Who are the bidders? Which cities are in the fray? What is the auction purse? Here are all the answers

Perry: ‘Everyone in world cricket is excited for the WIPL’

The build-up towards the inaugural Women’s IPL (WIPL) has reached fever pitch. After completing an astounding media rights deal that will fetch it approximately USD 116.7 million over a five-year period, the BCCI is set to unveil the five franchise owners – along with the cities they have bid for – on January 25. Here’s a ready reckoner from ESPNcricinfo with the lowdown on the auction process, the list of bidders, and the auction purse.
Who are the prospective bidders in the fray?
As many as 33 interested parties – including all ten men’s IPL franchises – had initially expressed interest by securing the tender document. But on Monday, only 17 entities submitted technical bids, including seven men’s IPL franchises: Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The other bidders include Adani Group, Capri. Global, Haldiram’s Group, Torrent Pharma, Apollo Pipes, Amrit Leela Enterprises, Shriram Group and Slingshot 369 Ventures Private Limited.Related

Is there a set base price? And what is the auction process?
No base price has been set by the BCCI. Bidders will submit their bids in a sealed envelope. Bids will be accepted for a ten-year period, but the winners will own the team for perpetuity just like the owners of the men’s IPL franchises do. Bidders will vie for one of the ten cities the BCCI has shortlisted as home bases. The cities are (stadium capacity in brackets): Ahmedabad (112,560), Kolkata (65,000), Chennai (50,000), Bengaluru (42,000), Delhi (55,000), Dharamsala (20,900), Guwahati (38,650), Indore (26,900), Lucknow (48,800) and Mumbai, which has three grounds – the Wankhede, DY Patil and Brabourne Stadiums. Can a bid be made for more than one city?
Bidders have been given the option of contesting more than one franchise or city, but the BCCI will award them only the city they have bid a higher amount for. In case two of the highest bids for a single venue are equal, a re-bid will take place. And if the highest bids for two venues from two different bidders are the same, the BCCI will have the “discretion to decide the order”. In case a bidder raises the top bid for more than one city, the bidder can choose its preferred venue. The auction for Women’s IPL is expected to be held in the first week of February•BCCIWill the highest bid be the winning bid?
In the bid document, BCCI has said that it is not “obliged to accept highest monetary offer”, and has listed some objectives it will look into before finalising the winner. These include: “establishing a stable, successful, financially secure, long-term Franchise to participate in the League; ensuring the widest coverage and the widest possible audience for the League; assisting in the development of the game of women’s cricket in India at all levels; maximizing and enhancing exposure, wherever possible, for each of the official sponsors of the League; and, increasing and enhancing exposure for women’s cricket in India both within India and the rest of the world.”When is the player auction?
No firm date has been announced by the BCCI, but the auction is expected to be held in the first week of February. The BCCI has already concluded the player-registration process as a first step towards conducting the auction.Sunrisers Hyderabad are one of seven men’s IPL franchises to submit a bid for Women’s IPL•BCCIWhat is the auction purse?
INR 12 crore (USD 1.46 million approx.) will be the auction purse for the inaugural season. Each team can buy a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players, including seven overseas players including at least one Associate player. Unlike in the men’s IPL, WIPL teams will have the option of fielding up to five overseas players in the XI, provided one is from an Associate country. What about the tournament dates?
Although not officially announced, ESPNcricinfo understands that a window between March 3 and 26 has been carved out. What will the tournament’s format be?
A total of 22 matches will be played in the inaugural season, with each team playing the other twice to make it a total of eight games per team. The top-ranked team will enter the final directly, while the second- and third-placed teams will face off in a Qualifier to determine the second finalist.

Not Djiga: Rangers must axe star who "looks like he's hasn't kicked a ball"

As has become customary in Glasgow on a Champions League night, the world-famous anthem is greeted with defending cheers.

However, within a matter of minutes, all those in Govan and Glasgow’s surrounding areas could hear was a cacophony of boos.

The night could hardly have started any worse for Russell Martin’s side, conceding after three minutes and then again from a corner four minutes later, before Club Brugge added a third on the 20 minute mark, this the fastest Rangers have ever found themselves 3-0 down in a home European tie in their 69 years of continental history.

At that stage, the Belgian side appeared set to completely put the tie to bed, although it didn’t entirely turn out that way.

