Cost £12.8m: Leeds could now lose “immense” star for nothing

Leeds United, despite dominating the possession at a weighty 71.3% and bettering Burnley in terms of shots, still fell to their first defeat of the Championship season last time out.

Scott Parker’s Clarets managed to get the better of Daniel Farke’s wasteful Whites courtesy of a counter-attack goal by Luca Koleosho, with the one-time Wolverhampton Wanderers target’s strike the difference on the day, as the likes of Mateo Joseph and Wilfried Gnonto fluffed their own opportunities for the hosts.

The manner of the defeat will sting for Farke and Co, but it’s unlikely that wholesale changes will be needed moving forward, with players such as Junior Firpo in particular having a standout start to the campaign regardless of this narrow 1-0 loss.

Firpo's resurgence at Leeds

The former Barcelona man continues to look like a resurgent figure in the Leeds first team, having once found his footing at Elland Road to be on shaky foundations, after a dismal time of things in the Premier League, having been relegated with the side in the 2022/23 campaign.

Since dropping down to the Championship, however, the Dominican Republic international has shone brightly, with his creativity from down the left a massive plus.

Crysencio Summerville in action for Leeds United in the Championship.

Last campaign, alongside the skills of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville to name a few, Firpo would pick up an impressive seven assists from 27 regular season contests, alongside also helping himself to six clean sheets.

His willingness to burst forward and create openings has helped the Whites out during the infancy of this fresh season too, with Firpo galloping forward to assist Joel Piroe’s late strike against Hull City, which helped his side close out August with a comfortable 2-0 victory before Burnley soured the mood in West Yorkshire.

The rejuvenated Leeds number three did try and unlock the Clarets in a similar manner but was met by a resilient Burnley defence, as the 28-year-old trudged off the pitch with only one key pass next to his name come full-time.

There will be concerns about Firpo’s future around Elland Road now, with his contract up next June, and he already has clubs circling for his services.

Junior Firpo

Firpo's future at Leeds

There will be some grave concerns in the air as Firpo might well exit West Yorkshire for £0 if everything isn’t resolved shortly, with TEAMTalk revealing that one of his former employers in Real Betis is keen to win his services for zilch.

With his deal at Leeds entering into its final six months in January, he could well agree a pre-contract agreement with another side and then leave on a free transfer in the summer, which would be a nightmare situation for Farke and Co.

Although his value has fallen year on year he’s been at Leeds, with his valuation now standing at a low £1.9m compared to his original £12.8m fee, it would still be a sad state of affairs for the Whites if Firpo was to just leave for nothing.

His value could also increase over the next couple of months if he can keep up his electric displays in attack, which might – in tow – lead to his side tasting promotion.

Junior Firpo

Labelled as “immense” in the past by Leeds content creator Conor McGilligan, it would be a devastating end to his time in West Yorkshire if another club did poach him for £0 and an almighty blunder, given his impressive performances in the Championsnhip.

Before any of that happens, however, Firpo will no doubt just be keen to kick on and help his side in their aim to win promotion, as bottom of the table Cardiff City await Farke’s men next as the perfect way to bounce back, after the demoralising defeat to Burnley.

One of the worst players in Leeds' history is now struggling in Japan

This major Leeds United flop has continued to struggle even after leaving Elland Road behind.

As 2024 draws to a conclusion, Olmo and Barca team-mate Pau Victor do not have guaranteed first-team registration from January 2025. However, claims the Blaugrana reached an agreement to sell VIP boxes at the newly renovated Camp Nou to Middle Eastern investors for €100m.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Olmo only joined Barca in August for a fee worth up to €62m (£51m/$64m) from RB Leipzig, but after a judge rejected Barca's attempts to register him, they sought other avenues to get the deal done. The report adds that this cash injection will allow the registration of both players and will return the club to the 1:1 rule to be able to sign players normally. That would be a massive breakthrough for the financially-troubled Catalan outfit.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The 1:1 rule in La Liga allows teams, such as Barca, to spend all money raised from player sales or wage savings on new players. Up to this point, however, Hansi Flick's side have been operating under the 1:4 rule, which means they could only spend one euro for every four they saved or brought in. While they still have huge debts, their ability to address those will be greatly improved with the aforementioned financial deal.

