Sutherland returns to bowling then helps Australia A to series sweep

Tim Seifert held New Zealand A together with a fine century while Henry Thornton claimed another four wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Sep-2023Will Sutherland returned to bowling for the first time since the end of last season then played an important hand with the bat to help Australia A to a narrow victory in the final one-day game against New Zealand A and a 3-0 series scoreline.Sutherland, who was captaining Australia A, took 1 for 20 from six overs in his first competitive bowl since suffering a stress fracture in the Sheffield Shield final. He then made 32 as part of a seventh-wicket stand of 52 with Ollie Davies to take the home side to the brink of victory after they had lost wickets regularly in the chase.Tim Seifert dominated with the bat for New Zealand A with a superbly-controlled century which included six sixes before being eighth out. Tom Bruce, the New Zealand A captain, had avoided three consecutive first-ball ducks but edged Sutherland to slip for 2.When Carter fell to Tom Rogers they stuttered again until Jacob Duffy provided Seifert with support to haul the total over 200. Henry Thornton continued his remarkable few days with four more wickets to make it 11 in two outings after his 7 for 39 in the second game.Matt Short took charge of the early stages of the chase but he fell to the very promising Will O’Rourke who then removed Josh Phillipe and Ashton Turner to bring New Zealand A back into the game.Davies joined Matt Renshaw to settle the chase but when Renshaw drove to cover Australia A still needed 65. Davies and Sutherland got them most of the way there before Thornton’s memorable week ended with him hitting the winning runs.It completed a good bounce back from Australia A who had lost the four-day series 2-0.

A £70m star in the making: Spurs hit gold with "incredible" Ange signing

Ange Postecoglou has been in the Tottenham Hotspur hot seat for about a year and a half.

Since taking the job, he’s made the team one of the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League, but while he enjoyed an incredible run at the start of last season, it’s not been so easy since.

For example, he has overseen more losses than wins in the league this year, although now that some of his stars are returning to the team, the results are also starting to improve.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

Moreover, while not every signing has been a hit, many have been, including one player who’s been in fine form this term and has won comparisons to a star worth an enormous sum of money.

Postecoglou's most impactful Spurs signings

While not every addition made by Postecoglou has been a hit at Spurs, he has made more than his fair share of brilliant signings since the summer of 2023, and one of the very best has undoubtedly been Micky van de Ven.

The Dutch international joined the North Londoners from VfL Wolfsburg for around £43m in August 2023, and while he has had several injury problems since, he’s been a revelation when fit.

In all, he’s made 41 appearances for the club, in which he’s scored three goals, provided two assists, set the Premier League sprint record – 37.38km/h – and completed a clean sweep of the Lilywhites’ Player of the Season awards last term.

Another star addition from the same summer has been James Maddison, as while he’s certainly someone who can blow hot and cold at times, he’s managed to rack up a rather impressive haul of 14 goals and 16 assists in 63 games since his £40m move from Leicester City, and thanks to his recent uptick in form, there are now talks about his potential return to the national team squad.

Lastly, while there are other names, one of the stand-out recruits from the summer just gone has been Dominic Solanke, who, in just 29 appearances this season, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games.

With all that said, there’s another signing made under the Australian’s tenure who is having the season of his life and has since won comparisons to an incredibly valuable player.

The Spurs gem who's a £70m star in the making

While Solanke was doing brilliantly prior to his injury and climbing up the club’s top scorer list for this season, he was still behind one of Postecoglou’s other signings: Brennan Johnson.

In fact, the Welshman, who joined the club for around £47.5m from Nottingham Forest in September 2023, has only further extended his lead atop the club’s goalscoring chart recently.

His brace against Ipswich Town on the weekend takes him to 14 goals in 34 appearances, totalling 2211 minutes, across all competitions this season.

When you add his three assists to that tally, it comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every other game or every 130.05 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, such a great return so far has seen the former Forest ace win comparisons to some of the most exciting players around, including Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

The comparison primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Colombian is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spurs star.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty goals plus assists, shots, passes and crosses into the penalty area, passes blocked, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

While being likened to a winger who’s part of a team that looks set to win the Premier League is already great in and of itself, this comparison also bodes well for the 23-year-old’s future price tag.

For example, Football Transfers value the Liverpool star at up to €86.4m, which comes to about £72m, and if Johnson is so statistically similar to the Colombian, who is to say that he too won’t be worth that much should he keep up his current scoring form?

Ultimately, not everything has worked out for Postecoglou since he joined the club, but one thing the Australian has done is bring in more talented players, with the former Nottingham Forest gem chief among them.

Spurs must look at selling £40m Conte signing who's now on borrowed time

Djed Spence has enjoyed a fine revival at Spurs but it could mean the end of the road for one teammate.

