Oi, sumido!

Harmanpreet Kaur ruled out of first T20I against South Africa; Smriti Mandhana named captain

Smriti Mandhana backs India spinners to bounce back

India Women’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the T20I series opener against South Africa on Saturday in Lucknow owing to an injury. In her absence, Smriti Mandhana will lead the side in what will be their first appearance in the format since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 last year.Kaur had suffered a hip-flexor injury in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, having settled in to put together a half-century stand with Mithali Raj before retiring out in the 31st over just as India looked to launch. She didn’t take the field for the rest of the game.”She [Kaur] has been ruled out of tomorrow’s match and rest of the updates on her injury will be given by the medical team and the team management,” Mandhana said on the eve of the first T20I. “It will be better for them to speak about it rather than me.”Mandhana, 24, has led India in four T20Is, her maiden bow as captain having come in March 2019, where she filled in for an injured Kaur in the three-match T20I series against a visiting England side in Guwahati. India suffered a whitewash in that assignment, but in her next stint as captain, in November that year, she led the T20I side to a 61-run win against hosts West Indies.Mandhana also confirmed that India would be going in with the same opening combination they had in the T20 World Cup, with 17-year-old Shafali Verma, who couldn’t find a place in the ODI squad though she had topped the run-chart for India in the world tournament, partnering Mandhana.

“India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling [in the ODI series].”

“As of now we both, together, have had good partnerships since last two years, so we are looking at the same combination,” Mandhana said.India’s 4-1 loss in the ODI series, which head coach WV Raman coach attributed in most part to a lack of “game time”, threw into sharp relief South Africa’s meticulous planning to flatten the hosts’ vaunted spin attack. The Indian spinners averaged 53.15 in the five matches combined, their worst in a women’s ODI series/tournament where they bowled 100 or more overs. Their bowling strike rate of 70.7 was also their worst in a series/tournament in the 50-over format.”[The] spinners have been our biggest strength for the longest time,” Mandhana said. “India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling. They were very good in patches and there’s was the one odd ball which didn’t go our way, or didn’t go their way, so that’s the talk of being more consistent in pitching the ball in good areas because if you keep pitching the six balls in the same areas, it gets tough as a batter. In T20Is, with just four overs – 24 balls – I think it will be easier for the spinners to focus on the 24 balls rather than the 60 balls. I look at it that way.”Mandhana also said that the BCCI is in talks with its English counterpart about the participation of the Indian players in the Hundred, which begins on July 21, but stressed that a final decision would be contingent upon the schedule of the national team. ESPNcricinfo reported last month that four India players are on the radar of the Hundred teams and their involvement in the tournament could come about after India’s tour of England, likely starting June, which is set to include a one-off Test.”The ECB is in talks with the BCCI but we don’t have an update yet about it,” Mandhana said. “Let’s see, it will be highly depending on the schedule what the Indian team will be having because our first priority will definitely be the India matches, so I am sure the BCCI and ECB are working towards it and let’s hope to hear something around [the] 100-ball [tournament] from them soon.”India Women T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Sushma Verma (wicketkeeper), Nuzhat Parveen (wicketkeeper), Ayushi Soni, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Mansi Joshi, Monica Patel, C. Man Utd now keen on £20m+ Gomes alternative who just assisted at Old Trafford

Manchester United have now joined the race to sign a “phenomenal” midfielder, who recently put in an impressive performance at Old Trafford.

Man Utd stepping up pursuit of new midfielder

Man United have set out to sign a new central midfielder in the January transfer window, and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes is the object of their desires, with it recently being revealed the 24-year-old has said ‘yes’ to a move to Old Trafford.

INEOS are now working on a deal for the Wolves star, with David Ornstein revealing the Old Gold may choose to cash-in during the January transfer window, as his value may decrease if they are a Championship club by the time summer comes around.

The need to bring in a new central midfielder may also be exacerbated if Kobbie Mainoo moves on, with it now emerging that talks over the 20-year-old signing a contract extension have been put on hold, amid interest from reigning Serie A champions Napoli.

