Baroda, Punjab, Delhi, and Assam booked their places in the 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semi-finals on Thursday. While Baroda eliminated defending champions Mumbai, Punjab won a closely-fought contest against a Rinku Singh-inspired Uttar Pradesh. In the other two games, there were relatively straightforward wins for Delhi, who knocked out Vidarbha, and Assam, who outplayed Kerala to reach the semis for the first time in the T20 competition.
Sopariya, Solanki knock Mumbai out
Right-arm medium pacer Soyeb Sopariya ran through Mumbai’s top order to set up a memorable victory for Baroda in Mullanpur. After inserting Mumbai to bat, he trapped opener Jay Bista lbw in the first over. He also sent Ajinkya Rahane back in the third over, and then had Yashasvi Jaiswal nicking off for a 14-ball 8 right after the powerplay.Sopariya eventually finished with figures of 3 for 16, while fellow quick Lukman Meriwala took a wicket and conceded just 18 runs.Shivam Dube (48 off 36) and Sarfaraz Khan (33 off 22) tried to get Mumbai’s innings back on track, but Abhimanyusingh Rajput dismissed both set batters to help restrict Mumbai to 148.Baroda lost an early wicket in their chase, but opener Jyotsnil Singh and No. 3 Rajput steadied them till the eighth over. Then, Mumbai effected a mini-collapse as Baroda slid from 64 for 1 to 88 for 4 in 21 deliveries. But Vishnu Solanki, at No. 5, ensured Baroda got the job done, even as he lost three partners at the other end. Solanki hit two sixes and five fours in his unbeaten 49 off 30 as Baroda chased the target with seven balls to spare.File photo: Rinku Singh blasted 77 off 33 but it went in vain•Sportsfile via Getty Images
Rinku fireworks not enough for UP
Rinku Singh added another sensational rescue knock in his already glowing resume, smashing 77 not out off just 33 deliveries, but Punjab still trumped Uttar Pradesh in a thriller in Mohali to reach the semi-finals.Rinku came out to bat with UP struggling at 53 for 3 in the 12th over. He started quick, hitting a boundary off the third ball he faced. Rinku found support in Sameer Rizvi as they plundered 116 in 53 balls. Rizvi finished unbeaten on 42 off 29, hitting four sixes and a four, while Rinku notched up four fours and six sixes, three of which came off the final over bowled by Arshdeep Singh.Punjab slipped to 14 for 3 in the fourth over thanks to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohsin Khan. But Nehal Wadhera and Anmolpreet Singh rescued them with a 72-run stand.UP bounced back, courtesy Mohsin. He removed Anmolpreet for 43 off 29 and Wadhera for a 39-ball 52 in the 13th and 15th over, respectively.Punjab still needed 55 off 31 deliveries and Sanvir Singh and Ramandeep Singh brought their big-hitting prowess to the party. Sanvir made 35 not out off 13 deliveries, while Ramandeep scored 22 to take Punjab home in the final over.
Rawat, Dhull inspire Delhi into the semis
A 105-run partnership for the second wicket between Anuj Rawat and Yash Dhull set the base for Delhi’s win over Vidarbha in Mullanpur. After Umesh Yadav’s strike in the third over, Rawat and Dhull kept the scorecard ticking for Delhi. Rawat mainly played the anchor’s role, scoring a 53-ball 68, while Dhull made 43 off 29.Ayush Badoni also chipped in with a 17-ball 28 at the death to take Delhi to 176, even as Umesh registered a four-wicket haul.Vidarbha could never find their momentum with the bat, losing wickets in regular intervals and slipping to 85 for 6 in the 13th over. Vidarbha’s No. 6 Shubham Dubey tried to defy the Delhi bowlers with his 44 but it wasn’t enough. In the end, Vidarbha fell 39 runs short.Related