    WHAT NEXT?

Barca reportedly launched a lawsuit against La Liga in a bid to register Olmo but, following this financial development, it is said they may withdraw from the case with the Court of First Instance.

Rob Key: England white-ball teams must 'keep evolving' as coaching appointment looms

Backs Eoin Morgan’s captaincy as Brendon McCullum enters frame as potential head coach

Matt Roller10-May-2022

Rob Key doesn’t want a ‘facilitator’ coach for England’s worldbeating white-ball team•Getty Images

Rob Key, the ECB’s new managing director of men’s cricket, has given the first clear outline of his vision for England’s white-ball sides by throwing his weight behind Eoin Morgan’s captaincy while underlining that he is not looking for a “facilitator” white-ball head coach during the ongoing interview process.Key has largely focused on England’s Test side since his appointment due to the proximity of the first Test of the summer against New Zealand on June 2 and the abject run of red-ball results across the last year. But speaking to his former colleague Nasser Hussain in an interview for Sky Sports, Key said that he expects the white-ball teams to “keep evolving” under their new specialist coach.Interviews for the coaching roles – which will be split along format lines – are ongoing at Lord’s after applications closed last Friday. Brendon McCullum, Morgan’s close friend, is among the most prominent names linked with the white-ball role while Paul Collingwood, Richard Dawson and Marcus Trescothick are current ECB employees who could fill the position.”Whoever comes in on that can’t just be a facilitator coach who is just going to think: ‘There you are, Eoin, all yours. I’ll throw a few balls and do all that type of stuff.’ They’ve got to have one eye on the fact that this team’s got to keep getting better,” Key said.”Like the Australians would have found when you [Hussain] were playing, everyone’s trying to catch them up. What the great teams are good at is [to] keep evolving. Whoever that coach is has to know – you’ve got the best side or one of the best sides in the world at the moment and you’re a good chance of winning the World Cup, but you’ve got to maintain that and you’ve got to keep evolving with it.Eoin Morgan has been England’s white-ball captain since 2014•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

“I don’t think anything is unstoppable. I think if you take it for granted then all of a sudden it sorts of hits you and you don’t realise where that’s come from. What [Australia] did so well is they changed the culture or the mentality of the way they played that game. They focused on that brand of cricket, that mentality, and that’s why it’s lasted longer. We’ve got to keep evolving that.”Morgan has been England’s white-ball captain since December 2014 but his role came under scrutiny last year following a lean run with the bat which saw him make a solitary international half-century across formats and finish the T20 World Cup with a strike rate of 119.29.But Key – who first worked with Morgan in 2009 when he appointed him as his England Lions vice-captain on a tour to New Zealand – stressed that Morgan’s future as captain was in his own hands and that he would “do the best thing for English cricket”.”I’ve spoken to Eoin quite a bit,” Key said. “He’ll always do what’s right for English cricket. He’s pretty clear on that himself. For me personally – and I’ve captained in T20, not at that level – if you’ve got a great captain, which Eoin Morgan is, that’s like playing with 12. As a captain, you impact every game, more so than some of the great, great players.”You get an overseas batsman to come in and play a T20 franchise [tournament] and he might come off three out of eight times. As a captain, you [make an] impact with your decision-making: every decision you make, within a ball, you will know if that’s been the right decision or not and Eoin Morgan is the best in the world at that. I’m sure at some point, as Eoin will probably tell you himself, if he feels he’s not that then I’m sure he’ll do the best thing for English cricket. He always has done.”Related

Rob Key brings sense of calm at turbulent time for English cricket

Key also confirmed that he will not stand in the way if England’s new white-ball coach wants to work at the IPL. The ECB have avoided any overlap between England’s limited-overs fixtures and the IPL’s window in recent years and have previously allowed support staff from the white-ball set-up to fill roles with franchises: analyst Nathan Leamon, for example, has spent the last two seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders.”You have to move with the times, don’t you? At the moment, there’s no international cricket on during the IPL,” Key said. “I would much rather have the best person for 10 months of the year than someone not as good for 12. I would say that it’s a pretty good field of candidates we’ve got and nearly all of them are like, ‘I wouldn’t be going for this if it was one [job].”