However, it would be understandable if Wolves were unwilling to sell Gomes, given that he has been one of their key players this season and remains contracted until 2030, and the Red Devils have now joined the race for a potential alternative.

That is according to a report from talkSPORT, which names Man United as potential suitors for Everton midfielder James Garner, who is also being targeted by Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

The Toffees have little interest in sanctioning a departure, however, and have recently stepped up talks over a new contract, with Garner’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

David Moyes is personally keen to keep hold of the central midfielder, and it is no surprise, given that he recently played an instrumental role in his side’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Garner impresses in shock Everton win at Old Trafford

After Idrissa Gueye was shown a red card for an altercation with teammate Michael Keane on Monday night, United would’ve been expecting to take all three points, but they were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal of the game just before the half-an-hour mark, with Garner grabbing the assist, while also making three interceptions and one clearance to keep Ruben Amorim’s side at bay.

Hailed as “phenomenal” by pundit Trevor Sinclair, a deal for the Englishman wouldn’t break the bank at £20m+, and he has outperformed Gomes across some key defensive statistics over the past year.

That said, both Garner and Gomes aren’t experienced at the highest level, and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni would perhaps be a more exciting addition to the squad, with the Spanish side’s asking price recently being revealed.

Yamal has burst onto the scene over the last year, starring for both Barcelona and Spain. Despite being just 17, he is already a key player for club and country but national team manager De La Fuente has stressed the teenager must not get ahead of himself.

AdvertisementGetty WHAT LUIS DE LA FUENTE SAID

He told Mundo Deportivo: "It is a common characteristic [maturity] of this type of player. When you see that he has that touch, I say that he is touched by that magic wand of God, that he is different. These are players who, at 17 years old, have nothing to do with a boy of his age. They are much more mature, with a very important degree of responsibility, who interpret and accept any proposal and situation that you propose to them because they are brilliant. But I have also seen these footballers who have fallen by the wayside. Don’t make the mistake of wanting to walk faster than you have to, you can spoil it. You have to control that they play football very well and the thousand other details that are truly important.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Yamal played a huge role in Spain winning Euro 2024 this summer but the winger is likely to get even better, especially under the right guidance. Now, the test is to see if the Barca academy product can take his game to the next level and cement himself at the top of the sport.

Yamal is likely to feature for Spain in Saturday's Nations League clash at home to Denmark, before hosting Serbia three days later in the same competition. The Spaniard will then return to Barcelona next week.

Personal terms agreed: Chelsea close in on £40m Olise partner

da lvbet: Chelsea have flattered to deceive over the past few years but with Enzo Maresca now installed to the dugout, there is a growing belief that Stamford Bridge can enjoy a resurgence.

da stake casino: In fairness, Mauricio Pochettino engineered an impressive second-half-of-season advancement that salvaged Europa Conference League football, but the Argentine's departure was mutually agreed at the end of the term, with Maresca's purposeful ball-centric brand of football viewed as the ideal fit for the project.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

Bolstering effectively this summer will be paramount to gaining an edge over rivals, and while Tosin Adarabioyo has already been welcomed to the defence, Chelsea are set on strengthening up front, with a deal believed to be nearing completion.

Chelsea agree exciting deal

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are now in advanced discussions with Aston Villa for the transfer of forward Jhon Duran, with the move possibly completed in the next week after having reached an 'agreement in principle' regarding personal terms.

Fabrizio Romano has since corroborated the claim, and while the 20-year-old is desperate to complete the switch, the Blues are yet to make their final decision.

Duran has enjoyed an impressive breakout campaign at Villa Park, and though a £40m deal has been agreed, it is stressed there are still several obstacles to overcome.

Why Maresca wants Jhon Duran

The tumult and upheaval that have buffeted Stamford Bridge in recent years were never going to be conducive to a successful period on the pitch, but this forgettable epoch is now expected to have been placed in the past, with Maresca crafting a young and aspiring team capable of rising to a position of power among the heaviest hitters in the Premier League.

Duran is not the finished article by any stretch but he proved himself to be a formidable force at a young and unrefined stage of his career, scoring eight goals in all competitions last season, including five in the Premier League despite starting only three matches.

