  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from Diario AS, highly-coveted Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi is attracting interest from Real Madrid. This comes after reports from England suggested that Arsenal were on the verge of triggering the Real Sociedad star's €60 million (£51m) release clause, with the deal described as "virtually completed."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid interest in Zubimendi comes from the club's desire to sign a ball-playing midfielder who's also good in defensive situations. While Los Blancos aren't sure about splashing €60m on the midfielder, the club's board are reportedly adamant they want to see a "Spanishisation" of the team, having lost key personnel such as Marco Asensio, Joselu, and Nacho – all Spaniards – in recent years. That is also partly the reason why the reigning Champions League winners are monitoring Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal are sure to enter the market for new signings in the summer, with two of their midfielders, Jorginho and Thomas Partey, out of contract at the end of the current campaign. As a result, the Gunners have not given up on their hopes of signing long-term target Zubimendi and will not shy away from triggering his €60m release clause. Newcastle forward Alexander Isak is another who has been strongly linked.

    WHAT NEXT?

It's not just Madrid and Arsenal who have been linked with the 26-year-old midfielder from the Basque country. Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester City have also been reported to be interested in the Spanish international.

While it remains to be seen where Zubimendi's future lies ahead of the 2025-26 season, he will be representing Spain during the international break. La Roja face Netherlands in a Nations League quarter-final, with the first leg scheduled for March 20.

'Like being back in 1980' – Enzo Maresca slammed for 'boring' tactics in Arsenal defeat as Chelsea told they should have stuck with Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea went down to Arsenal in the London derbyMaresca under scrutiny after just four wins in 13 PL gamesGallas believes Chelsea were better under PochettinoFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of Mikel Merino’s first-half header, at the Emirates on Sunday. The win solidified the Gunners’ second-place position, while Chelsea’s ambitions of securing a top-four finish took a major blow.

AdvertisementGOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea’s uninspired performance has become a recurring theme in recent weeks. Despite boasting a squad valued at over £1 billion, the team has been struggling for consistency since the turn of the year. Their poor run of form, which includes just four wins in their last 13 league matches, has raised serious questions about Maresca’s tactics and decision-making.

WHAT GALLAS SAID

One of the biggest criticisms of Chelsea’s approach under Maresca has been their possession-heavy style that often fails to translate into meaningful goal-scoring opportunities.

Gallas did not hold back in his assessment of Maresca’s system, describing it as a throwback to a different era. He was particularly baffled by the decision to play Reece James in midfield, likening the approach to something from decades ago.

Speaking to Gallas said: "It was man-to-man everywhere on the pitch, I was surprised that Reece James played as a midfielder and it was like being back in 1980. We are in 2025, how can you ask your players to do that? The defenders Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill looked scared on the ball and with more pressure from Arsenal they might’ve scored the second goal, the goal they did score was from a corner.

“For me, it was boring, especially for a London derby. I played so many of those games and it was more intense. Fans want to see the players fighting, running, and challenging, but nothing happened."

DID YOU KNOW?

Gallas believes that based on Chelsea’s recent performances, Mauricio Pochettino might have been the better option to lead the club. Pochettino was sacked in the summer of 2024 after he guided the Blues to a sixth-place finish.

“Looking at the performance against Arsenal, you’d say that Chelsea would be better off with Mauricio Pochettino," the former defender opined.

“What I saw of Chelsea against Arsenal, the system and how they played, I was a little bit disappointed. But right now I think Enzo Maresca is on the right path, they are still on course to qualify for the top four. Sometimes owners at big clubs are not patient.

“The new owners have made a lot of decisions until now when they don’t see results, now it’s up to Maresca to show that he is the manager Chelsea were looking for.”

  • WHAT HAPPENED

Chicago Fire FC has revealed their new secondary kit for the 2025 MLS season, officially named the “Municipal Kit.” The design draws inspiration from the iconic Chicago Municipal Device, a “Y”-shaped symbol found throughout the city on various structures and buildings. The Fire are set to launch the kit officially via a community day that is centered around the club in partnership with a vintage soccer shop, Saturdays Football.

