Newcastle could sign £76m Isak replacement who’s like Mbappe

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe failed to freshen up his squad during the summer window, and it is now beginning to show.

Their defeat to Brighton over the weekend may have only been the second one they have suffered in the Premier League, but it was yet another disjointed performance by the club.

Alexander Isak, so often hailed as the saviour of the Toon, has scored just once this campaign for the Magpies.

Could he potentially be sold in order to fund a move for a current France international?

Newcastle showing interest in PSG forward

It was reported last week by Graeme Bailey that Newcastle have been offered the chance to make a move for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani ahead of the January transfer window.

The Frenchman, who was part of the squad that reached the 2022 World Cup final, has struggled since making the £76.4m move to the French side last summer but despite that, he’s still been compared to Kylian Mbappe.

FBref’s similar players’ tool denotes that the French star was the closest player statistically to Mbappe in Ligue 1 last term.

Much will depend on how much the French side will demand for the centre-forward, but with Isak misfiring, Howe could look to cash in on the Swede and bring Kolo Muani to St James’ Park as his replacement.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Randal Kolo Muani is a strong Isak replacement

Despite starting just twice in Ligue 1 this term for PSG, Kolo Muani has still managed to find the back of the net on two occasions, which is one more goal than Isak has managed for the Magpies during the current campaign.

Overall, the Frenchman has scored 11 goals in 49 appearances for the club, but this form shouldn’t deter Howe from potentially making a move, as it should be what he did prior to his PSG move which counts.

Indeed, during the 2022/23 season for Frankfurt, the striker scored 23 times in all competitions, chipping in with 17 assists also, and this could see him not only replace Isak exceptionally but link up well with star man Anthony Gordon.

The winger has created two big chances in the Premier League this term, alongside averaging 2.3 key passes and succeeding with 1.3 dribbles per match. These stats indicate Gordon has had plenty of success this term, although Isak has failed to take advantage.

Perhaps Kolo Muani would be someone who would thrive alongside the Englishman, being able to feed onto his passes in the final third and make something happen in front of goal.

Lauded by designer Marcelo Franco following France’s win over Belgium recently, who dubbed the striker the “French eagle”, it is clear all he needs is some trust placed in him to return to the sort of form which saw him shine in the Bundesliga.

The World Cup finalist would be an excellent signing for the Toon, especially if they aim to qualify for Europe this season. The fee will be high, no doubt about that, but if Isak did leave they’d have the funds available.

Liverpool told Trent Alexander-Arnold 'easier' to replace than Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk as Real Madrid wait patiently for England star's final decision on future

Former Liverpool star Bolo Zenden claimed that the club will find it easier to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold than Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk.

Trent will be easier to replace than Salah and Van DijkAcademy graduate linked with a move to MadridFormer Reds star wants all three players to stay Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

The three Liverpool stars, Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk are in the final year of their contracts at Anfield and the club are yet to initiate talks of extension with the players. The full-back is closely linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer and if the Reds do not make progress in their contract talks, he will join the Spanish giants as a free agent.

AdvertisementWHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking on Liverpool's contract deadlock, former Reds and Chelsea midfielder Bolo Zenden told : "With Trent, it's a difficult one because Trent is homegrown. Trent is from the hood, from the club. It will be difficult to see him leave if he leaves. Has he decided to leave? I'm not sure. I think if you have the opportunity to stay at Liverpool you probably will. There's been enough examples of players who stayed at Liverpool all their careers. If he does decide he wants to try a new experience, I think his position is a little bit easier to find a replacement for. I don't mean for one second that he's not good enough or that I want to see someone else, come in, it’s just a fact and in Conor Bradley, they have a youngster who is a magnificent understudy to Trent. When Trent’s been injured, Bradley did an okay job.

"Then you have Mo. We talk about his numbers once again this season. You cannot imagine replacing Salah with anybody else who could do exactly the same, there isn’t a player in world football that can do what he can do at the moment in terms of goals and assists. He’s a difficult one to replace. If he leaves on a free, it’s a nightmare situation for the club because we’re talking about a player that you can’t put a monetary value on. To sign anyone close to his level, and there’s nobody, Liverpool will have to put down big money and they still wouldn't have the assurances that he will perform. Liverpool should try everything to keep him, but he's mentioned himself several times that it's his last season, that he will leave the club."

Getty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Netherlands international added: "In an ideal world they would all stay. I'm a big fan of all three of them. I already mentioned that Van Dijk has been very important for Liverpool. Organising the backline, being the leader he is. He's a crowd favourite. We'll have to wait and see. I think sometimes it's a mind game to get a little bit of a better contract.

