big chances', and averaged 1.7 key passes per game in 36 Championship starts, which shows that the potential is also there for him to offer quality as a creator.

These statistics show that the pair could combine to form a fantastic pairing due to Rothwell's ability to make attacking contributions and Kamara's athletic, physical, defensive play, whilst they both retain possession at an exceptional rate with their 92% and 93% pass accuracy respectively.

Therefore, it would be a big howler to cash in on him this summer as the club would be allowing a player with the quality to help their latest signing thrive to depart.

Liverpool now "super confident" of signing "fantastic" £65m Euro 2024 star

Liverpool are believed to be "super confident" of completing the signing of a "fantastic" player in the summer transfer window, with a £65m deal possible.

Liverpool transfer news

With Euro 2024 done and dusted, attention is now more likely to turn to transfers, with Arne Slot no doubt desperate to bring in new players who can aid his start to life at Anfield.

Two England players who have been linked with summer moves to Liverpool are Marc Guehi and Anthony Gordon, both of whom have been a part of their Euro 2024 journey this summer. The former is a boyhood Reds supporter, but Newcastle United are thought to be desperate to keep hold of him.

Liverpool target Anthony Gordon in action for England at EURO 2024.

It has also been claimed that the Merseysiders have made progress in their efforts to sign Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio, with a £52m transfer mooted. Centre-back additions are vital, with Slot's squad looking slightly light in that area, and the Portuguese could be a perfect addition.

Eberechi Eze has been mentioned as a possible target for Liverpool, too, should Slot feel that the Crystal Palace star could be an upgrade on Luis Diaz out on the left-hand side.

Liverpool believe they could sign "fantastic" ace

According to a fresh claim from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are "super confident" of completing the signing of Guehi in the summer transfer window, with the Crystal Palace and England defender a wanted man after impressing at the Euros.

The Reds are "set to ramp up their pursuit" of the 23-year-old, with sources close to the club saying they "know what they need to do" to get their man. He is valued at £65m by the Eagles.

Guehi's rise in recent months has been huge, considering he has gone from being a good Premier League player to arguably England's most consistent performer at Euro 2024.

The 23-year-old filled in expertly alongside John Stones, playing a big role in the Three Lions reaching the final, with an average of 2.2 aerial duel wins and two clearances per game. He also completed 93.5% of his passes, while Kyle Walker has heaped praise on him.

"Marc, I thought he was fantastic. He didn't put foot wrong and hopefully that has got his feelings right now and settle the nerves a little bit, and we can form a good partnership along that back line."

For these reasons, it is easy to see why Guehi would be a good signing for Liverpool, with his age meaning he could even be looked at as an option to eventually lead the defence when 33-year-old Virgil van Dijk eventually departs.

That being said, the Dutchman is also a left-sided centre-back, so fitting both he and Guehi into the team from the off may not be easy, which could suggest a right-sided signing makes more sense currently, unless one of the players wants to change sides.

There is also a risk that the Palace man's performances this summer could actually lead to him being over-priced, so it is important that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are convinced that he is their top target.

Buy back and sell on clause revealed as Willy Kambwala set to leave Man Utd

A Manchester United player who Erik ten Hag has called "brilliant" is close to sealing a move away from Old Trafford this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd transfer news

While the Red Devils are yet to complete a summer signing to date, it does look as though Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Dan Ashworth and Ten Hag are working hard on completing some significant business. Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee looks the most likely next addition for United, with a move for the Dutchman seemingly edging closer all the time, but other players have been also been linked in recent days.

Alongside Zirkzee, Crystal Palace and England midfielder Eberechi Eze has been named as a reported target for United, following an impressive season for the Eagles that saw him stand out as one of their key men. There is plenty of interest in the 26-year-old from other top Premier League clubs, though.

The Red Devils are also rumoured to have turned their attention to Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, although whether the club feel the need to bring in both the Englishman and Zirkzee remains to be seen.