Assam coast past Kerala
After unprecedented seven fifties in a row in this competition, Assam captain Riyan Parag failed to fire in Mohali, but they had little trouble in defeating Kerala to reach the semi-finals for the first time. Assam had gotten better of Kerala in their league-stage encounter as well. However, unlike their league stage match, the quarter-final was one-sided with Sumit Ghadigaonkar starring with his composed 75.He controlled the chase of 159, putting on important partnerships with opener Rishav Das and No. 5 Sibsankar Roy.Earlier, Assam had Kerala on the mat early as they slipped to 44 for 5 in the seventh over. But Salman Nizar and Abdul Basith hit half-centuries each and put on a 101-run stand to take Kerala to 158.After losing opener Denish Das trapped lbw in the first over, Ghadigaonkar and Rishav stitched a 69-run stand with the former dominating the partnership. With Roy, Ghadigaonkar added 49 runs and when he departed, Assam were only 14 runs away from victory. They got there in the end with 17 balls to spare.
da pinup bet: Chelsea may have a lot of work to do in the upcoming summer transfer window to build a squad that is ready to compete for the biggest trophies on offer.
da jogodeouro: The Blues only have the Conference League left to play for in the current campaign, after being knocked out of the League Cup and the EFL Cup, but they are on course to seal a place in the Champions League with a top four or top five finish.
Enzo Maresca may look to streamline the squad and move on from some of the players who either have not contributed enough on the pitch, or who have been out on loan and not done enough to earn a place in the side for the 2025/26 campaign.
Moving some of the highest earners and biggest underperformers on from Stamford Bridge in the summer could create space at the club for new signings to come in and improve the Italian coach’s team.
Chelsea's highest wage earners
The top three earners in the squad, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, and Christopher Nkunku have only started 30 of a possible 87 matches in the Premier League this season.
Chelsea captain Reece James
James is reportedly the highest earner at the club on £250k-per-week, per Capology, followed by Fofana on £215k-per-week, and Nkunku on £195k-per-week, and there may have to be decisions to be made on how much value for money the club are getting out of them.

What you cannot see in that list of the top ten earners at the club, however, is that Chelsea are still reportedly paying £75k-per-week to Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is on loan at Bournemouth.
Why Chelsea must finally sell Kepa Arrizabalaga
Maresca must, now, finally cash in on the Spain international in the summer transfer window because the club have sent millions down the drain on the shot-stopper to date.
Chelsea reportedly smashed their club-record transfer fee to make him the most expensive goalkeeper in history with a £71m deal with Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2018, and he penned a contract worth roughly £150k-per-week.
Kepa reportedly earned £39.1m in wages across his first four seasons at Cobham, conceding 175 goals in 163 appearances for the club in that time, which takes the total spent on him to £110.1m prior to this season.
The Spaniard, whose wages were covered by Real Madrid on loan last term, will have earned £3.9m in wages from the Blues – thanks to a 50% split with Bournemouth – this season and that takes the overall spend on him to £114m.
Kepa’s performances on the pitch for Chelsea when he was a regular in the first team did not provide good value for that amount of money.
Not only was there that ridiculous incident where he refused to be substituted but he conceded 8.9 more goals than the average goalkeeper would have been expected to based on the post-shot xG of the efforts against him in the Premier League in 109 matches.
Gary Neville heaped criticism on the £71m goalkeeper back in 2020 over his constant concession of long-range goals – 19 at the time – as he described his shot-stopping performances as a “sorry story” for a player of that value.
This shows that the 30-year-old flop, who did not win a Premier League title with the Blues, underperformed on the biggest job a goalkeeper has – saving shots.
Kepa’s contract at Stamford Bridges expires in the summer of 2026 and Maresca must push the board to cash in on him this year, to avoid losing him for nothing and to, hopefully, recoup a small amount of the £114m that has been wasted on the dud so far.

Celtic returned from the last international break of the season with a bang as they secured a 3-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership.
The Hoops had to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Rangers in front of their home supporters before the break, and that is what they did with a comfortable win on Saturday.
Daizen Maeda scored two goals, slotting through in a one-on-one and tapping in from close range, to send the Bhoys on their way to the win in the first-half.
Those two strikes have taken the Japan international’s tally for the season to 30 goals and nine assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops, as he has emerged as a consistent scoring threat for the club.
The 27-year-old attacker, who scored the first and third goals on the day, was not the only forward who got his name on the scoresheet, though, as Jota also found the back of the net.
Celtic’s Portuguese sensation was the first to react to Maeda hitting the post to sweep the ball in for the team’s second, continuing his fairytale return to Parkhead.
Why Jota has been an excellent signing for Celtic
The Scottish giants reportedly paid a fee of £8m to sign the winger from Ligue 1 side Rennes in the January transfer window, 18 months on from his £25m move to Al Ittihad from Glasgow.
Because he had already played two seasons for Celtic in the past under Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers knew that the club were bringing in a proven talent at Premiership level.
As the graphic above illustrates, the Portugal international has the quality to terrorise opposition defences in the Scottish top-flight due to his ability to both score and assist goals consistently from either the left or the right flank.
Since his return to Parkhead, Jota has racked up four goals, three ‘big chances’ created, and two assists in just five starts and eight total appearances in the division.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old sensation ranks incredibly highly against his positional peers when it comes to scoring goals, making the most of his xG, and creating chances for his teammates at the top end of the pitch.
These statistics suggest that Jota has, therefore, been one of the best wingers in the league, and arguably the best goalscoring winger, since his return to the club for £8m in the winter window.
Despite his sensational form for the Scottish giants in the last couple of months, the former Benfica man still does not crack the top five most valuable players at Parkhead.
Celtic's most valuable players
According to Transfermarkt, Jota is currently valued at £7.5m, just £500k short of the actual fee that Celtic reportedly paid for him at the start of the year, and that places him seventh within the squad.
This means that the Portuguese wizard does not sit in the top five most valuable players at the club, despite his phenomenal form, as the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda are currently more valuable than him.