Straight after the break, teenaged debutant Jayden Meghoma’s low cross was tapped home by Danilo before, with 12 minutes to play, Djeidi Gassama thought he’d reduced the arrears further, but his goal was disallowed because referee François Letexier deemed that goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had two hands on the ball; a controversial VAR decision.

Thus, 1-3 it finished at Ibrox, leaving Rangers with a mountain to climb at Jan Breydelstadion next Wednesday, and a couple of Martin’s summer recruits in particular did not impress.

Nasser Djiga's calamitous night

Since joining on loan from Wolves this summer, Nasser Djiga has now started all eight matches this season, forming a centre-back partnership with John Souttar.

The Burkina Faso international arrived in Glasgow with plenty of Champions League experience, starting all ten of Crvena zvezda’s qualifiers and league phase fixtures last season, although you wouldn’t have known it three minutes in to this one.

Brugge’s opener, scored by Romeo Vermant, came about in bizarre circumstances.

Danilo had a shot blocked at one end, before Christos Tzolis’ hopeful ball forward was inexplicably just left by Djiga, running in the complete opposite direction, allowing Vermant to delicately lob the ball over a bemused and confused Jack Butland.

Graeme McGarry of the Herald labelled this the “worst defending I’ve ever seen” while, speaking on Sky Sports News, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd described this as “calamitous”, adding “Rangers just come up with new ways to concede goals…. Champions League football… forget it”.

This is such a concern because, as already alluded to, Martin appeared to have his centre-back partnership in Djiga and Souttar set in stone, albeit, after the former was sent off against Dundee ten days ago, this was not his first costly error.

Nevertheless, he is not one of Martin’s summer recruits coming under the most scrutiny following this damaging defeat.

Rangers' new signing could be dropped

James Tavernier has been a stalwart since joining Rangers a decade ago, making 521 appearances for the club, only ten men can boast more, among the first names on the team sheet throughout this period – until now that is.

The club captain was left on the bench for the first leg against Viktoria Plzeň in the previous round, with the same true again on Tuesday, with Max Aarons starting at right-back instead, very much a permanent fixture in Martin’s team, but could that be about to change?

Well, the 25-year-old did not impress against Brugge, as the table below documents.

As the table highlights, only four players, namely the aforementioned Souttar and Djiga, as well as Brugge duo Brandon Mechele and Jorne Spileers, accumulated more touches than Aarons, despite the fact he was hooked with 20 minutes remaining, but he did little good with all this time spent in possession.

The full-back was dribbled past once, this when Tzolis came close to adding a fourth in first-half stoppage time, losing possession on seven occasions, while also winning just four of his 11 ground duels, which pretty much sums up his and Rangers’ night.

Journalist Scott Bradley asserted that Aarons “looks like he hasn’t kicked a ball before”, adding that he remains “absolutely baffled” as to why the “best right-back in the league”, namely Tavernier, is once again left watching from the dugout by under-fire Martin.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

All in all, a disastrous night for Rangers, leaving their Champions League dreams hanging by a thread, requiring a miracle when they visit West Flanders next mid-week.

Before then, already four points adrift of Premiership leaders Hearts and Celtic after just two fixtures, Martin can ill-afford yet more dropped points at St Mirren on Sunday, so it would be no surprise if captain Tavernier is restored to the team in Paisley.

Blow for Emery: Aston Villa sale could collapse amid mounting FFP pressure

Aston Villa have been dealt a blow as it has emerged that a potential sale is in danger of collapsing, piling more pressure on the Midlands club as they look to meet financial fair play guidlines.

Villa one of five clubs facing race against time

Aston Villa are one of several clubs in danger of falling the wrong side of the Premier League's Financial Fair play guidelines this summer. After posting losses of £120m last year, Unai Emery's side need to sell players to balance their books.

They are not alone, with reports claiming that Everton, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Newcastle United are all under the same pressure, and all facing a race against time to turn a profit.

Aston Villa hold talks for dream £25m Gallagher partner

After sorting out PSR concerns Emery can shape his squad with talented new members.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 13, 2024

Villa are already well on their way, with an interesting swap deal set to send Douglas Luiz to Juventus. In exchange, the Midlands outfit will receive Juve outcasts Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior, as well as £17m, which will boost their profits.

