Parkinson has warned his squad that every player will be required in the coming weeks as Wrexham prepare for a congested fixture list. They face Leyton Orient in the league this weekend before taking on Stevenage on Tuesday. Wrexham then play Northampton Town the following Saturday, before a clash with Wolves' Under-21s that Tuesday. Four days later, they face Lincoln City.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham have enjoyed a strong start to life in League One, winning five and drawing one of their first seven games. They currently sit top of the table, level on points with second-placed Birmingham, although they have a game in hand.

  • WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson told reporters: "It's the start of a busy period for us. All the squad is going to be utilised over the next month or so when the games are going to come thick and fast. We've had periods like this before but I'm pleased with the way the squad is shaping up."

On this weekend's game, he added: "Orient started the season with results not going their way, but they came on the wrong side of a lot of tight games.

"You always get a good atmosphere at Brisbane Road, it's a historic stadium. I love going there, particularly when I was manager of Charlton, which was a local derby. There's always a real east-end welcome, but we're looking forward to getting down there and hopefully keep our run going."

Wrexham's clash with Leyton Orient kicks off their busy period. They will be desperate to get another three points on the board.

Perfect for Wirtz: Liverpool could hire the “best young manager in Europe”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s future at Anfield has come into question after his team dropped points in their 3-3 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Dutchman, who won the title in his first season, has lost ten of his 23 matches in all competitions, including six in the top-flight, this term.

On top of that, Mohamed Salah has claimed that his relationship with the manager has broken down after being on the bench for the third straight game against Leeds.

The Salah situation and the poor results this season have put pressure on the former Feyenoord tactician, with the club reportedly looking at potential replacements.

Liverpool have admiration for national team manager

Dave OCKOP reports that Steven Gerrard has been sounded out as a potential interim to come in and steady the ship if FSG decide to part ways with Slot in the coming days or weeks.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The report claims that Liverpool are also admirers of Germany national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann, previously of Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim.

It adds that the 38-year-old manager is expected to lead his country to the World Cup in America, Canada, and Mexico next summer, though, which means that he will not be available immediately.

Bayern's Julian Nagelsmann

Dave OCKOP suggests that the German tactician may be available after the World Cup, though, which is where Gerrard stepping in as an interim option could make sense.

If Liverpool were to eventually bring Nagelsmann in as their long-term replacement for Slot, he would be the perfect appointment to get the best out of Florian Wirtz.

Why Nagelsmann would be perfect for Wirtz

To say that Wirtz has not lived up to expectations in a Liverpool shirt so far would probably be an understatement, as he has yet to deliver a single goal or assist in the Premier League, per Sofascore.

The Reds splashed out £116m to sign the attacking midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window, and he has racked up no goals and three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions.

Slot has simply been unable to get the best out of the huge-money signing, who produced 16 goals and 14 assists for Leverkusen last term (Sofascore), but Nagelsmann could come in to get him flying at Anfield.

Wirtz’s form for Germany at international level is proof that he could shine for the Reds if Nagelsmann replaces Slot in the dugout, because he has proven that he can perform in that system.

As you can see in the table above, the Liverpool attacking midfielder has been the most impactful attacker of the manager’s reign with the national team, providing more goals and assists combined than any other player.

For further context, Wirtz scored no goals and provided three assists in his first ten caps for Germany before Nagelsmann took the job, which shows that the ex-Bayern boss can get the best out of him.

The 38-year-old boss was once described as the “best young coach in Europe” by reporter Josh Bunting in 2022, and it is still hard to argue with that assessment in the present day.

Mikel Arteta, 43, and Xabi Alonso, 44, are two of the brightest young coaches in the game, managing Arsenal and Real Madrid, yet they have won as many league titles combined (one) as Nagelsmann has, having won the Bundesliga with Bayern, and he is five and six years younger than them.

The German boss won 2.31 points per game during his time with Bayern, per Transfermarkt, whilst Slot has won 2.00 points per game across 79 matches with Liverpool to date.

This suggests that Nagelsmann could come in as an upgrade on the Dutchman as an all-round manager, whilst also being the perfect appointment to get the best out of Wirtz at Anfield.

Therefore, it could be a good move for FSG to bring Gerrard in as an interim appointment with a view to landing Nagelsmann next summer, if they decide that parting ways with Slot is the route that they want to go down in the coming weeks.