As you can see in the table above, Jota ranks seventh overall and USA international Cameron Carter-Vickers is sat at the top with a value of £11.7m.
The Scottish giants have built a squad that is full of highly-valued stars, hence why the Portuguese forward ranks so lowly despite his quality, as they have hit the jackpot with several fantastic signings.
One star they struck gold by signing during Postecoglou’s tenure in the dugout in Glasgow has been right-back Alistair Johnston, whose value has soared since his initial move to the club.
Alistair Johnston's soaring market value
The Canada international was reportedly signed from CF Montreal for a fee of £3m in the January transfer window at the start of 2023, shortly before Josip Juranovic moved to Union Berlin later that month.
He was tasked with replacing the Croatia international, who had scored one goal and provided one assist in ten league matches during the first half of the season, and hit the ground running with one goal, one assist, and five ‘big chances’ created in 14 appearances in the Premiership.
In the words of Rodgers, Johnston has been an “inspiration”, following that up with 11 ‘big chances’ created and five assists in 32 league outings for the Scottish giants in his first full season at the club.
In the current campaign, the 26-year-old star has created 13 ‘big chances’, scored four goals, and registered seven assists in 27 games, as he has continued to prove that he is a huge attacking threat from the right-back position for the Hoops.
The Celtic dynamo’s fantastic performances on the pitch over the last two-and-a-bit-years have led to his market value soaring by more than £5m, to the point where he is now worth even more than star winger Jota.

As you can see in the table above, Johnston’s market value has steadily increased throughout his time in Glasgow, which illustrates how he has continually impressed and progressed at Parkhead.
At the time of writing, he is valued at £8.4m – £5.4m more than the £3m that the club reportedly paid for him – and £900k more than Jota is worth, as well as £400k more than the reported fee that was paid to Rennes for him in January.
Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.
This shows that the Premiership champions hit the jackpot when they swooped to sign him from the MLS at the start of 2023, as he has become a trusted figure at the back for the Hoops whilst also growing in value to establish himself as one of the most valuable players in the squad.

Arne Slot is well on his way to securing his first Premier League title with Liverpool in his first attempt, currently sitting top of the tree on 67 points after 28 matches played, 13 points ahead of second-place Arsenal who do have one game in hand.
Liverpool are unsurprisingly the league’s top scorers, scoring 66 goals in their 28 games played, taking the most shots per game with 16.6 and averaging 56.7% possession; the fourth highest in the division.
Mohamed Salah has scored a whopping 25 Premier League goals this season, whilst also providing 17 assists and totaling 2,485 minutes played.

Behind Salah, the likes of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota have all contributed with goals, as has Dominik Szoboszlai in recent weeks, being deployed as a false 9 at times under Slot.
This has left Darwin Nunez’s future in doubt, as he clearly finds himself out of favour.
The Darwin Nunez conundrum for Liverpool
Nunez was signed by Liverpool back in 2022, joining for a club-record fee of around £85m from Benfica.
Since joining the Reds, Nunez has made 132 appearances, scoring 39 goals, providing 22 assists and totalling 7,105 minutes played.
The story of Nunez’s time at Liverpool can largely be put into perspective with his missed chance against Aston Villa.
Whilst he gets himself into very good positions, working hard for the team and constantly offering a threat on the break, his ability to provide that final clinical touch has proven to evade him at times.
This term, he has missed 13 big chances which remarkably is an improvement on last season where he missed a colossal 38 across all competitions.
Some of his misses have been described as “unacceptable” by pundits, and the longer this continues, the more you begin to wonder if Nunez will eventually be replaced, even if it’s by someone from Liverpool’s academy system.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
Liverpool's "special" star could replace Nunez
The Reds are currently bringing through a number of highly-rated young forwards at the moment with Jayden Danns perhaps the most exciting from a striker perspective.
Liverpool's Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns and Trey Nyoni celebrate winning the Carabao Cup with the trophy
However, in the shape of Ben Doak, they have a winger who could also take minutes away from Nunez heading into Slot’s second term.
Liverpool signed Doak from Celtic back in 2022, with the youngster joining for a measly £600,000 compensation fee from the Scottish giants.
The 19-year-old has found himself on loan at Middlesbrough this season, making 24 appearances, scoring three goals, providing seven assists and totalling 1,789 minutes.
Doak can play on both wings, which opens the opportunity for Slot to continue using the likes of Diaz, Szoboszlai, Jota and even Curtis Jones through the middle, looking to exploit his attacking firepower out wide with the likes of Salah and Gakpo.
The Scotland international was described as a “special” young player by Jürgen Klopp, whilst Jones described the Liverpool youngster as a “potential game-changer” when he joined Boro in the summer on loan.
Doak is clearly an extremely talented player, who is expected to make the jump to Premier League football next campaign one way or another.
Ben Doak for Liverpool
If Slot is willing to put his trust in the 19-year-old next season, Doak could offer some extra firepower to their attacking line, leaving the door open for Nunez to be sold, which may become more feasible if he remains out of favour under the Dutch manager.