There is also interest from Chelsea in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, who is valued at around £50m, which could raise further funds should a deal go through.

From Emery's side, there is thought to be interest in Conor Gallagher, also valued at £50m, though the Blues are considering offering their skipper a contract extension at Stamford Bridge. And, in another blow to the Villans, a potential departure could be set to collapse just weeks before the financial fair play deadline.

Defender deal in danger of collapse

Now, it has emerged that Villa's sale of Matty Cash is in danger of falling through. The Poland international was a key figure in the opening months of the season, but fell down the pecking order over the course of the campaign and was displaced from right-back by Ezri Konsa.

He was not even in the squad for the final two games of their record breaking season, though he started both legs of the UEFA Conference League semi-final defeat to Olympiacos.

As per journalist Dean Jones, Emery is "happy for him to leave the club” this summer, and AC Milan are one of the sides keen on adding the 26-year-old to their ranks ahead of the new season.

However, Villa won't let him leave cheaply, and have slapped a £30m price tag on his head as they look to maximise his value, with Cash still having three years left to run on his £80,000 per week deal at Villa Park.

That appears to have scared off the Rossoneri, who deem that valuation 'excessive', and have 'gone completely cold' on the transfer as a result, with the club only likely to return to the negotiating table if Villa lower their price tag.

At 35m euros, Cash would be the joint-ninth most expensive signing in the club's history, alongside fellow Pole Krystof Piatek, and that is clearly too much for the Milan outfit to countenance. For now, Villa look set to lose out on some much needed funds.

Simone Inzaghi blasts 'most unjust accusations' over Al-Hilal move after Saudi side's CEO reveals he agreed Inter exit before Champions League final

Al-Hilal revealed Inzaghi agreed move before UCL finalEx-Inter boss says criticism doesn’t reflect support he receivedNow preparing for CWC opener against Real MadridFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking ahead of Al-Hilal’s Club World Cup opener against Real Madrid, Inzaghi addressed the recent revelation that he had already agreed to join the Saudi Arabian side before Inter’s Champions League final defeat. Al-Hilal’s CEO publicly stated that terms were settled in advance, which has led to heavy backlash from Inter fans questioning Inzaghi’s commitment.

Inzaghi, however, brushed off the criticism, saying he will always cherish the support and love he received from Inter fans and the club despite the "unjust accusation."

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Inzaghi’s time at Inter was a rollercoaster. He delivered domestic success, including a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles, and three Supercoppa Italiana, but fell short on the European stage. The embarrassing 5-0 defeat in the Champions League final left a sour ending to what many thought could have been a long-term project.

There were even reports of a contract extension days after the European loss, but the Italian agreed to join Al-Hilal. The offer from Riyadh came with a two-year deal worth a reported €26 million per season, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in world football.

WHAT SIMONE INZAGHI SAID

Inzaghi made it clear that the recent criticism hasn't overshadowed the support he received during his time at Inter, saying: "I've listened to [all the criticism], as often happened in the four years at Inter, but if this is the price to pay for my years in Milan, then I'll pay it willingly. The criticisms I'm hearing are nothing compared to the good I've received from the Inter world, and I'm talking about fans, managers and players – he continued -. I know I'll miss everything about Inter, even the most unjust accusations. I had a really good time and I gave my all. Speaking about it with the club, and for the good of Inter, I think the separation was the right thing for everyone, even with a lot of pain."

Inzaghi is set for his first major test with the Saudi giants as they face Real Madrid in their Club World Cup opener on Wednesday. Talks ongoing as Chelsea ready £65 million bid to sign Real Madrid target

Chelsea are said to be preparing a £65 million total package bid to sign a forward wanted by Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Boehly set to back Chelsea this summer despite PSR concerns

The west Londoners are in real danger of potential Premier League sanctions, as widespread reports suggest Mauricio Pochettino's side may need to raise around £100 million through player sales by the financial deadline on June 30.

ByEmilio Galantini May 11, 2024

Profit and Sustainability rules dictate that English clubs are allowed to make a £105 million total loss over a rolling three-year period, and Chelsea are currently far exceeding this limit after two years of lavish spending under BlueCo and Todd Boehly.

The likes of Conor Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah and Raheem Sterling could be sold by Chelsea, among many other bit-part players and loanees, to help balance the books and avoid punishments akin to those of Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City.