Lanka Premier League postponed to November-December due to packed cricket calendar

The tournament was originally scheduled to run from July 30 to August 22

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Jul-2021The Lanka Premier League has been postponed until at least late November, thanks largely to competing cricket tournaments or series being scheduled for the original window. The second edition of the LPL was supposed to run from July 30 to August 22.According to tournament director Ravin Wickramaratne, the announcement of the Kashmir Premier League (set to run from August 6 to 17), the CPL (which requires players to be free from August 12), the ECB’s The Hundred (which runs from July 21 to August 21), and another possible international series involving Bangladesh, have forced the LPL tournament organisers to rethink their timing. The first edition of the LPL featured a significant number of Pakistan players, but occasionally, teams were unable to field four foreign players. The unavailability of Pakistan and West Indies players in particular, would seriously hamper the Sri Lankan league. The LPL is also fighting fires on the franchise front. They have officially terminated two of the five franchises that took part last year, Dambulla Viiking and Colombo Kings both being cut from the second edition.A third franchise, Jaffna Stallions, are also on thin ice according to tournament organisers. They claim that Stallions’ owners have not been forthcoming with the Know Your Client (KYC) details that franchises are required to provide in order to be vetted by the ICC, while the franchise has also not been prompt with payments to the tournament organisers. Stallions, meanwhile, contend that they have been unwilling to make payments to the league with so much uncertainty surrounding the second edition’s timing. Stallions had won last year’s tournament.A postponement to November would mean that the tournament will be played soon after the T20 World Cup. It also means the island’s north-east monsoon is likely to be in operation. Last year’s edition was also played in November, but was only occasionally hampered by the weather.

Everton interested in move for "ridiculously good" £90,000-p/w defender

da esport bet: With last season's financial sanctions hopefully behind them, Everton are now looking towards this summer as they look to sign a player perfect for Sean Dyche's system.

Fresh faces expected at Goodison this summer

da premier bet: The latest transfer rumours out of Merseyside have linked the Toffees with a slew of smart acquisitions. The most recent name linked with a move to Goodison is Wilfred Ndidi, who is set to become a free agent when his contract at Leicester City expires at the end of this month.

Attacking players are also high on the Toffees' wishlist with the club eager to make moves for young forward players Wilfried Gnonto and Armando Broja. The former has been linked with Everton since last summer whilst the latter appears nailed on to be leaving Chelsea during this window.

The higher ups at Goodison Park also have a defensive player on their minds with Hull City's Jacob Greaves long seen as the likely successor to Jarrad Branthwaite. The young defender appears destined to be playing his football in the Premier League next season, however Everton will face competition from Ipswich for his signature.

With Dyche and co looking to strengthen in all areas of the pitch, the Toffees are now interested in a move for a highly rated defensive player.

Toffees keen on Man United man this summer

As first reported by HITC, Everton are interested in a move for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The outlet reports that the current Man United man's future at Old Trafford is uncertain with Erik Ten Hag reportedly eyeing a move for a new right back this summer.

The 26-year-old joined United in a £50 million move from Crystal Palace back in 2019, and currently commands a weekly wage of £90,000 per capology, however has gone on to struggle to maintain a consistent place in the Red Devils' starting eleven.

Despite his problems at United, Wan-Bissaka has maintained his accolade as one of the league's best one on one defenders. Whilst some modern fullbacks look to spend more time attacking than defending, the Englishman is an out-and-out defensive presence.

Following Wan-Bissaka's exceptional defensive display against Brighton in the 2023 FA Cup semi-final, then Leicester City star James Maddison said of the defender (via the Guardian): "AWB is ridiculously good at 1 v 1 defending.

“Probably the best in the world bar none. So many wingers run out of ideas when playing directly against him.”

Whilst it is one thing for an individual's performance to earn plaudits from their teammates or manager, it is a whole other kind of accolade when other team's players take notice and sing your praises.

This quote from Maddison shows just how well regarded Wan-Bisakka is when it comes to the art of defending. With Dyche well known for his defensive style, adding the 26-year-old to the Toffees' backline would be an excellent acquisition.

Better than Calvert-Lewin: 9/10 hero had his best game for Leeds vs Chelsea

Leeds United pulled off an impressive victory to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Wednesday night. Daniel Farke’s side beat Chelsea 3-1 at Elland Road to pick up a huge three points.

It was the perfect start for the Whites in front of a packed-out home crowd. After an intense first five minutes or so where they dominated, Leeds broke the deadlock.

It came from a corner, with defender Jaka Bijol making a brilliant run to the front post and emphatically heading home.

Chelsea didn’t really threaten much and eventually paid the price. Leeds doubled their lead right on the stroke of half-time, through a brilliant strike by Ao Tanaka.