"The Municipal Kit pays homage to the city of Chicago, featuring a subtle interlocking pattern reminiscent of the city’s Municipal Device symbol," the Fire said in a statement. "The Municipal Device – a Y-shaped symbol – is ubiquitous within Chicago, and represents the north, south, and main branches of the Chicago River, and their confluence at Wolf Point. The kit’s blue hues represent the waterways that have become integral to the local landscape and vitality of the city.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Created by Adidas, Chicago Fire FC's "Municipal Kit" is a striking homage to the city's architectural heritage. Thus the kit features a light blue base color, officially dubbed "Sky Tint," which serves as the base for the kit. The pattern, composed of interconnecting "Y" shapes, covers the entire front of the kit in navy blue and creates a visual effect that represents the Chicago River's branches. The Chicago Fire FC crest is displayed on the left chest while the primary sponsor, Carvana, is featured in regular and bold blue lettering across the middle of the chest.

The secondary sponsor, Magellan, is featured on the kit’s right sleeve while the Apple TV and MLS logo are on the left. As mentioned in the club’s statement, the Apple TV logo will be custom-designed for each MLS club this season and for Chicago, the patch will be in the club’s colors of Fire Red, White, and Chicago Flag Blue. Not only that, the Apple logo itself will surround a six-pointed red star that is synonymous with Chicago.

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR CHICAGO FIRE?

The Fire have played five of the seven games on their preseason schedule and have lost just once in the process, a 1-0 loss to LAFC. They still have to face the Las Vegas Lights and the LA Galaxy before the club can kick off their 2025 MLS season against Columbus Crew on February 22.

Former Man Utd player who publicly wants job under consideration by INEOS

Manchester United have a 51-year-old manager under consideration as a possible replacement for Erik ten Hag, according to a new report. The Red Devils are beginning their search for a new manager after the dismissal of the Dutchman on Monday morning, after being beaten 2-1 by West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

Ten Hag sacked: Man Utd now considering 37 y/o "great coach" as replacement

INEOS have pulled the trigger and are already lining up a new coach.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 28, 2024 Man Utd manager latest

United find themselves looking for a new manager after the decision to end Ten Hag’s reign after two and a half years at the club. The decision was made on Monday morning, with a statement confirming the decision and United placing their thanks and good luck to Ten Hag on record.

The Red Devils have been linked with several managers for a few weeks now. Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is one manager who has growing interest in his services. Meanwhile, Xavi has also emerged on the club’s radar in the last week, but it appears his chances of becoming the new manager are slim, as Xavi plans to wait until the summer before taking on his next job.

A new name that has come into the United hotseat is German national team manager Julian Nagelsmann. The German has been in charge of the national team since 2023, and now that the Red Devils are looking for a new manager, they could look to make a move for him.

But the options do not stop there for United, as they also have their eye on a former player of theirs as they weigh up the best move for them.

Former player under consideration for Man Utd return

According to Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United have former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær under consideration for a return to the club. The 51-year-old joined the Red Devils as a player in 1996 and enjoyed great success with the club right up until he left in 2007.

Solskjaer returned to Old Trafford in 2018 as caretaker manager, and his return saw a positive swing in results, and that earned him the permanent role. He was appointed manager in March 2019 and kept the role until November 2021, managing 168 games in total.

Since leaving United, Solskjaer has been out of management and has been working as a UEFA analyst since January of last year. Last month, Solskjaer admitted that he would be “open” to an Old Trafford return, and if he was offered a way back, he would say “yes”.

Now, according to this report, the Norwegian is under consideration for returning to the club, but it is unclear if he is viewed as a long-term replacement for Ten Hag or as a backroom staff member. Before taking over at Old Trafford, Solskjaer’s only other experience in management came at Molde, where he managed from 2011 to 2018 on and off, while he also had a spell as Cardiff City manager.