Harmison: England squad for WI will have fresh faces
David Willey signed off from his international career by taking his 100th ODI wicket in England’s win over Pakistan in Kolkata – then revealed he had considered pulling out of the World Cup as late as the day that the team flew to India at the end of September.Willey announced before England’s defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad last week that he would quit international cricket after this tournament at the age of 33. He was told in September that he had not been offered a central contract for 2023-24, then learned that he was the only member of the World Cup squad without an offer. He was incensed, and soon decided that he was no longer interested in feeling like “a third wheel” as a fringe player. He said that constant uncertainty over his schedule had taken its toll on him, his wife and their two children, and has therefore opted to “take control”.Related

Willey started the World Cup running the drinks for England but replaced Sam Curran for their fourth match, a 229-run loss to South Africa in Mumbai, and has played every game since. He finished the tournament with 11 wickets at 23.54, second only to Adil Rashid in England’s squad, and signed off with 3 for 56 in his 10 overs.”It was mixed emotions,” Willey said. “My time is done… but it’s with deep regret. Anybody looking in has probably looked at the way I’ve gone about my business and [seen that I am] probably playing the best cricket of my career. I’m 33, as fit as I’ve ever been.”One of the reasons that I wasn’t offered a contract was them going in a different direction after the World Cup – I don’t know why [they are]. It’s been a period for some time now… not knowing quite where I stand with England and it’s just taken its toll, and becomes very tiring.”David Willey was Player of the Match in his international swansong•AFP/Getty ImagesWilley believes he would have been able to play a valuable role for England at the T20 World Cup next June, had he been offered a contract. “[If there is] an injury or two, they’re going to be calling on someone with very little to no experience in World Cups,” he said.”Never say never, but right now, I’m very confident [in] my decision that today was my last game of cricket for England. Do I want to go to the Caribbean and run drinks, and not know where I stand, and just feel like a third wheel again – which is very much what I felt like when I turned up at Lord’s, being the only one without a contract? Probably not, so I’m done.”Willey said he had doubts over whether he should travel to India after learning that he was the only squad member without a central contract: “I wasn’t sure whether I was going to come to the World Cup, even to the 11th hour. The morning that we were joining up at Lord’s, I still wasn’t sure whether I’d make the trip or not.”He added: “From then on, it [retirement] was something that was on my mind. It’s not just that I haven’t been offered a contract; it’s how I feel valued as an England player, when I look down that list of other guys that have got contracts… I came to the decision that the time was right for me to call it a day.”Willey removed both Pakistan openers – Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman – in his new-ball spell on Saturday, then returned to have Agha Salman caught at mid-on to become the 15th Englishman to reach 100 ODI wickets. He also became the second England men’s player after Alastair Cook to win the Player of the Match award in his final international appearance.”On the phone to my wife this morning, she said, ‘Go on – just get to 100 wickets. It’d be a nice way to finish,'” he said. “To do that was a nice way for me personally [to sign off].”He said he wanted to leave international cricket on his own terms, and hoped that he had proved Rob Key – who, as managing director, was ultimately responsible for central contract offers – wrong. “Keysy said to me, ‘I hope you can prove me wrong.’ Maybe I’ve done it over the last few games,” Willey said.”The timing [of his retirement announcement], people may have looked at it and frowned upon my timing there. But for me personally, there’s not many opportunities you get to walk away from [international] cricket on your terms, and I wanted to really enjoy my last three games of cricket [for England] and play without looking over my shoulder, thinking, ‘One bad performance and I’m out of the side.'”Willey will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket. He captains Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast and has a contract with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders for the ILT20 in January-February. He is also likely to be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and by Welsh Fire in the Hundred.