The Whites won the ball back on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area, with Jayden Bogle finding Tanaka in space. The Japanese international fired home a strike from range to put them 2-0 up.

Chelsea did pull one back with just 50 minutes on the clock, thanks to substitute Pedro Neto at the back post. Yet, Leeds managed to keep them at bay, and with 18 minutes to go, capitalised on a defensive error to secure all three points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored their third, a goal which capped off a brilliant performance.

Calvert-Lewin’s stats vs. Chelsea

Calvert-Lewin’s goalscoring form has begun to improve in recent games. He bagged against Manchester City last weekend, and again against Chelsea on Wednesday night, although that strike was certainly easier.

It was a mistake from Blues defender Tosin Adarabioyo which led to the goal, with the centre-back playing a sloppy pass to Robert Sanchez.

The Spaniard was immediately under pressure, with the ball crocheting off his body and into the path of Calvert-Lewin, who tapped home from two yards out.

However, it was not just his goal which impressed about the former Everton striker’s performance.

He was a nuisance throughout for the Chelsea defence, with Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post awarding him a 9/10 rating, explaining that he ‘brought others into play’ superbly.

Indeed, the statistics back up what was a superb showing from Calvert-Lewin. He only had 37 touches but made an impact with most of those, winning an impressive 11 duels, managing three shots and, of course, bagging Leeds’ third goal.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, the Whites’ number nine was not the only one of their players to stand out against Chelsea.

Leeds’ other standout player vs. Chelsea

It was a huge win for Leeds on Wednesday night, which took a huge effort across the board. One of the best players was midfielder Anton Stach, who ran the game in midfield and was impressive defensively, too.

The numbers from the game reflect a controlled midfield performance from Leeds’ summer signing. He had 50 touches and completed 19 out of 24 passes, creating a superb four chances, one of which teed up Tanaka for his goal.

Off the ball, Stach made four recoveries and won three duels.

The 27-year-old German was a “revelation” in the centre of the park, according to journalist Adonis Storr. That is something Smyth seemed to agree with, also giving him a 9/10 rating post-match, calling that showing his ‘best Leeds performance’.

Indeed, it is easy to see why Smyth is of that opinion. For the German to put in a showing like that against a side competing in the Champions League and that are pushing Arsenal at the top of the Premier League is a colossal effort.

He was everywhere against one of the strongest sides in the top flight, and the chances he created added that creative spark in the final third. He played a huge role in Leeds’ attacking play, which ultimately helped get them over the line.

Stach proved why he could be considered an undroppable member of this Leeds side. This was a much-needed win, and he was right at the heart of it.

Calvert-Lewin’s goals recently have been key, but Stach’s performance in midfield is exactly what is needed for them to beat the drop.

Babar laments 'painful performance', Malik lambasts 'unacquainted decision makers'

Babar Azam offers no excuses after his side loses to Zimbabwe, while Shoaib Malik asks for an international white-ball coach

Umar Farooq23-Apr-2021Pakistan’s struggles with middle order were laid bare in Harare on Friday as the team slumped to a 19-run defeat, with Zimbabwe bowling them out for 99. Wobbles in the middle order had been a worry for much of Pakistan’s tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe, but the side had, by and large, escaped paying for it until now. Pakistan captain Babar Azam was sufficiently alarmed by Pakistan’s showing with the bat to warn solutions had to be found swiftly, with time running out before this year’s T20 World Cup.”It’s a very painful performance,” Azam said. “In South Africa, we had chased down 200; similarly here, we should have won this game comfortably. But unfortunately, we played poor cricket and continued to struggle in the middle order. Today, it was not just the middle order but our batsmen right through couldn’t perform the way we expect them to. It was a collective collapse and we lost as a group. But credit to Zimbabwe who came back so strongly today.”Zimbabwe beat Pakistan for the first time in T20I cricket in their 16th attempt, registering their first T20I win at home since 2016. The three-match series is currently level at 1-1, with the final game being played on Sunday.Pakistan have tried Danish Aziz, Asif Ali, and Haider Ali in the middle order since the South Africa tour, but none of them has had the desired impact. With the top order doing much of the scoring of late, opportunities to put the middle order to the test had been few and far between, though it was notable they had struggled whenever put under pressure.Azam refused to make excuses for the defeat. “The wicket was similar to the other day but it was suitable [for batters] and that is not an excuse anyway. As a professional, you adapt to every condition but I think we as openers didn’t give a good start from the top and then our middle order was struggling to step up. The World T20 is closing in and we have to sort this out as soon as possible. The next game we will come back and make a good combination.”With the middle order under scrutiny, Shoaib Malik is one of the prospects for the slot but has not played for Pakistan since the England tour last year. His name has often been floated in the media as a possible answer to Pakistan’s woes, but the selectors have so far opted against picking him. That Malik would like to make a return is well known, with the veteran playing in T20 leagues across the world during this time. After Pakistan’s defeat, the normally reserved 39-year-old took to Twitter to express his opinion.”Unacquainted decision makers need to take a step back; Babar and chief selector need to call the shots,” Malik tweeted. “In my opinion, we need an international white ball coach who understands cricket inside out & grooms our captain whilst giving clarity to our players for coming time. When your management relies on likes & dislikes especially when your cricket is just in surviving mode, then what else do expect as a nation? On top of that, when you don’t let your captain take decisions this is bound to happen.”There has been no official reaction from the PCB to Malik’s tweets yet, but as the fallout from Pakistan’s defeat grows, there are signs a man who made his debut in 1999 may yet be relevant to them in 2021.