Relief for Ben Foakes after timely ton reassures him of Test worth

England wicketkeeper admits he is still learning to pace innings batting at No. 7

Vithushan Ehantharajah26-Aug-2022Ben Foakes admits fitting into this new England men’s Test side can be a struggle but hopes Test century number two is a sign he is going about it the right way.Foakes finished unbeaten on 113 on day two against South Africa at Old Trafford, as the hosts declared on 415 for 9 to establish a first-innings lead of 264. While it was by no means the kind of aggressive innings we have become used to under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the Surrey wicketkeeper reaching three figures from 206 deliveries, it was a vital contribution when England needed it most.It was an especially helpful knock alongside Stokes, who scored 103, as the pair put on 173 for the sixth wicket. Having come in on 147 for 5, still trailing the Proteas by four, the absorption of pressure and the subsequent accumulation of runs, which sped up when Foakes was batting with the tail, was a nod to a lot of introspection and hard work paying dividends for the 29-year-old.His first century came in his first innings in this format, back in November 2018 in Sri Lanka. Since then, he has established himself as a reliable No. 5 for Surrey: seven of his now 13 first-class hundreds have come for the county – he began his career at Essex, for whom he has three – at an average of 43. While he struggled at first to truly get to grips with batting lower for England, and adopting an altogether different mindset, this was a sizeable step in the right direction.”It’s a different role, at Surrey I just bat five and just play,” Foakes said. “When you get on quite challenging wickets batting at seven, obviously there’s a good chance you lose wickets quickly and you have to play a different way. I think for me it’s learning how to do that as well as I can. Just because it’s not my natural game. Finding a way to be able to, quite early on in my innings, put pressure back on the bowler rather than just batting.Related

  • Stokes, Foakes hundreds allow England to declare on 264-run lead

“When I bat at five hundreds are definitely something I think about, but at seven I think more about just trying to contribute because obviously you’re not going to get as many opportunities to get a hundred. If I can get 40 with the tail and dominate that partnership, that’s my job. Getting a big partnership here and getting a century definitely gives me some confidence going forward.”There was palpable relief at getting another significant score on the board 14 Tests and four years later, not just with the celebration of fist pumps to himself before receiving a warm embrace from his partner at the time, Ollie Robinson, and the appreciation of a packed out Emirates Old Trafford.Since his debut, Foakes was either thrust in and out on a whim or missed out through injury, as happened at the start of 2021 when he tore his hamstring. Then, during the Headingley Test against New Zealand earlier this summer, a bout of Covid-19 ruled him out of the second-half of the match and the next Test against India. Twin failures at Lord’s (6 and 0) heaped more misery on him, but he has come out the other side in impressive fashion. An average of 26.91 coming into this match has already improved to 31.82 thanks to the red ink.”I just felt awful in that game [Headingley],” he said. “Getting the opportunity of being number one and then pretty soon after getting something like that is very frustrating, I’ve had a bit of stuff going on since I first played but I’m used to little setbacks like that”To be honest, in my first 10 games I was kind of looking and thinking ‘jeez how hard is Test cricket’. The West Indies tour [in 2019], the wickets out there – and then I came in for those three in India [last year] and it was obviously crazy to bat on and I guess this is a different role as well.”I think it’s just that I’ve been a little bit out of touch,” he said of his performance at Lord’s last week. “I haven’t been lining it up as well as I’d like in the last couple of Championship games and then in the first one at Lord’s. So for me it was just working out how to do that better. That’s what I worked on between these two games. And I felt like I did line it up better and play better.”Because it’s not my natural game, it’s just trying to work out how to play best. And I think sometimes I haven’t got the balance right because I’m not an explosive batter. If I’m trying to get the score up I can start pushing at the ball and things like that and playing at balls I shouldn’t be. It’s been really clear, obviously practising in a different way for that role, but also being really clear when I am just going to bat or when I have to push the button… how I’m going to do it. Don’t just throw my bat outside off stump. I’m happy to get out if I’m doing this or this, but not just giving it away.”