Given that Duran only averaged 22 minutes of match action per top-flight fixture, not even taking a shot per game (0.9), it's evident that he's got the mark of a natural-born goalscorer, though, in truth, his skill set offers so much more.

As per FBref, the Colombia international ranks among the top 14% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for aerial duels won and tackles, the top 7% for blocks and the top 1% for clearances per 90. He is not, indeed, merely a goalscorer.

Duran has actually been described as a "nightmare for defenders" by his Villa captain John McGinn and he would bring a cauldron of chaos to west London's finest frontline.

But that frontline is going to be chopped and changed over the next few months. Duran is at the top of the shopping list at centre-forward, but he's certainly not the only Premier League star coveted by Todd Boehly and Co.

How Chelsea's attack could look in 24/25

Chelsea are pushing to land a new striker but so too are they eyeing up one of English football's most destructive wide forwards. As per Romano, Chelsea are pushing to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old, born in England but aspiring for the French national team, endured an injury-hit season but still managed to score ten goals and supply a further six assists from just 19 Premier League matches – including only 14 starts.

He won 5.7 duels and averaged 2.1 dribbles per game to boot and clearly possesses one of the most combative, creative and, in summary, complete styles of any talent forward in Europe, and Chelsea would only rise to another level with him in the team.

Let's just, for one moment, imagine Olise on the right. Shuttling forward with panache and purpose and whipping in those balls that leave commentators with a kind of giddied wonder. Or, alternatively, he could cut inside, stepping across like a cheetah changing pace, before finding space and rifling a shot into the corner.

Ah, but how could we forget Cole Palmer? Chelsea's star man enjoyed quite the campaign after freeing himself from the shackles of bloated sparkle at Manchester City and cementing himself as London's finest during an almighty emergence season, scoring 25 goals and adding 15 assists from 45 matches for Chelsea.

The England international has all the tools in his locker. Olise and Palmer would form a deadly and dynamic partnership that could be perfect for Duran's chances of success, the young striker using his pace and power to skim through the lines and latch onto the creative wizardry of his peers.

It is, no doubt, a tentatively exciting time to be a Chelsea fan. The seeds of success have been placed within firm soil, and while there is much to do to ensure Maresca's arrival is not a false dawn, with such players dotted across the frontline it is hard to imagine that the Blues will not rise above the malaise of recent times.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

And all that's without even considering Nicolas Jackson, who has faced his detractors since signing for Chelsea from Villarreal for a fee in excess of £30m last season but scored 17 goals in total and has the all-round game to forge a prosperous career under Maresca.

But Duran would offer assistance, both as a foil and a rival to push and promote growth for both. Chelsea need to get it right this summer to ensure that the canyon dividing them from the top three is narrowed. Duran has demonstrated his talent at Villa Park and now he could take the next step in his promising career by moving to the capital.

Joe Root: England were 'outplayed in all three departments' by New Zealand

But England skipper says now is not the time to “rip up all the hard work we’ve done”

George Dobell13-Jun-2021Joe Root has admitted England were “outplayed in all three departments” after slipping to defeat in the LV=Insurance Test series against New Zealand. The series defeat was England’s first at home since 2014 and Root’s first at home as captain. It was also New Zealand’s first Test series victory in England since 1999.But while Root accepted it had been a “disappointing performance” from his side, he insisted it would “be the wrong time to start panicking and trying to rip up all the hard work we’ve done for such a long period of time.””It’s been a frustrating and disappointing performance this week,” Root said. “I don’t think we’ve given a fair account of ourselves. We’ve been outplayed in all three departments, particularly the batting.”We didn’t get the runs [we should have done] in the first innings. We missed chances in the field and didn’t help our bowlers in that respect. And with the bat [in the second innings] we were poor.”Sometimes in Test cricket you can have a poor session with the ball and you’re still very much in the game. But a session that like can cost you a Test. That’s where we find ourselves. It’s cost us the series and we have some hard lessons to learn.”We have to look at where we can get better individually and collectively. We need to be honest about that. We have to have some hard conversations and move forward.”Related