With Luke Shaw and injury-prone figure who isn't getting any younger, another left-back needs to be looked at this summer, and Chelsea ace Ben Chilwell has been linked with a switch to United. His stock has arguably fallen of late, having failed to make England's Euro 2024 squad, but he may feel that a move to Old Trafford could give him a new lease of life.

"Brilliant" Man Utd player close to exit

Taking to X, Romano said the Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala is now close to joining Villarreal on a permanent deal, bringing an end to his time at Old Trafford: "Villarreal are closing in on deal to sign Willy Kambwala from Manchester United! Understand it will be a permanent transfer for fee around €10m for 2004 born CB."

Romano then provided more details on Saturday morning: "€10m package, add-on included. Contract until June 2029. Medical tomorrow (Sunday). Man United have buy back clause and sell-on clause. Here we go, confirmed."

It is a shame to see Kambwala leave, but assuming his exit is confirmed soon, he should be remembered for some passionate and effective performances last season, filling in amid a host of injury problems at centre-back.

Ten Hag is clearly an admirer of the £7,500-a-week-earning 19-year-old, too, saying: "[Kambwala] has been training a while with us and progressing well. The next generation need to step in and he is doing brilliant. The challenge for him is doing it consistently."

The fact that United are seemingly happy to let Kambwala leave does suggest that new signings are coming in at the back, with Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite looking like the standout options currently. Signing two of the three could be perfect, however, considering Lisandro Martinez feels like the only genuinely excellent option there currently. Everton interested in move for "ridiculously good" £90,000-p/w defender

Fresh faces expected at Goodison this summer

Attacking players are also high on the Toffees' wishlist with the club eager to make moves for young forward players Wilfried Gnonto and Armando Broja. The former has been linked with Everton since last summer whilst the latter appears nailed on to be leaving Chelsea during this window.

The higher ups at Goodison Park also have a defensive player on their minds with Hull City's Jacob Greaves long seen as the likely successor to Jarrad Branthwaite. The young defender appears destined to be playing his football in the Premier League next season, however Everton will face competition from Ipswich for his signature.

With Dyche and co looking to strengthen in all areas of the pitch, the Toffees are now interested in a move for a highly rated defensive player.

Toffees keen on Man United man this summer

As first reported by HITC, Everton are interested in a move for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The outlet reports that the current Man United man's future at Old Trafford is uncertain with Erik Ten Hag reportedly eyeing a move for a new right back this summer.

The 26-year-old joined United in a £50 million move from Crystal Palace back in 2019, and currently commands a weekly wage of £90,000 per capology, however has gone on to struggle to maintain a consistent place in the Red Devils' starting eleven.

Despite his problems at United, Wan-Bissaka has maintained his accolade as one of the league's best one on one defenders. Whilst some modern fullbacks look to spend more time attacking than defending, the Englishman is an out-and-out defensive presence.

Following Wan-Bissaka's exceptional defensive display against Brighton in the 2023 FA Cup semi-final, then Leicester City star James Maddison said of the defender (via the Guardian): "AWB is ridiculously good at 1 v 1 defending.

“Probably the best in the world bar none. So many wingers run out of ideas when playing directly against him.”

Whilst it is one thing for an individual's performance to earn plaudits from their teammates or manager, it is a whole other kind of accolade when other team's players take notice and sing your praises.

This quote from Maddison shows just how well regarded Wan-Bisakka is when it comes to the art of defending. With Dyche well known for his defensive style, adding the 26-year-old to the Toffees' backline would be an excellent acquisition.

