As bad as Romero: Spurs must drop 5/10 ace who was anonymous in the NLD

There is no getting away from it: Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the Premier League season has been nothing short of a disaster.

In four games, Ange Postecoglou’s side have picked up just four points thanks to a draw away to newly promoted Leicester City and a win at home to bottom-of-the-table Everton.

Worse yet, the Australian oversaw his second home defeat in a row to fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday, despite the Gunners missing two of their best players in Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

There were several poor performers on the day for the Lilywhites, and while Cristian Romero has received plenty of warranted flak for his part in the Gunners’ goal, ushered away from proceedings by Gabriel and leaving the Brazilian unmarked, there’s another key starter who looked anonymous for 95 minutes.

Son Heung-min's game vs Arsenal

Yes, while Son Heung-min wasn’t directly at fault for the only goal in the game like the Argentine defender was, he was partly to blame for his side’s blunt attacking display.

Now, the club captain didn’t make any glaring errors in the game, but he didn’t produce any moments of magic or even many genuine chances for his teammates either, which resulted in a rather tepid performance in what should be one of the most exciting games of the season.

This is a sentiment shared by football.london’s Alasdair Gold, who gave the South Korean superstar – and Romero for that matter – a 5/10 on the day, writing that while he ‘teed up Kulusevski for an early chance’ he ultimately ‘struggled to make an impact.’

While potentially harsh, Gold’s assessment of the 32-year-old’s game is corroborated by his statistics, as in his 95 minutes on the pitch, he amassed an expected assists figure of 0.13 and an expected goals figure of 0.02, failed in 50% of his dribbles, played a single key pass, lost the ball ten times and was offside once.

So, while he wasn’t at fault for the goals, he offered practically nothing going forward, so for that reason, and because his minutes should be managed more this season, he should be dropped to the bench for Wednesday’s League Cup game against Coventry City.

Why Wilson Odobert should replace Son

So, Spurs have several wingers at their disposal who could come in for Son off the left, but Ange should look to give Wilson Odobert his third start of the season on Wednesday night.

Now, like most of his teammates, the young Frenchman has been somewhat underwhelming in attack this season and has failed to score or assist a goal, but he should be given time to adjust to the system, and even though he couldn’t make it count on Sunday, he injected some much-needed energy into his side.

Moreover, thanks to his time with Burnley last year, we know what he can do when given a run of games.

For example, despite still being just 18 years old at the start of the 23/24 campaign, the Meaux-born gem was able to score four goals and provide three assists in 33 appearances, which is undeniably impressive considering the Clarets’ form and suggests that in a top side, he might be capable of so much more.

Lastly, if the North Londoners are serious about going far in every competition this year, they will need to manage their first team stars and make use of their squad. So, even though Coventry are a talented team, the former Burnley ace and his fellow prospects like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall should have it in them to get a result against a Championship side.

Ultimately, Romero and his fellow defenders might have been at fault for the goal on Sunday, but Son offered very little going forward, so he should be dropped to allow Odobert the chance to open his Spurs account on Wednesday.

Amid fierce competition for places at Anfield, England U21 international Elliott – who has sat out 14 games with a broken foot this season – is yet to start a Premier League fixture in the 2024-25 campaign. He admits to being left “a little bit” frustrated by limited game time.

Elliott is, however, determined to prove his worth to Slot and the Liverpool coaching team, with an eye-catching cameo made off the bench in the Reds’ dramatic 2-0 victory over Bournemouth. The talented playmaker will not be causing a fuss when it comes to his bid for more regular involvement.

WHAT HARVEY ELLIOTT SAID

Elliott told reporters when asked if his role in the present and future has been discussed behind the scenes: “We've had those conversation but it's not just me. There are other lads in the team who maybe haven't played as much as they want and are probably doing the same thing. I just have to keep working hard, keep trying to help the team out whenever I'm needed and just wait for my opportunity. I don't expect to come in and play straight away. I want to help my team out as much as I can and the club and give everything I can.”

Elliott added on where he needs to improve in order to compete for a starting berth: “If you look at the team now, the sprints we're doing and constant running around is something I can do but I can improve it a little more. We have players in the team who are unbelievable at it. Dom [Szoboszlai], Curtis [Jones], people like that, are constantly pressing and running around. It's something I can do but I need to get into the rhythm of doing it and making it effective, not just doing it for the sake of it. I need to improve on it and I'll work as hard as I can on it.”