England’s batting was clearly their biggest issue. James Bracey (with eight runs in three innings), Zak Crawley (with 21 runs in four innings), Ollie Pope (with a top score of 23) and Root himself (who did not pass 42) all struggled despite generally benign batting conditions. But while Root accepted improvements were necessary, he defended the techniques of his players and suggested England must not abandon the investment they had put into these players ahead of major series against India and Australia. And he took responsibility for failing to lead from the front in a young batting line-up.”We have to front up, look to get better and learn some hard lessons sometimes,” he said. “We’ve all underperformed this week.”But we have to be constructive. I think every single one of those guys has proven they can score big Test runs. I think it would be the wrong time to start panicking and trying to rip up all the hard work we’ve done for such a long period of time. It’s something that historically we’ve done going into big tournaments and big Test series and it’s made things even worse.”There’s a huge desire to keep getting better as a team. We know there’s talent and ability in the group. Sometimes you really learn about a group of players, going through a difficult period like this. We have had a poor week, a poor series, and have got to front up to that. But it doesn’t make them bad players.”There’s been a lot of talk about technique and batting. My view is batting is very much an individual thing. There’s no right or wrong way of doing it. Look at the best players in the world: they all have different methods of how they play. How they stand, their bat paths, where they score their runs.”For me it’s more of a metal thing. It’s about clarity in their own game and managing passages of play. Managing different bowlers, different angles and conditions and doing that consistently well over an innings and a series. We can be a little bit smarter on occasions. It’s somewhere that throughout my career I’ve got that horribly wrong on occasions.”As the leading run-scorer within our squad currently I feel like I’ve put a lot of pressure on those guys by not performing myself. As a captain you pride yourself on getting big runs and leading from the front and I’ve not managed to follow through on that. So I’ve probably compounded that situation slightly.”Despite his disappointment, Root refused to blame any sense that his side had been discombobulated by the furore around historic social media posts in the run-up to the game or the absence of those players who had appeared in the IPL”That [the social media issue] would be a bit of an excuse, to be honest,” Root said. “I actually think that once the game came round and the training days came round, we managed to focus solely on the cricket. I don’t think that’s dripped into the way we played.”As we have spoken about so many times, we find ourselves in these Covid times and things aren’t perfect. They are not ideal. Yes, the whole thing is frustrating from time to time. You want your best players available for every Test. At the minute that’s not quite a possibility. That’s part and parcel of the world we live in right now. The sooner it can get back to normal the better for a number of reasons.”We’ve five more Tests to come this summer and I’d like to think for those Tests we’d have our first XI if all fit. And that’s a really exciting prospect as a team and something to look forward to.”

Lungi Ngidi dukes it with the Dukes ball as South Africa claim upper hand

Fast bowler hopes for more opportunities with seamer-friendly ball after five-wicket haul

Firdose Moonda10-Jun-2021Lungi Ngidi hopes to have more opportunity to bowl with the Dukes ball after it helped him earn his second Test five-for in St Lucia. Ngidi, who took 6 for 39 against India on debut in January 2018, rated the Dukes ball as more seamer-friendly than the Kookaburra, used in South Africa, or India’s SG, because of the way it behaves.”I prefer the Dukes ball. It stays harder and moves around a lot more,” Ngidi said after the first day’s play. “The Kookaburra ball tends to get a bit soft and once it gets soft, it doesn’t really swing and you try to look for reverse swing. The SG gets scuffed up really quick and it’s a really hard ball to maintain. But the Dukes ball is really a test of skill. Once you can get the wrist position right and hone in on your area, you can be very successful with this ball. Having bowled with it now, I hope I bowl with it for many, many years.”Ngidi had never used the Dukes ball in a Test match before, having not played any Tests in England or in the Caribbean before this tour. He did have access to it when practising in South Africa and said the training group was “trying everything to control that ball,” and showed off the results of their persistence inside two sessions on the first day.South Africa dismissed West Indies for 97, for their second sub-100 total since 2004, through a combination of aggression and discipline that Ngidi explained could be difficult to get right in favourable conditions. “You can get carried away, especially when it’s nipping around and swinging like that,” he said.In the morning session, South Africa were anything but over-excited by conditions. While Kagiso Rabada and Ngidi kept the brakes on West Indies, Anrich Nortje tore through the top order. “My role definition has been very clear – it’s been to make sure I keep one end quiet. We do have some really quick bowlers and a lot of batsmen were struggling with them so for me to give them nothing was part of the plan,” Ngidi said.Related