Leigh Kasperek left out of New Zealand's ODI World Cup squad

Seventeen-year-old Fran Jonas has been selected as part of the spin attack

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Feb-2022Offspinner Leigh Kasperek, New Zealand’s leading ODI wicket-taker since the 2017 World Cup, has been left out of the squad for this year’s tournament.Fran Jonas, the 17-year-old left-arm spinner who has played two ODIs, has been preferred in the 15-player squad which will be captained by Sophie Devine as New Zealand look to replicate the title success they had when the World Cup was last held on their shores in 2000.Since the 2017 edition, Kasperek has taken 42 wickets at 21.26 from 26 matches – which also puts her inside the top 10 globally – including a career-best 6 for 46 against Australia earlier this year.”I really felt for Leigh, she’s a very fine bowler,” head coach Bob Carter said. “It was based around the balance of our team. We didn’t have any of the three spinners that have been selected for the World Cup in the UK, and it came down to a choice – would we take an extra spinner or would we take an extra batter, and that created a lot of debate.”I really feel for her because she’s been a great member of the White Ferns, and it’s at times like that, as a selector or coach, that I wish I could have had another place.”The rest of the squad has a familiar look with Amelia Kerr and Frankie Mackay completing the spin department. The experienced Lea Tahuhu will lead the pace attack alongside Hannah Rowe, Rosemary Mair and Jess Kerr.Maddy Green, Lauren Down and Brooke Halliday take the specialist batting spots while Hayley Jensen fills the seam-bowling allrounder role.”We feel we have a balanced squad providing multiple options with bat and ball to cover the range of conditions we’re likely to face around the country,” Carter said.”There’s a strong mix of youth and experience in this squad with several players having multiple World Cups under their belt. We also have a younger group coming through, six of which are yet to experience World Cup cricket – and it’s naturally a very exciting time for those players.”Talking about Jonas’ inclusion, captain Devine feels that she is going to be a “threat to other teams.” She revealed that the teenager was picked not only for her left-arm spin but also because she can be used as a floater in the XI.”It’s an exciting thing about New Zealand Cricket,” Devine said. “There is some real depth coming through. Frans does deserve an opportunity. She was outstanding through the winter camps that we had among the White Ferns and she has really grown as a player. She is only 17.”Jonas’ ability to bat anywhere from one to eleven – that’s a really key thing. That’s one thing we want in our group – for players to follow the role and do the job, whatever it looks like, whatever it takes, they want to do it.”Devine also said that having a variety in the spin department strengthens the squad and Jonas being a left-arm orthodox would have helped cement her place. New Zealand have a leg spinner in Kerr and Mackay as an offspin option apart from Jonas.”We are aware of how other teams have been successful in having a variety of spinners,” Devine said. “We have an offspinner, leg spinner and a left-arm orthodox. It provides me with some real options and flexibility. All play a different role, and we are obviously playing all around the country. So conditions are going to vary. To mix and match, to play three or play two or one or none really strengthens the squad.”The same 15-player squad will play the five-match ODI series against India in Queenstown.Squad Sophie Devine (capt), Amy Satterthwaite, Suzie Bates, Lauren Down, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Amelia Kerr, Frankie Mackay, Rosemary Mair, Katey Martin, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu.

Derbyshire battle back after Shan Masood stumbles in pursuit of 1000 runs before end of May

Brooke Guest and Leus de Plooy fifties make high-class Notts attack work for rewards