With Elliott prepared to be patient, as he remains under contract until 2027, he went on to say of shutting down any transfer talk that he may be generating: “This is my club, my team. I want to fight for my place and my position in the team. I'll do what it takes, as much as I can to help the team out when possible. It's down to me to make that achievable. I won't give up, I'll keep fighting and who knows what happens.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rogers was 17 when he joined City from West Brom in 2019 but did not make it to the senior team as he was loaned out before joining Middlesbrough in 2023, and then ending up at Villa at the start of this year. After his impressive display on Saturday, Guardiola defended the club's decision to let him leave as he admitted there was no place for him in a team that went on to win the Champions League.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

“It was a team that won the treble. Sometimes it’s the right time to give the [player] a chance," he told reporters. "Of course, everyone knows how good is Morgan. In that age, at the moment, we have the players we have that allowed us to create the most successful eight years in football history. In our club, comparing in this 35 or 40 days it’s not good. Sometimes when they arrive they are three years younger, in that moment there are players in their prime, David Silvas, Bernardos and Riyads [Mahrez] and Raheems [Sterling]. Sometimes it’s difficult and that’s the only reason why. That situation right now, of course these types of players would be with us but it’s always about the right moment. I’m happy for him as he’s a lovely guy, he exploded last season and this season. He’s an exceptional player."

'I missed bowling in Chennai' – Watson

As India’s batsmen piled on runs in Chennai, Watson was itching to take the ball confirming in his mind that giving up bowling wouldn’t be a permanent move

Brydon Coverdale28-Feb-2013If Shane Watson’s commitment to playing as a batsman only on this tour was ever going to be tested, standing in the field for 154.3 overs during India’s the first innings in Chennai was the time. As the runs piled up for India and Australia’s attack struggled for impact they missed Watson’s bowling, and Watson missed being part of it. But he said while the possibility of bowling later on the tour had crossed his mind, he knew that for the sake of his fitness and form, he had to stick to his plan.Over the past few years in Test cricket, Watson has had a happy knack of breaking partnerships and an unhappy habit of breaking down. His most recent injury, the problem with his left calf that ruled him out of the third Test against Sri Lanka in January and the one-day series that followed, prompted him to declare that he would give up bowling for the Test tour of India to concentrate on his batting, and on stringing together as much cricket as he could.Having missed the whole of the previous Australian Test summer due to calf and hamstring injuries, and then the Brisbane and Adelaide Tests against South Africa, Watson decided his best option was to temporarily give up bowling. As India’s batsmen put on a series of frustrating partnerships in Chennai, Watson was itching to take the ball and he said the experience had confirmed in his mind that giving up bowling would not be a permanent move.”That was a time that reaffirmed to me that I do want to bowl,” Watson said. “That was a time where if I hadn’t have made the decision not to bowl for this tour that I could have had some input on the game at a crucial time in the match. That to me was the first time over the last month since I came back that I missed bowling.”The decision I made is more a longer-term decision to get some running and conditioning into my legs, so when I start bowling again, my body has more chance of handling it. I do appreciate the decision but it certainly reaffirmed to me that I’m never going to give up bowling. It excites me having some input on the game, especially when what I do could have an influence on a certain part of the game.”For the time being, Watson’s plan is to resume bowling during the second half of the IPL with the ultimate goal of being able to contribute with the ball during Australia’s Ashes tour of England in July and August. He said while the thought of bowling at some point on the Indian tour was tempting – he has taken 12 wickets at 33.41 in his past six Tests in the country – he was resigned to the fact that his existing plan was a better long-term idea.”That thought has gone through my mind a few times but I suppose we do have to stay on course,” Watson said. “There were reasons why I made that decision – to try and get my body conditioned enough to get back into my bowling.”I know I’ve needed two or three months just to be able to get some conditioning into my body, to then hopefully hold together for the next period of time once I get back bowling again. There is a big reason why I’m not bowling at the moment – in between the Test matches to get some running into my legs to continue to build that resilience, so I can hopefully just stay together.”In committing to his long-term plan to stay on the field, Watson took advice from Cricket Australia’s medical staff as well as his personal physio, Viktor Popov, and it was made after discussing the idea with the captain Michael Clarke. The bowling issue came to a head after the Hobart Test against Sri Lanka, when Watson bowled 47.4 overs, easily the most he had ever sent down in a game, and he struggled with his calf in the next Test.”I took a lot of information in at the time, especially through the summer having the same calf injury again and also the amount I bowled in Hobart, that was the most I’ve ever bowled in my career in four or five-day cricket,” Watson said. “I knew my body could handle it, it was more so backing up to handle it again. I had to get the right conditioning in my legs, things like running technique, doing all those things to give myself a better chance to hold together my body when I’m bowling.”But I also need to be more careful in the future about the overs I do bowl. One, I have the chance to do it more consistently and have less chance of injury but also there were times when it affected my batting, more so in Test cricket over the last 12 to 18 months, especially when I was opening. There were a number of reasons why I made that decision, most importantly is trying to score some runs in Test cricket as well.”To that end, Watson has been working in the nets on his footwork, with the intention of being able to come down the pitch to India’s spinners rather than simply playing back as he has on previous tours of India. He made 84 and 60 during the warm-up match against India A and showed encouraging glimpses in the first Test but was unable to build a big score, falling for 28 in the first innings and 17 in the second.