The new 'Invincibles' add more glory to their extraordinary era

Tahlia McGrath played with Covid and India had their target in sight, but Australia still found a way to win yet another title, writes Valkerie Baynes

It might just be official, Australia are invincible.Even when they seemed cursed, the all-conquering Australian Women’s cricket team added the first Commonwealth Games gold medal for their sport to the T20I and ODI World Cups already in their collection with a pulsating nine-run win against India at Edgbaston on Sunday. In an inauspicious start for title favourites Australia, allrounder Tahlia McGrath woke with mild symptoms of Covid-19 and subsequently tested positive. After negotiations between Commonwealth Games Australia, Cricket Australia, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the ICC, McGrath was allowed to play under the Games’ policy of treating such matters on a case-by-case basis.McGrath had been one of the players of the tournament with 128 runs at an average of 42.66 and strike-rate of 148.83 putting her ninth on the run-scorers’ list, while she was the second-highest wicket-taker with eight scalps at 12.12 and an economy rate of 6.92.Related

She didn’t have the best day on the field on Sunday though, making just 2, and conceding 24 off her two wicketless overs. But one of the more bizarre sights of the day – if it could get any more unusual than seeing a player sitting all alone in an entire section of the stand wearing a face mask while waiting to bat – came when McGrath took a steepling catch to dismiss Shafali Verma, who had skied Ashleigh Gardner to midwicket.Australia were elated given that Gardner had seen Shafali dropped by Megan Schutt in the covers four balls earlier, but they couldn’t show McGrath their full appreciation as they initially ran towards her on instinct. They heeded her warning to “stay away” as she held her hands out, smiling. Jess Jonassen, whose arrival in Ireland for Australia’s warm-up matches ahead of the Games was delayed by a bout of Covid, bumped wrists and boots with McGrath, but that’s as close as anyone got until victory was sealed.Jess Jonassen has a foot-tap with Tahlia McGrath, who was cleared to play despite testing positive, after a catch to dismiss Shafali Verma•Getty Images

At that moment, McGrath stood outside the team huddle as they awaited India’s review to confirm Yastika Bhatia’s lbw dismissal and, as the others embraced and jumped up and down in celebration, she remained outside the group with her arms aloft before the circle opened and she jumped into an embrace with team-mates.Schutt described the moment: “We didn’t want to get in trouble. I think we felt bad for Tahlia at the end there,” she said.”That was probably the strangest part of it all, just not being able to celebrate with her. Obviously, when you’re part of a game that’s so thrilling like that, that’s all you want to do. At the end, you know, screw it, if we get Covid so be it.”In Australia, it probably wouldn’t be the case but the fact Tahlia got to go out there, take a crucial catch and be part of a thrilling win is very special.”The sides didn’t shake hands at the close, instead filing past each other a metre or so apart with raised hands, and McGrath wore a mask on the podium as Australia received their gold medals after a close contest in which they, almost predictably, came out on top.India were sublime in the field and claimed 36 for 5 in the last five overs to restrict the target to 162 with Renuka Singh, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, and Sneh Rana taking two each.Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning combined for a second-wicket partnership worth 74 after Alyssa Healy fell lbw to Renuka in the third over, extending a lean patch with the bat in which Healy hasn’t passed 23 in eight innings since her match-winning 170 in the ODI World Cup final in April.Mooney notched up 61 off 41 balls, her second half-century of the tournament. But this time Mooney batted largely without McGrath, with whom she had shared century and half-century partnerships in Australia’s two previous matches. After helping New Zealand beat England in the bronze-medal playoff earlier in the day with an unbeaten half-century, which also made her the leading run-scorer at the time, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine joked that one of the Australians would probably make a big score to overtake her. Sure enough, Mooney’s knock took her two runs clear of Devine to end the tournament on top with 179 runs.India’s pursuit progressed well via a half-century to Harmanpreet Kaur and 33 from Jemimah Rodrigues. But when Australia took 3 for 3 in nine balls via Schutt and Gardner, the latter removing Pooja Vastrakar and Harmanpreet with successive balls, India needed 41 off the last four overs. The wickets continued to fall as Australia kept the pressure on and Jess Jonassen, the wily left-arm spinner entrusted with bowling the final over, combined with Alana King to run out Meghna Singh and then trapped Yastika to ensure victory with three balls to spare.”That was absolutely crazy,” Schutt said. “One of the best games I’ve ever been a part of, by far. The way we scrapped at the end there – that definitely wasn’t our best game. We didn’t field the best, we didn’t bowl the best, and we scrapped with the bat, but we fight, that’s what we do.”It ebbed and flowed like we knew it would and it was absolutely thrilling. We just kept pushing and that’s the way we play cricket and for that to go our way is amazing.”Fireworks go off after the medals ceremony•Getty Images