ECB Reporters Network19-May-2022Nottinghamshire 22 for 0 trail Derbyshire 260 (du Plooy 57, Guest 51) by 238Half-centuries by Brooke Guest and Leus du Plooy helped Derbyshire total 260 all out on the opening day of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire, for whom leading wicket-taker Dane Paterson finished with 3 for 36.After being asked to bat first on a heavily green-tinged pitch, and facing a trio of international fast bowlers in Stuart Broad, James Pattinson and Paterson, Derbyshire will feel they could have done much worse, particularly after leading scorer Shan Masood – who still hopes to become the first player since Graeme Hick in 1988 to aggregate 1000 first-class runs before the end of May – suffered a rare failure.Australian former Test bowler Pattinson, his dander up after twice being hooked for six, bowled with real pace and there was plenty of aggression from Broad in the last of his three Championship appearances before an expected Test recall against New Zealand next month. On the down side for Derbyshire, they are without three senior bowlers, with Suranga Lakmal, Anuj Dal and Ryan Sidebottom all injured. Nottinghamshire began their reply with 22 without loss from three overs, all the runs off the bat being scored by Ben Slater.Pakistan Test opener Masood, whose seven previous innings included three centuries, two of them doubles, and only one score under 62, this time fell on 18, caught behind pushing at a ball from Pattinson that found a thin edge. His dismissal left him on 844 runs for the season, still with an outside chance to make history as the earliest to reach the magical 1000 in May, although he has only the second innings of this match in which to do it because the rest of the month is given over to the Vitality Blast. Were he to make 156 or higher he would better Don Bradman’s 1938 achievement of reaching the milestone by May 27.After Masood’s dismissal, Derbyshire slipped to 41 for 3 when Paterson removed Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen with consecutive balls. Godleman was caught at third slip before Madsen nibbled at one that left him late to be caught behind, yet new man du Plooy helped Guest steer a path to 89 for 3 at lunch, the latter miscuing Pattinson for six over the short boundary on the Bridgford Road side. After the interval, Guest completed a 68-ball half-century but was not able to build on it, losing his middle stump to a quick ball from Broad that deflected off his bottom hand. du Plooy followed Guest in losing his wicket soon after passing fifty, leg-before playing back to a ball from Steven Mullaney, but Derbyshire added 102 runs in the session.Alex Hughes, a late call-up after Dal turned his ankle warming up on the outfield, joined Guest in hooking Pattinson for six, off a no-ball to boot, having been dropped on 6 off Mullaney.Slater took a stunning boundary catch to deny former Derbyshire team-mate Luis Reece a half-century, before being given a rare opportunity to bowl his offspin and claiming his maiden Championship wicket with his first ball as Tom Moores stumped Alex Thomson. After the second new ball was taken, Hughes became a second victim for Broad when he was lbw to a full delivery but he and debutant Liam Hurt – the fast bowler on loan from Lancashire – had added 27 to secure a second batting point. Paterson and spinner Liam Patterson-White picked up the last two wickets.

£225k-p/w West Ham duo who played vs Fulham could leave the London Stadium

Two West Ham United players who featured in the draw against Fulham are now set to be deemed surplus to requirements and sold in the next transfer window, according to a recent report, just four games into Julen Lopetegui’s reign.

West Ham's tricky start

After being one of the Premier League’s most active sides over the summer transfer window, it has been an underwhelming start to life under Lopetegui’s management at the London Stadium.

Four games into the season, the Hammers have hardly set the Premier League alight. They currently sit 14th in the league with just a single win to their name, coming against Crystal Palace.

A tough fixture list means that they have tasted defeat at the hands of reigning champions Manchester City and European hopefuls Aston Villa, both at the London Stadium.

But perhaps more concerning was their performance against Fulham, with Lopetegui’s side seeing less of the ball than their hosts, as well as having fewer shots on target and fewer touches inside the opposition penalty area, hardly hallmarks of an upwardly mobile Premier League side as the Hammers are looking to be.

They were rescued deep into stoppage time by Danny Ings, who was found inside the Fulham penalty area by Jarrod Bowen before firing low into the corner past Bernd Leno to salvage a point for the visitors.

And changes are already being planned by Lopetegui as he looks ahead to January, with Ings among those who could depart.

West Ham pair could leave in January

That comes courtesy of a report from Football Insider, who claim that both Ings and Michail Antonio could both be allowed to leave in January as the Hammers look to continue their rebuild.

Antonio led the line for the first half against Fulham in the absence of summer signing Niklas Fullkrug, while Ings came off the bench to score.

Danny Ings for West Ham

However, the report suggests that the duo, who are set to be free agents next summer, could be shifted in the next transfer window.