"Say that you're leaving and then get the crowd behind you. I mean, it's obvious that no one wants Salah to leave, but if it's an economic choice, then there’s not much you can do. Sometimes it's also about the contract duration. Maybe the club is offering a season or two, and he wants four. It's not always easy to understand what's going on behind the scenes."

Dave Houghton appointed Zimbabwe head coach

He takes over from Lalchand Rajput, who will now work with the side as technical director

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2022Former Zimbabwe batter Dave Houghton has been appointed the side’s new head coach, ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup qualifier that will be held in the country. The 64-year-old takes over from Lalchand Rajput who will now assume a new role as technical director.Rajput’s coaching contract was extended recently in March by Zimbabwe Cricket, but the board has now revamped the support staff.Houghton had also coached Zimbabwe in the late 90s, and was at the helm during their memorable run to the Super Six stage of the 1999 World Cup in England, following memorable group-stage wins over India and South Africa. Houghton has also had coaching gigs with Derbyshire, Middlesex among various other teams in English county cricket. His most recent coaching stint was with Mountaineers in domestic cricket.Houghton captained Zimbabwe in their inaugural Test against India in 1992, and scored a century on debut. It was the first of four that he made in 22 Test matches, scoring 1464 runs in total at an average of 43.05. His 266 against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo in 1994 remains Zimbabwe’s highest individual Test score.Zimbabwe’s prep for the T20 World Cup qualifier is in some disarray – they were recently swept 3-0 at home by Afghanistan – but Hamilton Masakadza, the former batter and current director of cricket at ZC, hoped Houghton’s appointment would help reverse their fortunes.”We are delighted to be bringing in Dave and we count ourselves fortunate and privileged to be able to appoint such a vastly experienced and highly respected head coach at a time we are looking to improve our on-field performances,” Masakadza said in a media statement.Houghton will be assisted by Lance Klusener who has already rejoined Zimbabwe’s support staff as batting coach.”With Lance having also bounced back as batting coach, we believe we now have a formidable technical team that can push for World Cup qualification and ensure our players put in consistently competitive performances,” Masakadza said. “I would also like to thank Lalchand who has been in charge of the team for the past four years, an incredibly challenging period for our cricket.”

The next Grealish: Aston Villa have found a new £100m star in the making

Aston Villa’s academy is arguably one of the most underrated English footballing academies. The Villans have produced some exceptional players over the course of the Premier League era, including the man who currently holds the record for the most appearances in the competition’s history, Gareth Barry.

Centre-back pair Ciaran Clark and Gary Cahill also came through the academy at Villa Park, although the Republic of Ireland international spent substantially longer at the club than the former Chelsea man. In the modern day, Jacob Ramsey is the man flying the flag.

The most notable Villa academy graduate, however, is surely England international Jack Grealish.

Grealish’s Villa career

Before his record-breaking £100m move to Manchester City in 2021, now 29-year-old attacker Grealish rose to footballing superstardom for his contributions in that famous Claret and Blue shirt.

Former Aston Villa forward Jack Grealish.

A boyhood Villa fan, the former club captain played 213 games in both the Championship and the Premier League. He made his debut in 2013/14 but became a prominent first-team player the season after. He left the club with 32 goals and 41 assists to his name.

Grealish had three particularly memorable campaigns for the club he supported from a young age. The first of those three was in 2018/19 when the attacker helped the club win promotion to the Premier League. He helped himself to six goals and six assists in 32 Championship games, as they won the playoff final a year after losing at Wembley.

Then, in the two years that followed, the former Villa number 10 helped his club survive relegation from the top flight.

In 2019/20, the attacker registered 14 goal involvements in 36 games before grabbing 16 goal involvements in just 26 games the season after.

jack-grealish-villa

His contributions to the club in those two seasons were invaluable; after surviving the drop, Villa ultimately went from strength to strength and now find themselves in the Champions League. As for Grealish, he made the move to Manchester and ended up a three-time Premier League champion and a treble-winner.

Grealish is the Villans’ biggest sale of all time, although there is someone in the first-team squad who could well match that before long.

Aston Villa’s next big sale

The player in question here is attacker Morgan Rogers. The England U21 international has been a revelation for Unai Emery’s side this season and has two goals and two assists in nine games so far.

The former Man City academy player joined the club from Middlesbrough in February for £8m up front, in a deal that could rise to £16m.