Rangers now in talks for Clement target who Mike Ashley once bid £10m for

Rangers have begun talks to sign a defender that Mike Ashley once tried to sign for Newcastle United, according to a new report.

Pressure is very much on Philippe Clement and Rangers this season, as there is an expectation that the club puts up a stronger fight this time around when it comes to competing with arch rivals Celtic. The Gers fell away late last season, and to avoid a repeat of that, Clement and the Rangers board have been busy in the transfer market, making sure they have a squad good enough to compete on all fronts.

Rangers transfer news

As the 11 p.m. deadline on Friday approaches, Rangers can safely say they have been busy, as they have so far added eight players to their squad. But given how well Celtic have started the new season, Rangers may still be in the market for one or two additions to give them the best chance of success.

It has been reported in recent days that Rangers could be looking into a deal to sign Pyramids FC winger Ibrahim Adel, who has just impressed with his national team Egypt in the Olympic Games. The Scottish side are said to be very keen on the player, and they would be willing to spend as much as £5 million to sign the winger, but they do face competition from the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

As well as looking at Adel, Rangers were also said to be interested in a possible deal for Troyes defender Jackson Porozo, who spent last season on loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa. The report states that the Gers made contact with the French side over a possible deal, but it wasn’t a situation that was ongoing, with the demands “not suitable” for Rangers, and the defender instead joined Leganes.

Therefore, Rangers are still in the market for a new defender, and it appears as though their search has taken them to a player who was once wanted by former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who of course held a rather unpopular 8.92% stake at Ibrox too between the years of 2014 and 2017.

Rangers in talks to sign Philippe Clement target

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Rangers are in talks to sign Hoffenheim defender Stanley N'Soki. The report states that the defender could well leave the German side in this transfer window, with a loan move being looked at.

N’Soki is contracted to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2027, and Clement, who managed the defender at Brugge, would personally like to bring the central defender to Ibrox in what remains of this transfer window.

The report states that talks have begun and have been ongoing in recent hours, as Rangers look to strengthen their defensive line. Rangers fans might not be aware of N’Soki, but he has appeared on the radar of Newcastle United before, as in 2018 Ashley made a bid worth £10 million to sign N’Soki for the Magpies, but in the end the deal failed to materialise. However, a few years on, and he could now be heading for that move to the UK.

Maresca could be about to start Chelsea’s amazing 18 y/o Cobham star

Chelsea are… good. It’s happened, confusing plot points have converged under Enzo Maresca’s wing to look like a force in the making.

Chelsea alighted in east London on Saturday and made mincemeat of struggling West Ham United, with Nicolas Jackson scoring twice inside 20 minutes and Cole Palmer sealing the victory with a swept finish after good work from his striker, who now has four goals and two assists across five Premier League matches.

Nicolas Jackson scores for Chelsea

It’s been a fine start to the season that has put to bed any grumbles around the decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Pochettino steadied the ship somewhat but Stamford Bridge now has its project manager ready to lead Chelsea to glory once again. The transfer strategy under Todd Boehly and Co has seen a remarkable influx of talent but Maresca is wrapping such players up and igniting the talent at their core.

Maresca’s clearly worth his salt, capable of making shrewd tactical substitutions to cool off games or add in an injection of energy at the right time, and he expects to make sweeping changes for this evening’s fixture against Barrow in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea team news

Maresca is going to shuffle the pack with vigour. The most notable appearance expected against Barrow is that of Ben Chilwell, who is going to be in the matchday squad for the first time in 2024/25.

The left-back was among those pushed toward the exit this summer, told he had no place in the Italian head coach’s plans, but he remained at Stamford Bridge and could now earn a chance to impress.