Aston Villa must sell £25m star who earns more than Weston McKennie

Aston Villa can surely call their 2023/24 season a success. After Unai Emery became the manager in October 2022, he has overseen a huge transformation of a side that was destined for relegation under Steven Gerrard, to a team that has qualified for the Champions League ahead of next season.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Their fourth-place finish in the Premier League this season was Villa’s joint second-highest ever since the top flight was rebranded from the First Division to the competition we all know today in 1992.

They only bettered that in the inaugural season, 1992/93, with their fourth-place finish in 1995/96 the equal second-best.

This was largely thanks to the superb performances of Ollie Watkins, who scored 19 goals and registered 13 assists in 37 Premier League games, a tally which saw him win the playmaker award. As per Sofascore, his 32 combined goal involvements were only bettered by Cole Palmer, who scored and assisted 33 times for Chelsea last season.

With Villa set for an exciting campaign in 2024/25, it will be a big summer transfer window. There are already links of several incomings for the Villans, but also some outgoings, with one man potentially on his way out of Villa Park to join a giant of Italian football.

Aston Villa regular could depart

The player in question here is Villa’s Poland international right-back, Matty Cash. The former Nottingham Forest man was an important player under Unai Emery last term, but an exit from the Villans could be on the cards over the summer transfer window.

Indeed, that is according to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, the esteemed Italian journalist. He reports contact between Italian giants AC Milan and Aston Villa for a potential transfer of Cash “have continued”, as the two clubs look to strike an agreement.

As per the report from Di Marzio, Villa are hoping to sell the Poland international for a fee of around £25m, which would represent almost £10m of profit for the right-back. They paid East Midlands club Forest £16m to acquire his services back in the summer window of 2020.

He could be the second player Villa sell to Italy this week, with Douglas Luiz set to join Juventus. That deal will also see midfielder Weston McKennie and former Chelsea academy player Samuel Iling-Junior go the other way, with Juve also paying £16.8m.

What Aston Villa’s starting XI could look like after £105m spending spree

Aston Villa will be looking to build on their momentous 23/24 campaign, having qualified for the Champions League.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 6, 2024 Why this is an important deal for Villa

On the face of things, this might seem like a strange move for Villa to do given Cash’s importance under Emery last season. The Polish full-back played 29 times in the Premier League, generally only missing games through injury and suspension.

However, it is a necessary deal to do, given they need to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. As an article by Sky Sports explains, this means that when clubs add up their accounts “they can have made a loss no greater than £105m across the previous three seasons”.

Over the past season, this was breached by both Everton and Cash’s former club Forest, who both suffered points deductions as punishment. Thus, it is vital that clubs stay on the right side of the threshold.

In selling Cash, Villa will not only receive money in the immediate future that can help balance their books, but also save money on Cash’s wages.

As per Capology, he earns £80k per week at the moment, which is even more than the aforementioned McKennie, a likely incoming for Villa. The American currently earns £53k-per-week as per Capololgy, meaning that a similar total will also save Villa money in the long term and help them stay in the green for PSR.

Whilst losing Cash is frustrating, it was always necessary for the Villans to sell this summer. By moving the full-back on, as well as Luiz and Jhon Duran, who is Chelsea-bound, it helps them balance their books correctly to avoid facing the same punishment as the Toffees and Forest did last season, which could have easily cost them both relegation from the Premier League.

Aston Villa could sign dream Gallagher partner for just £15m