His morning’s work was seven overs for 10 runs and he returned after lunch to take five wickets for nine runs, having changed ends in between whiles. “I felt more comfortable from the other end and my rhythm clicked,” he said. “It’s been a work in progress. I had to work very hard in the gym, on fitness, and the most important thing was the skill side of things and being able to swing the ball away from batters.”Ngidi celebrated his second five-for with an emotional gesture to the heavens and then settled in to watch West Indies’ enjoy some, albeit not the same, success. Teenage debutant Jayden Seales, playing in just his second first-class match, took 3 for 34 and Ngidi was particularly impressed with his performance. “I was keeping a close eye on him. His seam presentation is what I tried to do when we were bowling,” Ngidi said. “He has got a great wrist behind the ball, a very clean action and it seems like he can run in all day, so he is a danger. It’s a very exciting future for the West Indies with him in the line-up.”South Africa will hope it’s not too exciting, just yet. Their lead of 31 is still some way behind what Ngidi thinks could be match-winning, especially on a surface that will continue to suit the quicks. “On this wicket you are never really in. Maybe a lead of 150-200, we’ll take that,” he said. “But it’s still moving around a bit so any lead we can get, we will take as bowlers.”

Romano: Leeds make contact to sign “outstanding” £21m attacker in January

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Leeds United have received a response after making contact to sign an “outstanding” attacker in the past few days.

Leeds showing fight in battle for survival

Heading into a tricky three-game run against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, Daniel Farke would’ve been fearing the worst, given the widespread speculation about his future, but his side have managed to amass a very respectable four points.

Even in the 3-2 loss at the Etihad Stadium, the Whites showed heart, fighting back from 2-0 down, which will be very encouraging for Farke, and the 2024-25 Championship title-winners remain outside the relegation zone for the time being.

That said, it is still very close near the bottom of the Premier League table, with both Nottingham Forest and West Ham United starting to pick up better results since hiring new managers.

Consequently, it is little wonder Leeds have started looking at new signings ahead of the January transfer window, recently making an approach for Tromso star Jens Hjerto-Dahl, and they have now set their sights on £21m summer Como signing Martin Baturina.

That is according to Romano (via Leeds United News), who said: “Baturina is a player Como still wants to focus on, they’re not thinking about a January exit. I’ll tell you the behind-the-scenes story. In the last few days, Leeds has been in touch, the teams are starting to move.

“Leeds has proposed opening talks with Como and the player’s agents about a possible transfer, even a permanent one. Leeds would have practically repaid Baturina to Como,”

“The response I understand from both Como and the player was ‘No, thanks’. Baturina wants to stay at Como, he believes in the project Como is happy with Baturina, with how he trains, the potential he has.

“Baturina continues to work hard, but the door has been closed for Leeds. In short, it also marks some clarity regarding the rumours that have been circulating about the future of the Croatian midfielder.”

Leeds scouts now spotted watching "fantastic" European standout alongside Man Utd

He’s one to watch.

ByTom Cunningham 7 days ago

"Outstanding" Baturina could have bright future ahead

Leeds will be frustrated they didn’t receive the ideal response after making a move for the 22-year-old, given just how impressive he was at Dinamo Zagreb, registering 22 goals and 39 assists in 165 outings, while he has also now scored his first goal for Croatia.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also waxed lyrical about the attacking midfielder, saying a little over a year ago: “His vision and weight of pass is outstanding.”

However, the former Dinamo Zagreb man hasn’t exactly hit the ground running since moving to Italy, being benched for the majority of Como’s Serie A matches this season, having recorded just one goal contribution in his first seven outings.

As such, Baturina clearly isn’t the finished article just yet, so it is not majorly disappointing that Leeds appear to have missed out.