Youngsters Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George are going to be in the matchday squad too, with summer signings Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all hoping for starting roles in the Carabao Cup.

Pedro-Neto-Chelsea

Malo Gusto is set to return to the squad after missing the past three matches in all competitions. With Reece James’ interminable injury woes dragging further through the dirt, it would be prudent not to throw Gusto back in too deep, and, with that in mind, Joshua Acheampong might be in line for a surprise start.

Why Chelsea should unleash Joshua Acheampong

Acheampong, 18, has risen through the ranks at the Cobham Academy and could now be ready to earn regular appearances for the Chelsea first team.

The Blues have fielded Axel Disasi and Wesley Fofana in makeshift right-back roles across the past few weeks to combat the injury situation, but Acheampong could now grasp the opportunity to make a real impact in his natural position, and perhaps make it his own under Maresca’s leadership.

He also has a natural attacking prowess that makes a telling comment about his multi-functionality and capacity to succeed on the major stage. Of course, defending is still his bread and butter: against Tottenham Hotspur in May, Chelsea hung on to win 2-0 and owe much to Acheampong’s performance, short but significant.

Indeed, he expertly blocked three shots and staved off any brewing threat of a last-gasp comeback. It was three days before his 18th birthday, so quite the time to make your top-flight debut and indeed impress.

Acheampong has graced the field on the senior stage just once so far, coming on for the last five minutes against Spurs in the Premier League last year. Now, he might be ready to return, allowing Maresca’s team to enjoy a natural pick on the defensive right flank.

As you can see, he’s positionally flexible, though does tend to stick to the right flank. Last season, across all competitions and at various youth levels, the teenager made 18 appearances (on top of his senior showing), building a good amount of experience that suggests he could thrive against Barrow.

Maresca was recently quizzed on whether he would include Acheampong in the starting line-up any time soon, though was coy and spoke of ‘moderating’ the emphasis heaped on talented youngsters still sat in their fledgeling phase.

Still, Chelsea don’t have a fit and natural right-back available at the moment and this could be the perfect opportunity for a teenage talent to make his mark. Barrow, with all due respect, should be comprehensively defeated later.

That said, Stephen Clemence’s side are table toppers and full of confidence. Strange things have happened in such contests.

Balance and fluency will be key. Journalist and youth scout Antonio Mango has compiled a report on the 18-year-old, praising his pace and relentless running and aggressive and combative approach to defensive play that allows him to dispossess opponents and protect his keeper’s backline.

Therefore, this would be the perfect opportunity to hand Acheampong a maiden starting berth as a professional. No disrespect to Barrow, but there’s a good chance that they could be the team of the lowest station that Chelsea compete against this year.

Acheampong is bound to feature alongside a wealth of more experienced stars, should he indeed start, and thus he could be the perfect option – perhaps if he impresses, he will even hand Maresca an exciting new option amid an injury-affected right-back area.

Chelsea wanted to sign future £152m star but ended up with Havertz & Saul

da luck: Chelsea through the years have been seen as a ruthless club, discarding both players and managers if things aren’t going their way.

da stake casino: A relentless pursuit for success has its casualties; youth players being sold, club legends being phased out, and elite managers having their time cut short. Chelsea would do whatever was necessary to chase instant success in the past, even if it led to some uncomfortable conversations and decisions.

This was a successful method for the Blues over the years, winning five Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, and five FA Cups, along with two Europa League trophies, and three League Cups.

That said, they’ve not always got it right in the transfer market. Current Arsenal star Kai Havertz is a fine example of that.

Kai Havertz at Chelsea

Chelsea signed Havertz in the summer transfer window during 2020 under then-manager Frank Lampard at the time. Havertz cost Chelsea around £71m and in the process became their second most expensive signing ever behind Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Havertz made 139 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, scoring 32 goals, providing 12 assists, and totaling 9,022 minutes played.

This includes scoring one of the biggest goals in Chelsea’s history, with the only goal in the 2021 Champions League final, in which the Blues were victorious, beating Manchester City 1-0.

However, as time went on, the London outfit struggled to find the goals upfront, with Havertz being used more often as a number nine than a midfielder under Thomas Tuchel, which saw the German leave for Arsenal in 2023 for a fee of around £65m, allowing Chelsea to recoup most of what they spent on the German.

Other midfielders signed in the following years, including Atletico Madrid loanee and then World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez.

Saul struggled for game time while Fernandez has at least become a regular. That said, at a similar time they could have brought one of the game’s global superstars to the Bridge.