Reports have also claimed that Chelsea are plotting potential part-exchange bids this summer, to both sign key targets and rid themselves of unwanted players. It will be a crucial next month and a half, as Fabrizio Romano highlights the club's PSR worries could also have a key impact on their pursuit of long-term striker target Victor Osimhen.

“I think Chelsea will be there,” the transfer expert said.

“The interest is still there. It is really important to understand what is happening; first of all with the FFP situation because Chelsea do not want to overpay, so it is important to know how much the package is going to be for Victor Osimhen.

“It will then be important to see how much Osimhen wants in terms of salary and his contract. So there are some crucial financial points to sort out before Chelsea can say ‘ok’ and go for Osimhen.”

There is also the widely reported chase for Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian to consider. Romano shared news last week that Estevao has verbally agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but until contracts are officially signed, there is still a very real danger that other clubs could enter the running for the attacker.

Chelsea preparing £65 million total package bid for Estevao

Goal Brasil have an update on Chelsea and their talks for the teenager this week, with the west Londoners and a host of Europe's top sides pursuing Estevao, such is his promise.

The South American news outlet, via Sport Witness, write that Chelsea are formulating a £65 million total package bid, including taxes, for Estevao – and talks are ongoing with Palmeiras to try and reach an agreement.

Pochettino's side are very keen to get it over the line and quickly, with Real Madrid among those thought to be lingering in the background. As well as the Galacticos, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain and Juventus.

DRS: Should Haider Ali have been given out?

What happens when technology and the naked eye contradict each other, as was the case in the second ODI?

Danyal Rasool01-Nov-2020Haider Ali’s debut ODI innings was going well until it was cut short by what, according to replays, would appear to be a TV umpiring error. The dismissal was a point of interest in an otherwise routine game with little drama. Pakistan got on top early in the second ODI against Zimbabwe, never relinquishing control, and running down a small target on a good batting surface with consummate ease. But the decision that ended Haider’s innings on 29 – and the process that led to it – raised several questions. In the 22nd over, with Pakistan sitting pretty on 137 for 2, requiring 70 more for a series-sealing triumph, Haider tried to lap Sean Williams to fine leg. He missed, and the ball hit his pads. On-field umpire Aleem Dar had little hesitation in raising the finger. The batsman immediately reviewed and front-on slow-motion replays appeared to show the path of the ball deviating after it went past Haider’s bat, onto the pads – apparently off Haider’s gloves. Third umpire Ahsan Raza requested UltraEdge, though the technology showed no obvious spike at the moment slow-motion replays appeared to show a deflection. After lengthy and repeated side-by-side replays, Raza finally decided to go with UltraEdge, ruling that Haider must not have hit it. HawkEye went on to show the ball hitting the stumps, which meant the on-field decision of lbw had to stand. Haider was sent on his way, shaking his head.Though the technology is not thought to have failed, DRS playing condition 3.3.7 states that if it does “for whatever reason, the third umpire shall advise the on-field umpire of this fact but still provide any relevant factual information that may be ascertained from the available television replays and other technology”. The preceding conditions say that “if despite the available technology, the third umpire is unable to decide with a high degree of confidence whether the original on-field decision should be changed, then he/she shall report that the replays are ‘inconclusive’, and that the on-field decision shall stand”.That wasn’t the only awkward moment for the third umpire in what turned out to be a tricky afternoon. When Mohammad Rizwan was beaten and bowled by a Sikandar Raza delivery, the on-field umpires referred the matter to the TV umpire, just to confirm that Zimbabwe’s wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor hadn’t knocked the bails off with his gloves. He hadn’t – conclusively – and while Raza appeared to make his mind up quickly, it was the “not out” sign that flashed on the big screen, much to everyone’s bemusement. After a short delay, the right call was made, and Rizwan was on his way.