He has started every game in the Premier League and Champions League so far this term and grabbed an assist in his first European outing in matchweek three against Bologna.

Former Villan Tony Cascarino has been very complimentary of the 22-year-old. Speaking on talkSPORT in September, he explained that Rogers has similarities to a certain Bayern Munich star.

Like the German, Villa’s number 27 is a dribbling master, able to weave in and out of defenders with ease. He is a powerful carrier over long distances and can cover lots of ground quickly and efficiently.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

Indeed, the stats certainly back this theory up. As per FBref, the 22-year-old averages an impressive 3.16 progressive carries per 90 minutes, with the Bayern Munich ace averaging slightly less, with 2.79 each game.

Not only is there a similarity in the pair’s playstyle, but there might well soon be a comparison to be made with their transfer value.

As per Transfermarkt, Germany international Musiala is currently worth £108m and with Tim Sherwood explaining earlier this season that he believes Rogers is now worth a whooping £80m, the attacking midfielder looks like he could be the next mega-money star out of Villa Park.

Lampard wanted to sign £42m PL star for Everton, they got McNeil instead

Everton picked up their first win of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace, with Dwight McNeil’s emphatic double overturning Marc Guehi’s first-half header at Goodison Park.

16th in the standings, maybe it’s not all doom and gloom. Everton have found their feet, perhaps unsteadily, but they now have points on the board after losing their first four matches of the campaign.

McNeil has been monstrous for Sean Dyche, starting to look like a brilliant signing for the Toffees. Believe it or not, though, the transfer in 2022 almost didn’t take place, with Everton eyeing up Morgan Gibbs-White while he was still at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Everton's interest in Morgan Gibbs-White

Just over two years ago, with Frank Lampard at the helm, Everton wanted to sign a new attacking midfielder, having sold Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £60m.

Morgan-gibbs-white-wolves

Two weeks later, in July, Everton reportedly saw a £25m offer for Gibbs-White rejected by Wolves, who were holding out for more. The dynamic star had spent the 2021/22 season on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship, excelled, scoring 12 goals and adding ten assists across 37 fixtures.

Later that summer, Nottingham Forest smashed their transfer record in bringing Gibbs-White to the City Ground, signing him for fee rising to £42.5m, which would have taken the lion’s share of Everton’s budget.

Luckily, they went for McNeil instead.

How Gibbs-White compares to Dwight McNeil in 2024/25

At the end of July 2022, Everton announced the £20m signing of McNeil from Burnley, who had been relegated from the Premier League under Sean Dyche’s leadership.

He ebbed and flowed throughout his first two campaigns on Merseyside but McNeil invariably offers a creative outlet.

Now, though, he’s entering the ascendancy and proving that he has the quality to be a standout player in the English top flight.

It’s an interesting one. Gibbs-White is an excellent player, with a firm grip on the many facets of the midfield game. He’s more combative than McNeil, sure, but the Everton man is demonstrating a rich vein of prolific form that is helping Everton, a team that struggles for attacking fluency, instrumentally.

We’re still at the early stage of the season, but the former Claret has given his team a platform from which to build on. Of course, Gibbs-White’s prowess has led to him being quirkily dubbed the “Aldi Jude Bellingham” by analyst Raj Chohan, which was a double-edged comment but did emphasise his multi-functionality in the number ten role.

Bellingham needs no introduction; he’s a blue-chip English talent if there ever was one, generational. But it does show that Everton could have got their hands on a talent in the mould of one of the world’s best.

That said, are they really rueing the missed opportunity? They signed McNeil for less than half what Forest paid Wolves – and do you know what? They might just have got the better deal, with McNeil going from strength to rippling strength.

Michael Hogan earns Hundred wildcard pick in final season

Michael Hogan, the 41-year-old Australian-born seamer, will play in the Hundred this year after he was signed by defending men’s champions Southern Brave as a wildcard on Thursday morning.Hogan announced in December that this would be his final season as a professional cricketer before his retirement but has impressed in the Blast for Glamorgan this season, taking 20 wickets in 11 appearances while bowling in the powerplay and at the death. Brave have an all-star squad which may limit Hogan’s opportunities but their wildcard pick last year, Jake Lintott, ended the season as their leading wicket-taker as they won the inaugural tournament.James Fuller, the Hampshire allrounder, has also been signed as a partial replacement, initially for Quinton de Kock who will miss the first game of the tournament on South Africa duty. He is then expected to replace Finn Allen for the rest of the season, who is set to be named in New Zealand’s squad for their away series against West Indies.Related