When Chelsea tried to sign Jude Bellingham

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea worked ‘tirelessly’ to try and tempt Jude Bellingham away from Birmingham way back when most of England’s top clubs were ready to fight for the young midfielder.

Despite putting in lots of background work, Dortmund signed Bellingham for around £25m in 2020, Chelsea then moving onto Havertz and acquired him instead.

Bellingham is regarded as one of the best players in world football now, having moved from Dortmund to Real Madrid last summer, for a whopping £88.5m initial fee, with huge add-ons, which could see the deal become worth £115m. So staggering has the English talent been in Madrid that his market value has now increased to a remarkable £152m, as per Transfermarkt.

Comparing the seasons of both players for the 2020/21 campaign, it is important to note that Bellingham was only 17 years old at this point but he still put up some phenomenal numbers, and as we all know, he has now become a truly special player.

Back in 2020, Bellingham was in a more box-to-box role, compared to Havertz who was more of an attacking midfielder.

You can see their different qualities and roles, with the English superstar averaging better passing metrics, due to his deeper positioning and responsibility to progress the ball, as well as his extra defensive responsibilities, averaging more tackles, blocks and interceptions per 90 minutes.

Havertz had more G/A output, boasting a higher shot volume and a better progressive carry rate at the time but Bellingham has now morphed into a complete midfielder over the years, learning to use his body even better, increasing his carrying capabilities to the highest level.

He is a brilliant asset for duels due to his height and frame, but also adding more goals and assists, having scored 23 goals and provided 13 assists for Madrid last season. If Chelsea had gone all in for Bellingham, things could be very different now, that’s for sure.

Andy McBrine stars in thriller as Ireland clinch series

Chase, Hosein kept WI in the hunt before the visitors prevailed to take the series 2-1

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jan-2022Ireland won its first bilateral ODI series against a Test-playing nation other than Zimbabwe and Afghanistan by beating West Indies in a thriller in Kingston to clinch the series 2-1. The star of the show was allrounder Andy McBrine whose 4 for 28 first restricted West Indies to 212. Then with the bat, he made a sturdy 59 to guide Ireland’s tense chase. There were contributions from Harry Tector, who hit 52, and stand-in captain Paul Stirling, who smashed a 38-ball 44 up top to set the tone for the chase.Ireland were cruising at 152 for 2 at one stage, but then slumped to 208 for 8, with medium pacer Odean Smith triggering the collapse, with spin twins Roston Chase and Akeal Hosein also chipping in with big strikes.Smith had McBrine caught behind to start the slump. Then Chase dismissed Neil Rock, Curtis Campher and Tector in three of his next four overs as the visitors suddenly encountered turbulence.Ireland were 190 for 5 at the stage, but would slip further when Hosein dismissed Gareth Delany for 10 off 5 deliveries when the batter danced down but ended up ballooning the ball to point. Then George Dockrell nicked to Jason Holder at slip.Although as many as seven overs remained to get the required five runs, Ireland had just two wickets in hand. But the pair of Mark Adair and Craig Young safely negotiated Chase’s final over before Young hit the winning boundary off Romario Shepherd.Earlier, Shai Hope dominated a 72-run opening stand for West Indies, cracking 53 from only 39 balls in an unusual display of hitting which was far removed from the sedate starts he is known to provide. But once Young had Hope hooking to fine leg, the hosts started losing their way with the bat: 72 without loss in the 11th over soon became 119 for 7 by the time of the 28th.McBrine got three of the seven wickets to fall after Young also sent back Hope’s opening partner Justin Greaves. He first had Nicholas Pooran leg before after it first seemed like Pooran got an inside edge on to his pads before being caught by slip, and followed that up by trapping Shamarh Brooks in front of the stumps. But the key wicket came in the 20th over, when Kieron Pollard inside-edge to leg slip. The seven quick wickets had left it to Holder and Hosein to rebuild, which they did by adding 63 for the eighth wicket before Delany ran Holder out. Smith then smacked a four and two sixes in an unbeaten 20 off 10 deliveries, but McBrine and Young – who finished with 3 for 43 – wrapped the West Indies tail up to limit them to 212.McBrine showed the way in the run chase, eventually being chosen the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series, having scored 128 runs and bagged ten wickets across the three matches. The win pushed Ireland up to No. 3 on the points table of the World Cup Super League, which is the pathway for direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

England's new colours, and a Dutch drama

An irreverent look in and around World T20 in Bangladesh. If you are looking for news, you have got lost in the right place.