This is because their exits would “free up some space within the squad” as well as helping “lower the wage bill”, with Antonio taking home £100,000 a week at the London Stadium, while Ings is on an even more lucrative £125,000 a week contract.

Signing a new striker is seen as a “top priority” at the London Stadium, with previous links to Jhon Duran over the summer before a deal broke down. Though they ultimately signed Fullkrug, they are keen to add another forward to their ranks to complement the quality in wide areas already at the club.

West Ham planning to move for "superb" £13 million attacker in January

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 14, 2024

Should they be able to find buyers for either Ings or Antonio, it could have the added benefit of adding more funds to the transfer kitty available to Lopetegui, who spent freely in the summer and is yet to see any early returns on that investment, though performances are only likely to improve as his new signings begin to gel.

Johnson upgrade: Spurs could unlock Solanke with £34m "1v1 specialist"

Tottenham Hotspur got their Premier League campaign underway in underwhelming fashion last night with a 1-1 draw away to Leicester City.

Ange Postecoglou's side were far and away the better team in the first half but struggled to put away their chances before Jamie Vardy punished them in the second 45.

There were a couple of good performers for the North Londoners, such as goalscorer Pedro Porro, but there were more disappointing displays, especially in attack.

One of those who failed to provide much was Brennan Johnson, and if the Lilywhites want to get the most out of Dominic Solanke this season, they may want to consider signing a new rightwinger. Interestingly, they have already been linked with someone who'd be the perfect solution this summer.

Johnson and Solanke vs Leicester

So, the first thing to point out is that while Johnson is a talented winger, and certainly of the level required to play in the Premier League, there are still question marks over whether he's good enough to play for a top side like Spurs, and unfortunately for him, his performance last night did little to sway those concerns.

In his 79 minutes on the pitch, he struggled to have any impact at all, and aside from a shot in the first half that was straight at the Foxes' keeper, he looked largely clueless on the ball and seemingly unable to time a run off of it.

Unsurprisingly, he failed to impress football.london's Spurs correspondent, Alasdair Gold, who gave him a 4/10 at full-time and wrote that he was 'not decisive enough in his play.'

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

In contrast, Solanke looked lively on his debut for the club, and while he'll be disappointed that he couldn't put away the chances he had, the signs were positive, and given that it was his first game in about three weeks, the rustiness is entirely understandable.

The £65m marksman looks like he could be the goalscorer that Postecoglou and the fans have been after ever since Harry Kane left last summer, but to get the most out of him, a new rightwinger might be needed, and the ideal candidate was already linked with the club earlier this summer.

How Coman could unlock Solanke

Yes, the player in question is Bayern Munich ace Kingsley Coman, who was touted for a move to Spurs earlier this month.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

The report revealed that the North Londoners are keen to sign a new wide player this summer, and the Frenchman was one of the players they were interested in.

The good news for Daniel Levy and Co is that other reports from this month claimed that Bayern would be willing to sell the talented winger for just £34m, or better yet, loan him out for the season.

However, would the former Paris Saint-Germain gem really help unlock Solanke more than Johnson? Yes, yes, he would.

The primary reason the "1v1 specialist", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, would be a better teammate for the striker than the former Forest man is that over the last two seasons, he has maintained a more impressive goal involvement-to-game ratio.

For example, in his 62 appearances across the 22/23 and 23/24 campaigns, he produced 24 goals and assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 2.58 games.

In contrast, the Welshman produced 28 goals and assists in 82 games across the same period, which breaks down to a goal involvement on average every 2.92 games.

Just imagine how much more effective the former Bournemouth ace would be playing alongside the rapid Frenchman, who'd either be able to provide him with a brilliant pass to bury in the back of the net or terrify defenders with his brilliant skills and, therefore, open up more space for the Englishman to exploit himself.

Lastly, the Bayern ace has been playing at the highest level for most of his career, so he could bring a much-needed winning mentality to Postecoglou's squad, which could help them avoid collapses like the one they suffered against Leicester.

Ultimately, while Johnson isn't a bad player, he doesn't look like the type of winger who will supercharge Solanke or help Spurs climb up the league. Therefore, Levy and Co should return for Coman before the window slams shut.