Awesome in Australia: Kumble's marathon in Sydney vs Kohli's fight in Perth

Anil Kumble – 8-141 & 4-138 in Sydney, 2004

Match drawn, series drawn 1-1Anil Kumble’s match-winning ability was unquestionable at home but he hadn’t earned a similar reputation overseas. This Australia tour was an opportunity to improve that aspect of his game. Having started the tour on the bench, he replaced an injured Harbhajan Singh in the second Test. By the time the final match began at the SCG, with the series level 1-1, Kumble had bowled the most overs by an Indian bowler and taken a five-for in the famous win in Adelaide. In Sydney, after India posted 705 in the first innings, Kumble bowled 46.5 overs to pick up 8 for 141, his second-best haul after his perfect ten, and give India a lead of 231, which they extended to 442 before declaring late on the fourth day.Bowling another 42 overs in Australia’s second innings, Kumble went on to take 4 for 138 – his match-haul of 12 was his best overseas – but India were only able to take six wickets in total, falling agonisingly short of what would have been their maiden series win down under.By Shashank KishoreWatch the highlights of these performances on the Star Sports network at 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm IST, from October 25 onwards.Virat Kohli was batting on another level in Perth 2018•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Virat Kohli – 123 in Perth, 2018

India lost by 146 runs, series level 1-1Virat Kohli was already one of India’s greatest batters before 2018. He stepped up to an even more rarefied level that year, scoring 1322 runs at an average of 55.08 over 24 innings, of which 22 were played in South Africa, England and Australia.Conditions in all three tours were hard on batters, but the more challenging they became, the more Kohli seemed to relish them. When he walked in to bat in Perth, everything must have looked familiar. India had lost the toss and conceded a bigger total than they should have, bowling well but not without spells of releasing pressure. Then they lost early wickets. In similar circumstances, Kohli had scored 153 at Centurion and 149 at Edgbaston. Now, from 8 for 2, he proceeded to play an even better innings. This was a proper trampoline of a pitch, and Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were routinely getting the ball to rear throat-high from just back of a length. Kohli negotiated the vertical threat expertly, though not without suffering blows to his arm and ribs, but the standout feature of his innings was how well he dealt with Australia’s attempts to sucker him with full balls after pushing him back.Almost every time there was an opportunity to drive, he did so pristinely, down the ground or through the covers with a decisive front-foot stride. A 20th century version of this list would have undoubtedly contained Sachin Tendulkar’s 114 in Perth in 1992. Kohli’s innings came at Perth Stadium and not the WACA, and just as the new ground seamlessly carried forward the old one’s legacy of pace and bounce, a new master had carried forward an old master’s legacy.Karthik Krishnaswamy

Rashid Khan on cameo: My mindset was not to play big shots but find gaps

Rashid helped the Qalandars score 16 off the final over, a task never achieved in PSL history previously

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jun-2021When Rashid Khan walked to the crease on the opening night of the resumption of the PSL, the Lahore Qalandars needed 22 from eight balls. Tim David was facing up to the last two balls of Hasan Ali’s thus-far excellent 19th over, where just one run had been conceded till then. David hit a straight six down the ground to end the over, leaving Rashid with the strike for the last over.Sixteen needed to win – no team in the PSL had ever chased down that many – but still, no big hits on Rashid’s mind.”The plan that I went to the crease with, my mindset was, I am not going to play big shots here because if I did that I could’ve gotten out,” Rashid said post-match. “When I got there I thought I’ll just try and find some gaps here. The bowler was new also. If he bowled in my areas my thinking was just to try and hit gaps.”Related