Daniel Brettig18-Mar-2014Australia turn to Coach Roy
First Shane Warne ran his eye across Australia’s World Twenty20 spinners in Cape Town. Now their batsmen have arrived in Bangladesh aided by the advice of an unlikely yet somehow appropriate mentor for the bash and crash likely to ensue in Mirpur – Andrew Symonds. While commentating for local television during the T20 series against South Africa, Symonds was teed up by the coach Darren Lehmann to offer some advice to the middle-order batsmen and allrounders, spending plenty of time with James Faulkner, who shares Symonds’ knack for power and timing at the pointy end of matches.Symonds had previously been glimpsed handing a first baggy green cap to Alex Doolan before the first Test, and it was welcome to see him ushered into Australia’s team room after the regrettable circumstances of his premature exit from the team in 2009. Casting his eye back on the development of the World T20, Symonds observed Australia’s mediocre record in the tournament and offered a plausible explanation.”When I was playing T20s for Australia it was a bit of a day off really, where you could go out and express yourself but there was no pressure. Everyone had a bit of fun and enjoyed it,” he said. “Now, with the IPL, the commercial side of cricket is huge, so players are obviously very keen to become good at the game. We haven’t been very good at T20 cricket, it’s time to put that to rest, and this team is good enough to do that.”A Gayle of a time
During an Australian summer in which he hung out down under despite carrying a hamstring problem serious enough to keep him from playing for the West Indies across the Tasman in New Zealand, Chris Gayle seemed at times to be a little out of place. But there was no such problem in Dhaka when he regaled the world during a press conference that said two things – the World Twenty20 is Gayle’s oyster, and two years on from West Indies’ victory in Colmobo, Gangnam Style remains his dance move of choice.A few choice cuts from his opening chatter included the following. On Chris Gayle: “Worldwide people want to see Chris Gayle do well and entertain. That’s why they pay the money.”On bowling (and batting): “Talking about my spin bowling? I’m the best spinner in the world man. And you know what, I bat right-handed these days, done with batting left-handed.”On the Bangladeshi spin bowler Shohag Gazi: “Who’s that? The same guy I whacked for a six off his first delivery in Test cricket? He’s in the history books, I made him famous.”Gayle’s in the entertainment business, of that there can be no doubt.England’s Orangemen
If Stuart Broad’s England team are to make a swift exit from the tournament as is widely expected, they will at least have done so after winning the loud shirt contest. Seldom does a global sporting event go by without one team or another being coerced by a kit manufacturer into wearing the equivalent of the Emperor’s New Clothes, and this time it is England donning what has been dubbed “solar red” by its creators.Decked out for years in various shades of blue, the ECB began to deviate by experimenting with a red limited-overs kit in recent times, opening the way for a World T20 uniform that looks about as Dutch as Dennis Bergkamp. certainly saw the parallel, referring to “Stuart Broadkamp”, while ESPNcricinfo’s former UK Editor Andrew Miller noted on Twitter that James Tredwell now bears passing resemblance to “a bargain-basement Jaap Stam”. Broad will hope for a similar capacity to keep the scoring to a minimum.Dutch dramas
Speaking of men in orange, Netherlands certainly found a novel way to gain unwanted attention on the day of their opening match when the all-rounder Tim Gruijters contended that he had been “bullied” out of the squad under the veil of injury to make room for the late inclusion of Tom Cooper, freed up by South Australia’s failure to reach the Sheffield Shield final.Though the ICC ultimately concluded that the Dutch had followed the appropriate procedure for replacing Gruijters with Cooper, the notion of a batsman being ruled out of a tournament due to a bad back will draw knowing sniggers from a few quarters. Batting has always been a pursuit known to encourage back trouble, and while someone like Michael Clarke has had a high-profile struggle with a particularly severe form of the ailment, many others have carried various levels of discomfort or inflexibility across their careers.A snap request for all batsmen at the World T20 to undergo scans on their backs might have revealed that plenty of other supposedly fit participants are actually carrying issues of similar severity to Gruijters without any danger of being ruled unfit to play.Cricket fantasies
One way of adding notably to your interest in the WT20 is to join in our Cricket Fantasy tournament, due to begin with the main draw on March 21. The time between now and then offers a chance to shuffle your team until you feel sure of its points potential. The event format and array of competing nations offers plenty of room for inventive combinations, whether you think it will be David Warner putting his stamp on the event or Shahid Afridi whirling Pakistan to a second title.