Shakib wants World Cup-bound players to be rested for New Zealand ODIs

“We can’t afford injuries in that big tournament which involves practice matches and lots of travel,” says Bangladesh captain

Shakib Al Hasan wants all four of his fast bowlers to remain fit for the ODI World Cup•BCB

Shakib Al Hasan feels Bangladesh should rest their ODI World Cup-bound players during the home series against New Zealand later this month to ensure that they are “fit and healthy.” The three-match ODI series begins on September 21 and concludes on 26 in Dhaka, with both teams set to travel to India the following day. Both New Zealand and Bangladesh have two warm-up matches each on September 29 and October 2, respectively.Shakib conceded that one of the reasons to ask for this short period of rest is because of “lots of travel” that the team would have during the tournament in India. Bangladesh’s home series against New Zealand could also be an opportunity to test their bench strength. They are yet to name the squad for the World Cup.”We will try a few things in the three ODIs against New Zealand,” Shakib said. “If we can get one or two players from there who can fit into the team [later], it will be better for the team. Everyone has a chance [to play]. I personally believe that those who played in the Asia Cup could be rested from the New Zealand series, especially those who are confirmed for the World Cup.Related

BCB president: Mahmudullah still in Bangladesh's World Cup plans

Ferguson to captain New Zealand in Bangladesh ODI series

“We cannot afford injuries in that big tournament which involves practice matches and lots of travel. We don’t have a lot of bench strength. It is very important for us that players are fit and healthy for the World Cup. I want all four of our fast bowlers to remain fit, now that Ebadot [Hossain] is out.”Bangladesh’s opponents, New Zealand, have picked a second-string squad led by Lockie Ferguson with Tom Latham among a group of senior players given a break before the World Cup.Meanwhile, Shakib suggested that the question about Mahmudullah’s return was “irrelevant” now, although BCB president Nazmul Hassan had stated twice since May that he was in contention. Mahmudullah has not played an ODI since March.”I don’t know if you mentioned Riyad [Mahmudullah] when he was missing from the last three series. Now you are saying it (laughs). I think it is very irrelevant. You have again asked the wrong question. Towhid Hridoy replaced Riyad .”

Warwickshire take charge after Hannon-Dalby four-for, Yates fifty

Warwickshire 155 for 2 (Yates 53*) trail Kent 171 (Stewart 50, Hannon-Dalby 4-56) by 16 runsWarwickshire dominated the first day of their LV= Insurance County Championship with Kent at Canterbury, reaching 155 for two at stumps, a deficit of just 16. Rob Yates was unbeaten on 53, while Sam Hain was 29 not out.Earlier Oliver Hannon-Dalby took 4 for 56 as Kent were bowled out for 171, a score that would have been even lower had Grant Stewart not blasted 50 from 45 balls. The hosts’ last three wickets added 93, more than half their total.Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, originally signed for the Vitality Blast, made a rare first-class appearance and bowled five overs, taking nought for 17, having been awarded his Warwickshire cap in a short ceremony before the start.Kent chose to bat in broad sunshine at the Spitfire Ground, but approached their innings as if they were still in T20 mode. Their openers were diligent enough in seeing out the first ten overs but the loss of Ben Compton seemed to flick a switch, ushering in a spell of four wickets for 19 runs in the space of 4.5 overs. Chris Rushworth started the collapse when he found Compton’s edge and he was caught behind for 9.Joe Denly lasted just just four balls before he was lbw to Henry Brookes for 1 and Harry Finch’s first red-ball appearance of the season was even shorter as he made a three-ball duck, Rushworth finding his bottom edge and Michael Burgess taking a sharp catch standing up to the stumps.Jack Leaning had made a relatively untroubled 7, but when Tawanda Muyeye nudged the ball to mid-on he hared down the wicket and made it almost as far as the striker’s end before realising his partner hadn’t moved, allowing Will Rhodes to walk in and break the wicket.Jordan Cox nearly met the same fate and although he was spared by a misfield, he’d made just 15 before he pulled Hannon-Dalby to Alex Davies at square leg. A disastrous session for the hosts came to an end when the same bowler had Muyeye lbw for 38.If that decision was harsh, Muyeye was the only batter who could really claim he had been unlucky. Joey Evison went for 4 in the second over after lunch, victim of a tumbling catch by Burgess after he’d nicked Hannon-Dalby and it was left to Stewart to play the Stokes role. He smashed Hannon-Dalby for a six that sailed over cow corner and through the branches of the St. Lawrence lime tree and was joined by Matt Quinn for a stand of 40 that proved the highest of the innings.Quinn’s frenetic 15-ball cameo yielded a six and three fours before Brookes had him caught by the sub fielder, his brother Ethan, for 25.Arshdeep Singh hit his first ball for six, but he left the pyrotechnics to Stewart, who dumped Hannon-Dalby for successive sixes over cow corner before his luck ran out when the same bowler had him caught on the boundary. It had been an entertaining hour, but it looked a low score and lower still as Warwickshire advanced to 69 without loss. The opening stand was broken when Alex Davies was lbw for 42, perhaps unluckily, to Evison. Hamid Qadri then had Will Rhodes caught behind for 25, but Yates was on 42 when Kent missed a difficult chance to run him out and he and Hain were otherwise unflustered as they batted through the evening session.