Shadab Khan, Islamabad United’s captain, chose to go with Hussain Talat for that last over, a decision that caused surprise at the time – Shadab himself had an over left – and was criticised post-fact of the loss. Spinners don’t often bowl last overs in T20s and the dew played a part in Shadab’s decision not to bowl himself. Shadab said after the game he hadn’t bowled himself out earlier because it would have pitted him against a left-handed batter at the crease but it also later emerged that an injury to Faheem Ashraf forced them into a recalculation. That, and that United do believe Talat is a legitimate death-overs option (he has only bowled at the death 10 innings out of 30 in the PSL and for Pakistan, but more often in the National T20). His first ball, however, a slower offcutter gave Rashid exactly the kind of room outside off stump which he loves, as well as just the start to that final over the Qalandars needed. Rashid lofted it over cover for four and didn’t look back; he repeated the shot next ball and a fortuitous third boundary left them with a simpler task.”I was planning on looking for those gaps, but it so happened I got three boundaries off those first three balls and then we needed four off three. Definitely, in games and situations like this, you have to keep a cool mind. You have to stay relaxed. When you need six sixes, you have to go for it. Here I just needed two proper shots and you win the game.”The cameo sealed the Player-of-the-Match award for Rashid too, his unbeaten, five-ball 15 the cherry on top of bowling figures of 4-0-9-1. Rashid had initially signed on for just a two-game contract when the season began in February-March, before joining up with Afghanistan for international duty and then to the T20 Blast with Sussex. He chose instead to extend his contract and stay on with Qalandars.”It really was a team effort for us tonight, everyone took responsibility for the game. One guy doesn’t win you a game. The most important spell was [James] Faulkner at the top, Haris [Rauf] bowled really well through the middle, then Sohail [Akhtar] took responsibility with the bat, and Mohammad Hafeez and Ben Dunk. In T20s, you don’t win with one guy, the entire team has to do their bits collectively for it.”

West Brom gem who left for £4m is now worth more than entire squad combined

da betsson: West Bromwich Albion are currently competing to climb back up the Championship table in an attempt to join the race to gain promotion to the Premier League this season.

da marjack bet: A 3-2 win over Swansea last time out has the Baggies in 12th place in the table, four points off the play-offs, and there is plenty of football left to be played.

Aune Heggebo, who joined the club in the summer, scored twice to take his tally to six goals in the Championship this season, per Sofascore, and he is currently one of the most valuable players in the squad.

West Brom's most valuable players

Per Transfermarkt’s valuation system, West Brom’s current first-team squad has a combined value of roughly £71m, and Heggebo contributes to around £5m of that total.

The most valuable player in the squad, unsurprisingly, is central midfielder Isaac Price, who has scored five goals and provided two assists for the Baggies in the league, per Sofascore.

Transfermarkt value the Northern Ireland international at around £10.5m and there have been no recent reports to suggest how much the club value him at internally, amid reported interest from Leeds and Crystal Palace.

That outing in the FA Cup made Rogers the fourth-youngest player in the club’s history, and the youngest ever in the FA Cup, per Transfermarkt, and Manchester City clearly took note of that.

Things did not work out for the attacking midfielder at The Etihad, unfortunately, but he has since made his way to Aston Villa, via Middlesbrough, and is now a fully-fledged England international.

Rogers has scored 20 goals and provided 21 assists in 89 appearances for Villa, per Transfermarkt, and has scored one goal in 12 caps for the Three Lions.

Because of his impressive form for club and country, the former Baggies youngster is attracting interest from elsewhere and has been given a mammoth valuation.

TEAMtalk reported in November that Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, PSG, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Tottenham have all registered interest in the attacker and claimed that Villa offered Rogers a new deal with a £100m release clause, shortly before it became official that he had put pen to paper on an improved contract.

Towards the end of November, The Mirror reported that the Villans are said to value the England international at a whopping £100m, although they did not mention it as part of a release clause.

Whether you take it to be a release clause or how much Villa will demand from any interested clubs, Rogers appears to be valued at nine figures by the Premier League club, whilst West Brom’s squad is only worth around £71m between every first-team player.

There is no guarantee that he would have gone on to fulfill his potential at The Hawthorns, but it must be bittersweet for the club to see that one of their former players, who they lost for £4m, is now being valued at a staggering £100m, whilst their most valuable player is valued at just over a tenth of that.

The Baggies can only hope that they are able to persuade the next Rogers, should such a talent come through the academy again, to stay at the club, rather than pursue a move elsewhere.