And therein lies Australia’s secret to success. They keep fighting no matter what is thrown at them and they always seem to have someone who can step up.Mooney said it was important for the side to continue “evolving”.”The adjustments we make and the adaptability we have within the group is critical to our success, having an environment where it’s okay to fail and for things to look a little bit ugly,” she said. “Certainly a great performance tonight and one to remember for a long time.”Jonassen described the win as “absolutely huge”.”I’ve been blessed enough to be part of some winning World Cup teams but to win the first gold medal for women’s cricket in the Commonwealth Games, we’re only ever going to do that once and I’m proud to be part of that,” she said.”For that final over, my heart was absolutely through the roof. I was pretty nervous, I’m not going to lie, but I just looked down the other end and saw Alyssa Healy behind the stumps there and she was just putting her arms out and putting her shoulders up getting me to take a deep breath. Ultimately, that’s what helped me.”It was unfortunate that such a high-quality match fell under the spectre of Covid, but there is no surer sign of the times and this match may have marked the evolution of a sport as much as the evolution of a team.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

New York Red Bulls star and U.S. international John Tolkin appears to be close to finalizing a long-awaited move to Europe. The Red Bulls and German Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel have reportedly agreed to a $3 million transfer, which will include sell-on for the MLS club.

Tolkin is one of MLS's brightest young stars, shining at left back for four seasons. His strongest statistical season might have come in 2023, where he had three goals and six assists in league action. Last year, he was part of the core that helped lead New York to the MLS Cup, narrowly losing to the LA Galaxy.

Tolkin, who came through the Red Bulls academy, is also a U.S. international with four caps and is currently at Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT January camp.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A Tolkin move to Europe has been long speculated, and Holstein Kiel reportedly went in for the player last summer but were rejected due to timing. There was a sense of finality after the Red Bulls' playoff run this past season. There were multiple reports of a move and even team star Emil Forsberg appeared resigned to losing the talented fullback.

"Yeah, if he were to leave, we will see then, but he's been fantastic for us a long time," Forserg told GOAL at MLS Media Day. "So if he goes, he deserves the chance to go. If he stays, we're more than happy to have him, because he's a fantastic soccer player."

If the move to the Bundesliga goes through, it will likely help his chances of becoming a regular call-up for the USMNT. Fulham's star left back Antonee Robinson is locked in the starter role, but he has no clear understudy. Tolkin showed strong potential during his time with the U.S. Olympic Team last summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Tolkin made his first MLS appearance in 2021, coming on as a substitute in the Red Bulls 2-0 win against Toronto FC on May 8.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR TOLKIN?

Tolkin and his representatives are continuing to iron out the deal. If it goes through, he will join a side that is battling relegation as Holstein sit 17th out of 18 teams in the Bundesliga. Still, he will be encouraged by the team's stunning upset over fellow American Gio Reyna's Dortmund on Tuesday.