Imad Wasim returns to Nottinghamshire as short-term injury cover for crucial Vitality Blast games

Somerset have brought in Ish Sodhi for their final two group games

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jun-2023Nottinghamshire have signed Imad Wasim on a short-term deal as cover for Colin Munro and Samit Patel, who will miss the end of the Vitality Blast group stages through injury.Imad was part of the Notts side that won the trophy in 2020 and returns for a third spell at Trent Bridge ahead of their final two group games, and potentially the knockouts beyond.Notts sit fourth in the North Group and will qualify for the quarter-finals if they win either of their remaining games, both of which are at home: against Birmingham Bears on Friday, then Leicestershire on Sunday.”We’re delighted to welcome Imad back, particularly with the memories we have with him lifting the trophy at Edgbaston three years ago,” Peter Moores, Nottinghamshire’s head coach, said. “We have two big games at Trent Bridge with qualification in our own hands and an opportunity to still gain a home draw depending how other results go.”Elsewhere, Somerset have brought in Ish Sodhi for their final two group games. They have already qualified for a home quarter-final – but players must be registered in the group stage of the competition to be eligible to play in the knockout stages.Sodhi will act as cover for Peter Siddle (hand), Roelof van der Merwe (finger), Lewis Gregory (finger) and Lewis Goldsworthy (rib) who are all sidelined through recent injuries.”Everyone is aware of the injuries that we have picked up to senior players over the last week or so,” Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, said. “It was imperative at such a key stage of the Vitality Blast campaign that we acted quickly and identified a player who could add real value to our squad.”

Arteta must unleash Arsenal’s answer to Kudus in "unplayable" game-changer

da esport bet: This season has been nothing short of a roller coaster for Arsenal fans.

da bet sport: Mikel Arteta’s side have been inconsistent on the pitch and incredibly unlucky with injuries off of it.

However, the last seven days might just have been the start of a good period for the side, with Mikel Merino stepping up in the absence of a recognised number nine on Saturday and then the former manager doing his successor a favour by taking two points off Liverpool on Wednesday.

With that said, the Gunners have a tough test against Graham Potter’s West Ham to get past this afternoon if they are to keep up the pressure on Arne Slot’s Reds, and to ensure they do, Arteta must unleash one of his new stars who’s been compared to the Hammers’ Mohammed Kudus.

Arsenal's record against West Ham

Since their first meeting back in January 1909, when they were under the name Woolwich Arsenal, the Gunners have played West Ham 152 times across all competitions, winning 74, drawing 41 and losing 37.

jorginho-paqueta-zinchenko-arsenal-west-ham

However, while their overall record against the Hammers is pretty excellent, the North Londoners’ form against the Hammers over their last four encounters has been decidedly more mixed, with two wins, two losses and a draw.

Moreover, while their last two games against the East Londoners, which have both been away, have resulted in hefty wins for Arteta’s men, their last game at the Emirates was something of a disaster.

It was in late December 2023, and despite taking 30 shots to their six, having 74% of the possession and amassing an expected goals figure of 2.77 to their 1.42, the title challengers came away 2-0 losers, and it could have been even worse had David Raya not saved Saïd Benrahma’s 96th minute penalty.

So, it should be an exciting game this afternoon, and one of the players Arsenal have to be most aware of is undoubtedly Mohammed Kudus.

Still, the good news is Arteta already has his answer to the attacker, although he has to make sure he starts him.

Arsenal's answer to Kudus

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that, thanks to the mountain of attacking injuries Arsenal have at the moment, there really aren’t many options for Arteta to choose from for the right wing, meaning it’s likely to be another start for the incredible Ethan Nwaneri, who also happens to be the team’s answer to Kudus.

Now, there are a number of reasons why this is the case, but perhaps the most significant is that he’s been likened to the Hammers star by FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Ghanaian is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Englishman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots on target, passes into the penalty area, blocks, ball recoveries and more, all per 90.

On top of their statistical similarities, both players have shown themselves to be positionally versatile, as while the young Hale Ender is currently thriving off the right, he’s also able to play in midfield, attacking midfield, and even up-top, akin to the Irons ace.

With all that said, another reason Arteta must start the “unplayable” teenager, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, is exactly that: he’s becoming the sort of player defenders do not want to play against.

For example, despite playing just 790 minutes of first-team football across 24 appearances, the Enfield-born phenom has scored seven goals and provided one assist, which comes out to an unreal average of a goal involvement every three games, or every 98.75 minutes.

Ultimately, Arsenal must win this game to keep the pressure on Liverpool, and for them to stand the best chance of doing so, the manager needs to keep Nwaneri in the starting lineup.