Sam Curran bags three, but Grant Stewart and Harry Podmore stand firm for Kent

Curran’s release from England Test bubble tempered by visiting duo at The Oval

ECB Reporters Network22-Aug-2020Grant Stewart made 58 and Harry Podmore scored a fine 42-ball 47 from No. 8 as the pair added 73 for the seventh wicket and Kent reached a determined 295 for 8 after being put in by Surrey on the opening day of their Bob Willis Trophy fixture at the Kia Oval.Sam Curran returned from England Test duty to take 3 for 65 for Surrey but it was the lower-order partnership between Podmore and Stewart that ultimately edged the day Kent’s way after a battling performance. There were also half-century stands for the second and fifth wickets, respectively by Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning and then by Marcus O’Riordan and Darren Stevens, to frustrate Surrey’s attack. At 99 for 4 in mid-afternoon, however, it looked like it would be Surrey’s day after Bell-Drummond fell for a fighting 111-ball 45 – leg-before to Adam Finch – and Ollie Robinson was also pinned in front for 17 by Curran. But O’Riordan, a contemporary of England’s new batting star Zak Crawley when they were both at Tonbridge School, reached 30 from 65 balls while veteran allrounder Stevens made 24, before edging Rikki Clarke to Ben Foakes behind the stumps, as the pair led a counter-attack with a stand of 55 in 13 overs. And then, after O’Riordan had thin-edged Curran to Foakes in the second over after tea, pushing at one angled across him from the left-arm seamer, Podmore arrived to play an excellent knock that included six fours and a big six sweetly struck into the new Peter May Stand construction site off Amar Virdi.Stewart also drove offspinner Virdi for a straight six and hit five fours in his 103-ball innings, before being eighth out in the day’s 87th over when he went down the pitch to Virdi, missed an attempted lofted drive and was bowled leg stump. The 22-year-old O’Riordan, just nine days older than Crawley, impressed in what is just his fifth first-class game. He has been getting his Kent chance in this abbreviated summer largely because of the absences of Crawley and other senior players, and despite his offspin being reportedly his strongest cricketing suit he has looked very comfortable taking various top-order batting roles in the past month. In his fourth Willis Trophy appearance, O’Riordan came in at 99 for 3 and resisted gamely, hitting five fours before departing at 170 for 6. The efforts of Podmore, Stewart and Matt Milnes, who finished on 22 not out after a handy 49-run stand with Stewart, then ensured that Kent were marginally the happier at stumps.Earlier Kent had fought hard to get to 56 for 1 by lunch, with Bell-Drummond joined by Leaning in a partnership of 58 in 25 overs after Jordan Cox had gone in the ninth over, leg-before to a Matt Dunn yorker.Leaning eventually went for 21, chipping Curran to mid on off a leading edge in the sixth over after lunch, and just before his dismissal by Finch, acting captain Bell-Drummond was hit on the shoulder by the impressive 20-year-old paceman, making his second Surrey appearance on loan from Worcestershire.Finch, though, then had to wait until deep into the final session to get his second scalp, that of Podmore who carved to backward point.Wicketkeeper Foakes, like Curran, was playing his first BWT game after being released from England’s bio-secure Test bubble but Surrey were without fast bowler Morne Morkel, who picked up a niggle in the defeat against Hampshire at Arundel last week.Kent, without Joe Denly and Sam Billings – who have joined England’s white-ball squad – and Heino Kuhn, who is on paternity leave, have given a first-class debut to 20-year-old paceman Nathan Gilchrist, signed from Somerset earlier this summer, and who finished on 1 not out.

And Parkinson has once again set his sights on competing at the top end of the table as they aim for a third successive ascension, this time into the Championship.

  • WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson told reporters:  “We have to show we’re serious contenders at this level and we’ve done it in really good style. We knew what we had to do today against a very good Peterborough side, the shape of the team out of possession was outstanding.

“The first goal typified our quality and all in all it was good win for the team and the subs who came on. It was the shape of the team and the structure was really good, Peterborough found it difficult to play through us.

“We were reasonably comfortable and the lads are on a high because of that. This was another test for us today.”

Ederson has been hotly-linked with a move to Al-Ittihad throughout the summer and is believed to be interested in a move to Saudi Arabia. It has been reported that Ederson was disappointed with the praise his deputy Stefan Ortega received following the Brazilian's injury that kept him out of the final stages of the season. Despite this, Guardiola has not given up hope of keeping Ederson at the club.

Hoping to persuade the keeper to stay, Guardiola said: "I wish with the bottom of my heart Eddie will continue with us… I would love him to stay. I cannot imagine our processes succeeding these last seasons without him. He is an important figure in the locker room."
